FanTeam winner’s tips for the Second Chance half-season Fantasy game

Sponsored by Fanteam

Top FanTeam tips from 2020/21 champion and €200k winner Josh Wooldridge

Hello all once again.

In my latest piece, I am going to go over Fanteam’s brand new, free-to-play Second-Half game, which has a whopping £20,000 for the lucky winner! It kicks off in Gameweek 22 and in this I’m going to take a look at the rules, some key factors to consider and players to think about at this early stage.

For a full recap of how to play, click the below link:

AFCON

By the time this tournament kicks off, the African Cup of Nations will be in full flow, and thus a few of our key players will be missing. Some of these players include Sadio Mane, Riyad Mahrez, Edouard Mendy and of course, Mohamed Salah. They will be missing at least Gameweeks 22 and 23, and so in the majority of cases, these players won’t be in my thoughts when selecting my initial squad.

However, this could be a crucial use case for the ‘safety net’.

The safety net feature has been deployed with great success in the Champions League group games, and is a factor again here. What the safety net means is that if your player doesn’t start a fixture, he is auto-subbed out for a cheaper player from the same team. Most relevant here, if Salah and Mane don’t play for example, and you pick them, they will autosub out for Diogo Jota. Similarly with Mahrez, If you picked him whilst he’s on AFCON duty, you would get one of Phil Foden, Ilkay Gundogan or Jack Grealish on, depending on who Pep Guardiola decided to select that week! However, it is important to note this autosub rule does not also transfer the armband to your autosub – this would still go to your vice-captain. So do not captain Salah whilst he is at AFCON, thinking you will get Jota…

UNLIMITED TRANSFERS

Another key factor in this tournament, which I believe is a first of its kind, is that you can roll unlimited transfers. You also get a Wildcard, which is far less unexpected, but these two things together could lead to a possibly interesting strategy. With the help of the safety net, provided you pick players who have good safety nets, it feels like it would be easy to roll several weeks in succession. The result of this could be that you effectively get to play two or three Wildcards across the 17 Gameweeks, if you identify some key weeks with big fixture shifts. It will require you to make very solid selections in your Gameweek 22 teams, but if done well, I think this has the potential to be a winning formula.

AVOID CHELSEA

A team to avoid from the off will undoubtedly be Chelsea. This is absolutely nothing to do with their ability, as they are generally great assets, but more their fixture run that starts when this game does. They have Manchester City and Spurs in Gameweeks 22 and 23, followed by two blanks caused by the Club World Cup in Gameweeks 24 and 25 (assuming this tournament goes ahead!). For this four-week block, I will almost certainly have no Chelsea assets, but I will be sure to get some in Gameweek 26 when they have some wonderful fixtures.

I touched on it earlier, but the very best chance of rolling transfers is to pick players who have solid safety nets. This means that even if one of your starting XI gets injured, you have someone to fall back on. Building on this, it means you don’t necessarily have to use a transfer on that slot in your team, especially if it is a short-term injury or suspension. The only thing I must re-iterate is do not put your captain or vice-captain on someone who is going to be auto-subbed out, as the captaincy will not move to the subbed in player.

PLAYER SELECTION

Now for a section on players I would pick. Liverpool have a great run of fixtures from Gameweek 22, and so I would have at least two or three of their assets. Jota and Trent Alexander-Arnold both look very appealing to me for this run, even though they will be without Salah and Mane.

Manchester United are a similar story although have middling form. I was initially tempted to take a punt on Marcus Rashford, as he has a safety net of Jaden Sancho and Mason Greenwood in the event that he doesn’t play, but the Red Devils aren’t exactly putting in a convincing audition.

Manchester City have a tricky game in Gameweek 22 with the visit of Chelsea but after that their fixtures are great, and they are somewhat fixture-proof in any case. Joao Cancelo is a great play, and has extra insurance in this game when he occasionally gets a rest. The safety net also enables us to take a punt on one of their midfielders, knowing we will get one of their attacking assets guaranteed.

