FPL Double Gameweek 21 round-up: Sunday review, injury news and the things we learned

Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from Sunday’s Double Gameweek 21 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles will take the place of the usual Scout Notes over the winter period.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

INJURIES AND BANS

Fit-again Watkins can return to 2020/21 form in Villa's new-look 3-5-2 formation

Alisson (£6.0m), Joel Matip (£4.9m) and Roberto Firmino (£8.7m) were ruled out of Liverpool’s clash at Chelsea on Sunday after returning suspected positive tests for Covid-19.

As a result, the trio are now isolating.

A statement from the club prior to kick-off confirmed that all other members of the Reds’ playing squad have subsequently been tested and received negative results.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard declined to state the specific reason for Ollie Watkins’ (£7.8m) absence, but did confirm his squad are suffering with Covid and injury problems.

However, he did go on to say he is expecting him back against Manchester United, along with Tyrone Mings (£5.0m), who missed Double Gameweek 21 through suspension.

“I’m not sure I’m in the position to give you the details on it but we have got a mixture of Covid and injury problems at the moment. Ollie (Watkins) should be back for the next game.”

Brentford, meanwhile, had to contend with more injury issues, with Bryan Mbeumo (£5.3m) absent with a calf injury, and Mathias Jensen (£4.9m) and Sergi Canos (£5.5m) picking up knocks during the match.

“It’s a hip for Mathias (Jensen), and for Sergi (Canos) it’s a hamstring. I hope neither are major.” – Thomas Frank

On the suspension front, Aston Villa’s John McGinn (£5.8m), plus Leeds United duo Diego Llorente (£4.5m) and Tyler Roberts (£4.8m), will miss Gameweek 22 after receiving their fifth yellow cards of the campaign on Sunday.

GAMEWEEK 21 TAKEAWAYS

LUKAKU DROPPED AFTER INTERVIEW “BRINGS NOISE THAT WE DON’T NEED”

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel dropped Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) from his matchday squad in Double Gameweek 21, after the Belgian said in an interview that he was “not happy” with his role at Stamford Bridge, adding that he would like to return to Inter Milan in the future.

Discussing his decision, Tuchel said:

“I decided to protect the preparation of the match and that’s why he’s out. Of course, we have spoken, twice. I have spoken to the main players, then we had to realise it is too close to the match. The thing got too big, the thing got too noisy, so close to the match. We delayed the decision and while we are doing that we have to protect the preparation of the match. We have a big match of football to play. We need full focus which is hard enough to get without this decision, but that is why he is not playing. For sure it was a difficult decision to take.”

Further comments then emerged after full-time:

“He is our player, there is always a way back, we will clear this behind closed doors and once we have made a decision and Romelu (Lukaku) knows, you will maybe know also. It is not to be discussed now.”

SALAH AND MANE SET TO DEPART FOR AFCON

In a breathless Stamford Bridge encounter, Mohamed Salah (£12.9m) and Sadio Mane (£11.8m) were both on the scoresheet ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) departures. Both players are now set to fly out and join up with their respective teams for the tournament, with Naby Keita (£5.0m) also poised to turn out for Guinea, and are expected to return for Gameweek 24.

The absence of Salah in particular is a real blow for FPL managers. However, it does open up a free Liverpool slot alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.3m) and Diogo Jota (£8.2m), who are owned by 96.92% and 85.45% respectively in the top 10k.

That heightens the appeal of a short-term move for Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), who has now completed his three-match suspension. Notably, the Scottish international had produced a goal and four assists in his six appearances prior to his ban, averaging over seven points per match during that time.

Liverpool now face domestic cup ties against Arsenal (x2) and Shrewsbury Town, before they are back in Premier League action against Brentford at Anfield, with a second match possibly to be added as part of a Double Gameweek.

CALVERT-LEWIN FRUSTRATES

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m) frustrated his new owners on Sunday after failing to convert his first-half penalty at Goodison Park. The England international, subject to 135,378 transfers in ahead of Double Gameweek 21, certainly had his chances, ending the match with four shots in the box and six penalty area touches.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s xG shot map v Brighton and Hove Albion in Double Gameweek 21

However, all hope isn’t lost, as he should at least be handed another opportunity to impress next week, when Everton take on Leicester City in the second-part of their double-header.

