FPL team news: Gameweek 22 injury updates on Dennis, Ronaldo and Leicester

We’ve got the latest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) team news information in our first press conference summary ahead of Double Gameweek 22.

The managers of Leicester City, Watford, Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace all faced the media on Thursday, while Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) gave an update on his own fitness in a stand-alone interview with the Premier League.

We’ll have the latest on the other 16 top-flight clubs in Friday’s recap but in the meantime, check out what we learned on the fitness front following last weekend’s FA Cup third-round ties.

For much more detailed information, consult our Predicted Line-ups page from Friday onwards and Injuries and Bans feed.

CRISTIANO RONALDO

Ralf Rangnick will face the media tomorrow to hopefully give us the full lowdown on the Manchester United team news ahead of their Double Gameweek 22 but Ronaldo provided an update of his own on Thursday, saying that he was “confident” of recovering from a hip muscle issue in time for the weekend.

“I hope so. We will try on Thursday. I will try to train as normal. Let’s see how the body reacts. Fingers crossed. I’m confident.

“I’m good. I just have a little touch but, you know, it’s part of my work. You know, we have to feel some pain sometimes. It’s nothing big and I hope to be good soon.” – Cristiano Ronaldo on whether he will be fit to face Aston Villa

WATFORD

Emmanuel Dennis (knock), Ben Foster (groin), Christian Kabasele (calf) and Kiko Femenia (hamstring) are all back in training ahead of the Newcastle game.

Watford initially said that the quartet would be “assessed before a decision is made about their involvement at the weekend” but Claudio Ranieri was a lot more confident when asked about these players in his pre-match presser.

“Available is Ben Foster, Christian Kabasele and Kiko Femenia, and Dennis. Everybody is available and we are ready.” – Claudio Ranieri

Ismaila Sarr (knee), Nicolas Nkoulou (hamstring), Kwadwo Baah (ankle) and Peter Etebo (quad) remain out but new signings Hassane Kamara, Edo Kayembe and Samir have all trained this week and are in contention.

Imran Louza, Adam Masina and William Troost-Ekong are representing their nations in Cameroon.

LEICESTER CITY

The chances of Leicester City’s match against Burnley going ahead were boosted after Brendan Rodgers’ press conference, with the Foxes’ head coach revealing that he is expecting at least five of his squad to return this weekend.

“We’ve got Patson Daka back. Luke Thomas will be back. Çağlar Söyüncü will be back. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and James Justin too, which is great news for us. He will be available, maybe not to start, but he’s back in the squad again.

“Over the last games, for the FA Cup game, the rules are different. You have to play under-23s and under-18s players and that’s what we did do. In all the games, we’ve been trying to put out a team that is competitive.

“For Everton, according to the Premier League rules, we had to have 13 players and goalkeeper, but we had eight, so the game didn’t go ahead. The return of players gives us a chance to get on with the fixtures.” – Brendan Rodgers

Wesley Fofana (leg), Jonny Evans (hamstring), Ricardo Pereira (leg), Ryan Bertrand (knee) and Jamie Vardy (hamstring) plus a trio of AFCON-bound players are all missing, while there was no update on Timothy Castagne (thigh) or Boubakary Soumare (illness).

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION

Graham Potter confirmed on Thursday that Enock Mwepu (hamstring) is set to be absent for “a few weeks”, with the Zambian joining Jeremy Sarmiento (hamstring) and Lewis Dunk (knee) on the sidelines for the M23 derby.

Yves Bissouma is also unavailable thanks to international duty.

Dunk will rejoin team training on Sunday and has an outside chance of recovering for Brighton’s second Double Gameweek 22 fixture against Chelsea but Potter indicated that the clash with Leicester in Gameweek 23 is a likelier target.

CRYSTAL PALACE

Patrick Vieira confirmed that James Tomkins (unspecified) and James McArthur (hamstring) are out of tomorrow’s game against Brighton. The Palace boss added that McArthur still has a “long way to go” and will remain out for a few weeks.

Vieira declared that everyone else was fit (Conor Gallagher returned against Millwall in the FA Cup last weekend), although did have some cautionary words about Vicente Guaita.

“He wasn’t ready and he wasn’t fit enough to play the [Millwall] game. Hopefully [he’ll be ready for Brighton]” – Patrick Vieira on Vicente Guaita

Wilfried Zaha, Jordan Ayew and Cheikhou Kouyate are all away at AFCON.

