FanTeam winner’s tips for the Second Chance half-season Fantasy game

Sponsored by Fanteam

Top FanTeam tips from 2020/21 champion and €200k winner Josh Wooldridge

Hello all once again.

In my latest piece, I am going to go over Fanteam’s brand new, free-to-play Second-Half game, which has a whopping £20,000 for the lucky winner! It kicks off in Gameweek 22 and in this I’m going to take a look at the rules, some key factors to consider and players to think about at this early stage.

For a full recap of how to play, click the below link:

AFCON

By the time this tournament kicks off, the African Cup of Nations will be in full flow, and thus a few of our key players will be missing. Some of these players include Sadio Mane, Riyad Mahrez, Edouard Mendy and of course, Mohamed Salah. They will be missing at least Gameweeks 22 and 23, and so in the majority of cases, these players won’t be in my thoughts when selecting my initial squad.

However, this could be a crucial use case for the ‘safety net’.

The safety net feature has been deployed with great success in the Champions League group games, and is a factor again here. What the safety net means is that if your player doesn’t start a fixture, he is auto-subbed out for a cheaper player from the same team. Most relevant here, if Salah and Mane don’t play for example, and you pick them, they will autosub out for Diogo Jota. Similarly with Mahrez, If you picked him whilst he’s on AFCON duty, you would get one of Phil Foden, Ilkay Gundogan or Jack Grealish on, depending on who Pep Guardiola decided to select that week! However, it is important to note this autosub rule does not also transfer the armband to your autosub – this would still go to your vice-captain. So do not captain Salah whilst he is at AFCON, thinking you will get Jota…

UNLIMITED TRANSFERS

Another key factor in this tournament, which I believe is a first of its kind, is that you can roll unlimited transfers. You also get a Wildcard, which is far less unexpected, but these two things together could lead to a possibly interesting strategy. With the help of the safety net, provided you pick players who have good safety nets, it feels like it would be easy to roll several weeks in succession. The result of this could be that you effectively get to play two or three Wildcards across the 17 Gameweeks, if you identify some key weeks with big fixture shifts. It will require you to make very solid selections in your Gameweek 22 teams, but if done well, I think this has the potential to be a winning formula.

AVOID CHELSEA

A team to avoid from the off will undoubtedly be Chelsea. This is absolutely nothing to do with their ability, as they are generally great assets, but more their fixture run that starts when this game does. They have Manchester City and Spurs in Gameweeks 22 and 23, followed by two blanks caused by the Club World Cup in Gameweeks 24 and 25 (assuming this tournament goes ahead!). For this four-week block, I will almost certainly have no Chelsea assets, but I will be sure to get some in Gameweek 26 when they have some wonderful fixtures.

I touched on it earlier, but the very best chance of rolling transfers is to pick players who have solid safety nets. This means that even if one of your starting XI gets injured, you have someone to fall back on. Building on this, it means you don’t necessarily have to use a transfer on that slot in your team, especially if it is a short-term injury or suspension. The only thing I must re-iterate is do not put your captain or vice-captain on someone who is going to be auto-subbed out, as the captaincy will not move to the subbed in player.

PLAYER SELECTION

Now for a section on players I would pick. Liverpool have a great run of fixtures from Gameweek 22, and so I would have at least two or three of their assets. Jota and Trent Alexander-Arnold both look very appealing to me for this run, even though they will be without Salah and Mane.

Manchester United are a similar story although have middling form. I was initially tempted to take a punt on Marcus Rashford, as he has a safety net of Jaden Sancho and Mason Greenwood in the event that he doesn’t play, but the Red Devils aren’t exactly putting in a convincing audition.

Manchester City have a tricky game in Gameweek 22 with the visit of Chelsea but after that their fixtures are great, and they are somewhat fixture-proof in any case. Joao Cancelo is a great play, and has extra insurance in this game when he occasionally gets a rest. The safety net also enables us to take a punt on one of their midfielders, knowing we will get one of their attacking assets guaranteed.