As for the cheaper teams, I like the fixtures of Aston Villa, Everton, Leeds and Newcastle United. Everton are a ‘wait and see’ for me in terms of picking a favourite asset at the time of writing, but from the other teams, Ollie Watkins (if fit) and Raphinha all appeal to me, and would be in consideration if I was submitting my squad today. They are very much talismans for their respective clubs and have the ability to score decent points.

ENTER SOONER RATHER THAN LATER

On a final note, I would advise to submit your teams sooner rather than later. Whilst Fanteam have done an excellent job of ensuring people can’t make £20m extra budget by buying and selling players each week before Gameweek 22, there is still an advantage to be had by entering the tournament early.

If any player you wish to include in your Gameweek 22 squad goes up between now and the beginning of the tournament, then you will keep this as sell-on value from Gameweek 23 onwards. Whilst this is only a small advantage, it essentially means your budget will likely stretch further now than it would if you log in immediately before Gameweek 22.

Good luck everybody and I hope someone reading this is the lucky one who can get their hands on £20,000, which is simply amazing for a free-to-play fantasy football tournament!

Is it wise to ignore Arsenal players due to upcoming blanks?

Want to hit Dalot + Foden => Robertson + Saka

I guess you can look at them in GW26

Spurs and Wolves in next 3 are not the best fixtures for attacking returns

Fair comment, but their form is attracting, can easily score more than 1 vs City with full XI

Arsenal haven't scored more than one goal per match against an in-form defence this season

We have access to defensive form via results and stats, before the match

"They kept a clean sheet" is hindsight. I'm referring to predictability

Arsenal just gained form themselves. You can remember 0-5 hammering from City in GW3 - thisbeas their 3rd loss from the start. You should agree that today's Arsenal who could win City in last GW is a different team.

I'm not talking about wins or losses. I'm referring to the predictability of their attack. So far this season, if Arsenal is facing a team that's been defending well in their last 6, Arsenal won't score more than once. That's the trend. They can reach any number of goals against any other type of defensive form

Trends change, but that's the trend, 21 GWs in

Good defences ahead do not spell out attacking hauls for Arsenal players, going by this season's trend. That's my point

Liverpool, City and Chelsea can score 2+ goals against the best defences this season (including each other). They are fixture-proof attacks. Arsenal isn't, no matter their attacking form

I hope my point is clear enough now

Trends change. I am not saying what's happened for 21 GWs will happen for the rest of the season. Just the data we have now, on which I base predictions. I do not know the reasons for the trends, but they've helped me predict Arsenal this season

The trend will change again. Trends always change. See Liverpool that went from so many CS in a row at home, to conceding in every game in a row at home

We have to operare with very little sample data to make predictions you speak about in any way.

That is why I want to catch the trend change before it become mainstream. It is like buying Dennis at 5.2 vs 6.1.

You're suggesting that Arsenal now scores many against top defences, like City, Pool, Chelsea (with DMs fit) and Wolves?

The last time they met any of those 4 was 4-0 mauling from Liverpool. Around that, they scored against everybody else. Chelsea and City at the beginning of the season. After that, they scored against everybody else

Maybe I'm wrong, but I wouldn't conclude based on hauls against West Ham's second string CBs, Southampton, Everton, Man U, Leeds and Norwich

That's a perfect continuation of the trend

Your implication is based on data analysis with bigger sample, mine - on what I have seen vs City - it is risky. Let's see what happens in next 3. Good luck mate!

They played very well in the City game. It looked like the two teams had exchanged jerseys. If that continues, then yes, the trend has changed

I saw the same thing vs Spurs in GW6, though. I hope for their sake that they can maintain it this time

So assuming that I'm going to keep Antonio and just do Salah to a DGWer (Maddison Gray/Saka/JWP) with my FT, would you consider BBing this team, TC a player like TAA (assuming BRE/LEE) or Son (ARS & bur/bha/lei) or just save my chips?

    DDG
    TAA Alonso Tierney Keane
    Son Jota ESR (Salah-replacement)
    King Wood

    (Guaita Cancelo Bowen Antonio)

BB, will give more freedom when 2nd WC gets activated.

