FPL Double Gameweek 21 round-up: Sunday review, injury news and the things we learned

Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from Sunday’s Double Gameweek 21 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles will take the place of the usual Scout Notes over the winter period.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

Fit-again Watkins can return to 2020/21 form in Villa's new-look 3-5-2 formation

Alisson (£6.0m), Joel Matip (£4.9m) and Roberto Firmino (£8.7m) were ruled out of Liverpool’s clash at Chelsea on Sunday after returning suspected positive tests for Covid-19.

As a result, the trio are now isolating.

A statement from the club prior to kick-off confirmed that all other members of the Reds’ playing squad have subsequently been tested and received negative results.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard declined to state the specific reason for Ollie Watkins’ (£7.8m) absence, but did confirm his squad are suffering with Covid and injury problems.

However, he did go on to say he is expecting him back against Manchester United, along with Tyrone Mings (£5.0m), who missed Double Gameweek 21 through suspension.

“I’m not sure I’m in the position to give you the details on it but we have got a mixture of Covid and injury problems at the moment. Ollie (Watkins) should be back for the next game.”

Brentford, meanwhile, had to contend with more injury issues, with Bryan Mbeumo (£5.3m) absent with a calf injury, and Mathias Jensen (£4.9m) and Sergi Canos (£5.5m) picking up knocks during the match.

“It’s a hip for Mathias (Jensen), and for Sergi (Canos) it’s a hamstring. I hope neither are major.” – Thomas Frank

On the suspension front, Aston Villa’s John McGinn (£5.8m), plus Leeds United duo Diego Llorente (£4.5m) and Tyler Roberts (£4.8m), will miss Gameweek 22 after receiving their fifth yellow cards of the campaign on Sunday.

GAMEWEEK 21 TAKEAWAYS

LUKAKU DROPPED AFTER INTERVIEW “BRINGS NOISE THAT WE DON’T NEED”

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel dropped Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) from his matchday squad in Double Gameweek 21, after the Belgian said in an interview that he was “not happy” with his role at Stamford Bridge, adding that he would like to return to Inter Milan in the future.

Discussing his decision, Tuchel said:

“I decided to protect the preparation of the match and that’s why he’s out. Of course, we have spoken, twice. I have spoken to the main players, then we had to realise it is too close to the match. The thing got too big, the thing got too noisy, so close to the match. We delayed the decision and while we are doing that we have to protect the preparation of the match. We have a big match of football to play. We need full focus which is hard enough to get without this decision, but that is why he is not playing. For sure it was a difficult decision to take.”

Further comments then emerged after full-time:

“He is our player, there is always a way back, we will clear this behind closed doors and once we have made a decision and Romelu (Lukaku) knows, you will maybe know also. It is not to be discussed now.”

SALAH AND MANE SET TO DEPART FOR AFCON

In a breathless Stamford Bridge encounter, Mohamed Salah (£12.9m) and Sadio Mane (£11.8m) were both on the scoresheet ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) departures. Both players are now set to fly out and join up with their respective teams for the tournament, with Naby Keita (£5.0m) also poised to turn out for Guinea, and are expected to return for Gameweek 24.

The absence of Salah in particular is a real blow for FPL managers. However, it does open up a free Liverpool slot alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.3m) and Diogo Jota (£8.2m), who are owned by 96.92% and 85.45% respectively in the top 10k.

That heightens the appeal of a short-term move for Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), who has now completed his three-match suspension. Notably, the Scottish international had produced a goal and four assists in his six appearances prior to his ban, averaging over seven points per match during that time.

Liverpool now face domestic cup ties against Arsenal (x2) and Shrewsbury Town, before they are back in Premier League action against Brentford at Anfield, with a second match possibly to be added as part of a Double Gameweek.

CALVERT-LEWIN FRUSTRATES

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m) frustrated his new owners on Sunday after failing to convert his first-half penalty at Goodison Park. The England international, subject to 135,378 transfers in ahead of Double Gameweek 21, certainly had his chances, ending the match with four shots in the box and six penalty area touches.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s xG shot map v Brighton and Hove Albion in Double Gameweek 21

However, all hope isn’t lost, as he should at least be handed another opportunity to impress next week, when Everton take on Leicester City in the second-part of their double-header.

