FPL Gameweek 19 team news: Injury & Covid updates from Arsenal, Villa and Brighton

The pre-match press conferences for Gameweek 19 have started nice and early, with Christmas bringing forward many of the usual media gatherings by a day or two.

We’ve had three already from Mikel Arteta, Steven Gerrard and Graham Potter on Wednesday, while Thomas Tuchel and Brendan Rodgers will face reporters immediately after their EFL Cup quarter-final ties; the Gameweek 19 section of those conference calls will likely be embargoed until later in the week.

More Premier League head coaches will face the media ahead of Sunday’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadline, with the bulk of the rest expected on Thursday and a smattering on Christmas Eve.

With the coronavirus pandemic, of course, much can happen between a press conference and kick-off, so keep tabs on our site and the below article for the latest updates.

ARSENAL

Sead Kolasinac (ankle) will miss the trip to Norwich, while Calum Chambers, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Pablo Mari are also currently sidelined with Covid-19 – although the UK government’s recent tweak to the coronavirus protocol, which gives individuals the chance to end their quarantine after the production of two negative tests on days six and seven of their self-isolation, does leave the door potentially open for an earlier-than-expected return.

“We didn’t pick [up] any injuries [against Sunderland in the EFL Cup] yesterday. Before the game, as you know, we lost Calum [Chambers] with Covid. We will be tested every day and see how it goes. Touch wood!” – Mikel Arteta

The availability of Ainsley Maitland-Niles (non-Covid illness) and Takehiro Tomiyasu (muscle) wasn’t discussed in Mikel Arteta’s pre-match press conference, although it’s probably only the latter who is relevant from a first-team perspective anyway.

The Arsenal right-back was substituted in the win over Leeds last Saturday but Arteta said afterward that Tomiyasu was “hopefully not injured”, suggesting that the withdrawal was precautionary in nature.

The Japan international wasn’t sighted in training on Monday, however.

“It was more of a muscular injury. He’s got a big load on him because he’s played every single minute since he’s joined us and even this week he’s been struggling a little bit. We decided to take him off, he wasn’t 100 per cent confident to continue in the game, and hopefully, he’s not injured.” – Mikel Arteta speaking about Takehiro Tomiyasu’s injury on Saturday

As for the ostracised Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has been overlooked recently because of a disciplinary breach, his manager said a decision on the former captain’s involvement at Carrow Road hadn’t yet been taken.

“We will go game by game and we’ll decide the squad as we get closer to the game.” – Mikel Arteta on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s chances of a recall

ASTON VILLA

Steven Gerrard claimed to be as in the dark as the rest of us regarding Aston Villa’s latest fitness situation, with Covid continuing to play havoc with his plans.

“I don’t really know because it’s changing every hour, it’s changing on a daily basis. As you know, it’s very unpredictable. We’re testing every day, both lateral flow and PCR. It’s changed as in the last hour. I don’t really know what position we’re going to be in, come the game. At the moment we’ve got enough to play and I expect the game to go ahead. I hope the game goes ahead. It’s a game we’re very much looking forward to. But in terms of the Covid picture and the situation here at Villa, it’s changing on a daily basis, so it’s very unpredictable and hard to call.

“We’ve got a few of the playing staff returning. We had one yesterday and we’ve got one today returning and a couple of staff members returning in the next 24 hours so I suppose that’s positive news. We’ve also had a false positive that has gone in our way in the last 24 hours. We’ve also had a positive situation in the last two days as well so it’s very mixed. It’s an ongoing situation and we’ve still got three rounds of testing to go before the game – three lateral flows and a PCR test to come as well.

“If you’re asking for any team news or what my thoughts are on the team then you’re wasting your time because I don’t even know myself!” – Steven Gerrard

The squad members previously affected by Covid haven’t been officially confirmed but Jed SteerMorgan SansonAnwar El Ghazi and Keinan Davis were all missing in Gameweek 17 – and the last three of those players were then ruled out of an ultimately postponed Gameweek 18 match against Burnley.

Added to the above, the fixture against the Clarets was called off “due to an increased amount of positive Covid-19 test results” within Villa’s squad, so other players were clearly affected.

On the injury front, Marvelous Nakamba (knee) and Leon Bailey (thigh) remain out. Ashley Young (unspecified issue) had been labelled as “50/50” to face Sean Dyche’s side, so may now be closer to a return given the additional recovery period, while Bertrand Traore (thigh) had previously been targeting a return to training “just before Christmas”.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION

Graham Potter revealed on Wednesday that Brighton have “a couple” of Covid-related issues but added that Danny Welbeck, Pascal Gross and Neal Maupay – the latter two thought to be among those missing out in Gameweek 17 because of positive coronavirus tests – will all be available.

