FPL Q&A: City double-ups, keep or sell Ronaldo and the best ‘third’ Liverpool player

Seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar, who is currently sitting inside the top 30,000 in the world, answers some questions from the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) community ahead of Gameweek 23.

Q: If Raphinha is not affordable, is it worth getting Jack Harrison for £5.5m, maybe for Demarai Gray or other sub-£6.0m players? (@sankrish01)

FPL Gameweek 14 round-up: Tuesday review, injury news and the things we learned

A: Raphinha looked back to his electric best against West Ham, creating seven chances – the most he has managed in a single game this season. Leeds looked more like their old selves from last season, as well, and have a decent run of fixtures over the next few Gameweeks. Harrison has had a poor campaign so far and looks finally to be kicking on but midfield spots are precious at the moment with so many good options. I think you should be making room to get Raphinha by all means possible but if you can’t, then Harrison is a decent shout. Gray’s role is a bit uncertain under Duncan Ferguson and you can’t really go for Gabriel Martinelli with two blanks around the corner.

Q: Thoughts on a Manchester City double in defence rather than attack? And if Bernardo Silva is worth holding or should I make a ‘sideways’ switch to Phil Foden/Kevin De Bruyne? (@AmanTalksFPL)

FPL Gameweek 8 Scout Picks built on Man City triple-up 1

A: Man City are comfortably the league’s best defence and there is much less scope for rotation there compared to their forward positions. Joao Cancelo is a mainstay in most squads and I think pairing him with Aymeric Laporte could be a shrewd move. Yes, he could miss the odd game but he is very unlikely to get a substitute appearance and he has shown significant attacking threat over Ruben Dias.

Bernardo is a tricky one, as you can never guess when a City midfielder is going to haul, but his role in the team has changed significantly with Kevin De Bruyne back. He just isn’t getting into great positions anymore and with so many other better options available in midfield, for both City and otherwise, I would move him on.

Q: Keep or sell Cristiano Ronaldo… (jaded non-Bruno owner)!? (@tanyasharma)

 1

A: Like you, I too had to endure Double Gameweek 22 without Bruno Fernandes and honestly, I was never close to getting him. I couldn’t afford him without a hit and with Cristiano Ronaldo already in the side, there was nobody I really wanted to drop to fund it. These things happen; high variance outcomes are what makes FPL fun and you can be on either side of it.

Ronaldo does have good fixtures – West Ham, Burnley, Southampton, Leeds etc – and the side does appear to be clicking into gear. However, the UEFA Champions League does resume after this international break and I worry about Ronaldo’s minutes around then. It also depends if you need the money to fund getting Salah back. I would hold Ronaldo at least for the West Ham fixture and then assess after the international break. I much prefer Harry Kane to him, as he has more doubles to schedule, no European commitments and a higher surety of minutes.

Q: With Brentford v Manchester United as context, is it worth leaving the captaincy on Cristiano Ronaldo and ignoring Manchester City double-ups in defence or midfield? (@KarnKasturi)

FPL Gameweek 18 round-up: Sunday review, injury news and the things we learned 4

A: I certainly would not advise ignoring Manchester City. Their next three fixtures are against Southampton, Brentford and Norwich, and it would not surprise me to see them score 10+ goals combined over those games. Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne would be my two preferred options, as I worry a bit about Raheem Sterling’s game-time when Riyad Mahrez returns from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Gameweek 24. It is tricky, though, if you need a Ronaldo downgrade to fund buying them this week, which I guess would mean a hit. I like Ronaldo’s fixture and the Saints game is arguably City’s toughest fixture of the next three. I also really like the idea of saving a transfer before the upcoming international break. If you can make a Salah plan while moving Ronaldo on and getting a City midfielder, it is something I would consider. Personally, I have so many fires to put out in my team with Marcos Alonso, Reece James and Tino Livramento, so it is a luxury I can’t really afford.

Q: Who is the best third Liverpool option alongside Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold: Diogo Jota or Andrew Robertson? (@yala_leopard)

Who is the best third Liverpool asset to own during AFCON?

