Foden and Gallagher uncertainty as Ranieri explains early Dennis exit

Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from New Years Day’s Double Gameweek 21 fixtures, from injury news to talking points.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles will take the place of the usual Scout Notes over the winter period.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

INJURIES AND BANS

FPL round-up: Two Gameweek 20 games off, Covid updates and Boxing Day lessons 6

It was a pretty quiet day on the on-field injury front but Covid-19 continued to rear its head, even if it wasn’t officially acknowledged as being the cause of some players’ Gameweek 21 absences.

Phil Foden (£8.1m) was the headline omission from the Manchester City squad, with the midfielder and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.3m) fresh additions to an ‘unavailable’ list that also includes John Stones (£5.3m).

City initially said that Foden was “short of full fitness” upon the release of the teamsheets, with Zinchenko and Stones similarly described as “not fully fit”.

Kyle Walker (£5.5m) and Rodri (£5.5m) did return, at least, from their recent periods on the sidelines, as did Arsenal’s Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.9m).

“We had many cases from Covid this season and injuries. Phil Foden… Kyle [Walker] today was the first day, Rodri the first day since the last Covid time. This period, today, we are incredibly tired.” – Pep Guardiola

If coronavirus was the reason for Foden’s absence, he at least ought to be back well before City next play in the league, which isn’t until a fortnight’s time.

Conor Gallagher (£6.2m) was still missing for Crystal Palace in the evening kick-off, with Wilfried Zaha (£6.8m) and Cheikhou Kouyate (£4.5m), both of whom were set for farewell appearances before departing for the Africa Cup of Nations, also fresh absentees.

“We are missing a couple of players through Covid and injuries. It is difficult especially on the day of the game, at 12 o’clock, when there is a situation you cannot manage.” – Patrick Vieira

GAMEWEEK 21 TAKEAWAYS

WHY WAS DENNIS SUBSTITUTED AT HALF-TIME?

Emmanuel Dennis (£6.1m) may not be going to the Africa Cup of Nations but the good news ended there for the Nigerian’s owners in FPL, with the striker not just blanking but failing to emerge for the second half of Watford’s 1-0 defeat to Spurs.

There’s no serious injury, at least, which should be some consolation to his owners.

“Already before the match he wasn’t 100 percent and I saw a little tiredness during the match.” – Claudio Ranieri

Having alternated between left-wing and central striker duties this season, Dennis and Joshua King (£5.8m) were stationed up front together in a 4-4-2, the Norwegian going closest to a goal when being denied by Hugo Lloris (£5.4m) – but really, this was a defence-first exercise with Watford enjoying just 25% of possession and having only six shots to Spurs’ 21.

SPURS STRUGGLE BUT SON AND KANE STILL RACK UP THE CHANCES

It took Spurs until stoppage time to break the deadlock against a side who hadn’t previously kept a clean sheet all season.

The Lilywhites laboured to victory but Son Heung-min (£10.6m) extended his run without a blank to six matches, assisting Davinson Sanchez (£4.5m) from a free-kick.

Despite a fairly flat display, there were still encouraging signs for owners of the Korean and Harry Kane (£12.2m), who racked up a combined 24 penalty box touches and 10 shots; only a flying Daniel Bachmann (£4.2m) save denied Son, who also backheeled wide, while Kane whistled one of his six attempts narrowly off-target.

Emerson Royal (£4.9m) has registered more final-third touches and chances created than any other player in Gameweek 21 so far but despite those numbers, the Brazilian was frustratingly wasteful.

MORE OF THE SAME FROM WEST HAM

Electric going forward, suspect at the back: it was business as usual for West Ham in their first Double Gameweek 21 fixture.

Palace didn’t spoil the Hammers’ clean sheet till late but they ought to have been on the scoresheet long before that, twice hitting the woodwork and wasting numerous half-chances as the visitors’ mostly second-string backline creaked.

Ben Johnson (£4.0m) was hooked at the break after being booked shortly before the interval.

The Hammers have kept just one clean sheet in their last 11 matches and have allowed more shots on target than any other club from Gameweek 10 onwards.

Going forward, Michail Antonio (£7.8m), Jarrod Bowen (£6.6m) and – in his last appearance before departing for Cameroon – Said Benrahma (£5.9m) all delivered returns but it was Manuel Lanzini (£5.8m), now very much on penalties whenever veteran benchwarmer Mark Noble (£4.4m) isn’t on the field, who outscored them all.

His two goals came from his only two shots of the match, however, and he averages an effort only once every 83.9 minutes across the whole of 2021/22.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS FOR OLISE

It wasn’t just the excellent assist for Odsonne Edouard (£6.4m) or the fortuitous free-kick goal that brought Michael Olise (£5.4m) to our attention.