“That was not the idea… it was maybe too demanding for him but we were losing and had to do it. Obviously, we didn’t want to keep him on the pitch as we felt, physically, he wouldn’t have the match fitness. Maybe he has the strength but not the stamina. But at least he’s fine and, hopefully, he can recover quickly for the next one.” – Rafa Benitez on his decision to use Calvert-Lewin from start to finish

BURNLEY FORM A WORRY

After today’s 3-1 loss at Elland Road, Burnley remain in the bottom three and have not won since October. It’s also worth noting that their away form is particularly bad, having failed to win a single game in 10 Premier League attempts this term, conceding 19 goals in the process.

It won’t get any easier for them, too, as their next four league games are against Leicester City, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool.

They will also be without goalscorer Maxwel Cornet (£5.9m) for a period, who is now set to link up with Ivory Coast for AFCON.

UNDERWHELMING START TO DOUBLE GAMEWEEK 21

After West Ham United lost their clean sheet late on at Selhurst Park on Saturday, it was another underwhelming day for FPL managers who had invested heavily in Double Gameweek 21.

Brentford and Everton both lost their clean sheets early on, and whilst they did score four goals between them, the likes of Ivan Toney (£6.6m), Demarai Gray (£5.5m) and of course Calvert-Lewin, failed to get in on the act.

Instead, it was budget options Mads Roerslev (£4.3m) and Anthony Gordon (£4.5m) who were the unlikely Double Gameweek heroes, at least for now, as they both delivered double-digit hauls.

With 2 FT, am I likely to get a decent DGW team out without using free hit? I overslept the last deadline, hence I do not have any West Ham.

    De Gea (non playing 4.0)

    Alonso - TAA - Cancelo - Livra - White

    Jota - Son - Foden - Bernardo - Raphinha

    Ronaldo - King - Broja

Yes, city won’t double so ditch one of your mids for a decent double player once announced. Maybe livra for a defender too.

No use free hitting that team IMO unless we get some real curve balls. Do nothing till their announced though

Yeah, sounds reasonable. Hoping to make something out of the two freebies. Maybe something like Bernardo and Livra to Maddison and Semedo.

I'm a pool fan but that was an unholy mess yesterday. I really think we need to stop throwing around terms like 'thriller' and 'classic' with games like this and call them for what they are and thats entertaining yes but entertaining in a way a particularly action heavy poorly plotted Fast and the Furious film is. Most of that was garbage yesterday. heavy touches. mislaid passes, people dribbling then just running into players and either forgetting the ball or losing it. (Mane im looking at you). Two teams that werent even pressing close to the best of their abilities yet couldnt keep the ball for more than 5 or 6 seconds of play. Defenders not even attempting to tackle or play a high line in unison with their fellow defenders.

Yes every now and again moments of brilliance popped up because these are highly paid world class professional footballers after all but I think there is definitely something to the notion that the product is being diluted by the schedule/ covid. there has to be a reason why it was so poor. Liverpool went two nil up and made zero attempt to see out the rest of the half but it was uncontrolled and mindless. there were gaps everywhere and it was obvious it wasnt sustainable yet still they persisted with the 'heavy metal' style that in this instance was just as harmful as it was good.

Sorry but I disagree on most of the things u said.

Liverpool could have easily won the game 6-3 or something, Mendy was just having a blinder.

The heavy metal style is the main reason why liverpool won title after how many years and CL too. I feel liverpool is lacking on squad depth though, need a clinical finisher and perhaps a decent replacement like Raphinha for Mane who is underperforming for a while now.

Don't quite agree the heavy metal style is the reason they won the title in 19/20. More than that I think they were superb defensively back then and that's what they lack this season.

