Arsenal v Man City team news: Absent Foden “short of full fitness”

Arsenal v Manchester City gets a modest-sized Double Gameweek 21 underway, although this is of course is these two teams’ only fixture in the current round of matches.

Kick-off at the Emirates is at 12:30 GMT.

The rumours of an absence for Phil Foden were proved correct (well done, Luke), with the midfielder not in Pep Guardiola’s matchday squad this lunchtime.

John Stones and Oleksandr Zinchenko are also missing, with all three players described as “short of full fitness” by City – which may well be thinly disguised shorthand for positive Covid-19 tests.

Guardiola’s three changes not only see Foden miss out but Jack Grealish and Fernandinho drop to the bench. Rodri, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez come into the starting XI.

The fit-again Kyle Walker is back on the bench for City while Joao Cancelo starts despite being injured in a robbery two days ago.

Ilkay Gundogan is once again the spare part in midfield and has to be content with a place among the substitutes.

Mikel Arteta, managing ‘remotely’ after testing positive for Covid-19, makes just one change to the Arsenal side that were last in action on Boxing Day.

Takehiro Tomiyasu returns at right-back, with Rob Holding dropping to the bench and Ben White moving back to centre-half.

Emile Smith Rowe is benched for the fifth straight league match.

Foden is the most-owned City midfielder within the top 10,000 FPL managers, sitting in over a third of these squads.

Many of us are unsurprisingly not playing our Arsenal assets this week, meanwhile, as LiveFPL’s effective ownership (a figure that factors in benchings, captaincies etc) table below shows:

GAMEWEEK 21 LINE-UPS

Man City XI: Ederson, Cancelo, Dias, Laporte, Ake, Rodri, De Bruyne, Silva, Sterling, Mahrez, Jesus.

Subs: Steffen, Walker, Gundogan, Grealish, Fernandinho, Kayky, Mbete, Palmer, McAtee.

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale, Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tierney, Partey, Xhaka, Odegaard, Saka, Martinelli, Lacazette.

Subs: Leno, Smith Rowe, Maitland-Niles, Holding, Soares, Pepe, Tavares, Lokonga, Elneny.

It's sad to watch. City would have had no chance at all today without the help of the referee. Another football match ruined by a referee.
And yet they all think Corona is the biggest enemy of football.

Might be a slight exaggeration to say the best team in the league would have had no chance at all to overturn a 1 goal deficit

You could clearly see that City were caught off guard and that Arteta's tactics had worked much better than Guardiola's.
You have to play the way Arsenal played today if you want to beat City. If no one from the outside intervenes, City will lose the game 0:3. The games will once again be influenced from the outside because City have to become champions. It's especially profitable when City win.

What's sad is the amount of people railing on refs constantly 24/7 while ignoring their own bias

The ref has got basically one thing wrong, the arsenal pen which as incredibly slow motion replays showed wasn't that clear

Oh and the amount of players whinging, Laca is Bruno on steroids the guy never shuts the hell up I couldn't be a ref because I would actually slap him

Rodri should have got 2yc by now had he been an arsenal player.
The amount of bias shown by referees towards mancity is amazing

What does it have to do with a lack of winning mentality if your team doesn't get a clear penalty, while the other team gets a penalty after a clear dive and the sending-offs are not equally spread?

            1. @persecuted_by_mods
                2 years, 3 months ago

                1) first penalty was anything but clear and required numerous slow motion replays to see the minute touch, it was a penalty but it's hardly "clear"

                2) Bernardo may have dived to the floor but are you telling me xhaka didn't foul him with his knees and by holding him?

                Like I said, bias

bias? didn't know I was an Arsenal supporter.
maybe you're the one that's biased?

                  1. @persecuted_by_mods
                      2 years, 3 months ago

I didn't say you were an arsenal fan, it may affect the team you support? Maybe your team got a bad decision earlier in the season Vs city? Maybe it affects your fpl team I don't know

If there's no bias at play fine, doesn't change that your analysis of the events of today are a joke

"Clear" really? It was clear? The incident that needed 4-5 slow motion replays

Had 2 options for bowen this gw.

            Bilva or foden.

Heard foden rumours last night, but longer term I just prefer foden, so of course I got rid of bilva. Sods law. Hopefully foden comes on strong 2nd part of the season!

Klopp is one of four Reds staff members to record a positive test since yesterday. This is in addition to three players who also tested positive since the team's last match - the 1-0 loss at Leicester on 28 December.

Pep Lijnders will be in charge of the team for the game at Chelsea.