You can do Alonso to someone with decent DGW fixtures for -4pts. Alonso to Semedo/Emerson might work.

Yeah Alonso and ESR are tricky hold for my BB team. Can get almost anyone for Alonso including Robbo, and can get Gray for ESR which I think is a great pick up for GWs to come.

              Lovely stuff

I've had Robbo pencilled in for weeks. Probably one of the best differentials until GW26, as the Liverpool triple-up transitions from Salah-Jota-TAA to Jota-TAA-Robbo to Salah-TAA-Robbo for me

Yeah I also think he'd run amok after serving the ban. No Mane and Mo means the team could rely on the prowess of the fullbacks even more.

The question is, is Alonso to Robbo worth -4? 🙂

                  That's tough. That's quite tough

Alonso's attacking threat and one good fixture in the DGW (but with Kepa), vs Robbo's form and fixtures until GW26

I think the medium-term fixtures (IF you can afford Salah back without selling him), tilt this in Robbo's favour

Good morning. Would really appreciate some opinions? Totally screwed my fpl team and rank over the holidays!

Had no idea about the double gameweek 21. Sold Salah for Son, then bought Salah back at 13.0, now he's at 12.8 😥

1ft, 1.2itb. All chips available. Will definitely wait for news on dgw22. But Salah will fund anyone. Possibly Kane for Lacazette?

    DDG Foster
    TAA Cancelo Laporte Alonso Livra

No choice but to sit tight at the moment. That team should get at least 6-7DGWers, add couple of moves and you can field close to 10 which is good enough. Worst case scenario, its FH time.

I'd definitely go for WC22, with this squad

Both keepers, Livra, Luiz, Laca + Alonso (fixtures and blanks) need to move on, and then Salah with a buy-back plan for GW24 (Son and Jota, 2 FTs)

Dive into https://www.livefpl.net/myteam/ and have BGWs 25 + 27 in mind, following this: https://twitter.com/BenCrellin/status/1476955721623347206?s=20

The WC is usually delayed for the big DGWs late in the season, limiting the use of that powerful chip to just a few GWs

WC21 or WC22 with a long-term plan takes advantage of the unusually early DGWs this season, preps for blanks, and then still holds chips and many FTs to plan ahead for the usually predictable postponements due to Cups

That's the way I see it, in this unusual season. Especially with the fixture swings for the pre-GW21 FPL template: Arsenal, Chelsea, Salah

This is actually great positive thinking. I usually use my wildcards early, for this exact reason. It can only be beneficial, no reason to hold onto it. Especially with 2x fh, bb, tc in hand. Thanks!

the problem with forward planning right now is the unknown for postponements in fa cup and PL. Too much uncertainty to use wc now given players away at afcon etc and we can't be certain when they'll return.

            1. Ze_Austin

I understand the hesitation, but I strongly believe that "I won't prepare because things can go wrong with my preparation" usually confirms that things will go wrong. Doing nothing is a good strategy for a good team with good fixtures. But playing each GW as it comes, with no regard for fixture runs, already certain blanks, and known AFCON dates... Feels riskier than forming a few flexible plans and then adapting them as more info emerges

See the team in the original post. Would you avoid a WC for that team because future plans can change?

Sorry I didn’t mean not to have some kind of plan or options but using wc in 22 feels like I wouldn’t last that long in terms of the team I’d want given the uncertainty so I’m going to navigate it with FH22 (likely) then assess whether to use transfers to get Salah back on his return or wait to wc in 28 post the Liverpool Arsenal blank. Still gives a good enough run to maximise wildcard

                  That works too, yes

The reason I prefer WC21/21 is that a good WC team for the doubles is also good long-term, as long as there's a plan to get Salah back for Jota

I agree that yours is a very viable plan too

I'm not referring to Man U's ambitions. Just saying he's been one of *their* best recently, and I feel he'll be missed vs Villa

Leeds have been horrible, but they'll miss Raphinha if he's suspended. That's the kind of contribution to a team I'm referring to. Not that he's Messi

I stupidly included him (and Ron) in my wildcard team last gw. United have been amazingly turgid at times since SAF left nearly 8 years ago, which makes me cringe when some pundits still refer to them as the biggest club in the world.