As for the cheaper teams, I like the fixtures of Aston Villa, Everton, Leeds and Newcastle United. Everton are a ‘wait and see’ for me in terms of picking a favourite asset at the time of writing, but from the other teams, Ollie Watkins (if fit) and Raphinha all appeal to me, and would be in consideration if I was submitting my squad today. They are very much talismans for their respective clubs and have the ability to score decent points.

ENTER SOONER RATHER THAN LATER

On a final note, I would advise to submit your teams sooner rather than later. Whilst Fanteam have done an excellent job of ensuring people can’t make £20m extra budget by buying and selling players each week before Gameweek 22, there is still an advantage to be had by entering the tournament early.

If any player you wish to include in your Gameweek 22 squad goes up between now and the beginning of the tournament, then you will keep this as sell-on value from Gameweek 23 onwards. Whilst this is only a small advantage, it essentially means your budget will likely stretch further now than it would if you log in immediately before Gameweek 22.

Good luck everybody and I hope someone reading this is the lucky one who can get their hands on £20,000, which is simply amazing for a free-to-play fantasy football tournament!

How much do you think Salah will drop to before he is back in the game in wk 24 or 25?

You reckon it'll go that low? In my experience it tapers off after the gw. moving into a passive period. It'll pick up before the next gw in 2 weeks time.

Just going on the assumption that surely all active players will sell him, rather than leave 13m on the bench.
By that notion his ownership will massively drop and so should his price

Not too sure how the algorithm works. Wouldn't dead or 'non-active' teams contribute negatively on sales for such a highly owned player?

No, they'll just FH him out in 22 and then bench in 23, and then he might be back already.

He’s still owed by 55% of teams, can see him easily drop by 0.2-0.3 in next 2 gameweeks. He’s 12.8m now, was 13.3m at peak

        He was 13.1 at peak.

Managed to sell him at 13.1, got 12.8 for him and he's now 12.8 base value. Happy days.

My thoughts as well. Bought at 12.5 (pre-GW1), sold for 12.8 when he was 13.1 and hoped he would drop under the 13 before i wanted him back. The fact that he could go well under the 12.8 is a big bonus

Ok, this might be a really dumb question but what's the value of actually owning him? I mean, he has scored points too - depending on when exactly you sold him could be five points average per GW. Surely that counts for something too?

I don't mean to piss on anyone's parade here, I'm just genuinely not really following this train of thought that selling someone early is a flat out good thing if you avoid price drops.

Sure, this much I get. I just feel it's like presenting half of the information. Like, if you thought you were playing it smart and jumped on the Gallagher train after his 15 point haul on GW 16 you're now down like 20 points compared to keeping Salah until now. Sure, you'll be making a bit of money but shouldn't you rather have your money spent and get more points?

Ok, you're actually down only 13 points but my point still stands. That said, it obviously goes both ways and if you went for KDB you'd be up quite a bit now too - which is what I mean with presenting only half of the information.

I get what you're saying. Most (me incl) went Salah > Son.

Since selling Salah didn't have a game (0), blanked with a missed penalty and scored against Chelsea. Son out did that.

Nearly 20% of the game have sold him already. How many active players are there? Some will have made the strategic choice to hold through the Blanks too. I can’t see an other 0.3 going unless he gets injured at AFCON

Could this be worth a BB in 22 if the double is something like we expect. Right now I would only need to get Guaita for free but would probably be tempted to move Coufal or Bilva for a hit.

    DeGea Guaita

    TAA Cancelo Regulion Coufal Kilman

    Son Jota Bilva Moura Bowen

If you can get a bench of players that you'd be happy with starting, then in my eyes that's a good enough bench boost. Been trying for seasons now to plan the perfect bench boost with double gameweekers throughout and always something that goes wrong

Yep. No solid plans. But roughly.

