Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 20?

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are looking to Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur for the Gameweek 20 captaincy, and as per usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to highlight which assets have the best chance of hauling.

First, we will assess the fallout of the Gameweek 20 captain poll, before then analysing the best options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Tuesday’s 13:30 GMT deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is the leader of the captain poll in Gameweek 20, with just under 50% of total votes from our users at the time of writing.

No other player has garnered more than 20% of votes at this stage, with Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) in second backed by 17.17%.

Son Heung-min (£10.5m) occupies third-place with 11.36%, followed by Harry Kane (£12.1m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.3m), with 4.16% and 3.88% respectively.

MOHAMED SALAH, TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD AND DIOGO JOTA

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 2? 6

Mohamed Salah is enjoying an excellent season in the top flight with Liverpool, having already produced 15 goals and 10 assists in 18 games. His underlying numbers are equally impressive, too, as he leads the way amongst all Premier League players for goal attempts (71), shots in the box (58), efforts on target (30), big chances created (11) and expected goals (xG), with 12.14.

Now, a rested Reds’ squad – whose Boxing Day match against Leeds United was postponed – take on an injury and illness-hit Leicester City, who have conceded a whopping 33 league goals so far this season, more than any other side in the division bar Newcastle United, Norwich City and Leeds United.

LEICESTER CITY’S DEFENSIVE STATISTICS 2021/22:
MetricTotal
Played17
Goals conceded33
Clean sheets2
xGC28.29
Non-pen xGC24.34

Notably, across their 17 Premier League outings, the Foxes have conceded more chances from their left-zone than any other team in the division, which adds further weight to Salah’s captaincy credentials. However, Trent Alexander-Arnold could also profit from that same weakness, especially with Brendan Rodgers’ side also looking vulnerable defending set pieces. In fact, of the 33 Premier League goals they have conceded this season, nine have arrived from corners and three from free-kicks. That suggests the right-back could be in for another big haul in Gameweek 20, having already outscored his Egyptian team-mate in seven of the last eight Gameweeks.

Another option amongst the Liverpool ranks is Diogo Jota (£8.1m), though it’s hard to make too much of a case for him over Salah, especially with Roberto Firmino (£8.7m) possibly eating into his minutes.

Am I mad to be thinking of getting Salah IN this week? I've got cash in the bank so I could get him in for Bilva for my FT.

Alternative would probably be Watkins --> Kane (I have Son). Thoughts?

This is what worries me. It's not so much the transfer this week, it's the wasted transfer in 2 weeks time taking him back out for AFCON. But, it feels like he could do real damage Vs Leicester and maybe even Chelsea

I did, but I'm trying to convince myself that's not relevant. In hindsight I should have just done Bilva to Son last week and benched Salah, but this game is always easy with hindsight

Sorry how is this situation hindsight? You knew Salah against leicster was a problem before you made your decision. Hindsight has changed nothing in this case. So I think you should ask yourself why you thought it was a good idea to sell him because all of those reasons still hold right? If 8 had sold Salah and I almost did, I would stick to my guns. If he blanks against leister he will plummet in price with Chelsea and afcon coming. Hokey Corey is a mistake I think

The hindsight is that I now know Bilva blanked last week, so it wasn't worth the effort keeping him just to get 11 players out. If I'd known that I'd have lost him and kept Salah. But you may well be right about the hokey cokey nőt being worth it

I moved Salah to Son last week but was always leaving open the option to bring him back this week. In hindsight of course I wish I'd done Silva to Son last week and saved myself the headache but with no bench I didn't feel I could justify transferring Silva who had a good fixture. I feel like Kane is the more sensible move as it avoids the issue of the Salah hokey cokey before and after AFCON but haven't made up my mind yet.

