Meet the Manager: LiveFPL creator Ragabolly speaks ahead of Gameweek 22

Joe chats to Ragabolly about his LiveFPL website, which has transformed Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers’ understanding of the game over the last three years.

When chatting to Ragabolly, it seems incredible that he manages to pack so much into a day.

Not only does he teach physics at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) but he has also finds time to create and manage such a hugely popular FPL site.

Launched in 2018, his LiveFPL set of tools, or “his baby” as he refers to it, has vastly expanded its roster of features over the years.

This includes viewing real-time rank changes, tracking the performance of ‘legendary managers’ and a ‘what if?’ tool to see how players’ potential performance can alter rank.

Perhaps the most groundbreaking feature has been his look at effective ownership (which includes captaincy and chip use) amongst groups of FPL managers, including those nearby in the rankings.

As Ragabolly explains to Joe, in this rare interview, his work with effective ownership has gone a long way to helping FPL managers understand why their arrows are red or green each week.

In addition, he chats about his Virtual FPL game, which was a welcome distraction for thousands of managers during the Covid lockdowns of 2020.

During their chat, Ragabolly also reveals how his early work in developing a virtual FPL game was interrupted by the Egyptian army and how Fantasy Football Scout creator Mark Sutherns has helped him to develop his site.

He also discusses how he deals with mixed feedback from managers, who can have different reactions to being helped to understand their FPL performance a little better.

Ragabolly discusses his own impressive FPL team management over the years – finishing inside the top 100K in ten of his 12 campaigns, with 2017/18’s finish of 2,821 his best yet.

This episode was recorded ahead of Double Gameweek 22 and the LiveFPL creator explains how his freshly Wildcarded team is geared up for this set of fixtures.

Above all, what comes through from this hour-long discussion is Ragabolly’s enthusiasm for FPL and being able to offer managers greater insight into the game they also love.

The ‘Meet the Manager’ series is where Joe chats to FPL managers with a strong record of success, an interesting view of the game and who offers the community valuable knowledge around Fantasy management.

Why are people bringing in spurs defenders on free hit? They’ll lose to Arsenal and will concede to Leicester.

Spurs are really improving stats-wise: lowest xGC of any team in last 4 matches, up to 4th lowest xGC overall for the season. But I do agree that they're 2 tough fixtures defensively

A great test, disappointed we couldn't make it 4-0.
I think, personally, I would've bowled Labuschagne the 2nd last over to allow Lyon to bowl the final one.

Nonetheless, it was definitely good to see a contest.

        That's the beauty of hindsight.
The pitch wasn't playing many tricks, it had flattened out and we did lose 7 overs to rain today.

But yes, even declaring as soon as Khawaja had made 100 would've saved some overs.
Optimally you would've slogged with the wickets we had in the shed but this was hard to do so with the century looming.

    Maneuvering Salah:
Most of us have faced this predicament and used various methods to move him out. have we really given it enough conscious thought to bring him back? Now we have the added issue of son getting injured, who was the ideal go to guy as a place holder for Salah's return. Reliable options such as Ronaldo and Kane cost a 2 transfers to get to and the inevitable 2 transfers to see Salah's return. The options were limited to say the least. Now what do we do?
Let us look at a calculated risk, which defies FPL logic. He is the worst performer per million by far and seems nuts to take him on. Son's injury may have been a blessing in disguise.
Son (who many have) to Bruno? It maybe not as daft as it seems. His downside is there for all to see; performance, rotation, price and most of all, moral. However, the eye test showed me, when he returned against Wolves, there was a spark, lacking from other ManU players. He has 3-4 good fixtures coming up that can cover for Salah (1 DGW too).
I still have Rjames so getting 2 DGW's for him and Son, downgrading James to a Lamptey for instance gets me extra DGW's in GW22 and a route back to Salah. Sure, there is a risk, but I believe it is a calculated one.

I wouldn't say Kane and Ronaldo have been too reliable as premium strikers.

You could just pick a new midfield and bank the cash and not worry about the premium squad structure for once, until Salah is available, or bank an extra FT to swap 2 midfielders around on his return.

      1. Eze Really?

Is there anyone better than Bruno? He will be a differential too that you could Captain rather than Ron. Not saying it is perfect but saves 8 points in hits if Kane and Ron were where you were going to. Not ideal for all and we have varying teams that require different strategies.

Bloody great. Coufal was my differential v's Norwich, and I was gunna play him v Leeds the next week as well. This is the problem with DGW's that are so spaced out - Omicron is waiting to scupper the best laid plans.
    Norwich better score now!

Looking at next week - down to 3 DGWers because of Son injury. Also have Liv, Coufal probably out and sweating on Foden, ESR & Broja starting.
Looking like I may be forced into an unwanted FH at this rate...

Issue is Son will probably miss GW23 as well, Coufal not exactly someone you want for the season and Livermento looks like a long term injury. FH only postpones the problems .. I'm in a similar boat and looks like a -8 could be the only way to solve the issue.. I'm all set for Son,Salah,Antonio to Kane(C),Bruno,Maddison... that's if Covid doesn't ruin it all

With Son out, would Moura be a good replacement to cover Spurs attack for dgw? Can’t have Kane.

    Please, friends:

    Lloris
    TAA, Cancelo, Dias, Coufal, Cash
    Salah*, Jota, Foden, Bowen, Gray
    Watkins, Antonio, Broja

    A. Salah, Watkins, Broja -> Maddison, Dennis, Ronaldo/Kane (- 8)
    B. Salah, Broja -> Maddison, Kane/Dennis (- 4)
    C. Salah, Broja, Gray -> Maddison, Bruno, Dennis (- 8)
    D. Salah, Broja -> Bruno, Kane/Dennis (- 4)
    E. Something else/Free Hit (I've got two still)

I make it that you only have one dgw player. I would be tempted by A because you need to be fairly aggressive with dgws to make up ground.

      A for me.

Thank you, sir. I read your comment below as well, and now I am tempted to be even more aggressive than A and free hit.

Only three dgw players: FH or 8 point hit for 6 dgw players?

    Sanchez/Ramsdale

    TAA, Cancelo, Dawson, Livra, Bavies

    Son, Jota, Foden, Bilva, Bowen

    Antonio, Watkins, King

Very similar team/structure to mine. I’ve got DDG Son Dennis dgw players and gut feeling is to use FH. If quite like having City and Arsenal x2 next week so the players I would take hits for I can’t say I’d want after this week (most of them anyway)

If you have 2 FH and you don’t use one in this gw when would be a good time?

I'm imagining this question being repeated over and over in a Joe Pesci voice while on a long road trip.

Considering FH and keeping Jota and have the following:

      DDG
      Alonso Reguilon Lamptey
      Mount Jota Maddison Moura
      Ronaldo Lukaku Kane

      Steele, Mbueno, Veltman, Taylor

Hopefully 16 PL teams make it through to the 4th Round of the FA Cup.

Hoping the 4th Round Draw later today keeps them all apart too.

If Leicester fudge their COVID reports, maybe. They had no hassle fielding a team yesterday, and Everton are in the same boat.