      Hes been rubbish.

One decent goal against Burnley and the pundits act like he can be a solid CM.

United lose games because of the midfield. He is one of the problems in midfield.

I think cashing in on Aubameyang would be a wise move for Arsenal. He's causing them issues in the dressing room and they've been better without them. I'd sooner get a fee than allow him to leave for free after doing nothing for years like Ozil did.

Not like I have a space for a luxury transfer but considering options.

The good fixtures have come and he still hasn’t looked good and they look diabolical as a team

I will probably hold for this double if it comes because like you say I don’t really want to be taking hits to remove double game week players but after that I’ll be looking to Downgrade to a Dennis, dcl, broja and get another power mid like kdb

    GW20

My keeper combo was Ramsdale (#ARSWOL postponed) and Guaita (NOR but reported as covid positive everywhere). Wanted to keep Guaita for the upcoming double, so did Ramsdale to DDG because of "better long term fixtures" and facing "rusty" Burnley and "toothless" Wolves later in GW21. Forgot to change Guaita to first XI because transfer made less than 7 minutes remaining before deadline. In the end, DDG conceded and Guaita's CS on the bench.

    GW21

Considered Emerson, Sanchez, COADY, Dawson and Keane for James' replacement in order to fund Foden to Son. Of course, I went with Keane. To rub salt into wound, Alonso (6) & Tierney (4) are 2nd and 3rd on bench.

It's okay, I'll be getting DDG CS against poor Wolves attack. Then Moutinho scored.

    End of rant.

To be fair, this GW I think only Lloris kept a CS, so this week is what it is. I got DDG in for a stretch of games with some doubles included so I'll pass judgement once we get there.

    Looking at the possibility of DGW2 BB, Long way to go but relies on some information down the line, but best guesses;

Foster - will he be fit and win his spot back? (i'm not sure he will)
Livra - will he be fit? (I'm hopeful he is)
Dalot - will he get back in the starting 11? If he starts one game i'd be happy enough, happy to gamble on this tbh
Foden do i need to sell him for a DGW? (Maddison etc)

My gut says sell Foden & Foster for a Bench Boost

    Current team - 1FT 0.2ITB
    Lloris
    TAA Dier Livra Dalot
    Son Jota Gray Foden*
    King Ronaldo

    (Foster Cancelo* Bowen* Antonio* )

Anyone thinking of WCing to get rid of deadwood? With 2 FHs we can presumably navigate 2 tricky DGWs.

I'm thinking of ignoring bad teams with 2 or 3 games in hand and focussing on good players on teams that have looked great for weeks (Arsenal attack, Wolves and Brighton defence etc.).

    I'm 0.1 off this..

    Sa.
    TAA. Cancelo. Tierney.
    KDB. Bowen. Martinelli. Saka. Jota.
    Kane. Antonio.

    Bachmann. Cucarella. Dennis. Kilman.

    Thoughts?

A good side with issues you will have to put up with going forward; Citeh and hammers no DGW's, Arsenal fixtures and postponements. you could well get away with it but I would limit the 3 clubs assets to a maximum of 2 in your team. Other fixture could easily be postponed; specific to the cup games played this weekend.

Hence wary of anything to do with FFS, they need as many money making streams as possible.

All depends. Spurs could play burnley as they already got back log of games, and lei could play Norwich

Of course no moves will be made now, but I'd appreciate it very much if any of you could share some early thoughts on this lot:

    Lloris
    TAA, Cancelo, Dias, Coufal, Cash
    Salah*, Jota, Foden, Bowen, Gray
    Watkins, Antonio, Broja

With probable DGWs and BGWs, what to do with Salah (and his money)?

Can't really find an issue with that team other than salah. Maybe Salah + Coufal > Son + Robbo?