A: Salah is expected to return from the AFCON for Gameweek 24 and with Roberto Firmino now fit, we are back to the usual wheel of rotation for the front three Liverpool spots. Diogo Jota might have established himself as first choice but with the Champions League returning, there is going to be rotation in the front three for Liverpool. Robertson has also returned to form with five assists of late and if I was to pick now, I would definitely lean towards the Scotland international especially given the lack of a reliable third defender option with Chelsea’s blanks.

Q: Will you consider a Wildcard this week? (@Xxxolo8)

Ronaldo's injury and Villa's promising debutants: FPL Gameweek 22 recap 3

A: We discussed the merits of a Wildcard extensively on this week’s episode of The FPL Wire, which you can check out below.

Basically, a lot is still uncertain with regards to the fixture scheduling and Double Gameweeks. We could see the doubles scheduled largely for the last third of the season after Gameweek 30 or we could see them as soon as Gameweek 25; we just don’t know yet. I also don’t like the idea of playing a Wildcard before an international break, where could see injuries for the likes of Raphinha and Philippe Coutinho. I’m hoping for more clarity around the Gameweek 24 deadline so I would not personally consider a Wildcard this week with the current information available.

This is the dilemma for me.

Dennis on paper is a great captaincy option this week, but it's the kind of game that Norwich could end up winning because both teams are as bad as each other.

Those holding wildcards, especially those with all available chips intact: What exactly are you holding wildcards for? Just out of interest, so I can see if we're missing anything. If we were to decide not to wait for huge DGWs later, good gameweek candidates for an earlier wildcard might be:

GW24, so after the coming break, looks good with the return of Mo and the disappearance of Chelsea and the first of two Arsenal blanks looming.

GW26 is another option, giving managers the opportunity to stock up early on any Chelsea players returning to form ahead of an excellent run of fixtures.

Southampton's fixtures look very good from then, so maybe the likes of Broja/JWP.

GW28 is arguably the best of the lot: There is lots of scope to invest in Arsenal, with at least 8 of their next 10 fixtures being against teams who are liable to concede lots of goals.

Spurs have a great fixture in 27 (lee) but if you invest from 28 you can pick their assets up for a nice run until the end of the season. Only Liverpool, maybe Brighton, and the rearranged fixture against Arsenal pose them any real problems in that entire stretch.

The later we get, the more knowledge of DGWs we should have. There may be a good opportunity to Wildcard into massive DGW teams further down the line, but I'm wondering whether they can be covered by FHs.

If you wildcard for 35 for example you are using all your wildcard capital to target a maximum of four gameweeks, one or more of which could be a FH candidate. This is a solid strategy in normal seasons but perhaps less so this time around. Unlike past seasons, we know which teams need to overcome large fixture deficits, with Burnley leading the pack with a massive five, while FA cup postponements may only add 1-2 extra games to an already long list. Normally we don't know much at all about doubles this early in the season, so we are obliged to hold unless major team surgery is required. Unlike previous seasons, too, many of us are in possession of two free hits.

So perhaps we would get more long-term benefit from rejigging sooner rather than later and getting ahead of some big fixture swings, collecting players with known games in hand along the way. If this is the case, timing exactly when to deploy our wildcards could be season-defining.

nor have i really after these few games weeks 🙂 Once AFCON is over teams won't really have a case to postpone.

KDB has been fine as he fought covid early, Most players will have self immunity know which according to an independent study in Isreal, in 680,000 participants (the most vaccinated country in the world, if you had the delta anyway, it is 13x more effective than vaccine immunity, for 6 months. I expect cases to go down now.(I am not anti vax just look at the data other than CDC and MHRA). We don't know how many died BTW, this is just about the survivors.

So planning should become a lot easier, and the choas will slowly end, and cases will fall.

But yes I want to keep Arsenal players if I can up to GW31 despite their blanks, but we will see how things pan out.

If I am looking at a FH in GW30, and cant deadend my team, I may hit it earlier if we have a better idea of schedule, but I am still prepared to take hits for villa next week for eamploe as my team is still in a mess, like a majority of people, I would guess 🙂

I'm all for an end to the chaos! The extreme end of the chaos has been good to me - I have gone from about 600k to about 185k since early December, mainly due to moving towards a strong bench, but it has also been draining and I long for a return to normality.

