FPL team news: Gameweek 23 injury news on Leeds, Livramento and more

Thursday was a relatively quiet day on the pre-match press conference front, with just five managers facing the media.

Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, is scheduled to face reporters immediately after the EFL Cup semi-final second-leg tie against Liverpool on Thursday night, although the Gameweek 23 section of that conference call will likely be embargoed until Friday or later.

We’ve got from the fitness latest from Leeds United, Southampton, Watford, Brentford and Norwich City in this round-up – and was that a cheeky Double Gameweek 25 giveaway from Ralph Hasenhuttl?

SOUTHAMPTON

First, the injury news from the Saints.

Alex McCarthy (hamstring), Tino Livramento (knee) and Will Smallbone (calf) remain out for the south coast club but are the only reported absentees, with Moi Elyounoussi (illness) and Theo Walcott (illness) rejoining training this week.

“Tino [Livramento] and Will Smallbone are the guys who are not training with the team, everybody else is training. Some coming back after the Covid-19 quarantine and back in training. So we have, in the moment, 20 outfield players on the pitch.

“Alex [McCarthy] is still out, not available in the moment after his injury. He still takes time to come back.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

As for the possible Double Gameweek 25 hint, Hasenhuttl may well have miscounted or could have been merely suggesting a hypothetical situation (hence “can be”) whereby their outstanding fixture against Newcastle gets accommodated in mid-February.

But it’s still a quote worth reporting, as it wouldn’t be the first time that a manager or club website has given the game away with regards to a Double Gameweek.

“A good time for recovery but also a good time for preparing for a very intense time, because it can be that we have five games in two weeks then.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl on the winter break

As we’re already down the rabbit hole of conjecture, Saints’ run could look something like this if there was any substance to their head coach’s comments:

  • Feb 5: Coventry (FA Cup)
  • Feb 9: Spurs (GW24)
  • Feb 12: Man Utd (GW25)
  • Feb 16: (Newcastle in DGW25??)
  • Feb 19: Everton (GW26)

LEEDS UNITED

Junior Firpo (hamstring) and Adam Forshaw (hamstring) have joined Kalvin Phillips (hamstring), Liam Cooper (hamstring), Jamie Shackleton (Achilles), Charlie Cresswell (shoulder) and Sam Greenwood (knee) in the Leeds physio room ahead of the clash with Newcastle, while Patrick Bamford has picked up yet another problem – a foot injury, this time – just as he was about to recover from a recent muscle issue.

Marcelo Bielsa does have some fresh reinforcements, however, with Diego Llorente back from suspension and Tyler Roberts (muscle) and Joe Gelhardt (ankle) anticipated to make sooner-than-expected recoveries in time for the Magpies’ visit.

“Forshaw and Firpo have muscular injuries and Bamford has a new injury at the bottom of his foot. He’s overcome his muscular problems.

“It’s likely that for the game on the weekend we’re going to count on Tyler Roberts, Joe Gelhardt and Rodrigo Moreno. So the players out of the squad in that position are going to be Patrick [Bamford] and Greenwood.” – Marcelo Bielsa

WATFORD

Kwadwo Baah (ankle), Nicolas Nkoulou (hamstring), Peter Etebo (thigh) and Ismaila Sarr (knee) remain on the injury list ahead of Watford’s relegation six-pointer against Norwich, while Imran Louza, William Troost-Ekong and Adam Masina are all still away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Hornets reported no fresh injury concerns in their Gameweek 23 medical bulletin.

BRENTFORD

Thomas Frank confirmed that everybody who was in Brentford’s squad for their defeat to Manchester United last night will be available in Gameweek 23.

Josh Dasilva (hip) is still around four weeks away from a return, with David Raya (knee), Zanka (muscle) and Charlie Goode (hamstring) also on the injury list.

NORWICH CITY

Dean Smith has confirmed that Tim Krul will miss Friday night’s trip to Watford having picked up a shoulder injury in the last match against Everton. The extent of the injury is not yet known, with the Netherlands international awaiting specialist test results.

“Tim Krul is out. He obviously hurt his shoulder, the ACL joints, in the last minute of the Everton win. Unfortunately we lose him. I am not sure on the time with him at the moment.” – Dean Smith

Lukas Rupp (hamstring), Andrew Omobamidele (back), Mathias Normann (pelvis) and Billy Gilmour (hamstring) remain on the injury list until Gameweek 24, while Christoph Zimmermann will feature for the under-23s on Friday as he builds up match fitness after five months on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

Max Aarons (knock), Kenny McLean (illness) and Brandon Williams (cramp) have all been passed fit, however,

“Billy (Gilmour), (Mathias) Normann, (Lukas) Rupp and (Andrew) Omobamidele should all be back, I am hoping, for the next game which is Wolves [in the FA Cup].” – Dean Smith

    Hello!

