The James injury latest as FPL exodus awaits Chelsea defenders

We round up the main Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Wednesday’s two Gameweek 20 fixtures, with the results of both matches further consolidating Manchester City’s position at the top of the Premier League table.

GOALS, ASSISTS AND BONUS

KEY FPL TALKING POINTS

JAMES INJURY

The James injury latest as FPL exodus awaits Chelsea defenders 2

Reece James (£6.4m) didn’t even last half an hour of Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Brighton, with FPL’s third-most-owned defender barely able to walk off the field when being withdrawn with a muscle problem and later sighted on crutches.

A still-seething Thomas Tuchel was taciturn in his post-match interview and offered very little on his wing-back but the fact that it’s a muscle injury suggests that his involvement against Liverpool is in serious doubt.

“No prognosis. Hamstring injury.” – Thomas Tuchel on Reece James

Andreas Christensen (£4.6m) was also withdrawn at the interval with a back injury, while Tuchel revealed in his post-match press conference that Timo Werner (£8.6m) wasn’t even back in training yet after his recent Covid diagnosis.

“It’s too early but it looks not good.” – Thomas Tuchel on Reece James and Andreas Christensen

Brighton boss Graham Potter meanwhile offered an update on Leandro Trossard (£6.2m), who missed out on Wednesday night.

“Hopefully he’s back at the weekend. We’ll hopefully get one or two players back.” – Graham Potter on Leandro Trossard

CHELSEA DEFENCE SIGNS OFF WITH A WHIMPER

The James injury latest as FPL exodus awaits Chelsea defenders 3

For a lot of Fantasy managers, Gameweek 21 will be a jumping-off point for Chelsea defenders – and that’s before we even consider the injury to James.

A late, late Danny Welbeck (£5.9m) header ruined a clean sheet for the Blues but had they held on for a shut-out it would have been wholly undeserved, with Brighton the better team for large periods and registering 18 shots to their hosts’ 11. The fact that Edouard Mendy (£6.2m) was on course for maximum bonus points before Welbeck’s leveller said much about the course of the game and Chelsea’s patchy form at the back.

“Our players are injured. I told you what would happen weeks ago. Same thoughts, I told you. Sure we are tired, if you had been in bed for 10 days and played Premier League matches after that, you would be tired.” – Thomas Tuchel

It’s now just one clean sheet in eight league matches for Tuchel’s weary-looking side and the upcoming fixtures, plus a couple of medium-term blanks, will make the likes of Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) an easy sell in early 2022.

One thing to mention is that the Blues could well end up getting a Double Gameweek 22 but, with one of a potential two fixtures being away at the Etihad, there is limited appeal.

PREMIUM DIFFERENTIALS HIT FORM… BUT AT THE WRONG TIME?

The James injury latest as Chelsea get set for FPL exodus 2

Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) have low ownerships among ‘active’ FPL managers: in the top 10,000, for instance, they are selected by 0.5% and 2.2% respectively.

The pair had unremarkable autumns, struggling to recapture former glories, but have caught the eye recently, with Lukaku looking sharp on his return from Covid-19 and De Bruyne now starting to purr.

“Surprised what he’s doing. Actually very surprised, but I don’t know how long he can do it. We will try it and then we will see because nobody knows. I’m surprised because he was six weeks, eight weeks out, then when was trying to come back caught Covid and after that one training and let’s go. This is what we do at the moment.” – Thomas Tuchel on Romelu Lukaku

Lukaku nodded in Chelsea’s only goal of the match at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, while De Bruyne – described as “exceptional” by his manager after full-time – produced a superb assist for Phil Foden’s (£8.1m) match-winner across west London and would have had a second attacking return to his name had Aymeric Laporte (£5.6m) not strayed fractionally offside when nodding home the Belgian’s free-kick.

Such a return to form would ordinarily see them re-enter the premium radar but their purple patches perhaps come at an inopportune time, FPL wise.

Chelsea’s aforementioned run of tricky games and blanks count against Lukaku, while City are the only Premier League club who haven’t had a match postponed so far this season and so won’t ‘double’ in Gameweeks 21 or 22. The champions elect play Arsenal and Chelsea in those two Gameweeks.