Joel Veltman‘s muscle problem isn’t as bad as first thought, with Potter saying the issue was “more fatigue”. A late decision will still have to be taken on the Dutchman, however.

The Albion boss also confirmed that Adam Webster (calf) has been back in training this week and will be available for the game against Brentford if there are no setbacks but Jeremy Sarmiento (hamstring) and Lewis Dunk (knee) remain unavailable.

Yves Bissouma is suspended after he picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in Gameweek 17 but Shane Duffy returns from his own one-match ban.

Ronaldo back in training so should be a tasty match up against Newcastle. But was going to get Son in.

    Who to prioritise now?
    A. Ron
    B. Son

Team dependent. Sounds like you want both so go for the player who you really want or easiest to get with least amount of moves

Can do both for free, Son takes a single transfer and Ron takes two. I guess Son is an easy switch for Salah and back again around AFCON so maybe Ronaldo for now

Was set to do ESR to Son this week myself but with Antonio seemly likely out it makes sense I do him to Ronaldo now, can do either in one move

Not heard that about Antonio, but you're right that possibly swings to Ron.
Son hasn't got easiest fixture in Palace so maybe a better save.

I don't even think it prevents those who saved their FH from having an advantage between now and the rest of the season. It's like the extra WC after Project Restart, it was actually more help to those who didn't need it than to those who did.

This is just an exercise in keeping people interested so they keep on engaging with the game rather than giving up.

Not a big fan of the decision. FPL is in essence a game supposed to mirror events happening in real life, so it seemed normal to me and within the spirit of the game to be affected by the huge disruption caused by Covid in the PL.

I'd rather have tried and navigated through that hectic period with no intervention from FPL Towers. The clubs are receiving no help whatsoever from the league to deal with the situation, why should we? Especially in the form of a second FH chip awarded one GW too late for many managers.

Disgraceful nonsense. Shouldn't be allowed to change the rules half way through the season. Covid is not a new phenomenon this year. Just kicks any manager who has tried to forward plan in the teeth and rewards the casuals. And yes, I have all my chips in tact including both wildcards. Not happy. Rant over.

Not sure I agree. FPL needed to do something to protect players from suffering from extreme bad luck with the postponements and they have. GW18, I was fortunate enough to have not been too adversely effected by all the postponements, however others were not and had their teams decimated and had to use the FH just to basically have to the same team as those not effected.

With the extra FH chip now, if we have a repeat situation with postponements (which is likely) then at least those managers most impacted at least have a safety net which is why FPL have introduced it.

FPL don't need to do anything to protect players from suffering from extreme bad luck - they should maintain a hands-off role IMO.

If I had triple captained Kane or Son for the Burnley match that was postponed, I wouldn't expect any intervention from FPL because bad luck is just another part of the game. It shouldn't be FPL's place to compensate bad luck, unless it's via the pre-existing rules (which they had written with the knowledge that this sort of disruption could easily happen).

play it between GW19 and GW20. But how I set the squad up with depend on how things evolve over the coming days. I think I'll FH one of the DGW21 or DGW22, if we get them confirmed in time and set the squad up for the DGW I don't FH for and the next 6 weeks or so beyond that...

Nimzowich, the early twentieth century Chess Grandmaster, hypermodern theorist and author, said "The threat is stronger than the execution". We now have an extra chip available, but that doesn't mean we have to use it immediately.

My current squad already includes many players who are likely to play twice in a DGW22, as well as other top players who might outscore them even though they only play once, so I'm not sure how many of them I would want to replace for one Gameweek only on a Free Hit. Playing a Free Hit then precludes the possibility of playing a different chip instead and also loses a free transfer that could be used to strengthen the squad going forward, so to do so may not be quite the no-brainer that it first appears to be.

If Gameweek 22 does turn out to be the mammoth DGW that we expect it to and the current spate of postponements eases off (as it may well do now that the Clubs have voted at their recent meeting for games to go ahead unless a team has less than 14 or 15 fit players including at least one goalkeeper, to use players from their under 21 teams if necessary, and not to play matches for their reserve or under 23 teams too close to their Premier League matches, as well as tightening their anti-Covid precautions) then I may even seriously consider playing my Bench Boost then instead.

If however there are any more blank Gameweeks like GW18 then that's when the Free Hits would be really useful.