Yesterday it wasn't their best performance, they were outclassed in the midfield, but that's no wonder given they fielded 60-year-old Milner and Hendo. According to xG that was a pretty even game, and watching the game I had the same feeling. But Chelsea is far from the best form, in my opinion 19/20 Liverpool would have won the game comfortably.

its not just about attack chief, their has to be structure. at two nil up there has to be a change in mindset. we couldnt keep possession. it was shambolic. it was error strewn everywhere on the pitch so yes mane and mo could have scored (i did point out that there were moments of brilliance from world class players, including mendy) but chelsea would most likely have still come back into the game with all the gaps we were leaving . if we had won 6-3 id still acknowledge that wasnt good enough in terms of being title contenders. and it wasnt just heavy metal geggenpressen in the title win, there were other aspects that came to the fore that just werent their last night , one of them being a fully fit virgil who could control a game from the back. but he is just not at it right now.

Ok that was a nice save, but Chelsea had its oppurtunities too. You could say that if Chalobah hasn't slipped maybe Chelsea had won that and you could go on and on like that.

Chelsea were wide open, if Liverpool had someone who could play a through ball, they would have scored 6. Jota’s passing was horrendous.

Fellow fan here and I agree with you. It was the same lack of control against Spurs. But for Alisson they would have conceded 6+ goals and Spurs are a poor attacking side! The only thing I can say in our defence was that we were under strength.

Why did we allow Chelsea to dominate posession so much yesterday? Pathetic. A team like Liverpool shouldn't be allowing this to happen.

Sadly there are too many of our star performers from our title winning season not performing at the same level. Only Alisson, Trent and Salah still are.

Milner is a liability and shouldn't be playing. As much as Keita still needs to prove himself, if he is fit and available, Milner should not be starting ahead of him. The selling of Gini is looking like a bad sell as we miss him.

Mane needs to be sold. He's been average for 2 seasons now. Just doesnt seem to have the pace anymore and just runs into defenders.

I was hoping that the title win was going to be the start of a period of dominance but sadly we have gone backwards. Lots of things that need addressing and we need to make some signings.

We cant compete with City's squad. When we lose a couple of key players to injury/covid, we have dross as back up players.

I dread to think how we will fair without Salah and Mane while they are at the AFCON.

Pool midfield isn't as good without Wijnaldum. He hasn't been replaced by a player nearly as good as him. Plus Chelsea are a good side. You can only see out a half of football as well as you can but also as well as the opposition allows. If they're not slowing down the play and controlling the game then look to Klopp for lack of direction.

From all this discussion, this is it. Wijnaldum. The way he mops up the balls to retain possesion, his agility, and very important, pace made him tailor made in this set up, As he protect the protecter (Fabinho) and his clever and quick passes made so many break goals. Problem with pool midfield is not lack of quality but the fact that none of the remaining players are fast and quick enough. Hendo, Fab, Milner and Thiago is excellent footballers but they are not reliant on their pace. Ox is the only one with enough pace but he us not as defensive and tactical aware as Gini. Wijnaldum was a very talented gymnast (not sure i use the right term) and you can see that when he plays.

The midfield is too old, need some new blood in there. The shame is they’d be competing more if their owners showed more ambition and spent money. Klopp has done an amazing job under frugal owners. It’s why I rate him more highly than Guardiola as he’s always been at the top dog: Barca, Bayern, City compared with Mainz, Dortmund, Liverpool.

The lack of clarity over assists in FPL has been a major annoyance for too long now, with pretty much every manager having received good and bad luck over the years. So with this in mind do you think that it’s a good part of the game, the “not knowing” if you are getting the assist, the suspense etc adds to the excitement. Or do you now think it’s time to put an almost bullet proof rule into the game regarding assists ie the 2nd last player from the goal scoring team to touch the ball gets the assist no matter how far back in the play it happened?

I think the rules are pretty clear on assists now. I don't really understand what all the fuss was about yesterday regarding assists. Often it's people who don't know what constitutes an FPL assist rather than a clearcut 'real life' assist

Yeah, I am ok with earning a PK and rebound assists. It is the "intended target" part that can get a bit hazy, imo. But how many times we get these? 2-3 per season maybe? By no means a major issue.

Would OPTA have awarded that Jota “assist” yesterday?

For the removal of perceived unfairness, I’d just go with whatever OPTA said if I were FPL.

This is so silly because if you'd read how FPL assists work, there was absolutely no question how all three assists were given.

