Transfers

January transfer window: What the moves mean for FPL

The winter transfer window is now open for business and we will be documenting all the Premier League ins and outs throughout January on our dedicated page, which you can also find under the ‘Team News’ tab.

Not only that but we will also be examining what the transfer activity means from a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) perspective, be it new targets or the impact on existing assets.

We’ll be listing the moves by date and by club on said page, with additional Scout Reports on the key incoming transfers.

There’s been minimal activity so far, with the exit of Ferran Torres (£6.7m) and Everton’s capture of left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko (price TBC) the main moves to date.

Budget FPL forwards Keinan Davis (£4.5m) and Aaron Connolly (£5.3m) have departed on loan, while Brentford have bolstered their goalkeeping ranks with the temporary signing of Jonas Lossl (price TBC).

VITALIY MYKOLENKO

Lucas Digne’s (£5.0m) days at Everton look numbered as the Toffees have made the first major signing of the January transfer window, bringing in left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko from Dynamo Kyiv for an undisclosed fee.

Recently we have seen Ben Godfrey (£4.8m) and Seamus Coleman (£4.9m) at left-back/wing-back after Digne incurred the wrath of boss Rafael Benitez, so those two players will return to compete for a starting role in their usual spots at centre-half and right-back respectively.

Mykolenko, 22, is a Ukraine international with 21 caps to his name despite his young age and was first choice at left-back for both club and country before his departure for Merseyside.

Also capable of playing at centre-half and further up the left flank, the versatile Mykolenko registered seven goals and 20 assists for Dynamo Kyiv in 132 appearances in all competitions.

He’s not a set-piece specialist like Digne but his crossing has been highlighted as a strength, no doubt with service to Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m) in mind.

“I like to play on the front foot and get forward when I can. Modern football demands that full-backs are able to attack as well as defend. I think I am a versatile defender who can get up and down the pitch.

“But I believe desire and commitment are the most important attributes and I will aim to bring those qualities. I hope it won’t take me too long to settle in and get used to the style of football.

“I feel great right now and it is very important for me to communicate with the team, the management and the fans. For that, I need to learn the language and understand culture of this city, this country and this club. I will do my very best.” – Vitaliy Mykolenko

With Everton keeping only one clean sheet in 12 matches, and registering only three shut-outs all season, Mykolenko is unlikely to attract much Fantasy interest initially, even if the Toffees do sit top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 22-26.

This. You need a playing 15 in the current situation. I lost Foden & Watkins this week but got 11 points off bench from Bilva and Alonso.

Apart from that there's no point in planning anything else until we know the DGW fixtures and have seen updated covid/injury news.

Little bit lost with that DGW incoming, would you just do Foster Duffy Broja -8 out, or even just Foster Duffy -4 out, and BB?

You can't make these decisions until the teams with a double (or even a game at all) are confirmed.

I would wait until you know the dgw fixtures, know if any games are cancelled, any of your players are injured, with Covid or lost form … then start to think about it 😉

If you want to BB, yes Foster Duffy out would help. Question is the replacements within those price brackets.

I have to admit that I'm often guilty of overthinking transfers and planning my next moves, often with sideways results or worse...

Not sure about you, but the last few gameweeks have almost been a welcome relief as most of my moves are almost deciding themselves a result of COVID cancellations, injuries and AFCON.

I know it's a mess fixtures wise but when we're all in the same boat it kind of evens itself out

It's a weird one, I always try play long with patience and very rarely take hits but the last 4 weeks has been all about attacking the next GW & then going from there...

Hits for players every week is fun, but only when the arrows stay green. Mightn't have enjoyed the carnage as much if Salah punished vs Leicester!

Hopefully after the next few and the little winter break, we see less some form of normality with FPL & life 🙂

Salah seems to be dropping like a stone.

I sold him for 12.7 and was thinking that his price wouldn't really drop that much.

What price do you reckon we will be able to buy him back at?

my sv has dropped to 12.6 now so at this point I guess its become irrelevant unless hes dropping to 12.4 till then ill just hold and wait for news and see who I end up going for as a replacement once doubles news comes in, if I end up FHing in 22 then I may just bench him for 23 but maybe I still sell for 23 and 24 and buy back in 25 but I think it depends a lot on how far Egypt go in Afcon and if he seems like he drops under 12.5

Hes dropping much faster than I expected though, alot of the time big hitters tend to have some price manipulation and dont drop as much as expected but Salah seems to be dropping as he shd according to normal expectation for usual price drops based off sales

I think he will drop once more this week and only once next gameweek. Then as soon as that gw23 deadline passes, net transfers in at speed.

