Dennis suspended for second Gameweek 23 fixture but Foster may return

Emmanuel Dennis (£6.1m) was sent off in Watford’s opening match of Double Gameweek 23, as Norwich City frustrated the hosts and grabbed the win thanks to a Josh Sargent (£5.4m) brace and Juraj Kucka (£5.5m) own goal.

Our Scout Notes article reflects on the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the fixture.

DENNIS SUSPENDED FOR BURNLEY

In a hugely disappointing night for his owners, Emmanuel Dennis was sent off for two bookable offences and will now miss Watford’s second fixture of Double Gameweek 23 in a fortnights time.

As a result, he ends the Gameweek on -1 points, and -2 for those unlucky enough to hand him the captaincy.

Above: top 10k Double Gameweek 23 captaincy stats, via LiveFPL

Throughout the match, the Hornets’ failed to show any real quality, especially in the final-third, with their best attempt arriving via Moussa Sissoko (£4.4m).

Of Watford’s attackers, Joao Pedro (£5.4m) was once again the busiest of the trio, ending the match with five goal attempts compared to Josh King’s (£5.8m) two, and has now outshot his more popular team-mate by 11 to six over their last two matches.

Above: Watford’s xG shot map v Norwich City in Double Gameweek 23

Following tonight’s defeat, Claudio Ranieri has now lost 10 out of his 13 Premier League games in charge, whilst Watford remain the only side in England’s top four divisions without a clean sheet.

“Maybe we played better 10 v 11. It is very important the lesson Norwich gave us, they played as a team, we played as individuals. That is no good. Now I have to choose the players that want to fight hard for Watford. You have to play 11 v 11.

I believe in my reaction and the players’ reaction. It is not possible to continue in this way because this way we go straight into the Championship. I want the players with heart and mentality who play for the team.

I speak every day with the board and we are all together. I believe in these players, the players who want to believe. Who doesn’t want to believe – go home.

The new players played very well had understand my philosophy. Some players don’t want to understand my philosophy – I want to play straight away, no dribble dribble, shoot straight away. We have to react immediately.” – Claudio Ranieri speaking after the game

FOSTER OUT WITH COVID

Ben Foster (£4.1m), who is owned by 18.5% of FPL managers, was a surprise absentee from Watford’s matchday squad tonight, as he missed out having contracted Covid.

Prior to kick-off, the Hornets’ had revealed he and Craig Cathcart (£4.3m) were out due to illness, with Foster later taking to social media to confirm his absence:

However, Watford’s second part of their double-header is still over two weeks away, which does at least hand Foster plenty of time to recover.

SARGENT BRACE FOR RESURGENT NORWICH

Norwich ended a six-game losing run after beating Everton last weekend, and followed that up tonight with a convincing win at Watford which has seen them move out of the relegation zone.

The Canaries’ had been a team to target over the festive period, as they conceded a whopping 14 Premier League goals in December.

However, Dean Smith has since turned to a 4-4-2 formation which seems be getting the best out of the players at his disposal, and as a result, will now be looking ahead with renewed optimism ahead of their Gameweek 24 clash against Crystal Palace.

Above: Norwich City’s average position map v Watford in Double Gameweek 23, featuring Josh Sargent (no. 24), Adam Idah (35), Teemu Pukki (22) and Milot Rashica (17)

Josh Sargent was the unlikely hero on the night, with his first and second goals of the campaign, whilst Teemu Pukki (£5.8m) collected the assist for his opener, his first attacking return since Gameweek 14.

After the match, Smith also revealed that Tim Krul (£4.5m) could be out for up to six weeks with his shoulder injury, with budget goalkeeper Angus Gunn (£4.0m) set to continue deputising in his absence.