“That was not the idea… it was maybe too demanding for him but we were losing and had to do it. Obviously, we didn’t want to keep him on the pitch as we felt, physically, he wouldn’t have the match fitness. Maybe he has the strength but not the stamina. But at least he’s fine and, hopefully, he can recover quickly for the next one.” – Rafa Benitez on his decision to use Calvert-Lewin from start to finish

BURNLEY FORM A WORRY

After today’s 3-1 loss at Elland Road, Burnley remain in the bottom three and have not won since October. It’s also worth noting that their away form is particularly bad, having failed to win a single game in 10 Premier League attempts this term, conceding 19 goals in the process.

It won’t get any easier for them, too, as their next four league games are against Leicester City, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool.

They will also be without goalscorer Maxwel Cornet (£5.9m) for a period, who is now set to link up with Ivory Coast for AFCON.

UNDERWHELMING START TO DOUBLE GAMEWEEK 21

After West Ham United lost their clean sheet late on at Selhurst Park on Saturday, it was another underwhelming day for FPL managers who had invested heavily in Double Gameweek 21.

Brentford and Everton both lost their clean sheets early on, and whilst they did score four goals between them, the likes of Ivan Toney (£6.6m), Demarai Gray (£5.5m) and of course Calvert-Lewin, failed to get in on the act.

Instead, it was budget options Mads Roerslev (£4.3m) and Anthony Gordon (£4.5m) who were the unlikely Double Gameweek heroes, at least for now, as they both delivered double-digit hauls.

If gw22 is a mammoth DGW, is anyone considering using their second FH chip? I kind of want to.

if it's a big DGW then you should already have 8/9 Dgws without having to use the chip; rather save it

Just seen it's potentially all but WHU, City. In which case, I'd defo not use FH. I'm looking at Kane and Saka/Maddison as potential picks.

Haha, everyone will tell you wait for more information which is correct but no harm in starting to formulate some rough plans if you're happy to change them later with more info. I've been planning to BB but not too sure if it's worth it now with 1 FT and probable 3 SGW players (Bowen, Antonio, Cancelo), 1 Blank (salah) and 2 questionable picks (sissoko and tomiyasu). Could probably make a really nice team with a -12 but that will just cut into my BB score so not sure right now. Plus of course there's a risk of postponements due to covid

I would recommend having a couple of plans before each gameweek so that you don’t have to panic and think up of something with 15 minutes before the deadline.

I’m currently planning on FH in DGW22 (and have been for the last couple of weeks).

          Yup definitely.

Strangely, I've unconsciously been planning for a BB22 since I've now got potentially 2 playing DGW GKs in Ramsdale & DDG.

I too have 3 SGW players in Bowen, Bilva and Cancelo. Bowen has Leeds so happy to keep. I think getting Bilva out and a questionable one in Gelhardt would set me up nicely, provided everyone else has a DGW...

If he was banging headers in, yes

Sadly, his only route to points this season is clean sheets, and Man U can be pretty unpredictable with those. Villa and either of their two possible DGW opponents can quite probably score, completely evaporating his appeal

Raphinha blank in a 3-1 win is unexpected, but a lot of unexpected stuff happened yesterday. Such a long list of unexpected stuff...

I'm glad the Chelsea vs Liverpool damage was restricted to single digits for template picks there. The match could have gone either way, yet ended up with shared spoils. Not nice as a Pool fan, but nice for FPL. Points for all, but not too much damage against others

Looking forward to (C) TAA for the double though

For the record - I know this is rather insignificant - Gelhardt has 3 returns in his last 4: Chelsea, City, Arsenal and Burnley

I did almost the same, and while i am down on this now i still think moving put Alonso was the right move, Chelsea are now regressing to the mean, defenive wise, and some blanks and if a double its not great with City as one.
Brighton is not a clinical side, but decided yesterday that they suddenly were, i count that as anomaly, usually you target teams def Vs Brighton cause they normally struggles to score. West ham def was all about the Norwich game. Palace also not high scoring team usually.

Chelsea fixtures were not good and two blanks coming up so selling Alonso to get two games from Keane seemed sensible

It was two transfers for -4 that included Gallagher to Doucoure so 4 games (hopefully) compared to just one from Alonso.

I am happy holding the Everton players as rotation choices - basically Keane Doucoure Livra Mitchell & Broja covering 2 places in my 11 plus the bench

You got the wrong end of the stick. If you check his history with the national team, it's him who's the trouble-maker. Refused to play for the previous coach and CBA now. This nonsense about a missed email is an attempt to blame the Nigerian Association who did nothing wrong.

Anyway, as a Dennis owner, I'm happy to accept his manager saying he had a minor niggle and look forward to him facing a pair of rotten defences soon.

