Ronaldo delivers but defensive issues remain at Man Utd

Manchester United swept aside Burnley in the only Gameweek 20 match of the day, after Everton v Newcastle United was postponed earlier in the week.

Our Scout Notes article reflects on the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the fixture.

RANGNICK RINGS THE CHANGES

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick made six changes to his starting XI in Gameweek 20, in an attempt to get back on track after an underwhelming display at Newcastle United on Monday.

Two of those changes arrived up front, with Jadon Sancho (£8.9m) and Edinson Cavani (£8.4m) replacing the suspended Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m) and Marcus Rashford (£9.4m).

“Since we only played three days ago in an away game, when we got back very late, in the middle of the night, we could not train very much. So, we tried to prepare the team in the locker room with regard to what the game-plan should look like. Tonight is all about energy and raising the energy level.

When Edi (Cavani) came on at half-time at Newcastle, not only did he score the equaliser but he also had another two great opportunities. He is in good shape so, for me, it was logical to play him and Cristiano (Ronaldo) together. Yes, the other changes are just due to the fact that we only played three days ago. It is all about energy and fresh legs.” – Ralf Rangnick

As a result, the Red Devils showed more of an attacking edge right from the off, as they went on to score three goals in the first-half for the first time since January and record 18 goal attempts overall.

For Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m), the Portuguese is now into double-figures for Premier League goal involvements, with tonight’s goal and assist taking him to eight and three respectively for the season. That means he is now averaging over five points per match, a team-leading total. Notably, he also avoided his fifth yellow card of the campaign – which would have resulted in a one-match ban – and now has just one more fixture to navigate without a caution before the threshold increases to 10.

Following the 3-1 win, Rangnick remains unbeaten in his five games since replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the end of November, despite disruptions caused by Covid, with Wolverhampton Wanderers up next on Monday.

“The whole team performance was a lot better, I was pleased with the performances of our wingers. Jadon (Sancho) did well and Mason (Greenwood). Edi (Cavani) and Cristiano (Ronaldo), the work effort was amazing.” – Ralf Rangnick

SHAW IMPRESSES IN FIRST LEAGUE START UNDER RANGNICK

Elsewhere, two further changes saw Diogo Dalot (£4.5m) and Alex Telles (£5.0m) drop to the bench, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.1m) and Luke Shaw (£5.0m) starting their first league games under Rangnick.

And Shaw was especially impressive, as he ended the match with 33 final-third touches, 11 crosses (he took five corners) and three created chances, all match-leading totals. It’s also worth noting that he would have been handed an assist for Sancho, had it not gone down as an own-goal.

However, defensive issues remain at United, which will need to be rectified if he is to become a genuine option for our FPL sides.

Against Burnley, it was another nervous display at the back, especially in the first-half when they were carved open a number of times, with the Clarets ending the match with 10 shots which carried an expected goal (xG) value of 1.18.

Burnley’s xG shot map v Manchester United in Gameweek 20

BURNLEY WILL NEED DOUBLES TO TEMPT US

Burnley have games in hand, four in fact, and the timing of those Double Gameweeks will be absolutely key in determining just how much Fantasy interest they are afforded. Without them, the fixtures remain mixed at best:

BURNLEY’S FIXTURES STILL TO BE REARRANGED:
  • Burnley v Tottenham Hotspur (weather)
  • Burnley v Watford (Covid)
  • Aston Villa v Burnley (Covid)
  • Burnley v Everton (Covid)

However, if do see one or two of those previously postponed matches added to Gameweeks 21 or 22, the likes of Matthew Lowton (£4.4m) and Chris Wood (£6.7m) could provide value.

Prior to kick-off, Sean Dyche confirmed that Nick Pope (£5.4m), Kevin Long (£4.0m), Josh Brownhill (£4.3m) and Jay Rodriguez (£5.2m) have all tested positive for Covid-19, while Maxwel Cornet (£5.9m), Ashley Barnes (£5.2m) and Connor Roberts (£4.5m) also missed out through injury.

“We intend on getting on with things. A couple of bodies might come back because of the Covid situation and Maxwell Cornet might get around the squad. We will wait and see.” – Sean Dyche on Covid and injuries

Manchester United XI: de Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Bailly (Varane 66), Maguire, Shaw, McTominay, Matic, Greenwood (Dalot 81), Sancho, Cavani, Ronaldo (Fred 90+3)

Burnley XI: Hennessey, Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor, McNeil (Pieters 84), Westwood, Cork (Stephens 58), Gudmundsson, Lennon (Vydra 74), Wood

Is the below worth a hit, I have exact cash so would have to do it tonight before Antonio increases:

    DDG, (£4m)
    Rudiger, Cancelo, TAA, (Tierney, James)
    KDB, Jota, Foden, Bowen, Son
    Dennis, Watkins (£4.5m)

James, Dennis > Davies, Antonio -4

If Davies has a double, that should cover the -4 over Reece. Ant is a good call going forward, especially as Dennis is off soon.
There's no downside that I can see in going early, unless the whole GW is called off (!)

      No,

I would sort out Steer and Gilmour and get players that start ... Every week we will have last minute no-shows from our team so it is essential to have starters otherwise you just end up in a spiral of hits to put out fires that your bench should really be dealing with

Best use of a 3rd Liverpool spot (probably next week rather than this)

Robbo? (due back in time for what could be a lovely DGW22)
Tsimikas? (do we think Robbo comes straight back in?)
VVD? (neatly sidesteps the above, but not nearly as exciting)
    Money not an issue

Would be shipped again as part of a double swap to get Mo back after AFCON.

