Key player and team stats for FPL Double Gameweek 22

So, it’s confirmed that we are to have a Double Gameweek 22. I still haven’t made my mind up in terms of what to do but my first instinct is to not use the Free Hit because of the decent assets I have from Liverpool, West Ham United and Everton. That said, the plan is not set in stone and I still want to let thoughts simmer in my head for a while. With this article, I just plan to highlight a few stats and factors with regards to the teams who double.

All figures in this piece are from the Premium Members Area.

In the last four matches, Watford are in the bottom five in the league for expected goals (xG) cumulated. It is worth noting that they faced Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in that period, however, and they are middle of the pack when looking at xG for the last six matches. I wouldn’t touch their defensive assets as they are the second-worst in the league for expected goals conceded (xGC) in their last half-dozen fixtures and are without a clean sheet all season.

Two out of the Hornets’ next three opponents, Newcastle United and Norwich City, are in the bottom six for xGC in the last six matches. It is also worth noting that Watford play on Saturday, Tuesday and Friday, which makes it three games in a period of six days; an already slim squad has got slimmer with a handful of their players going to AFCON.

Out of the teams doubling, Tottenham Hotspur have the best xGC in the last six matches. That said, they are facing two teams who are in the top six for xG in their last half-dozen outings, Arsenal and Leicester City. Spurs face Southampton and Wolves in Gameweek 24 and 25 so are a decent mid-term investment, at least.

Despite Manchester United’s on-field and off-field problems, they are in the top six for xGC in the last six matches. Aston Villa and Brentford are in the bottom half of the table for xG using the same criteria. In fact, until Gameweek 27, all the teams they face are in the wrong half of the table for xG with the exception of West Ham United.

That is all from me this week and I will see you next week with another piece.

On a completely separate note, I just wanted to say a word for my cousin who I lost in the last few days. He introduced me to football and is responsible for me being so passionate about the sport and FPL. May his soul rest in peace. This is the third loss my family has had to face in a very short period of time so I just wanted to add that don’t take your health for granted and do everything you can to protect it. And show as much love as possible to your near and dear ones.

Until next time.

I should imagine Dennis has had plenty rest by now. Three starts doesn't seem out of the question.

The likes of bowen, Antonio, Dennis etc aren’t going to be rested or rotated unless they are injured/unfit imo

These clubs need to win as many games as possible to stay up/get top 4 and the managers jobs depend on it so giving your best player a rest is hardly likely

Feel like some of the posts on here read far to much into manages ‘rotating players’

Dennis is only recovering from injury though, so that will simultaneously mean he will be better rested than some but also may need to be managed more as well. I don't know how Moyes has managed to keep Antonio fit for so long this season, resting him in most midweek games up until mid-December helped of course but Antonio must be doing something different now. But 3 games in 7 days coming up including yesterday so I do wonder if he'll push it with that. Antonio didn't start the first two games of their last busy run (4 games in 11) so we'll see how much Moyes thinks he can do.

Moyes' job certainly does not depend on finishing in the top 4.

Also they have no back up to Antonio and he has a history of injuries. Won't be risked in the easiest fixture of the season imo.

I'm talking about the period in late December but I checked the earlier period of a few games within a week and it was similar.

9 Dec v Dinamo Zagreb (EL) - Benched
                  12 Dec v Burnley - Started
                  15 Dec v Arsenal - Started
                  (2/3)

22 Dec v Spurs (EFL Cup) - Not in squad
                  26 Dec v Soton - Benched
                  28 Dec v Watford - Started
                  1 Jan v Palace - Started

So like I said, he’s started every single league game this season he’s been fit for bar 1 (may have been a fitness thing against Southampton idk)

I guess we don’t have long to find out, all the best for the gw mate

He was recovering from Covid for the Southampton game so you could be right.

I still think he will be rested for this one though, especially as it’s Norwich at home.

That's fair, just think you have to take the context of the other competitions into play. I would have expected he'd not play yesterday but as he did it muddies things a bit as that's where he's often gotten his rests during busier periods. Good luck to you too

Nothing official yet, I've seen people on Twitter saying it's just clarified that he is injured but nothing from anyone normally in the know. The Athletic said Watford expect him back / to be on his way back today as he's due another checkup on his progress on Wednesday so I'd say we'd hear about it soon enough.