I don't even disagree in the slightest with any of them.

I mean yes I own all three, but Alonso rooted to the bench 😉

Its part of the game and in Jotas case as it was for that Cancelo assist, the emphasis on 'intended target' is the clue here. Actually i think fpl shows good football knowledge in those cases.

Either he starts and gives you a double digit score or come off the bench for a 1-pointer

Non-Jota Liverpool attack during AFCON should be for FH22 players only, imo

I think my TV is sufficient enough now just to hold him unless he gets injured. He’s so reliable, he scored against City on the opening day more or less from one chance because his finishing is fantastic.

Three postponements in the bank as well make him an attractive proposition.

To be honest I feel DCL was a bad pick. Bringing in a player that hasn’t played a competitive game since gameweek 3 is always likely to end in tears, he was bound to be rusty

      1. Tic Tacs
        • 4 Years
        2 years, 3 months ago

In hindsight I agree, should've kept Antonio but he was also a frustrating own for many gameweeks. DCL didn't have a bad game apart from the missed pen, hopefully will repay the faith against Leicester.

The concerns around DCL was would he a) start and b) play more than 30.

He started & played 90 with the second game 9 days away so chances are he'll get 180 mins over the two games.

Now, we can't predict who will score or not but he was an inch or two away from being a decent pick for the week, those are the fine lines & thus far he has been no worse than someone fit like Watkins who many swarmed on after scoring 12 points against Norwich.

I watched the game, he didn't look rusty, he just didn't score and Everton were bad, he had something like 4 shots on goal & missed a pen, on another day it goes his way and no one talks about rust.

I think he was a very good pick to be honest. Imho Benitez hinted enough that he doesn't have enough players and will have to play DCL straight back after an injury (unless I remember something wrong). There was very little downside but enormous upside given his very low ownership and the fact that he was going to have back to back double GWs. Didn't work out, but I think it was quite a good decision.

        1. Tic Tacs
          • 4 Years

I tried to use that logic with the decision, I don't feel that missed penalties are predictable and he did have chances. I'm just getting on the end of some pretty bad luck with decisions at the moment! Seems that whether to go DCL or not is a bit of a mixed opinion judging by comments.

        Nonsense.

He had a minimal summer break after an inactive Euros. Little or no pre-season. But he still scored in each of Everton's first 3 games this season (with had excellent underlying stats).

He's fundamentally a fit, young player, has been back in full training for 3-4 weeks and has penalties as well. Anyone that picked him was unlucky, not stupid. Maybe Bubz and you should do some research rather than dismissing players based on your own assumptions.

        1. Cok3y5murf
          • 7 Years

2 of those 3 goals were penalties. Even Jorginho could've done that.

Anyone that picked him was taking a hail-mary gamble on a player who could and probably would be rusty and obviously no sign of form. Take a needless gamble, accept the consequences

Picking DCL was no better ot worse than spending 12.2m on Kane who's returns have been 2, 2, 2, 2, 6, 6, 2.

The striker are is so poor this year that its understandable why people punt, most who went back on Antonio also punted after 1 assist in plenty of weeks with little form to show for it, everyone is a bad pick when they are not scoring points and genius picks when the fine margins swing their way.

Yeah sure mate, you'd fill your team with Kante and Jack Cork types because that's how the game is played, silly comparison, be better.

So go 2 or 1 upfront. Kane being poor value does not justify picking DCL. They are unrelated.

At least we watched Antonio play! Whatever you could infer from his performance, you make a choice based on whether he looked good to you or not. DCL hadn't kicked a football since GW3 and you've not even seen him and you buy him too soon. To each his own, I guess

So how do you pick your team for GW1? Based off training games titled pre season?

As Ruth stated, he had little or no pre season & scored 3 in 3, sometimes you picked on fixture & circumstances not just form otherwise you'd never pick a player before a good run of form, you'd always pick them after it and miss out.

It's not against the rules to be proactive, you don't have to be reactive all the time.