So, 12.5 if you buy him at the start of gw24. 12.7 by the gw24 deadline

Not a priority transfer out especially with good fixtures. I'd even roll the FT first. If you have a FT to spare and know what DGW players you want I'd use him for to help restructure the team

Haven't taken a hit since GW8 and have been climbing rank. Don't be afraid to be one or two short if you won't want your transferred in player for long - will just cause you a headache to get him out again. Others are in the same boat for players missing too, and you usually won't make up 4 points from your hit in the short term of one GW

100 here but i'll never change!!

The ones earlier in the season generally evened out, definitely no overall gain, but since GW16, i've used 40 of the100 in hits and gained a NET 50-60 points, halved my rank from 300k to 150k and have a team in much better shape. For me it was a case of play 7 or 8 players, o risk a hit or 3 and i got lucky, picked well.

How many DGW’s do you guys think we will have for the rest of the season?

I imagine there’s so many games to reschedule and midweeks that suit some teams and not others, as well as the usual DGW’s from Carabao final and FA Cup.

Do you reckon it could be something crazy like 6+?

Jesus, I know what happened. From the rules..

If an opposing player touches the ball after the final pass before a goal is scored, SIGNIFICANTLY ALTERING THE INTENDED DESTINATION OF THE BALL, then no assist is awarded.

Intended destination is key here. It doesn't mention altering the direction of the ball, just changing the intended direction, which was clearly Salah.

Everton investing in a left back and apparently a new right back in Patterson from Rangers, who does look quality I have to say. All they need now is a couple of new centre backs and a defensive midfielder and I’d consider investing in their defence 😀

I do think he's generally pretty good. Personally wouldn't rate him as excellent. He definitely has the odd mistake in him and can be erratic. But I guess having such a lacklustre defence in front of him doesn't help

He had a dodgy couple of months last season but for the last year he’s been excellent. I agree he can look erratic at times but he’s mellowed a lot since he had his new hair style.

He’s an above average keeper who at times shows flashes of brilliance/sheer luck. He’s not excellent. He’s not physically imposing. And he doesn’t have the aura of world class keepers that worries opposition strikers. In fact I’d bank that most strikers fancy scoring past Pickford

Its the other way round, he is a good shot stopper and has a delicate delivery with his foot, aside from that he is hopeless. Cant command, which is perhaps the most important for a goalie, to give the defenders safety and guidance, and he does to many mistakes. Everton are about where his abilities corresponds.

    B) Rudiger & Mahrez > Robbo & Maddi (if fit) and bench Johnson & Bernardo? (-4)
    C) Rudiger > Robbo & bench Keane (Mahrez value should hold, means no -4, would still have 6.7M ITB)

Cavani might start based on RR comments, trying hard to keep him till end of season.

          Laurie Whitwell @lauriewhitwell
Harry Maguire injured for Manchester United v Wolves.
Eric Bailly has a chance to play despite subbed off v Burnley. Phil Jones in contention if not.

Man City(2), Chelsea(6) and Liverpool(6) forwards listed on fpl scored total of 14 league goals. Just an observation. I guess it’s just an anomaly but still a bit crazy.

Is Raphinha to Bayern still on the cards? It's gone quiet since the news first broke.

Next few weeks should be good. It's like an international break but still with proper football to watch. Will be glad to take a break from FPL and the constant refreshing twitter/reddit/this site for who has or hasn't got covid 30 minutes before the deadline every other day. Should get some clarity on DGWs too.

Serious question: wildcarded in Pickford, Gray and DCL in a push to get into the top 1000……….have I completely ruined myself?

Could work out well for you. I'd wait until after the Norwich game before considering transferring any of them out (subject to DGW announcements changing the situation, of course)

Luckily Norwich is up next so it will likely work out. I'd look to remove Pickford and one of Gray/DCL out after that.

So who are the other 2 managers? Some managers have 3 top 1Ks in the last 3 seasons, they are the ones to notice who had done well with all the Covid mess.

I am aware there are better managers. I'm not interested in those. Just wanted to have a feel what people consider better...consistency or the odd unbelievable rank mixed up with some shocking ones.