I'm holding the wildcard and all chips because there hasn't been a decent enough reason to use them yet. In spite of that attitude, red arrows have all been minor and I haven't taken a hit all season. Obviously I want to move on, but I'm really just waiting for the template to slip up. Bruno captainers were very lucky this week, and more power to them. But that could have gone either way, and I want to gamble on an opportunity more concrete than that.

If you're bumping along nicely, of if not nicely, at least not too painfully, I agree it's a good idea to hold fire. My GW5 wildcard derailed my season and I have only regained the lost ground in terms of OR in the last few weeks.

With that said though, if you can look ahead to a fixed point and there are multiple good reasons to pull the trigger, either positive (fixtures, playing returning) or negative (bad fixtures, injuries, blanks) then these are the opportunities to make big gains.

The problem is the unscheduled DGWs. Without knowing what doubles happen when we're guessing. That makes WC a much nicer prospect once we know and can make a more definitive plan to get in DGWs efficiently or else we'll just be taking -8s every week.

This is a good point, though I would say, taking Burnley as probably an extreme example, if we get to about GW30 and they still have 5 games in hand you know those games are going to be played soon, so you can start stocking up (if you want to - it is Burnley!). We know who they have to play, even if we don't know which GWs those fixtures are going to be in.

I hit the WC button yesterday. I went in few gameweeks from 10k to 60k and realised that with current squad I cannot move from the down arrow spiral back to green arrows. I would've needed at least 24 points hit.

This was my biggest downfall last season, not WC'ing early enough and wanting to save the WC for the DGW's. Sometimes your team might be in need of a bigger overhaul if you want to keep going.

I'm looking to wildcard in GW28 and will dead-end my team to manage the blanks in GW27 (ie Salah to KDB or some such). I am targeting GW30 for my first FH, so my WC will be able to focus on adapting to the fixture swing and residual DGW opportunities - I think there will still be a few before we get around to FA Cup rearrangements. I will hit the TC button when Salah gets his double (hopefully GW26 but who knows), and probably look to FH in DGW36 (too much rotation for BB I think), and look for opportunities for exploit the BB and 2nd FH chips.

I am planning for week 34. Navigate 27, fh 30 and fh 37. I should add that I have no interest in Chelsea from here on in unless something changes dramatically

      WC31

FH27, dead-end into 30, pick up a playing squad full of doublers.

I just pulled the trigger. Covid cases seem to be declining to the point where there shouldn't be many more cancellations. Found some good tools for figuring out when upcoming DGWs are most likely (shout out to Black Box team for this). Using FH1 for sure in BGW27 so hoping I'll be fine to navigate just one blank for Arsenal assets. Made 11 changes that I'm really happy with. New team:
      Sa Sanchez
TAA Cancelo Robertson Ait Nouri Tierney
      KDB Sterling Bowen Raphinha Martinelli
      Watkins Edouard Broja

Usually I have a good chip plan in place by now

This season all I know is that I'll free hit in the blanks of 27 and 30

And hopefully wildcard after that to set up for some doubles and a bb

Ideally, it's GW31 for me. But my squad is far from ideal - in fact, it's an almighty mess. Even though I've kept back plenty of cash to get Salah for ESR in GW24, it's still a mess. I'm tempted to go for it over the International Break.

Gw28 is what I'm aiming for at present. Enabling me to deal with the blanks in 27 by dead ending. Then in 28 target Chelsea and arsenal (fixtures are great plus will have doubles) and the other doubling teams. Hopefully will give 11 gameweeks of benefit with 2fh, a TC and a BB to be deployed in that period too.

I love the post, great considerations.

For me personally it depends how far you're away from setting your team up to be in place for the rest of the season. I think I'm 6 transfers out which actually isn't a huge amount if I'm taking a few hits here and there to navigate surprises.

As you say, I think the FHs will be in place to hit home the big DGWs, but there are teams which have 3+ games to be rescheduled so that alone won't be enough to do it.

I think the time to have made an early move has almost gone, Salah will be back soon and will be perma captain again, so I think you'd want to use your 2x FHs and WC to hit the three big DGWs which will come around and then use BB/TC in combination with the WC somewhere.

I think time and information are key though.