If no DGW and Arsenal game is on, would you just sort Alonso?

    Foster
    TAA/Cancelo/Alonso*
    Jota/Maddison/Bowen/Martinelli
    CR7/Antonio/Dennis

    DDG/Gray/Coufal/Duffy

Either way - Villa have some nice fixtures if you're looking at Digne or Cash. Everton could have a BD bounce but after that it's smooth sailing

Since you don't have Salah and team is fine for this GW, I would probably lean towards saving FT

I'm down to two possible transfers for next week. 1 FT, 3.1 ITB.

    Sánchez // Foster
Trent Cancelo Reguilón // Coufal Livramento*
Jota Mount Silva Bowen // Brownhill
    Ronaldo Antonio King

    (A) Brownhill → Coutinho
    (B) Brownhill → Raphinha
    (C) roll transfer
    (D) something else

My plan is Mount and Ronaldo → Salah and Watkins next week. Rolling a transfer this week avoids a hit, but making one improves my squad. Any advice?

I’m definitely keeping Bowen and getting Salah back! The decision I have to make is whether I want Salah, KDB and Kane or just Salah and one other but with a deeper squad.

Once Salah is back in the picture and covers captaincy, is KDB worth keeping a hold of when there are a lot of good and cheaper midfield options?

I have a feeling KDB is going to be on top form now he has fully recovered from Covid but you are right to point out that I’d probably always captain Salah

I think I need to keep KDB until at least Norwich in GW25 but I’m not going to wait until GW26 to buy Salah unless a minor injury in the AFCON saves the day!

...although both equally as good. I would pick Laporte for two reasons. He's cheaper & if Stones (which is not very often) starts he replaces Dias.

This is a report on the leaders of various Fantasy Football Scout FPL mini-leagues and community competitions after Gameweek 22, as well as on the latest update to the FFS Live Hall of Fame, together with a warning that to avoid being hacked like one of the FFS Cup quarter-finalists we should all use strong passwords and not use the same password on different sites.

    ** FFS OPEN MINI-LEAGUE

Srecko Kurtovic leads for a 14th week in the Fantasy Football Scout mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/68048/standings/c, league code gsnskx) and is now fourth overall, only seven points behind world number one Daniel Masson-Abraham.

    ** FFS COMMUNITY MEMBERS MINI-LEAGUE

Daniel Masson-Abraham leads for a 16th week in the Fantasy Football Scout Members mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/361/standings/c) and is also the WORLD NUMBER ONE for a ninth week, but he captained Ronaldo instead of Fernandes and his lead at the top has been reduced to a single point as a result.
This league is also open to all and the league code is visible in the widget on the FFS Home Page when signed in, but only those with a registered FFS account (paid or free) will be eligible for prizes.

    **FFS CUPS

Gameweek 22 saw the quarter-finals of the FFS Open Cup (https://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/cup/26/rounds/8/).
The highest ranked manager, Matjes_taet, was the victim of a hacker who made 1000 transfers to his team with the result that, instead of scoring 97 points from his Free Hit and winning his match, his rank has plummeted to nearly nine million. A warning to us all to use strong passwords and not to use the same password on different sites.
The winners who go through to next week’s semi-finals were Fusen (106,079th), TallestJohn (55,831st), Restored (1,020,067th) and rocco10 (22,357th)

It also saw the quarter-finals of the FFS Members Cup (https://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/cup/27/rounds/7/).
The winners going through to next week’s semi-finals were alblack12 (40,245th), Scrumper (8,642nd), Mingo (1,504th) and thalliday1985 (8,014th). alblack12 is Al Black from FFS H2H League 1, who is 235th in the recently updated FFS Live Hall of Fame.

These FFS Cups are organised by Fantasy Football Scout and should not be confused with any similarly named League Cups listed on FPL’s Leagues & Cups page.

    ** LAST MAN STANDING

The highest scorer after hits in Gameweek 22 of TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing competition (‘LMS’, see https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/26234/standings/c and https://torresmagic.webs.com/lmsupdate.htm) was Richard Harte (Debauchy) with a Bench Boosted 108, even though his bench only scored a grand total of one point! This followed a Wildcard for 87 points in Gameweek 21 and he has now risen to 4,768th overall. His best previous finish was 604th back in 2014/15.