The winger will now benefit from the absences of Jordan Ayew (£5.8m) and Zaha over the next two Gameweeks, with that first-choice pair now off to the Africa Cup of Nations.

On a share of set plays, Olise has the best minutes-per-chance-created average (45) of any Palace player this season.

While not someone you’d likely target with free transfers given the short-term nature of his appeal, he’s a possible fifth midfielder option on a Free Hit if a Double Gameweek 22 does materialise for the Eagles – as seems very possible.

FORM FPL PLAYERS MAINTAIN PURPLE PATCHES AT THE EMIRATES

Pep Guardiola admitted that Arsenal were the “better” side in Manchester City’s 2-1 win at the Emirates, with the resurgent Gunners putting in an excellent display.

Some of FPL’s form players kept up their purple patches: Bukayo Saka (£6.3m) and Aymeric Laporte (£5.6m) now haven’t blanked in five and six matches respectively, while Kieran Tierney (£4.9m) has registered a whopping 50 points over his last half-dozen run-outs.

Gabriel Martinelli (£5.4m) blanked for the second match in a row but the budget midfielder continues to get into some really promising positions, going agonisingly close with one effort and then contriving to hit the post with the goal gaping.

Five of Arsenal’s seven attempts on Saturday came from the Brazilian:

RED FLAGS ARE FOR THE NEXT GAMEWEEK, PEOPLE…
Foden and Gallagher uncertainty as Ranieri explains early Dennis substitution 4

….we can’t stress that enough.

If you’ve seen a red flag appearing on Mohamed Salah (£12.9m) – or one of 27 other players – in the last few hours, don’t worry, it doesn’t mean that he’s going to miss the Chelsea game on Sunday.

Flags in FPL are (meant to be) for the next Gameweek, so with Premier League players heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations after the New Year’s round of matches is over, the unavailability, in this case, means for Gameweek 22 and beyond.

The result was not good, but the logic was correct

Kane could have had a hatty today.

Toney might score, but Kane gave you 5 good chances to score.

I went Ronaldo for Toney, I might be suffering on Monday with intense regrets

Happy to see that Dennis should be fine, then. Saved for future matches due to fatigue, I guess

Thinking of Coufal to Robbo and skipping the hit for Ronaldo, as I have no striker to sell atm. Doesn't feel smart to lose Antonio vs Leeds for -4, just for a DGW

Would you go Antonio to Ronaldo for -4, if you could?

Honestly its way too early to be thinking about this. Its possible half of your players dont even get DGWs and even then postponements could ruin you. Theres 2 weeks until the next deadline

Assume the DGWs come through. Not making any transfers until close to the deadline (Robbo's price is locked, Antonio and Coufal will rise, no rush)

Would you switch Antonio (SGW, Leeds) to Ronaldo (DGW, Villa + 1) for -4?

I would want Ronaldo, no question but as you say, doesn't make sense losing Mickey. Also the hit makes it harder to profit from your BB. Hammers don't look like they have CS in them so the Coufal move makes perfect sense.

I don't have much else to do with my brain cells atm. Medical doctor studying programming with no job atm. Lots of free time, and I enjoy planning everything, not just FPL, adapting multiple plans by the minute

Also, I have to go hard against that "waste of brain cells" point. Here's a shortlist of the possible psychosocial benefits of this post and subsequent conversations:

          1. A calm conversation with no hurled insults helps build social bonds and create good impressions for future interactions
          2. Exercising logic via planning keeps the brain active and provides one of the best boredom killers, even if those plans always change
          3. Discussing a favourite game with other enthusiasts who are awake all over the world helps this insomniac wait for sleep
          4. In this chaotic period in FPL, knowing the best options *before* the 30-minute pre-deadline moves helps avoid panic-fuelled decisions

Provisional planning, is all. It's how I had different options ready for the late announcements on WC21, leaving this amount in the bank on a WC

Got a useful angle from Major League Shocker that I hadn't thought of beforehand. That's the point of the post... Gathering opinions

            Not making an immediate transfer

It is absolutely pointless planning now to buy and sell players when we have a double game week just started, a full FA Cup schedule, a double game week that hasn't been announced, Covid, injuries, loss of form, transfer window open ... it's simply a pointless task to plan anything until FA Cup games are completed and we know the GW22 fixtures ... imho 🙂

It's not pointless if there are multiple options. I'll adapt to what changes

I'm asking for opinions on one option, not making an immediate transfer

I'll leave you to it now

of course it pointless if there are multiple options and you don’t even know if the players will be playing or the teams will be playing or the who the opposition will be

I get your point, planning is good (you can plan to remove single game week players) and I do it too, but planning now is pointless because there are too many variables and you aren’t going to make a move until the variables are reduced and you can make better judgements … wait until the variables are reduced then planning becomes relevant, until then it’s just playing with the fairies

You're missing this point: gathering opinions for one of my options

I'll make my decision 30 minutes pre-deadline, using all data available by then

Will I be guaranteed to get the posters who replied in tonight's dead zone to reply when pages are flying close to the deadline?