The fact that Salah is back pretty soon might make me rethink getting Robbo. I would probably prefer dgw player, be it Emerson or Target for example. One of Watkins or Antonio (Foden?) to let us say to Dennis could be better way to get Salah back. Having Robbo blocks that possibility and with covid and injuries flexibility helps.

pretty soon? if egypt go far then it doesnt end until feb 6th, thats over a month away , then your talking about these players not coming back with covid , which seeing how its spreading world wide could add even more time to their availability

thats still only 2 gws the third gw starts feb 8 so thats maybe added on so look at it in terms of how many FTs u have to spend especially if u FH22

This^ This is question of fpl transfers, not days in calendar. Getting Robbo means that for getting Salah back it's either him or Jota out. If there are issues elsewhere, it may easily cost extra transfer. That is one of the reason why I have "only" Jota and TAA now.

What to do w Salah if you still own him?

    1. Keep and bench for 2 GWs, and lose possibly 0,1-0,5M?
    2. Sell now and risk a -4 if someone is injured next week? Sell him for who?
    3. Wait closer to GW22 deadline w all the info available (injury, Covid etc...)?

If you choose 2 or 3, will you buy him back immediately after Afcon, even for -4?

    1. Nightrain_
      • 7 Years

Sell for Son, and if you already have him, KDB is a good shout

No need to buyback that fast, I think you can cover Liverpool with Jota and TAA, maybe buy on Norwich or FH Norwich and buyback after the blank

If I sell Salah, I'll likely get him back asap unless there's a great DGW option, ie a ManC player

Pretty inevitable that once we get some clarity on re - arranged fixtures that amount of money without a game will mean its the right thing to sell. I see little point in selling to anyone before we know the info were all waiting for though as the risks of postponements and more significantly i think injuries makes that just simply the wrong move imo. I can take one more drop price wise before i lose selling value on the next one......that will be the line in the sand for me i reckon. Obviously not ideal buying Salah back for -4 as those who manage it without gain ground for sure but -4 for Salah is pretty likely to be re paid pretty quickly so no biggie either way.

I have two FTs so will sell for a DGW mid, upgrade Steele, and get bench boost out of the way.

      Dubravka? Davies White Brownhill

With any luck might get my 20 points there if the fixtures drop ok.

saw this in the guardian comments section, priceless.

"Having Ronaldo on your team is a bit like having the "Q" on your tile racks at Scrabble. You get all excited when it appears, because you know it should score a bunch, but somehow it just gets a lot harder for all the other perfectly good letters to score"

it makes sense to me. United struggled at times last season (to break down low blocks mainly), but they developed an impressive counter attack involving players like Fernandes and Rashford. Ronaldo seems to almost get in the way of that.

Great player, but clear to me that he hasn't helped the team overall.

Temporary Salah replacements assuming you already have Trent and Jota:

    Robertson
    Ox
    Minamino
    Firmino
Just look elsewhere for the time being

Wouldn't go near Ox with yours.

Robertson only clear option for me. Question is how much of an impact losing Salah and Mane has on them overall.

    Salah transfer plans.
I have been thinking about how best to navigate having Salah in my team. I don't like that much money on my bench, but also using a transfer to remove him and one to bring him back two weeks later seems to make no sense. I already have Son so there is no obvious midfield replacement left (the city mids are a lottery and have no double). So I have tried to think around the problem. Rather than a swap for someone I only intend to keep for 2 weeks I could buy someone at a price point of a player I already have who I plan to move on in the near future. The plan is buy someone at a similar price point who I want longer term > bank the remaining Salah money > then move the player I intend on getting rid to Salah when he returns.
My point is we don't need to do straight short term swaps, it can also be part of a longer term plan to adjust another player in our team.

I think I'll use Salah cash to get couple of decent players and then get rid of Man City mids to enable Salah. Man City mids are pain.

yep, the reason City are such a pain in FPL is the exact reason they are so good in real life.

Agreed on the city mids, they should be a gift around the 8M price but it is really a roulette wheel.