“When you go 3-0 up in a game, I expected us to see it out. it was not a pretty affair from us, we knew it would not be but we started the game off really well. The game got away from us in the first-half but we spoke about it at half time, we were good without the ball today and not so good with. We are in a results business, we needed the result today and it certainly gives everyone a lift.” – Dean Smith

Watford XI: Bachmann, Femenia (Kucka 89), Kabasele, Samir, Kamara (Sema 84), Kayembe, Cleverley (Cucho 59), Sissoko, Dennis, Pedro, King

Norwich City XI: Gunn, Aarons, Hanley, Gibson, Williams, Sargent, Lees-Melou, Sorensen (McLean 21), Rashica (Placheta 90+6), Idah, Pukki (Byram 87)

My bus cap is Cancelo, but I now have my head turned towards Bowen vs this version of Watford. Maybe a repeat of the recent haul, but better?

For folks who *almost* used the WC or were tempted to....

When do you reckon you'll play it?

I'm assuming some DGW fixtures will be announced during the break. This GW was a great time to jump on Man City, get rid of Chelsea + Spurs, among other teams to bring in (Villa, possibly Everton if you fancy a manager bounce).

GW 28 is a great time for basically the opposite: bringing Chelsea + Arsenal back, possibly offload 1 or 2 city assets, offload Man Utd as well.

Are you basing the 2nd WC around the DGW announcements or have a set date in mind?

Kind of regret not playing it this week, as I may be waiting until GW 28 now, with a weak side of DGW punts.

I'm in the WC21 camp. It's been good so far, in the big picture. Just many annoyances in the microcosms of each GW

I'll still recommend WC24. Ronaldo + Gray/Ramsey can go for Lukaku + Maddison in GW28, for free. Then Lamptey to James/Alonso for free in GW29, and then build towards BB36

Quick draft, which will unsurprisingly be very similar to my team:

        Sa Sanchez
        TAA Cancelo Ait-Nouri Digne Lamptey
        Salah Foden Coutinho Bowen Ramsey
        Ronaldo DCL Broja

        3-5-2

You could go Watkins + Gray over DCL + Ramsey, but I personally prefer these instead, especially since DCL is more clinical than Watkins (forgive his pen miss)

What's throwing me off is that I wouldn't want any Man Utd or Brighton on a current WC, and they look to have that double in 25. Although when more DGW announcements are made, they may just be 2 of quite a few teams with doubles. Ronaldo really hurt the rank last GW, but two home games for his DGW 25 look really good

This WC sets you up until GW30, at least. It\s not for individual GWs, but a big picture (check https://www.livefpl.net/myteam/)

Broja, Ait-Nouri/Digne, Lamptey and Sanchez benched for GW24. That's two good subs and one BGW whose fixture run starts in GW25

Ronaldo's fixtures are beyond the DGWs: GWs 24 to 27, then Lukaku/Vardy/Kane from GW28

Chasing individual DGWs with multiple transfers might hurt

I feel comfortable shipping off Ron to Watkins to make way for Salah here soon-ish obviously, but...now i have KDB. And you can do both tbh. But, the wrench in the works is when Son comes back...

Yep. KDB/Salah are the premiums to have. Ronnie may return from time to time but he doesn't jump out as a captain option for me which is a must for 10m+ players

I think the cheaper mids can keep up with premium mids. Foden for KDB, Maddison for Son (similar fixture runs), then there are Salah, Bowen and Coutinho. This is why I have enough funds for a premium forward, with no intention of capping 'em

Just my style, though. I understand that there'll be many variations over the next few GWs, or maybe some clear cheaper candidates up front. As things stand, not many strikers are more attractive to me than that Ronaldo/Lukaku fixture run. Again, no plan to cap 'em

I mean it. Salah & KDB (which I am gonna have, most likely) makes Son unnecessary for me. And with no premium forwards demanding a spot, will easily have the cash for it without unbalancing team.

To be honest that's my exact thinking. Tried a WC draft just as an exercise to see what it would look like....and i really liked it.

Son is always on my radar, but if you're not playing, dude...well, these things happen.

Nice, but who do you think Jota replaces here to start regularly, when all are fully fit and available: Salah + Firmino + Mane?

        Bobby Chompers (Firmino)

One of the most intriguing questions for me. Not sure Klopp turns his back on Jota tbh. I mean, it's shades right? They'll both play, depth is crucial, yadda yadda. We all know what Firmino respresents in Klopp's system, which Jota doesn't reproduce. But i think sometimes the best ability is availability, and i think Klopp trusts Jota to show up and produce. It's not that Firmino can't but...he's gotta be fit.