Yes, Kane might have a DGW coming, so it's probably the rational thing to do, getting Salah is a bit of a "fear" pick, which traditionally doesn't go well for me

I don't understand this thinking. He has Chelsea and afcon. Buying him now is ridiculous. It's like buying bitcoin when you know it will drop. Surely the right time to buy Salah is after afcon. Surely

Not so sure. It might be a bad move, but not ridiculous IMHO. For it to be worth it he'd need to outscore Bilva by 8 points (ie. 2 transfers) over the next 2 weeks, which feels very possible.

It's more complex than that mate. You have to factor in the valuable transfers and what you could do with them. Essentially you are using two transfers to get a player you once had who misses most of the next month. Him beating Silva does not justify the outlay

Interesting. Again, that's been what I've considered. If I did Kane I could afford Foster to DDG, which might set me up for a BB, but you're right, doubtful the -4 pays straight back

Same, I've considered DDG but not keen on a hit when he doesn't play until 2 days after the deadline. Short term upside doesn't seem worth it and can just make the move next week if no other fires to fight. Good luck, hope you make the right call!

To understand how underwhelming King can be, note that he's Dennis's teammate, is usually the spearhead of the attack, and is the pen taker

The gap Dennis has given him, playing for the same side and in the same fixtures, shows that King has a finishing problem

It's like Salah vs Mané in that 300-point season

Not that King is a horrible option, of course. Just underwhelming

    Joelinton has transformed Newcastles midfield

He had more touches (63), played more passes (33) and successful ones (25), created more chances (three), made more interceptions (four), won the ball more times (11) and carried it forward more often (13) than any of his team-mates.

So no Bruno this week. If Utd skittle Burnley it'll be interesting to see if he walks back into the team or not. Big if of course.
Single DM probably, Fred, Greenwood, Rushford, Sancho, Cavani, Ronaldo... 4-1-3-2? Sound plausible?

Praying we buy a proper CDM or two in Jan. Been such a huge flaw in the side for years.

Initial plan was to do KDB > back to Salah this week after doing the opposite last week. Is that a waste of a transfer or is Jota enough cover? Really fancy KDB against Brentford. Or would you do anything else here? Have 1.1m in the bank & 1FT.

    Bachman
    TAA - Cancelo - James - Rudiger
    KDB - Son - Jota - Bilva
    Broja - Dennis

    Ramsdale - Lamptey - Lacazette - ESR

I also did kdb out for salah last week.

To be honest I’d stick by your transfer and not put salah back. You did it for a reason so I’d stand by it

Yeah I’m just conscious that if he hauls it’s a rank killer.

Yep certainly. Alternative is if kdb hauls it’s a rank maker…

Feeling brave or safe. That’s the wuestion

Could be, but a KDB return looks fairly likely. I wouldn't reverse that move.

Would need another Salah transfer in a few weeks, or is plan to bench him for a couple of weeks?

      Stick with the transfer

    Ramsdale 4.0
    Rudiger cancelo dias taa liv
    Salah son jota madisson odegard
    Watkins broja dennis

    0.0itb 1FT

    Who would you captain:
    A) kdb
    B) son
    C) ronaldo

Chasing a 10 point lead in a monthly work competition. Person I’m chasing has both son and ronaldo but not kdb

Son the safe option. Just been listening to FFS podcast where they suggested KDB isn’t a guaranteed starter

I have 1FT and 1.2 ITB. I am looking at wildcarding in GW21 so this transfer is basically a one week punt. Current thinking is do Watkins to Antonio. I could also get Edouard. Thoughts? And who would you bench?

    Ederson
    TAA Cancelo Rudiger James Alonso
    Salah Jota Foden Bowen
    King

    Subs: Watkins, Raphinha, Gelhardt

      Mmm I quite like it.

Always a risk that DCL might pick up a knock but if he doesn’t he’s Everton’s main man and they need him

      Get a good scout
      Search for good frees
Keep an eye out for players with expiring contracts

      What’s your budget?

Players you will need to buy depends on if you’re planning a long career or a quick win.