The safety score for Gameweek 22 was 47, with 11 new teams joining, 77 to be removed and 666 going through to Gameweek 23. LMS is now closed to new entries.

    ** FFS HEAD-TO-HEAD LEAGUES

Some of the scores in the results tables for MIR’s FFS Head-to-Head Leagues (https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/head-to-head-leagues/) have been adjusted to correct errors in the results recorded for Gameweek 15.

In League 1, Martin Stubbs lost to Justin Speigel in Gameweek 22, and Cak Juris lost too. The result is that Justin is now in second place, ten points behind Martin.

The highest scorers in the Head-to-Head Leagues are now Michael Cahill in League 5, Tom Ayers and Sebestyén Balázs in League 7, Rohan Chatarjee and Ciaran Collins in League 8, and Viktor Torkelsson, Hampus Olesund and Sean Graham in League 9, all of whom have 60 points out of a possible 66.

** MODS & CONS AND FFS FAMILY

Chaz Phillips (Az) leads for a ninth week in the FFS Mods & Cons mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/366/standings/c). He has risen to 7,135th overall and is 392nd in the FFS Live Hall of Fame.

Obay Eid (FPL_Milanista) leads for a 19th week in the FFS Family mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/342/standings/c). He is now 142nd overall and 42nd in the FFS Live Hall of Fame.

    ** TOPS AND VETS

Tabz Hashimi leads for a tenth week in my Top 10k Any Season mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/1378/standings/c, league code kgmryk) and is now 113th overall.

Simon MacNair is the new leader in my Multiple Top 10k Finishes mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/1386/standings/c, league code 03t1fd), which is for teams with two or more top 10,000 finishes, and has risen to 716th overall. He has had four previous top 10k finishes and is 240th in the FFS Live Hall of Fame.

Jonathan Tan leads for a third week in PDM’s Top 1k ANY season mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/10031/standings/c, league code 01ef8y) and is now 656th overall.

He also leads for a fifth week in Jed Alexander (Livinginapool)’s Top 100 Any Season mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/194472/standings/c, league code pztxjt).

2018/19 FPL champion Adam Levy has regained the lead from Jon Reeson (Westfield Irons) in Simon March’s FPL Champions League (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/2594/standings/c). Adam previously led from Gameweek 8 to Gameweek 10, but Jon had led for the other 18 weeks.

John Walsh is the new leader in Chaballer’s Hall of Fame Top 1k mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/39527/standings/c, league code 1zpaad) and has risen to 3,436th overall. He came 2,443rd in 2019/20 and is 401st in the FFS Live Hall of Fame.

Callum Croal is the new leader in Skooldaze’s FPL Vets 2006 or before mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/25315/standings/c, league code hz9bz2). He has had two top 100 finishes plus four more in the top 10k, and is 49th in the FFS Live Hall of Fame.

    ** JANUARY TO MAY LEAGUE

David Arblaster from FFS H2H League 1 is the new leader in my January to May League (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/1484/standings/c, league code fy0acw) after following his Wildcard for 92 points in Gameweek 21 with a Bench Boost for 113(-4) in Gameweek 22, and has risen from 484k in Gameweek 20 to 116k now. He came 864th in 2018/19 and has had three other top 4k finishes; he is 776th in the FFS Live Hall of Fame.
The top ten in this mini-league all captained Bruno Fernandes in Gameweek 22, their scores varying from 84 to 121.

** FFS LIVE HALL OF FAME

The FFS Live Hall of Fame (which, unlike the FFS Career Hall of Fame, can only be viewed by Premium Members) was updated again after Gameweek 21. 63,112 managers participating in the Fantasy Football Scout and Fantasy Football Scout Members mini-leagues are now ranked and the new top ten, with FFS Career Hall of Fame positions in brackets, is:
    1(3) Finn Sollie.
    2(1) Fábio Borges.
    3(2) Tom Stephenson.
    4(-) Brusdal Brusdal.
5(7) Jon Ballantyne (Mad Moose FC).
    6(15) Scott McIrvine.
    7(10) Mark Hurst.
    8(20) Richard Clarke (https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/10/10/meet-the-manager-4-richard-clarke/).
    9(14) James Cooper.
    10(26) Matt Corbidge.
Brusdal is a newcomer to the Hall of Fame. He has had six top 10k finishes, three of them in the top 500.
All ten of these managers were in the top 20k at the time of the update, but Finn (183rd) was the only one in the top thousand.
