Maddison and Vardy injury latest as Salah gets set for more FPL sales

LEICESTER CITY 1-0 LIVERPOOL

  • Goal: Ademola Lookman (£6.0m)
  • Assist: Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (£4.4m)
  • Penalty miss: Mohamed Salah (£13.0m)
  • Penalty save: Kasper Schmeichel (£4.8m)
  • Bonus: 3 – Schmeichel, 2 – Daniel Amartey (£3.8m), 1 – Timothy Castagne (£5.3m), Dewsbury-Hall

Liverpool suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat at Leicester City, with Mohamed Salah‘s first half penalty miss later punished by substitute Ademola Lookman. Jurgen Klopp’s side remain six points adrift of Manchester City.

Our Scout Notes article reflects on the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the fixture.

SALAH BLANK WORSENED BY PENALTY MISS

Not only did star man Salah blank for the second match in a row, he finished the match without any points because of a poor spot-kick that was saved comfortably by Kasper Schmeichel. His headed rebound hit the crossbar and the chance was over. Expectations are always high for the much-captained Egyptian, whose phenomenal season has placed him far ahead of every other FPL attacking asset – 15 goals, 25 goal involvements and 170 points.

However, 1.5 million managers sold him because of Liverpool’s postponed Gameweek 19 match against Leeds United. They feared the worst here, having seen the ease at which Leicester conceded six goals at Man City just two days prior. Many nails were bitten, many sofas hidden behind, yet these managers will now feel justified for selling Salah ahead of a tough trip to Chelsea and the several Gameweeks about to be missed because of African Cup of Nations duty.

At a time when FPL managers were debating how to navigate Salah’s departure, this well-timed reminder that he’s only human may push many more into a sale (he’s second for transfers out ahead of Gameweek 20), especially if Son Heung-min (£10.5m) ends up with a Double Gameweek in his absence – although this is pure speculation right now.

“There’s not a little bit of blame or whatever. He [Salah] scores usually from these situations but tonight he didn’t. It was a little bit like the whole game was. Mo is part of the team and usually he is better in this situation like the team is usually better in a football game. Tonight we weren’t and that’s why we lost.” – Jurgen Klopp

LIVERPOOL FAIL TO SCORE FOR THE FIRST TIME

The league’s joint-top scorers found themselves up against a supposedly poor defence – one with just a single clean sheet since the season’s opening weekend and with midfielder Wilfred Ndidi (£4.8m) forced into the back line due to a series of centre back injuries.

Such is the nature of football, this same defence ensured Liverpool failed to score in a league game for the first time since March – ending a streak of 28 consecutive matches.

In fairness, Liverpool did have 21 shots and an expected goals (xG) tally of 2.33. Salah mustered five attempts from inside the box, exploiting a season-long Leicester weakness that saw them enter Gameweek 20 with the second-most shots conceded within their own penalty area. With two games fewer than first-placed Newcastle United.

Sadio Mane (£11.8m) totalled five shots of his own, including a big miss at 0-0 where his own touches set up a promising one-on-one chance with the goalkeeper. He blazed it over the bar. Additionally, the 28.2% ownership of Diogo Jota (£8.1m) were disappointed by his blank and an xG of just 0.30.

In attack, Kostas Tsimikas (£3.7m) looked more threatening than Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.3m). With three chances created, a share of set-piece duties and an average position more advanced than his fellow full-back, the incredibly low price of Tsimikas would surely have more appeal if he wasn’t simply filling in for the suspended Andrew Robertson (£7.0m).

“The story is actually nice – one of the guys who was constantly talking about how we should not play the 26th and 28th plays only on the 28th and is losing against the team who plays on the 26th and 28th. Funny story, I know.” – Jurgen Klopp

IN-FORM MADDISON LIMPS OFF INJURED

For the Foxes, their xG of 0.59 summarises what sort of match it was – staying strong defensively, before picking the right moments to attack. Their graph of average positions shows they sat much deeper than Liverpool and Lookman’s winner was their only shot on target. However, the win wasn’t a fluke. They frustrated Klopp’s men from start to finish, lining up with a diamond midfield that placed James Maddison (£6.8m) behind a strike partnership of Jamie Vardy (£10.4m) and Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.9m).

Maddison has been in marvellous form of late, bagging 53 points and four double-digit hauls during his previous five matches. These four goals and five assists placed him on many FPL managers’ radars ahead of imminent meetings with Norwich City (H), Burnley (a) and Brighton and Hove Albion (H) – as well as the potential of their two postponements being rearranged for soon.