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years
          2 years, 2 months ago

Yeah, Firmino's problem this season has been availability. He's still been the same Firmino when available

I know Klopp can be brutal though. But at least he can rest Salah and Mane more often now, especially with UCL in the mix

I think I'll have just the one Liverpool attacker in Salah, and then pick from the big pool of nailed midfielders who are cheaper than Jota

          1. Gunneryank
            • 2 Years
            2 years, 2 months ago

You make a salient point. There's a part of me that might...might...want to sacrifice him for Salah and use those funds and the funds from Ronaldo to have say, KDB and Robertson and Laporte...for example 🙂

          2. bench boost for every gamew…
            • 7 Years
            2 years, 2 months ago

I think people need to reevaluate that old perception on Liverpool and Firmino and the two wingers. Firstly, Firmino is not as effective as he has been or at least can not do the same level 3 times a week, Mane is still at a high level, but Klopp has shown he is willing to bench him too. JOTA represents a totally different aspect to the front three, when he plays he is always involved even if his allround game is not the best, and he got energy and a directness in his play.
And he is 7.5 mid and plays as striker for the best attacking team, and even a cameo 20 minutes could produce goals, to me thats what you want.
CL could be key, As the league us probably over you would think Klopp wants that.
But it will change and suddenly sone dgw comes and the state of play changes. Jota is the only player i have had since gw 1. I think thats my best decision this year so far.

I think he starts today. If not, definitely GW24. There's only so much time it takes for a player to build match fitness, and most of it is by getting minutes on the pitch

Even players returning from long injuries have had one bench appearance, another week of training, then a start. The usual delay is in getting to that bench appearance. See Justin as a recent example

I had King - but honestly never considered him. Does not seem on form. Plus I had better single gameweek options IMO.
It was Tierney v Cancelo for me.
Went for Cancelo because unsure of how Arsenal and Burnley will pan out after both sides had a break and a long break.

    3.9 Broja Sargent Alt-Nouri

How would you fit Salah in this team for next week? Or should I just hold KDB for now...

    Ddg
    TAA, Cancelo, Dawson
    KDB, Foden, Jota, Bowen, Gray
    Watkins, Antonio

    Foster, Dennis, Alonso, Livra

    1FT, $1.0 ITB

Thinking of holding off getting Salah until GW26 when they have NOR (H). KDB next 2 are BRE (H) and NOR (A), so he could easily keep up with Salah during that time, when he has LEI (H) and BUR (A).

Can you downgrade Alonso And Antonio and upgrade Gray?

      Have both.

      1. andre_c
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 2 months ago

I can't afford it with gray but I could If I upgrade Foden/Jota. Doing Alonso, Antonio > Ait Nouri, Broja only gives $10.3 in bank when Gray is removed 🙁

    2. Gunneryank

I think holding KDB is fine. I think maybe the funds keeping you from Salah are Foden and Jota, which I'm proposing be sacrificed. I'm contemplating a non-premium forward line, KDB, Salah, and Bowen, with maybe Raphinha and Ramsey possibly. Or thereabouts.

Sarr back for WAT versus West Ham in GW24? They need a creative force in midfield - Sissoko is stealing WAT's money with the way he plays.

Just been watching the game. WAT were awful. Had more GA but they tended to be off target. Sissoko isn't a finisher. Hard to see WAT staying up with Ranieri....or anyone for that matter.

    DGW25 for Bruno.
DGW26 for Kane. Possibly Salah too.

Only speculations atm but be prepared to use FTslWC to navigate those changes.

Any early ideas for this team with 1 FT and 0.4M itb?

    Ramsdale
    TAA Cancelo Tierney
    Foden Jota Bowen Son
    Ronaldo Antonio Dennis

    Foster Williams Mbeumo Alonso

Salah will come in for Ronaldo at some point, but with likely United DGW25 I'm not in a rush.
Son I think is a keep if he looks like returning after IB.
    Looks an easy save this?