I was quite keen on the Free Hit (and I'm still not ruling it out) but as I'd probably need to sell Salah and Son next week anyway, would I be better off just taking hits this week?

I don't have many doublers at all.

    RUDIGER Trent Cancelo

      Lose Son and Salah for two DGWs and leave it at that;
      Then lose Rudiger next week as he has two blanks;

    Antonio, King, Watkins

    Foster, Son, Foden, Livra

Antonio to Dennis crossed your mind?!

He’s playing the bottom 3 teams in the next 3 games. He’s the leading striker in points and has more doubles to come.

Antonio has not done much lately and even played a depleted Leeds at the weekend and didn’t score. Then he has united, the same day Dennis has Norwich at home...

I say do the transfer lol

Hello, Digne was 1 yellow away from a ban at Everton, does his move to Villa (who have already passed the threshold) mean he cannot be banned with a yellow this week?

Is Antonio -> Dennis worthwhile for free if no other pressing concerns? Also own King and Ronaldo

Guess I need to shift Targett with the Digne news, but there's no defenders I really want.. Any suggestions? Money no object really.

Current backline is Targett, Reguilon, Cancelo, TAA, Lamptey

Fair. If you're going to bench him, someone cheap from a team with doubles to come? Burnley?!

Same problem here Looking at cheapish DGW defender like Lamptey, Cucu, Lowton or Thomas who hopefully can recuperate part of the -4 needed, and be benched later

Wolves defender like Ait Nouri or Coady are sleepers. Decent chance of CS this GW too

Is it definite that Digne would be preferred over Targett?

I’d argue Targett has been much better than him past couple of seasons…

Not definite but I imagine they paid £25 million for him for a reason

I think target might play this week so wouldn’t ship him for a hit.

Digne hasn’t played in a while and just moved, he might come on near the end I guess...

With the usual disclaimer about this being very team-specific, I was wondering when those choosing not to FH this week are thinking they may do later this season?

I'm still considering taking a hit or two to field 4/5 DGW players, but I feel I'd just be doing that to get by. The last couple of months have felt like I've just been surviving with small green and red arrows.

While it's not the best DGW ever on paper, there's always scope to make big gains at times like this. As I'm one of those with very few DGW players, I'm considering a FH to try and make gains. I still have both FHs, hoping my other will be enough to get me through the bigger FA Cup blank weekends later this season.

So this is less of a 'does my team need a FH or not' question and more just throwing it out there to see what people think. How are you approaching this week?

As you say, it's team specific. I'm not exactly sure when I will use mine, but I have had an uncharacteristically good December and January (so far). I'm coming off the back of 90 points in GW21 and I'm top of my mini league, so I have no need to make gains. Plus, they have all used their first free hit and I can't see any of them blowing their second one on this GW so I don't need to play it as a defensive move. I am just convinced there will be better opportunities later in the season.

Nice one, thank you. That makes sense. I think this week for comes down to wanting 4/5 DGW players, including Kane or Ronaldo, but that would require a second successive -8. Last week's -8 paid off but it would seem a waste to keep doing that. Well done on your excellent score for 21 and good luck for the rest of the season!

Suppose it’s team specific. I will take a -4 (Son to Bruno and Broja to Dennis/King) enabling Salah back in soon. That’ll hopefully give me 4 doubles so I’m happy with this.

That seems very decent. Do you have Kane or Ronaldo?

Im in the same boat as you only 3dgw players and all chips in hand. Plus have Salah and Son and although its not a great DGW I might have to play the FH rather than take a -8 to get salah, son and a striker out for Kane, maddison plus maybe bruno or someone and be stuck with some of those in my team.

Im worried about potentially wasting it with covid postponements or just players missing out late, but on the other hand can get Kane and Ronaldo in plus chelsea def and some mid punts and keep a couple SGW mids like Jota and Bowen and get 8-9 dgw players in and a full bench, could well be worth it in our positions.

Still to decide what to do, got to weigh it up and wait for more news but its looking like a decent option, if I do FH will just hold salah and sell son next week for free and no hits.

Id probably use my other FH in the FA cup blank week and TC on Salah when Liverpool have their double and WC and BB for the big double at the end of the season. So the other FH is tbd could be GW27 when Liverpool and Chelsea blank or the smaller double in gw34 or around then not sure though but this week seems to be a good time Id say.
