FPL team news: Gameweek 22 injury updates on Ronaldo, Rashford and Castagne

We’ve got the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) team news information in a press conference summary ahead of the midweek matches that will complete Double Gameweek 22.

Featured this time are Manchester United, Brentford, Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Captained by many, Cristiano Ronaldo missed Saturday’s clash with Aston Villa and many FPL managers nervously awaited the comments of Ralf Rangnick, ahead of their trip to Brentford. His update was promising, with a hint of caution.

“Cristiano and Marcus [Rashford] were training yesterday, so I suppose they will also be training today, but before the Villa game, I was also convinced that Cristiano would be available and in the end, he wasn’t. Right now I think both could be available”

Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay will return from their one-match suspension for collecting five yellow cards, as Rangnick also provided good news on Paul Pogba – out since Gameweek 9 with a thigh injury.

“What I saw in training yesterday was very promising for the future and I’m very much looking forward to having him available in two weeks time after the international break.”

Harry Maguire and Phil Jones were unused substitutes at Villa Park and Aaron Wan-Bissaka missed out due to illness. All three could play on Wednesday but Eric Bailly won’t, as he is still representing Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Son Heung-min remains unavailable until February because of a muscular injury, as are Eric Dier (muscle) and Cristian Romero (hamstring). However, Steven Bergwijn (calf) and Sergio Reguilon (muscle) have recovered and are ready to play.

LEICESTER CITY

The list of unavailable players for Brendan Rodgers’ side is huge. Higher-profile absences include Jamie Vardy – out with a hamstring problem until March – Ricardo Pereira (leg), Timothy Castagne (thigh) and Jonny Evans (hamstring).

Rodgers has at least received positive news on a few recent problems:

“Timothy [Castagne] has had an operation so he is eight to nine weeks (out). He had an issue with his thigh and he needed to go and have an operation. The ones who were available for our last game – [Kiernan] Dewsbury-Hall, [Luke] Thomas, [Caglar] Soyuncu, [Patson] Daka, [James] Justin. Those guys are available and now they have been able to train more, which is good.”

However, there remains doubts over Boubakary Soumare (illness) and Ryan Bertrand (knee).

In addition to Wesley Fofana‘s (leg) long recovery, the Foxes have lost four players to AFCON duty – Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi, Daniel Amartey and Nampalys Mendy.

BRENTFORD

Thomas Frank says that everyone who was available for the weekend defeat at Liverpool is also available to face Manchester United. That means no new absentees on top of David Raya (knee), Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgensen (hamstring), Charlie Goode (hamstring) and Joshua Dasilva (hip), plus Frank Onyeka representing Nigeria on international duty.

FPLMarc Newcastle fan that spends far too much time thinking about FPL.

    Hey all.

I've put something together (copying this from MS Excel so formatting might not be perfect) for you which you may find useful. It's the teams with which games they have available - if you're considering WC options etc.

    Arsenal 4 WOL (H) LIV (H) TOT (A) CHE (A)
    Aston Villa 2 BUR (H) LEE (A)
    Brentford 0
    Brighton 2 TOT (H) MUN (A)
    Burnley 5 TOT (H) WAT (H) AVL (A) EVE (H) LEI (H)
    Chelsea 2 ARS (H) LEI (H)
    Crystal Palace 1 WAT (A)
    Everton 3 LEI (H) BUR (A) NEW (H)
    Leeds 2 LIV (A) AVL (H)
    Liverpool 2 ARS (A) LEE (H)
    Man City 0
    Man United 1 BHA (H)
    Newcastle 2 EVE (A) SOU (H)
    Norwich 1 LEI (A)
    Southampton 1 NEW (H)
    Spurs 3 BUR (A) BHA (A) ARS (H)
    Watford 3 BUR (A) CRY (H) WOL (A)
    West Ham 0
    Wolves 2 WAT (H) ARS (A)

    Notes/observations;

    - Burnley defensively might be an obvious option as their defenders are minimal prices. Although their next handful of games are quite tough
    - Arsenal have the next most amount of games to go but all of them are awful, so I wouldn't target them
    - Spurs games look good, Watford similar but you're reliant on Dennis finding form he's seemingly lost
    - Brentford, City and West Ham are the teams without games in hand
    - There are a handful of teams with two games which might be worth targeting. Newcastle (ASM), Villa (various options), Wolves (defensive options).

Anyway, hope you find it useful.

