Meet the Manager & Great and the Good – The story of the season so far

Joe catches up with Great and the Good league founder Greyhead to look back on 2021/22 so far and look at some key tips for the rest of the Fantasy Premier League season.

With less than half of the campaign to go, the Meet the Manager series takes some time to assess how it has gone so far for some of the most engaged and prolific managers in the game.

As well as looking back on lessons learned from the series’ guests, Greyhead reveals the highs and lows of the legendary managers he is tracking.

This is the second time Greyhead has been a guest on the series season, with his previous appearance focusing on his own success in FPL, and this campaign in particular.

During their latest hour-long chat, Joe and Greyhead look at the variety of narratives across the season to see how managers have coped. This takes in the strong template start to the campaign, discussions around ‘big at the back’ defensive investment as well as how they have tackled Covid chaos and its impact on top-flight football.

Why has Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) been so pivotal to their performance and just what is their favoured formation? How valuable have chips such as Wildcards and Free Hits been? And how have traditional patient managers coped with the recent flurry of festive transfers and hits?

These questions and more are considered during their chat, which also reveals the best-performing Meet the Manager guest so far and why he has excelled.

In addition, Joe and Greyhead look ahead to the rest of the campaign. What will be the emerging narratives? And will 3-4-3 formation make a return, albeit in a very different way?

Elsewhere, Gameweek 23 is not forgotten, and Greyhead reveals his team and plans should any fixture changes be announced. Crucial to his decisions will be how to squeeze Salah back into his team, when the Egypt star returns from the Africa Cup of Nations.

This latest episode was recorded on Monday January 17. It is also available as a podcast.

I hope it's an Alonso FK for a 15 pter. But realistically it's gonna be CHO g Ziyech a or something garbage like that.

I think he will. They don't have strength in depth in defense atm. They are basically locked into playing:
Azpi Thiago Rudiger Sarr Alonso unless they play someone out of position or go 4atb.

          I think it'll be:

          Kepa
          Thiago Rudiger Sarr
          Azpi Kante Jorginho Alonso
          Werner Lukaku Mount

I think this week has shown that having a clear plan is pointless, you basically need to have a rough plan in mind and assess on a week by week basis

It does look like Covid is clearing up so saving the fh’s looks to have been decent

According to a report in the (UK) Daily Telegraph, the Premier league organization are planning to stick to next week's winter break plans. This would suggest that there will be no DGW 23.
It goes on to suggest that cancelled matches will begin to take place during those weeks when Champions League and Europa League resume from mid February......

DGW plans were based on the idea that teams not in the FA Cup (which falls before GW24) could rearrange a league match that weekend instead. Burnley v Watford and Leeds v Aston Villa being the examples.

Yes this is correct - the playing of games during the IB was the flaky bit, but at least 1 game during the FA Cup weekend should happen.

Potentially controversial opinion on here but does anyone else quite like some of the differences to the FPL game in the current climate or at least think it suits their style of FPL management?

    - Early transfers being punished.
    - Less being priced out of moves as fewer people chasing value.
    - More time to make decisions without losing out.
    - More variability in outcomes.
    - Free Transfers more precious.

Clearly we all wish Covid didn’t exist and would prefer for everything else in life to be as normal.

      Cue an avalanche of disagreement...
Personally I just accept it, but I dont think people are really enthused by "more variability in outcomes", and I'm not really all that bothered about "punishing" anyone for early transfers

      1. CABAYE4
        • 12 Years

To me having more variability means a better chance of differentiating without going crazy and so I like it.

Understand why many don’t and so was expecting some backlash.

Not sure free transfers are more precious when so many have been willingly taking hits of late

        Hence they are more precious....

I think that makes not taking hits a more fruitful strategy and there’s points to gain by not taking them.

I wouldn't go as far as saying I like it, but it arguably does suit my 'style' - I'm generally a very cautious manager, which suits the current situation in which the number/variety of risks is increased, and I am also not a very good long term strategist, so just playing one week at a time works for me

    4. RichardNixon
      • 7 Years
      2 years, 2 months ago

It's great for those who like to take hits imo. I'm having a blast. Since GW17 I have moved from 60 pts behind leader of ML to 40 in front. I've taken six hits in that time and my rank has shot up from 570k to 170k. All chips in place and a foundation for a strong finish to the season.

Haven't made any early transfers at all which helps. Team value less important this season due to cheap players like Martinelli, Broja, etc and little value in premiums. And I have had a full squad of players who start pretty much each game.