The result of my posting is this: if Ronaldo gets Brentford, I'll tilt towards taking the hit. If not, or if anything else happens, I'd just go Robbo

That point has calmed me on that plan's trajectory. I now have a clear indicator to wait for, which will be available 30 minutes pre-deadline, when I'll make my move

he may not get Brentford, he may be injured, have Covid, he could be sold by the next GW, Man U or their opposition may have their games cancelled … but it’s nice to know if none of any of that happens then buying him in a double gw at the expense of a single game week player is not a bad idea … it doesn’t need planning and wider advice from the community to work that one out, or it shouldn’t really 😉

i have no idea, Leeds form may be better by then, Ronaldo’s form may be worse and he could be subject of rotation or early subbing, there may be other options from players that may have better form, Leeds and/or Man U may or may not still be in the FA Cup and there may be alternative transfers that could be better suited to my squad and long term plans - still too many variables to make a reasoned decision now against other options.

I think its perfectly reasonable to explore plans now, based on various scenarios that may or may not pan out.

As long as its done on the basis that all plans may have to be shelved depending on changes.

Even in a normal season, I discuss multiple moves every week, before deciding on a route forward nearer to deadline. For me, that's part of the fun.

I get why its annoying that people make early changes and drive price increases and decreases.

This is a fantasy football forum though, and the comments section is often more informative than the articles, so I'd hate to see anything dilute that.

Personally, I'd much rather see people discussing transfer strategy than trolling each other about vaccines and identity politics, which I've seen far too much of recently on here.

I think if we start criticising people

I was hovering around 650k for 4 GWs before GW18, when chaos took full effect

Planning is my route through chaos. With 4 captaincy blanks in a row before Bowen today, I'm at 320k now, and hope to go higher with BB22 after WC21, planning with the available data

I'll keep planning, regardless of the attitude towards it from others. 4 provisional plans, adapting by the day. I might go TC/FH instead of BB, or chipless. I might get Salah back earlier than planned. The league might be paused. Something might happen to me and I'd stop playing. Anything can happen, and I'm ready to adapt while knowing the available options beforehand

Some plans have dicey choices, like this Ronaldo hit. Some don't even consider Ronaldo, but Mahrez in GW25 with the funds instead. But for the Antonio to Ronaldo (-4) option, I'd like a few opinions and some fresh angles, like the one I got today

              Nothing is concrete

True, would probably never play him but handy having a second playing keeper to cover for potential postponements, even if it is a likely 1-2 pointer.

Yeah. Horrible form and Foster took over under Ranieri, IIRC

With the way he's playing now, I guess he keeps the gloves for now

I think Foster was already number 1 when Ranieri came in, so it might not have been Ranieri's decision if that makes sense.

Ah yeah... So I didn't recall correctly

It's all condensed into one short period in my memory now... But yeah, Foster didn't give any reason to be dropped before his injury. He helped them get close to winning some games, although the defence ahead of him always found a way to spoil that

So for DGW 22, players from which teams should we be targeting?

Exclude the likes of Norwich, Newcastle and Brighton, who even with DGW are unlikely to be popular. Also Man City, who won't have a double? Same for West Ham?

So what teams worth looking at?

    1. Ze_Austin

My squad above, then add Man U, Raphinha and maybe Palace attack (no striker spot for them though, so it's Olise)

I wouldn't touch Lamptey and co. They're likely to concede in both matches. Palace should score, and their other game is Chelsea, Spurs or Man U

Ederson became the top scoring GK, which is all that matters to many casuals.

Because he plays for the best team in the league with 1 of the best defences and has outscored most the city mids. I think he was in top 10 highest scoring players last season. He's nailed and a guaranteed way into city's points.

He makes a lot of sense. Beats Man City rotation.

Salah cash to splash. Premiums spluttering earlier on besides Salah.

Match him with Cancelo and 1 Man City midfielder.

Gets away with lunging, last ditch tackles.

Could have saved the penalty anyway!

5.33 points per game since I bought him in GW 16. I normally turn my nose up at premium GKs, but they're underrated in seasons where the next Martinez/Meslier don't emerge. Sa's been surprisingly solid, but Ederson's solidity is more sustainable.

I think it's because they have only NEW and bur to reschedule, and neither those teams nor Everton are in Europe.

So far the league seems in no rush to reschedule such fixtures, otherwise we likely would have got fixtures like AVL-BUR and WAT-CRY in GW21.