                1. Cok3y5murf

                  2 years, 3 months ago

If I was reactive, my rank would be very bad. I picked Mahrez in GW17 when there was no mention of him here or anywhere, no prior points, and everyone went Bernardo. Hauls every week. This is not the same

                  Luckily, we're not in GW1

And as I stated, even Jorginho could've managed 2 penalties in 3 games. These two fixtures are not good fixtures. Brighton are quite solid and were favorites here. Leicester just kept a clean sheet against the best attack in the league. Good time to monitor before jumping

People picked on the assumption of 4 fixs over 2 rounds & pens count the same as normal goals, thats how Bruno scored so many points last year, its a non argument, a player that takes pens has that string to his bow, off course, it helps when they convert them.

Are you arguing there is no such thing as match fitness/sharpness? Not saying DCL is necessarily a bad pick, but assuming a player is not 100% after not playing competitive football for 3 months is hardly controversial

          1. Ruth_NZ
            • 9 Years

Agreed but he has been back in full training for 3-4 weeks and probably faces the 4 weakest defences in the PL between GW21 and GW25, in which period he'll likely have 2 doubles.

I'm not saying there weren't some reservations about jumping on early, just arguing that "poor decision-making" is an unwarranted, casual dismissal of a reasonable call that had (and still has) very good potential.

Without Salah and Mane, is it worth keeping Liverpool assets at all?

Attacking wise they'll be lacking punch. Even Trent's appeal is somewhat blunted in this respect, obviously he'll have clean sheet potential, but I would expect Liverpool to have less possession in the final third and therefore more pressure on the defence.

Are there any recent stats showing the effect of missing Salah and Mane?

Apparently it's a long time since neither played. Surely will have to adapt tactics? Front two or three from Jota, Firmino, Minamino, Origi, An Others. Fixtures not so bad so wouldn't be selling Trent, possibly could be more of an attacking threat to fill the slack.

Of the 11.4 million transfers this week that's way less than i would have thought for DCL net transfers in.

The noise on here and Twitter is a microcosm of the entire game.

"Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m) frustrated his new owners on Sunday after failing to convert his first-half penalty at Goodison Park. The England international, subject to 135,378 transfers in ahead of Double Gameweek 21, certainly had his chances, ending the match with four shots in the box and six penalty area touches."

i didn't bring him in on FH because i thought he'd be rusty and was unlikely to finish the game, the first part turned out to be true at least, but tbh i'd rather have him on 0pts with a game to go, than Kane who i didn't want to remove with his one good fixture stuck on 2pts, with no chance of more

Hi all....with what we know so far re dgw22, am I likely to be able to bb this lot?

Maybe a -8 to lose Antonio diop and foden and keep bowen and cancelo?

Would be good to get bb out of the way! Thanks

    Ddg ramsdale
    Taa cancelo alonso diop livra

Everyone gonna be asking if they should bench boost a bench of Antonio, Bowen and Cancelo soon. Anyone got the right answer?

I think if you squad is able to bb in 22 you should just get it out of the way

Players like west ham v Leeds and cancelo are worthy of the bb

That’s the plan for me. Obviously a long way to go to GW22. Actually knowing the doubles would be a start

Who do you think will take penalties for Liverpool when Salah is out and If Milner not starting? Firmino, Jota, TAA, Henderson?

Sorry but how is bench boosting the right play in this period where there are cancellations & covid isolations but wildcarding or free hitting in the same conditions is bad play?

Does no one else see the inconsistency here?

I see that Maguire out tonight and Jones in contention for first start since 2020 alongside Varane with Lindelof and Bailly also out. Not too promising for DDG clean sheet then!

    Still early doors I know but with 1FT & 7.8M ITB;

    DDG
    Trent (c), Cancelo, Johnson, Keane
    Son, Bernardo, Bowen, Gray
    Dennis, Antonio

    Steele, Mahrez, Gelhardt, Rudiger

    A) Rudiger & Mahrez > Robbo & Jota (-4)
    B) Rudiger & Mahrez > Robbo & Maddi (if fit) and bench Keane (-4)
    C) Rudiger > Robbo and bench Keane (Mahrez doesn't look like he'll lose any value any time soon so saves taking a hit, would still have 6.7M ITB)
    D) Your recommendations