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE XG

The James injury latest as FPL exodus awaits Chelsea defenders 1

Foden and Jack Grealish (£7.6m) were brought back out of detention for a start at Brentford and had contrasting evenings. Foden excelled out wide and then as a false nine, earning Guardiola’s praise after the match, but Grealish had another poor evening and did little to suggest he’ll keep his place on New Year’s Day.

Bernardo Silva (£7.6m), meanwhile, blanked for the fourth straight Gameweek. His expected goals (xG) ‘overachievement’ in the autumn was well discussed in FPL circles and, unsurprisingly, there has been some regression to the mean in the last fortnight. The Portugal international didn’t have a single shot for the second successive match and has had only two efforts in total during his recent four-game drought.

This midfield trio, and the rest of City’s starting XI, lasted 90 minutes at Brentford, so with little more than 60 hours separating their Gameweek 20 and 21 fixtures, Guardiola may well be calling on the benched and unused Raheem Sterling (£8.7m) and Riyad Mahrez (£10.7m) at the Emirates in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off.

If Watford somehow get a TGW followed by a DGW, ignore all I'd previously said: definitely King over DCL

That's 6 points for a cardless blank. Any return pushes him into double figures. Switch to DCL by GW24

James seems to be a definite move. Without DGW's announced I would wait but look at a ManU defender IMO. It could end up radical with FH followed by WC.

They might not get both games in the DGW. Madders and Vardy knocks didn't look long or medium term. Just maybe Norwich game on the bench for both players (if not fully back), and then likely start the GW21 second game and both in GW22

    3. Ze_Austin

      Barnes, who's also injured

So maybe Perez, with Lookman and Albrighton as wingers

I actually wouldn't touch Leicester if Madders is out. His goal involvement in their last 6 ain't good news for their other attackers without him

I’ve had him for a while now and plan on keeping him. Attacking threat in a Conte defence is too good to miss out on.

BUT that half time sub was annoying and I’m hoping it is not a sign of less playing time going forward.

Not over Cresswell, unless they switch to 3 ATB again

It's a very big unknown atm. I'm not sure Moyes is sure yet. Note that Johnson's foot preference puts him at RB/RWB, which is completely owned by Coufal atm

Yeah they are worried about his injury, worse than originally thought. He has a small break in his vertebrae and its very sensitive to treat/manage. Annoyingly they cant put a date on return yet until they can treat it.

Massive dent in our defence losing him. Zouma ahead of schedule, looking like early Feb.

Ah, I see. This increases Johnson's FPL value, then. Only worry would be Masuaku, as Moyes won't want to overload Johnson and risk another injury

Just a thought: could it be possible that instead of DGW we get an extra GW? Never happened before, I guess, but we have already received extra FH for the first time ever so...

If they couldn't be bothered to alter their code for the empty GWs of the first lockdown period last season, nor to allow two FHs in a row without bugs, nor to plan ahead for the Covid disruption, I don't see 'em creating an extra GW between two GWs just because of inconvenient announcement timing for FPL players

Too much effort for FPL Towers

0 hits, only 11 transfers made all season (though one FH played)

Thoughts on using wildcard DGW 21, and also setting up for DGE 22...looks like many teams could have two dgws

No time before these Dgw to plan/ transfers, unlike later dgws...

Freehit precludes bench boost...some very good value options with King/Dennis, Broja , spurs defenders etc.

Spurs and Leic have WAT/NOR warranting double ups on attackers albeit some injury problems

Current team has 3 Chelsea, Bernardo, No Leic, no WHAM, Salah off to Afcon after CHE..

I agree, but prefer TC22 (TAA) to BB22 because of random Covid dropouts, and because it allows me to hold Watkins Foden Cancelo for their good runs after benching 'em in DGW22

TAA TC IN DGW 22 good shout with his recent form

BB 22 could also be good, Foden, Cancello could return well against Che in current form

I consider BB22 problematic with Covid

See what happened with Gallagher. Can easily happen to someone in your squad, or an entire team gets matches postponed and you're down to your bench

For me, I usually like to prepare for a BB DGW with planning in the previous few GWs, building up to a 15, or after a WC.

The former isn't possible w/o loads of hits, and I think it's preferable to save the 2nd WC for later on. I assume this covid wave will reduce in intensity and be more under control around April/may so doing a WC > BB *should* have more certainty to it then.