Thanks Brains! You may well be right on the correct early move having passed us by, though I would say I think there are other turning points in the season which we could we could target.

I think if the replies to this thread have shown anything it's just how much variability there is this season.

In any season, answers will always fit into:

1.) Played it already: team was a mess
2.) Playing it soon: team is a mess
3.) Going to play it later but before the doubles
4.) Going to specifically target the doubles

But in a normal season I would usually expect far more people answering 4.). It just shows how different people's teams are, how much ground they see themselves having to make up and, uniquely, the effect of the extra FH chip this year.

Definitely, I think a few of us gambled with a BB early on which now in hindsight was a waste so I'm a bit protective over the deployment of the rest. I feel like I need to get to a stage where most have used a chip so I know it's fairly equal going forward.

In terms of the WC though, it goes back to 3) for me, if they line up with the squad I want for the rest of season (and I'm still a few transfers out), I'll go for it. If not then I'll use it to attack where I can.

I feel like the later you WC, the more you can pack your team with DGWers that you know you won't need to sell to facilitate DGWers on the short term, negating the decisions of your WC.

Great thread guys. From the wide breadth of answers it looks to me like its going to be very difficult for a strong template to form and the team dependent nature of using the w/c will be key. At this point i'm not very confident in my ability to nail it all as i struggle with planning when games are being announced at short notice. Hoping for some clarity gained from a hopeful improving of the general situation.

So hard deciding to wildcard or not... Livramento and Rudiger have got to go. Used Free Hit last week (awful result) so still have Salah sitting there for another week or two. Other than that the rest of the team is "alright" and should start (except maybe Jesus) so I could get through on free transfers or just taking a hit but I still think I could improve every position if I did WC...

        Currently my team is:

        De Gea, Guita,

        TAA, Rudiger, Cancelo, Semedo, Livramento
        Salah, Bernardo, Raphina, Gallagher, Lazini
        Jesus, Pukki, Dennis

And like.... it's... fine? But I also look at every player there except maybe Cancelo/TAA and can think of a better alternative. Also just very hard to get excited about some of them - De Gea, Bernardo, Semedo, Raphina, Gallagher, Dennis etc even Lanzini's madness the other week was outdone by Bowen.

    A) means I can’t afford a straight Bruno -> Salah switch next week

    Ramsdale
    Trent, Cancelo, Keane
    Bruno, Jota, Bowen, Gray
    CR7, Antonio, King

    DDG, Lamptey, Dawson, Brownhill

Well done to warby84 who made it three wins in the last four Gameweeks for the Community over the Scout Picks with a 67 to 55 victory.

If you fancy your chances of continuing the Community's good form, I’m after two champions; one for GW23 and one for GW24.

How it works: a member of the Community will be selected to go head-to-head against the Scout Picks panel of Neale, Tom, Sam and Az each GW.

The Community Member who has the largest winning margin across the 38 weeks takes home a £100 Amazon voucher and entry to our Mods and Cons League.

The current leader is THFC4LIFE, who set a 26-point winning margin in GW19.

If chosen, you will have a budget of £83m to select 11 players but outside of that standard FPL rules apply - you need to use a normal FPL formation and with a limit of 3 players from a team. And remember to pick a captain and vice-captain.

If you’re interested in applying, email me at will@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk with the subject heading “Community Picks”. Include your FFS username and FPL Team ID and I’ll select two champions at random from the entrants for GWs 23 and 24.

This season there is a draw for a champion and a sub, just in case the champion is unable to get their selection in on time. The sub then becomes the champion for the following GW.

The champion will be picked this evening (Thursday), so make sure to enter by then. If selected you then have until Friday morning to send in your team, but tweaks are allowed right up to the deadline (in case of injuries announced in the press conferences or fixture postponements).

The Scout Picks are currently 15-7 up on the Community.

Have a bit of a benching headache this week.

Thoughts on who to bench from the below? Also have 1 FT and was thinking of using it to go Alonso > Laporte.

    Ramsdale
    Cancelo - TAA - Tierney
    Jota - Foden - Mount - Bowen
    King - Dennis - Ronaldo

    Ramsdale - Gray - Alonso - Coufal

Should I start Gray/Alonso (or Laporte!) instead?