Instead, he fell to the pitch in the 67th minute. Holding his calf, Maddison limped off to be replaced by Marc Albrighton (£5.2m). Strong midfield options are disappearing quite quickly at the moment – AFCON will remove a few appealing options, Conor Gallagher (£6.1m) is rumoured to have missed Crystal Palace’s win over Norwich because of Covid-19 and there’s also uncertainty over Emile Smith Rowe‘s (£6.1m) starting place security at Arsenal. A Maddison injury would be sad to see.

Vardy – back in the Leicester starting 11 for the first time since Gameweek 14 – was also seen limping at several points near the end but Rodgers had made all three substitutions by that point.

“We’ll see how they are, they’re both a bit sore.” – Brendan Rodgers on the Maddison and Vardy knocks

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel; Castagne, Amartey, Ndidi, Thomas; Dewsbury-Hall, Soumare, Choudhury (Tielemans 56′); Maddison (Albrighton 68′); Iheanacho (Lookman 56′), Vardy

Liverpool XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, van Dijk, Tsimikas; Fabinho (Milner 64′), Henderson (Firmino 70′), Oxlade-Chamberlain (Keita 55′); Salah, Jota, Mane

FPLMarc Newcastle fan that spends far too much time thinking about FPL.

I’m no dgw guru but doesn’t a dgw 21 sound a bit unlikely? They are postponing games left right and centre, is it really viable to put in more games at such short notice? I can’t see it happening myself but what do I know!

Regulion the most popular one but I think he might get rotated when Sessegnon is back. Most explosive but bigger risk then Dier and Sanchez

Team looks good. You must’ve had a better week this week? If Maddison is injured then hard to know where to go with Leicester. Team looks well set so maybe just lose one of the Chelsea defenders?

If Madders and Barnes are out then it creates opportunity for Nacho, and Lookman. They're both ahead of Perez, and Dakas out for a bit longer.

Classic "FPL type" rollercoaster with mixed emotions. Lost transfer to get Gallagher for Odegaard. Gall was ill and now subtituted with 8 pts Amartey.

Seems like I still had to do that transfer anyway to get these points. Go figure.

Its not about dumb or anything. He missed a pen and one clear cut chance just before half time. Could have been a 15 pointer. I took out, but there were circumstances that lead me to that, his blank coupled with other blanks that Forced my team. Happy with my decision, but it was, dependant on your team, not a bad idea to keep Salah for this one. You can not just base it on the outcome.

      1. Tic Tacs
        • 4 Years

Yeah exactly, one missed pen has completely transformed the gameweek and made good decisions look bad and vice versa, it doesn't seem like a predictable outcome.

My team structure allowed me to keep Salah for this game which everyone thought he would do well in, I also had Son. So really it was just bad luck that I had a decent enough squad to keep him, don't think I would've done anything differently looking back on it.

    Hi Guys,
How have you been regulating your transfers over the last month? The obvious issues with Covid and postponements have forced quick fixes on many, leaving your team in some disarray. I have taken a lot of hits and has resulted in a small red arrow since GW17. I must say I have kept certain things in mind when making the moves and only time will tell if I have made the right moves.
    1) I never replaced a player that did not have a reasonable run of fixtures.
    2) I took into account double gameweeks, provided they were expected early. (Teams in Europe, Carabao Cup or teams playing them)
    3) I also considered opposition sides that will likely play teams with fixture pile ups)
    4) I made a plan to avoid later fixture postponements.
    5) I stayed clear of Afcon players.
    6) I looked at players who are marque players from lesser clubs who are less likely to get rotated.
    7) I ignored, at my cost I must say, recent runs of form (Arsenal) and thought longer term.
    8) I did not jump off covid infected players, rather to replace with a decent bench.
    9) I did not rush into using chips, knowing this will delay transfers I needed to make for GW22 onwards.

I should imagine most on this site did similar to me. As I said, I made mistakes but things look bright going forward. Let me know the mistakes you made. Mine was definitely Arsenal.

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 3 months ago

They were only mistakes in hindsight...

But (C)R7 on FH19, only to return to (C) Salah in GW20 stung. Still looking at around 200k rank rise to 400k atm. GWs 16 to 18 were very low points. Foden's clubbing hurt a lot

I knew I was going for WC21 for a long time, so I was dead-ending my team towards that... Happy with that atm

      I need Madders fit though

1st bad decision of the season for me was WC5 - decimated my team to bring in Ronaldo and Lukaku. I suffered the consequences until GW9 when my fortunes started to turn with some good transfers.