City and West Ham only teams who are likely to have single game. West Ham’s is Leeds so still a decent option, but I don’t think you’ll want 4 sgw players.

Benching Salah in the past has worked out well for them.

He's coming straight back into the team unless he is the one that wants the rest, which i doubt.

Klopp is going to put him straight back in. They don't want to do anything to make him unhappy while trying to sign him to a new contract.

Just watched the CHS/LIV game. What's your impression on the Mane red card incident in the first minute?

All the pundits and VAR determined that it not a red. But every time I look at it, I see a swinging left arm into Azpi's face.

True, Mane may not be looking at Azpi (suggesting it was not pre-medicated) but did you notice how his right arm remains by his side without no swinging motion but his left arm does the opposite?

    1. Walter White (WW)
      • 2 Years

      Yellow card imo.

Of all the games this weekend, it’s the Arsenal pen that wasn’t allowed & the City pen that was given which baffles me

      1. Jafalad
        • 14 Years

Thought the CTY pen was about right imo. After seeing the replay Xhaka clearly grabs Bilva's shirt and his left leg blocks him off.

True, Bilva made a meal of it which made matters much worse. It's a blight in the game with players trying to win pens and free kicks by diving and feigning injury.

Mane would still have been aware of Azpi's presence and aware he was jumping with him for the ball. Just because he is not looking at Azpi, shouldn't necessarily rule out a red card.

I think it's a red. Maybe it's not given because it's 10 seconds into the game but IMO red should be a red, no matter how much time there is remaining.

Incidents like that have been worthy of red before so they should decide whether they are or not. But it's stupid to give red to someone and yellow for someone else for the same kind of incident.

It was pretty silly that VAR reviewed the Mount -incident for a red card but not this one.

It doesn’t look like a natural arm movement when jumping for the ball to me. Mané got very lucky.

It could be a red or a yellow, depending on the VAR's instructions. Unfortunately this wasnt their biggest mistake, Arsenal should have a clear penalty whereas MCI got a penalty which in my opinion was not even 50-50, and Spurs second consecutive week have two clear penalties denied. I expect today MUN to get sth as well. VAR just took the responsibility off the referee but again certain teams get help.

Biggest mistake was chelsea v brighton:

        https://twitter.com/i/status/1476499104494673933

It's laughable. Didn't go to VAR for review. I mean that's a penalty every day of the week and only a fool would argue otherwise.

The officiating has been inexcusably dreadful in the last month or two. I actually thought it was pretty good in the first third of the season (with exceptions)

          • 11 Years

Exactly my point, this is a penalty that when given, the defending team should place the ball to the spot themselves, without any word. Human mistakes can happen but these decisions are not human mistakes. And problem is that there is consistency in those human mistakes, I m surprised the teams' boards don't take any action.

Your wrong ref got all the big calls in that game correct, Odegard ran into Ederson and Xhaka clearly pulled SIlva so that's a pen. No conspiracies, just decisions you dint like I'd guess

I just watched the highlights again to be sure. Sorry mate but i strongly disagree. Ederson doesnt touch the ball at all its a clear penalty. Bilva starts falling before Xhaka grabs his shirt. Spurs fan so trust me, I have no Arsenal love and didnt support any team in this game but I m trying to watch the games as objectively as I can. Those two incidents were very clear to me in the VAR area, maybe not easy for the referee to decide.

    Thinking ahead.

I know City doesn't have a DGW but how do these transfers look?

    James+Salah to Robertson+KdB (-4)?

Don't want to spread the Salah cash too much and KdB could do well in the short term.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks.

Can someone explain the assist rule for crosses? I take it if a goalie punches a cross and then a goal is scored it's still an assist? Thought this may not have been the case in the past?

Alonso's shot was on target (I think) therefore it was a save.

It has to be a shot on target, I think

        I'm thinking more about Jota

Jota’s pass was meant for mane, because it found it’s way to him despite the touch by chalobah, they counted it

That is pretty dodgy to be fair. With corners then, if any opposing player gets a slight touch, and then headed in by someone on the back post say, I'd take that as not the intended target. Or do corener takers usually get assists in these cases?

With a pass or cross it still counts if it reaches the perceived intended target (despite a touch from opposition). Any shot that is saved or blocked and then scored by someone else counts as an assist. They saw alonso’s as a shot.

It depends on the ownership of the player in question. Anything above 20% is given.

Well the Jota one was baffling.