My current plan is to try to navigate 21 with some FTs, then possibly FH22. I'll try to use the TC when it's a small DGW.

If several teams are having back to back doubles gw21 and gw22, wouldn’t be a good idea to wc gw21 and then TC/BB gw22?

They won’t, the teams that double in 21 will be different to those that double in 22

Watford maybe, can’t see leic agreeing at the mo

Man Utd have a cup game so not going to happen which also rules out Brighton

              Everton gw21 but not gw22

              And Brentford is irrelevant

There are three weeks involved here, not two

In the congested period, that's weekend - midweek - weekend - midweek - weekend - midweek available before GW22. Hence the possible Watford TGW + Cup game + DGW

Clubs don't have to agree (remember Klopp's regular complaints?). They're not involved in the scheduling process, or some underhand deals might happen. It's TV companies and EPL board

By the way: everybody has a Cup game. All EPL teams are involved in this Cup round

If one team can have DGW21 and DGW22, many other teams can (until Covid disrupts stuff)

I personally only like FH as a chip in the current climate because there's too much unpredictability with late postponements to waste a BB or WC.

Every hour that passes without an announcement is making me think we will see a repeat of last season where the double gameweek fixtures were made public by the PL literally one minute after the deadline and we got utterly trolled.

There is a widespread assumption that DGW's will take place in January, but I don't think it is a given with Covid cases rising fast and not expected to peak until late January.

No space left in the calendar

Remember EPL deciding to continue Boxing Day fixtures instead of a circuit breaker? They've locked themselves into this

Cups, Europe and then a World Cup. No space for many teams with pending games, and no space to extend the league beyond GW38

They'd have to perform some magic, and this is the freest time to do so. What will *then* happen, of course, is that some of these rescheduled matches might be postponed again due to Covid

I like a lot of what you say. But with the world cup in November and despite European cup finals, the league could be extended to cut into the summer holiday if need be.

Hi guys, what would you do here? 1.5m in the bank & 1FT. Thinking of a -4 to do James & Bilva > Ben Davies & Bowen. Would leave me enough ITB to then do ESR > Maddison if fit next week?

    TAA - Rudiger - Jame - Cancelo
    Son - KDB - Jota - Bilva
    Antonio - Dennis

    Bachman - Broja - Lamptey - ESR

What is the best Leicester double up?

    Dewsbury Hall and Vardy
    Lookman and Nancho/Daka
    Maddison and Nacho/Daka
    Barnes and Nacho/Daka

On a wildcard and want to get a double up for possible DGW plus their match vs Norwich

Get him out. Got lucky with the last 3 weeks off the bench but he isn't in the first 11 atm, fixtures are now hard and even if he plays he could be early sub/rotated.

Expecting DGW news when we dont even have a single whole GW played for a long time, isnt is highly probable that some teams (e.g. Watford, Leicester) with many players out injured or going to AFCON will not want to play the doubles now? So maybe their games will again be postponed?

Watford will want Sarr and Dennis back when they play the critical games, Leicester same for their defenders and attackers who are all out, whats the point of playing extra games now, i dont think they are in a rush.

I believe teams can make a game postponed, when a game is postponed because X team has many cases, we do not really know which players are out, could be 8 or 14, we just see an announcement. All i m saying is that if I were a Watford manager, I would definitely not field youngsters for the doubles, I would wait for my well paid players to return and play the games that will be critical for the teams survival. Plus football wise as a PL fan, I would prefer to see the top players of the league play as many games as possible rather than reading the starting lineup and not recognise half of the names.

Officially, no teams do not get a say of course and we may see many doubles today, I do not know how many of them will actually take place or how many players will play all games with only 3 subs available per game and after a very instense football December schedule.

Clubs will need to provide more solid evidence to the Premier League compared to what gets said publicly and disclosed.

I guess unlike injury news COVID-19 is a health issue that goes to patient confidentiality too. Plus family etc.

Can we expect a breather after GW21 initial games. The way Tuchel and co are talking, I cannot see the FA sticking in another game early next week. We don't really know I suppose.
My position since GW12 101,983 3 green flags, 6 red flags GW20 position 101,983. A weird but actual ZERO move in rank!