FH (1) in GW22 or another double
      FH (2) in GW30(?) blanks
WC end of season before doubles
      BB after that WC
      TC whenever

WC end of season before doubles
        BB after that WC

I reckon the BB after that WC 'could' be your weakest play. The point being; most seasons the title is won and you have quite a few 'renegade' players that come into play over the regulars. Could prove for a weak first 11, and then bench is required anyway.

Ideally BB22, WC around 24-26 depending on fixture swings, FH in the big BGW whenever that may be. No idea about the 2nd FH or TC, but I'm sure an opportunity will reveal itself later in the season. Maybe 36 - there's always a DGW around then

City needs a striker and with the amount of service Ronaldo would have gotten there, he would be as essential as Salah. Just think about Grealish playing left and having a target who can finish.

Ronaldo was never going to City ; City would never have wanted Ronaldo. Hell they dilly-dallyed over Kane knowing they could have Haaland for a third of the price a year later.

        This is my analogy haha
When Bruno arrived it was like buying a nice house on a sh*t street. United then tried to add another storey (CR7) thinking they would have the best house, still on a sh*t street but then realised the planning was off and there's limited access to the new level. Re-sale have has now dropped and they're left with a sh*t house.

Just depends on the double's frustratingly tbh, theirs loads of games too between now and then that will undoubtedly have influence on our picks. So just impossible to answer.
I know we have to look on the positive side and accept its the same for everyone but this playing the week ahead only (that isn't even confirmed) is just sucking all the pleasurer and purpose out of why i even play the game, very frustrating indeed.

Forwards are a real pain this season!

If you had to lock in 3 for at least 10 weeks who would you go for- I think I would say ( and DCL more in hope and fixtures)
Antonio Dennis DCL ( and spend more on defence and midfield)

Just took a glance at Wolves defence

With Saiss gone for AFCON and Boly still injured, Marcal should slot in at LCB (been there before) while Ait-Nouri comes back in at LWB, where he's been preferred over Marcal for a while now anyway

    Semedo . Kilman Coady Marcal . Ait-Nouri

Then I guess Saiss replaces Marcal in the team when he returns

People with only 1 FH left. Is your plan to use it in GW30? That's going to be the harshest of BGWs I assume? Pending any COVID-related changes.

    1. Zimo
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 3 months ago

Never works out in BGW. Use for the double in 33 or 36

U can use your transfers to get the important players in BGW. There usually aren't a lot

    2. Hotdogs for Tea

FH in a blank is quite useful because you can ignore it, maintain the best possible squad in the run up to the blank by using your transfers positively rather than picking up dross players that play in the blank.

The value of the FH in a blank is never just limited to that one blank game week but also the games before and afterwards by ignoring the blank and prioritising your transfers in those weeks.

      1. Zimo
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 3 months ago

Why would u want to FH to those dross players then? Waste of a FH for me. I'd rather have 6 of the players that I think will get me points and 5 blankers than FH and get those extra 10 points from 5 players who won't get anything. Better to use in a double.

        1. Hotdogs for Tea
          • 8 Years
          2 years, 3 months ago

because you get the absolute best you can in that game week when others are probably holding on to their bench players and a few cheapies - it’s not the total points that you score in the game week, it’s the amount of extra points you get over your rivals and teams with just 6 players.

And as I said, you don’t have to dead end your team trying to get a few blank players in with transfers, you can ignore it and attack the fixtures before and afterwards.

There are many ways of playing the game, this is just another example, I will decide what to do based upon the information in hand at the time and not dismiss anything until then.

I will probably FH in the doubles but I don’t think I will need to in 22, so am sitting on all my chips and a bit flexible at the moment.

Exactly right - there are many ways to play the game. I've looked at my team for GW22 and it looks pretty horrible so I think i'll FH but others wont need to.
FH in a blank or double works IF you gain ground on you opponents, or OR; thats all you need to worry about.
Being able to ignore a blank is handy for planning and I might do that but theres always the chance by the time it comes round youre OK and dont need the FH.