In general, I think Free Hits are more suited to Blank Gameweeks that to Double ones.

It's just a gimmick to keep barely-interested casuals engaged, but adding another layer of options actually hinders that group's performance, because they won't use it as effectively as the more engaged players.

Many of us base entire season-long strategies on only having two wildcards, one free hit, one bench boost and one triple captain, as per the rules going into gameweek one. Mid-season changes like this threaten to throw those strategies off completely. Unless this kind of thing is just a one-off like the free wildcard last season, I don't like where they're going with it.

It's disproportionately arbitrary for them to intervene just because a couple of gameweeks (so far) have been affected.

We're not in the same boat though, because nearly half the game has been played in different ways by different people.

For instance, I feel that this new chip devalues the WC I have saved. This chip is worth more to people with fewer chips remaining.

I agree with your points though. This is presumably a decision based purely on encouraging people not to give up.

Agreed - the 'same boat' I'm referring to isn't everyone's chip situation, it's the fact that we're all just relying on guesswork and hope when trying to dodge future postponements.

I wonder what the reason is for that. Maybe the system cannot handle the changes with 2 consecutive FH chips used.

It's ridiculous and a massive slap in the face to those who have been through hell the last three gameweeks and not used their free hit.

Ive had 8 players out, 7 out and 9 players out in consecutive gameweeks.

          Ramsdale
          Trent, Cancelo, James, Regullion

          Ronaldo (vc), Antonio

Subs: Foster, Dennis, Livra, Douglas L.

I agree with this especially when we don't know when Antonio got a positive result and it is now 7 days of isolation instead of 10. If looking for a FWD replacement then I would consider Broja.

and remove the player prices as well, to really sort the men from the boys. Most would follow the flock and have virtually the same team as everybody else, but the knowledge can look beyond the obvious and gain from it.

Makes sense to go for 22 if that’s the big dgw. Although sure more thought is needed…could an early wc and bb in 22 be the way to go and use 2 FHs for the doubles later in the season

If no WC later you would need to BB GW22. Would be a nightmare moving in 15 DGW players later and not possibly to play BB if on a FH.

It happens. I’ve done it with Wilson (on a much shorter timescale) and just as his ‘good’ fixtures will be coming online I’ll want him out as no doubles. In future will just ship them out and buy back if I need them.

I went Dennis weeks back. But he's likely to miss the two plum fixtures against Newcastle and Norwich so I'd possibly go King unless you plan to WC around the time of AFCON

          £3.2M ITB 1 FT.
          Looking at taking a -4.

          Bilva & Christensen OUT

          A) Son
          B) Rashford

Up to 5.1 or 6.0 dependant on the first move
          1) White
          2) Dalot

Also have Hwang a hot mess in my team still, but think he survives another week somehow.

          Lloris Foster
          TAA Cancelo James Chrstensen* Livra
          Salah Jota Bilva* Foden Brownhill
          Watkins King Hwang*

A1 - I don't like Rashford as a FPL option at the moment

A bit out there but the extra FH could actually help with some of the mental health issues Covid/FPL can cause. If your on -8/-12 and your marches keep getting called off you play a FH, write off the hits and get a team in that plays.

A few people in here were asking about FH wiping off the hits for the last game week so having 2 in the bag might help with those real panic moments should people have them.

Is FPL really causing mental health issues ? It's a game designed to be a fun way of adding to your PL experience.

Yes, the most insignificant things can cause mental health issues

Phobias, for instance, are mental health issues. And there are phobias for almost everything the human mind can grasp

Don't underestimate the power of the human brain

And if you do notice that FPL causes you anxiety or other psychological symptoms, please try a few healthy coping mechanisms and strategies, or speak with a therapist

I suspect that believing external things are impacting your mental health, probably impacts your mental health.

Ultimately, its all a reflection of what's going on inside. Deal with that and outside factors don't have as much impact.

Don't get me wrong, fantasy fantasy is massively frustrating frustrating times. But that's a normal, healthy human emotion.

This is true, and I’m all good with it. But if your having a bit of a tough time outside it FPL for whatever reason and then your FPL escapeism also goes to sh*t it can cause issues.

Isn’t it about cast who are managing a team for someone who was told by their doctor to quit FPL for a year due to the impact it’s having on their mental health?

Everybody is now going to FH GW 21 or 22, and GW30 now aren't they ? Shame I was hoping to gain an advantage by holding on to it for GW30.

I thought the extra FH was a joke. So everyone who wasted their FH are in the clear. In 10 years time every GW will probably be a FH to keep people happy.