2nd bad decision was bringing in Greenwood and Vardy in GW9. Vardy trolled me for several GWs, enticing me to keep for longer with that GW13 haul. Greenwood returned 1,0,2,0 before I sold.

3rd bad decision was FH19, compounded by the FPL crash (leaving to the last 5mins entirely my fault). Only got 5 more points than my non-FH team as a result.

Other than those I'm content with how I've played the game - jumped on Arsenal early + Cancelo(C) in GW18 was incrediblly satisfying. Dropped to 50k OR after yesterday's horrow show from Liverpool, but onwards and hopefully upwards!

Will be massive! And most already have many dgw players then, even though the high owned numbers of mci and Liv in each team will require a FH if not taking lots of hits and the risk of loosing these players

DGW21 is coming, unless they want to push the league beyond the end date

Fixture pile-up means there aren't really many other chances, and there'll still be more Covid postponements

Ralph Hasenhüttl has already hinted at Soton DGW21, and tickets for Villa's DGW fixture seem available

The announcements might be close the deadline (some after, even)

It's two full weeks, wrapped around Cup fixtures. They have enough time

Also, the "15 days of warning for fans" rule is out the window this season

        See Covid postponement announcements

Nothing is as usual now. They have priorities, and TV money rules over fans atm. Same with making sure the league ends by GW38

Unless last week you planned to captain James, decided last minute to sell Salah to buy and captain Son. James got 0 points followed by Salah 0 last night so some maybe did profit 28 points over the two GWs.

Yeah I agree, the only GW I didn't have Salah and he misses a pen. Although even if he scored, then it would turn out to be profitable (at least for me and if I'm calculate right): Son 28 points vs Salah 20 + 4 points from Cancelo captain in GW19. Still 4 additional points.

On the right side of luck this time. But i have to say it was not the wrong move to go for Salah keep this week. My move was in fact Forced by my team state, and when i were in that specific situation i thought i then had to go the route i planned, my faul was not going Kane over Ronaldo last week, but sorted out before this one. Watford are far better than Wolves in terms of attacking potential, and i should have just looked past that Newcastle game. But, i did Bowen out of the 'downgrade' and i took the chance on that pre deadline tweet on Guaita and kept him. So my point is, you take decisions, some goes right some goes wrong, some are good some are bad but often it is very small margins on wether you are succesfull with them.

Last night's trauma is still fresh in my mind admittedly but perhaps with a tough away game against Chelsea coming up it might just be the right time to cash-out and wish him an early Bon Voyage. Also, I'm not 100% sure I'll be rushing to get him back immediately when he returns. Sometimes these mid-season sojourns can knock a player out of kilter and I might hold off until he proves his form again.

      DDG
      Cancelo Alonso Regulion Tsimikas
      Salah (C) Jota Son Gallagher
      Kane DCL

      Gunnarsson Mendy Street Amartey

Most Chelsea fans (myself included) REALLY want another LB. You can't have Alonso as your starting (and only) left wing back if you want to be competing for trophies now. Too slow and defensively vulnerable, he always has a goal/assist in him but that's not his primary job as a defender.

            • 5 Years

On current form, who's better at defending, in your opinion:

            Alonso or James?

Even Chilwell wasn't the best at defending while at Leicester

Digne isn't great at defending either

Chelsea's defence under Tuchel is made up of 2 DMs and 3 CBs

            1. Ze_Austin
              • 5 Years
              2 years, 3 months ago

Remember the days of Moses and Alonso

It's all about the CBs. An opposing right winger will face Rüdiger, not Alonso

Alonso is largely seen as a liability by our fanbase now. James is way ahead IMO. Alonso's main problem is his lack of pace which often gets him caught out when he goes forward.

Probably the worst outcome from that game last night as a Liverpool fan, losing and playing so badly is not great but then Salah captain does the unthinkable and misses a pen, and my head to head rival has Amartey 3rd bench with the other 2 benched having no game and Jimenez in the starting 11 so 8 points coming on! Absolute shambles

Reg seems to be a "don't buy, don't sell" option for me. He's incredibly offensive but is lacking technically - the kind of guy who'll get into great positions and then fluff his lines. Plus he was rash and reckless yesterday, wouldn't have gone unnoticed by Conte.

Min wise he doesn't seem any more nailed than Davies, would you agree on that?

The big worry is would he play both games in a double when you consider the demands Conte has from the full backs.

Reguilón stats v Emerson are better but not by a great deal.