      Great flag by Connors, I missed Leicester off the above list. The data for them is below;

      Leicester 4 EVE (A) NOR (H) CHE (A) BUR (A)

      - Worth mentioning a high number of games still to play with 3 out of 4 decent opposition. Maddison is the obvious go to player due to their high amount of unavailable players
      - The other thing worth noting is that they're a bit of an unknown quantity as they've now not played for a while so they won't be match sharp now

Good work brains. Just on Leicester they probably won’t have any mid week slots to play these games until April due to Conf league (which they are one of the favourites now) & FA cup (Forest home next round) so dont bank on any DGWs anytime soon!

          Ah, very true!

Leads to two options, the PL could give them awkward games like Uniteds 3 in 5 days or they might become great assets when fully fit later.

          One to watch.

My chances of getting Cancelo off the bench for Reguilon reduced by the game not being cancelled. They should cancel more games.

Well in fairness Norwich hadn’t scored in about 5 matches previous and he is dangerous from set pieces so wasn’t the worst decision.

Surely some of the cancelled games should move to the winter break? Given that many teams like Burnley have had a significant break so a winter break shouldnt be needed?

    1. ilikewud
      • 3 Years

It makes sense. Whats the point of this winter break when most teams have had 'breaks' with postponed games.

    2. Miniboss

Well in a sense you are right, but then again can we really call it a break, if most players are injured or ill.

It still is a break, but what I'm saying that in reality it's less of a break than it would normally be.

Same thing with vacations in jobs. I have heard people having a vacation, but they are put "on the call". Meaning the moment you get a call you need to go to work. For me that's not a vacation either. Only in certain occupations is that a vacation like for example doctors and so on.

That said , I still agree with you that there should not be a winter break , because otherwise you probably wouln't have time to play all the games in a season.

Yea, I guess if you have holidays time booked off work but were I’ll shortly before it you might as well cancel your holiday as you have already had a break.

Value can help gain rank if you use the money saved more effectively.

Perhaps more to do with GW23.
Think Arsenal would prefer to face a Salah-Mane-Keita-less-Liverpool.

    Sa
    TAA, Cancelo, Robertson, Digne
    KDB, Fernandes, Foden, Bowen
    Watkins, Dennis

    (Foster, Ramsey, Broja, Lowton)

    A) Good to go

Looks nice, good structure given FWD weirdness this season, cant see myself putting that much into GK, but that's just me. I'm probs looking at more than 1 Villa for immediate run, especially if they get the DGW.

Evening Standard had a different take on (presumably) the same comments and said Reg is still a major doubt. Here’s hoping! https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-xi-vs-leicester-predicted-lineup-confirmed-team-news-covid-injury-latest-premier-league-2022-b977395.html

I don’t know how they come to the conclusion that he’s out, when the last news we had was that he was back in training, before their last postponed game.

      Hope they are right though.

I don’t think them comments from Ralf are very positive, can see Ronaldo missing out again. He’s making Brentford sweat but caveating that he’s still a doubt… same as Villa game

haha big dunc has been made Everton's carteaker manager. Again. I wonder if he is caretaker manager for a certain amount of days does he get to legally be manager, like if you squat in a house for a certain period of time.

They should give him a proper go. Might as well, the 'big' names haven't done much + he's a fan favourite. Should be an easy sell.

Any Salah owners out there (who don't have City coverage)? What are you doing?

Mindful we'll know more tomorrow when Egypt have played Sudan.

If they qualify as expected, is it worth just doing Salah - KDB/ Sterling and get him back in when everyone else does?

Do you have 2 ft:s and fear burning one, since you have nothing else to do? Spending 2 ft:s to shift Salah out and in means that you basically need 8 pts to break even.

If you have Salah at this stage I'd just keep. I have him as well as Foden but even if I had no City I wouldn't bother shipping him out now

I think your best case would be if Ronaldo plays then actually, just doesn't get more points then Bruno. He has to get some points though then, just playing is not best for you either I think. In short term it would be good, but not in he long run. Since there are a lot of managers without Ronaldo as well, probably most of those Bruno Captainers. 😉

      Its a gamble.
You know you're going to get 6 points most games from Laporte, whereas you might get 1 or 10 from the others.
I'm not struck on Digne just yet. If he doesn't improve over Everton Digne, Targett is a more than capable deputy.

      Ride the rollercoaster. Go Cresswell.

Marcus Rashford was also absent against Villa and he wasn't spotted with the squad at Manchester Airport, but the squad members use two different entrances, with some parking at the private terminal and others using a separate car park before being ferried to the terminal by bus.

Jadon Sancho, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw were also among those not spotted at the airport, but are all likely to have travelled.

Well, he's got a hip issue, hasn't he? It's not a case of refusing to play. He is motivated.
Anyway, with Gallagher's 9 points staring at me from the bench, I'm in the strange situation of almost hoping my captain Ronaldo doesn't play. Shame I put the vice on Dennis, though. Oh well...