      I like it

Personally find nothing more boring than everyone having 7 of the same players and salah (c) every week literally relying on 1-2 differentials to make ground

And just to provide a counter to your ‘early transfers punished point’ it’s actually also a good time to make ground with early moves

A couple of weeks ago I got son in early for Salah and gained 0.2 because everyone else waited until the last minute

It could easily have been punished of course but still

      1. CABAYE4

Definitely agreed on the boredom when everyone is the same.

Hadn’t thought of your second point but I like that it’s given you a different option which you have gained from.

I really dig the unpredictability. I think having a strong bench is key. It also levels the playing field slightly, which leads to less certain outcomes. It some ways it makes the game more exciting.

I've been enjoying it as I've been able to keep up with team news and postponements, checking in regularly and making informed decisions. But I have to say it has been a bit of a grind. I enjoy the planning aspect of the game, and you can't plan right now.

This week I was busy so had to go down a different route of logging in 10 mins before the deadline to try and digest all the news (Ronaldo injured, Spurs postponed) of which was a lot of conjecture at the time (or maybe I just didn't get round to reading any credible sources). Got every 50:50 call wrong (transfer, benching, captaincy) and here I am on 29 points and all my good work has been undone. Liberating in a way.

I feel you dude. 32 (-4). Two bad transfers in, Dennis captain finished, back out of the top 100k, lost ground on ML leader, and don't own Bruno so United will be a painful watch. All this after 3 green arrows in 4 had got me to 70k.

        We'll go again.

I think you sum it up pretty well. A lot of 50/50 decisions seeing big swings and often we're having to make a last minute judgement call with a lot still up in the air (are games going ahead etc) - I was never intending to get Bruno for example but Maddison not having a double and lack of options meant I took a punt on him as a Salah place holder. Whilst I can't complain at that, I also have Ronaldo (c) and Bruno (vc) so another big swing one way or another coming up 🙂

The big change for me is lack of planning you can do - I enjoy planning 3-4 gws ahead but impossible to even plan for next gw at the moment. I'd be interested to know what rank you are and whether that has more to do with it than the current climate. Lets be honest there's a lot more short term luck involved right now and it's always going to be enjoyable to come out on the right side of that

Hopefully from Feb onwards, we can plan effectively without covid disrupting them. Covid cases have dropped to 33 so it looks promising. They just need to rewrite the covid rules so it doesnt apply to injuries

My view is that you can still plan but you need to adaptable if/when everything changes and not be too tied to anything.

No doubt I have benefited in this period - currently sit just inside the top 10k as you ask. There’s definitely been plenty of luck in there but I would like to think that there’s also been a fair degree of skill contributed too.

For instance I’ve been very patient in making transfers, tried not to plan too far ahead and changed plans when information became available. I’ve also taken more risk averse options where there’s been known Covid issues and kept a deep squad in place.

You cant really plan beyond a week/2 weeks though. The landscape is too volatile atm. Thats part of the fun and where long term strategists get an advantage over punty/short term minded players. There seems to only be one style of play atm

I’ve still enjoyed planning even though I know I might never use the plans!

I think there’s still many ways to play - arguably more so atm. Some are taking lots of hits, others protecting their FT’s. Captaincy is wide open so more opportunity to differentiate on that front.

Thanks for the reply it's a interesting discussion - I'm not knocking you here as you're having a great season but having a top 10k rank certainly makes the game more enjoyable. I always say when I make the right decision it's skill but when it goes the other way it's bad luck. Maybe being risk adverse has worked out for you whereas I play it differently and like to take more punts so that could be the main thing I takeaway from this. (saying that if I was risk adverse I wouldn't have got Bruno this week!)

I would disagree on the planning side of things, recently it's been impossible to plan 3-4gws ahead, in fact it's been impossible to plan for the next gw. Best we can do is wait until the last minute and make decisions with the info we have....and then hope for the best 🙂

So the latest is no new fixtures to be added to gw23 because the PL want a proper winter break…?

Also 3 day gap between 24/25 deadlines, wonder what games could move to 24 instead.

I do think FPL should make a bigger deal out of rank histories. They just tuck them away at the bottom of the GW history page when it’s one of the most important things to us managers

That's about right! I thought I needed a break from it, certainly less time spent (young kids, busy job, etc). After a crappy start, I didn't give it much attention. If I'd known now about Hall Of Fame ranking etc, I might have made more effort. This season is probably best for a long while, been inside 100K all season but treading water now around 20K.

      I like B and C.

B since Sterling & KDB really attacks GW23-5 fixtures for City, and I think they're starting to show theyre worth the extra over Foden/Bernardo/Gundogan. Ramsey is amazing for 4.5 & Lowton allows you to both focus on Burnley doubles & give Ait Nouri/Digne more playing time.

C - if you're going to get another expensive defender, someone who can haul like Robertson makes more sense than Dias