"Deadlines are subject to change and will be 90 minutes before the kick-off time in the first match of the Gameweek."

            https://fantasy.premierleague.com/help/rules

For further context: the Gameweeks are set by EPL, not FPL. For as long as I can recall, and also logically, rescheduled matches come into the already set GW and can extend them close to the next deadline, but never change the actual deadlines. If a match is rescheduled to GW23 weekend, it joins GW23. If it's the Thursday before, it joins GW22

This might again have something to do with coding, where FPL always takes the lazier route

Go Salah to son next gw or tap into Spurs defence? Best Spurs defender in your opinion? Thanks

Yeah you'll need to lose Salah as he's gone after this gw and is too much money to have on the bench for multiple weeks. Son is the best option from Spurs and a good replacement for Mo.

Best defender at Spurs? Reguilon still, but Dier and Sanchez are also good options for less money

I have Royal, but that's because I wanted to leave funds for a possible Ronaldo move

      I trust Reguilón more

I think it's both: Son and Reguilón or Royal. CBs don't offer much, tbh. That Sánchez header was their first set-piece goal this season, iirc. Maybe Davies if you're cash-strapped

Son is more explosive plus has high ownership so I’d prioritize him over a defender.

As far as their defense goes, Reg and Royal play high up the pitch and have regular involvement in the final third. Dier/Davies/Sanchez cheaper but less offensively involved aside from set pieces. Probably depends on your budget and team set up.

Reg is now 5.4 and I suspect Sess may push him him for pitch time? Royal is 4.9 and offers pretty good bang for buck. Look at his crosses/chances/touches in final third. Although he needs work on the final ball for sure. I would lean him over Reg with that .5 difference. He rotates rather well with Tierney thru 28/29 ish. GL

Thanks all for the replies! Yeah probably will move for son.. just thinking which one (son or defence) first..

Salah + Coufal/Williams to Son + Robbo, if you can somehow afford it. Reguilon if you can't

Wouldn't be in a rush to sell Dias because of that run after GW22

  19. NABIL - FPL otai

We need to have strategy or plans. We need to have options. But at the same time we need to be flexible. We need to adapt, and adopt.

It's like playing chess. That's why Magnus is playing FPL. That's why he had Mahrez and Laporte that GW when some of us had Dias and Bilva. That's why he went Gray (-4) previous GW, although Everton blanked (which is beyond his control) now Everton is having DGW and possibly another DGW next. So it was a result from a careful planning and sound strategy, despite all the uncontrollable variables.

I understand if people need to have a plan regarding Antonio (sell/keep) and Ronaldo (buy but for whom). Planning makes FPL a fun game. Having said all that, I PLAN to sell Antonio (my other 2 strikers are King and Wood, likely DGWers) for Ronaldo for a hit, due to FOMO (EO) and damage limitation (despite the threat of being rested), and fund that move by selling Salah for Gray/Maddison/any other potential DGWer. I try not to take -8 again, if everything goes to PLAN.

That's all from me. Good luck and adios.

I dunno hey...you might be giving Magnus to much credit. Personally think he wasted his FH just to keep Salah(who then scored 0 as his captain). Btw the only reason he had Mahrez and Laporte was because of his fh.

Then he took a -4, an now a -8. Personally I think he is just having some fun. Rest of us are overthinking.

He has taken 5 transfers in the two weeks since he made those moves on a FH (that is why he had them because it was a one week punt, in his actual team he has Cancelo & Sterling) and dropped from 19k to 73k … not much planning in evidence and seems as if his mind is elsewhere at the moment

AFCON players being red flagged means they will not drop in price. Therefore, I can't get them back into my team. Of course, I have to find a way to buy Salah, but I will be priced out of the others

Asked how to get the best of Chelsea’s £97.5million signing from Inter Milan, the German said: “Training, training, playing. Training, playing, training, sleeping, eating good, training, playing, sleeping, eating good, drink a lot of water, sleep, train and don’t give interviews.”

there is a chance I suppose if there is another batch of Covid cases that shows it maybe be spreading and incubating in the squad (doesn’t show in terms for 5 or so days after infection) and a risk to others by playing the game.

    Need some advice.

I have been stuck in the 10k to 31k range since GW 9.

Some weeks I fall drastically then claw my way back in the coming GWs.

GW 20 was the most recent disaster. I am back to 31k.

I have been in a rut with the purchase of Gundogan and Alonso for Foden and Chilwell. I also picked Rashford over Ronaldo, which didn't work out.

Is this unproductive phase mainly because I am trying to do too much or is it just bad luck?
What should I do from here?

    Thanks.

Mostly bad luck esp with the Covid situation decimating our teams last 2-3 weeks when we had the players to prosper.

Gundog and Alonso weren't bad picks necessarily. CHS lost Kante and Gundog missed the off game or two.

Rashford is someone I wouldn't have picked personally.

Hey, you are obviously a very good player and are in pole position to prosper with the remaining chips. Good luck! 🙂