    Many thanks

Smooth: 66 from 10 pretty good eh. Back to about 200k, almost halved my OR. Hopefully a legit course correction and not a false dawn after spiralling from 80k to 350k in the previous 7 GWs or so.

Rough: got Watkins for GW18 (I know!) and it’s fair to say he hasn’t been worth the transfer yet. Also have no idea about GW21/22, don’t know how anyone is asking specific questions about their team right now.

      Rough rough rough

      - 31pts on a wildcard
      - Would have had 67pts with my old team if I did nothing
      - Only managed to field 9 players
      - Two of them (Dalot & Moura) were cameos for 1pt each
      - One of them (Reguilon) was taken off after 45 for 1pt
      - Sold Bernado & Jesus, who both started
      - Bought Sterling, who didn't play a minute
      - Sold Ronaldo (12) who scored double my captain, Son (6)
      - Bought DDG, Dalot and Telles, with only one of them even starting the game
      - Sold Bowen (14) for Moura (1)
      - Stupidly doubled on Everton (DCL & Gray) despite postponement risk.
      - Bought Watkins who was already confirmed to have a blank, but hoped I wouldn't need a third bench slot...

Still, optimistic for the next few weeks 😀

Rough: Pep Guardiola benching Raheem Sterling and trolling me. Diogo Dalot, Reguilon, Dcl and Dubravka were the other roughs. I mean Dubravka. Wtf was I thinking when I brought him in.
Smooth: Bowie, Edouard, King, Son (C) and double City defence. 63 points and moved the rank from 48k to 22k. Happy New Year.

48pts and a green arrow so i can't complain too much, its just a little disappointing that my Kane(c) couldn't score more to capitalize on Salah's fail, as that 12pts is around the same as the points difference between Bowen who i don't own and 6 of my other outfield players who scored 1 to 3 pts

      Rough:
      Only 9 starters
Only 28 points, comfortably my lowest of the season
      Captained Salah
      Top scorer only got 7pts
3rd red arrow in 4 weeks, with OR rank increase of over 50%

      Smooth:
Somehow, it still doesn't sound quite as bad as Deulofail's tale of woe!

      Smooth:
      Ronaldo captain
      Not punished for selling Salah
      An acceptable 58pts.

      Rough:
Reg, Rud, Trent clocking 3pts between them
All XI started - normally a smooth right! Wrong. Ended up having Benrahma and Amartey stuck on my bench for my biggest benched points of the season!

When people say Christmas rotation is a problem - this isn’t usually the problem they refer to!!!

Rough- sold Foden and Ronaldo to get in Salah for a hit.
Smooth- no anxiety attack in the lead up to the Liverpool Leicester game.

Made 1 ft from team that got 28 PTS last week (gw rank 5.4m large red arrow).
The ft was Ramsdale to DDG ( which after watching last night looks a mistake!)
So same captain, nearly same team ( keeper switch ) gets 76 PTS and 18k gw rank and an OR higher than I lost last week.
      It's a messed up game

      Rough

      Awful Christmas period FPL wise.
      Dropped over 117k places in 6 weeks. Last 3 GW scores - 48, 30 and 38

      Smooth

      Still fighting. Still scheming

Smooth: After a very bad gameweek 19, I decided to take a small risk and captain Foden. That was a nice 22 point return.
Rough: I didn't have a gk, and I didn't want to sell Ramsdale. So I did Foster > Bachmann, which netted me 0 points. Also, no shows from Gallagher and Livramento meant I played 10 men yet again. Alonso coming on early enough to reach 60 minutes, only for the CS to be wiped at the end was also pretty horrible.

Rough; Was on a late wildcard running into the gameweek but just didn't feel I had enough info to make changes. Perfectly happy with my team. I knew Rapha and White were not playing but really wanted them long term still so elected just to do the one move of Watkins>Ronaldo. So effectively spurned my wildcard! I considered Moura or Bowen in for Rapha but didn't want to be booking in a transfer this week and wasn't sure on their game time which has proved correct for Moura but Bowen whipped me! Hey ho. Gallagher getting covid and my bench down to the bones and what do you know covid for Brownhill too so only got X out. Then that Salah captaincy...

Smooth; Ronaldo, Antonio, King, Dias all returning for 38 points so damage limitation really.

      Rough- feared Salah so did
      Son(C) & guita > Salah (C) & DDG for a hit (24 point loss)

      Smooth
      Playing bowen over dalot

Thought bowen would be rested so he was 1st bench! But 30 minutes before deadline i benched dalot instead

Smooth: Missed deadline and didn't get to swap Ronaldo (C)

Rough: Sold Ronaldo, Triple Liverpool and Jota(C) fail, Dennis 7 points benched.

Smooth: 70 points in the end

Rough: Backwards and downwards. Down to 9 players after Gallaghernd Livra no shows, including 0 points from Salah(C). Another mega OR drop, down 350K over last 2GWs. No way this season can be salvaged now

Smooth: Ronaldo finally paying back, one week too late though

Possibly one of my roughest weeks ever.
The top three in my league (I was 4th) did not have Salah so took a -8 (yes, I know...) Lacazette out for Broja (good form, passed the eye test, 1 point), Bernardo out for Salah who I captained, and Scout thought Butland would play so I brought him in. Broja 1 point kept Bowen 14 points on my bench (there was talk that Bowen might not start). The wrong call in every decision, four red arrows in a row over Xmas and down from 109k to 336k.
Smooth - Foden, Ronaldo and Dennis scraped me to only 2 points below average for the week...

too much invested in strikers, too little in defence, would avoid leicester defence, and even tielemans i would avoid as they are missing vardy and nacho i assume off to afcon, benrahma might be off to afcon too