    Great article as always Lateriser!

5 flags this morning but hoping they all dissapear before the deadline! I only have 2DGW players in De Gea & CR7 now that Son is out, will wait to see if I think its worth pulling the trigger on a FH chip, Kane & Ronaldo look like the captain picks to me.

    Morning All,

What to do with the below team?

    DDG Steer*
    TAA Cancelo Livramento Reguilion James*
    Salah* Son* Gray Bowen Bernardo
    King Antonio Broja

Something that involves getting Ronaldo or Madisson perhaps?

So here’s my best stab at a FH draft with maximum DGW

    DDG
    Lowton Rudiger Lamptey/Cancelo
    Bruno/Moura Tielemans Mount Maddison
    Kane Dennis Ron

Still not sure if it’s worth the chip.
    Questions:
    1. Any improvements?
    2. Moura or Bruno?
    3. Any other single GWer other than Cancelo, you’d definitely keep in?

Trent, Jota & Bowen are risky omissions. Dont mind Lamptey over Cancelo though. Also, if Leicester somehow dont apply for postponement of Burnley game, I think Daka could be gold on FH

Yeah, have Trent, Bowen and Jota currently - hence unsure whether the chip is worth it.

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)

I'm tempted to move Son to KDB and then move Salah to Maddison if it looks like Leicester will fulfil the DGW or just keep Salah if not and move someone else. Bringing in someone with a single game for a hit in a DGW feels silly but I can afford to have both KDB and Salah and I'm starting to feel like going for those with DGWs isn't as simple as it usually is.

Depends what your team looked like before this.

I really would try to not WC this week if possible. The biggest problem of the WC now is that your team is not where you want it to be without forced transfers. You're going to have to restructure your team to buy Salah back, get rid of some of these deadwood DGW players etc.

Better to just try and soldier on and then WC when you can build a team you're genuinely happy with as it is. The goal, at least to me, is to wildcard into a team that uses all your budget, that can roll FT the following week, and has a long term set of fixtures covered as well as strong captaincy options.

No team that is viable for this week can be built like that.

      1. Moxon
        • 9 Years
        2 years, 3 months ago

Very thoughtful response Camzy, thank you. The WC team would make 11 changes to my previous squad which is unfortunately littered with flags.

I have money in the bank to get Salah back in one transfer but I do agree that there might be some players in the squad that I might not want long-term.

Feels too soon to me, since this week I'm looking at 4 no shows (using all 3 subs to field 10). I'm looking to play it soon though, just trying to find the sweet spot where I still have a strong 15 but the risk of cancellations has mostly receded

Antonio free transfer to Dennis for double game week plus Norwich after that? Antonio not really firing in spite of a few returns in recent matches and Hammers have Manchester United in gw23. Surely, Dennis is favourite. Anyone think that is madness?

Madness, they have Watford after Utd and Leeds is a great game

Leeds is indeed a good fixture but so are Newcastle, Burnley and Norwich. Antonio not exactly firing on all cylinders, is he? Ok, I'll give it more thought. Cheers

I like the free hit option gw22 as it’s a good opportunity to load on players I wouldn’t normally own. My current team looks like this:

    DDG
    Alonso Cucurella Reguilon
    Fernandes Mount Maddison Moura
    Ronaldo Kane Dennis

    Bachmann Lamptey Tsimikas Brownhill

Thoughts on this free hit squad?

At the moment I have Barnes instead of Moura and a different bench...

it's about as good as it gets. I have a real feeling Lookman is going to get returns, but your selections are good. Absolutely no need to have doublers on the bench because the likelihood of players missing out twice is low. Having Lamptey there plus reserve keeper is adequate insurance. Nice.
However, given their form, I wouldn't be surprised if Bowen or Jota outscored Bruno so keep in mind the single game players with good fixtures.

Good point. Jota is one im seriously considering.

I think TAA will probably outscore your whole defence. Leaving out the likes of TAA, Jota, Bowen is very risky.

TAA has Covid so not sure he will be firing

The more interesting question and more relevant one is what your current team looks like and whether FH is worth it or not. An FPL manager should be able to build a FH team for one week without any help.

Hey Camzy! Heaps of flags and only two double gameweek players. So my hand is forced really. Plus I see this gameweek as an opportunity as it’s a dgw without the better teams who I’ll have loaded up on otherwise.
