Dennis suspended for second Gameweek 23 fixture but Foster may return

Emmanuel Dennis (£6.1m) was sent off in Watford’s opening match of Double Gameweek 23, as Norwich City frustrated the hosts and grabbed the win thanks to a Josh Sargent (£5.4m) brace and Juraj Kucka (£5.5m) own goal.

Our Scout Notes article reflects on the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the fixture.

DENNIS SUSPENDED FOR BURNLEY

In a hugely disappointing night for his owners, Emmanuel Dennis was sent off for two bookable offences and will now miss Watford’s second fixture of Double Gameweek 23 in a fortnights time.

As a result, he ends the Gameweek on -1 points, and -2 for those unlucky enough to hand him the captaincy.

Above: top 10k Double Gameweek 23 captaincy stats, via LiveFPL

Throughout the match, the Hornets’ failed to show any real quality, especially in the final-third, with their best attempt arriving via Moussa Sissoko (£4.4m).

Of Watford’s attackers, Joao Pedro (£5.4m) was once again the busiest of the trio, ending the match with five goal attempts compared to Josh King’s (£5.8m) two, and has now outshot his more popular team-mate by 11 to six over their last two matches.

Above: Watford’s xG shot map v Norwich City in Double Gameweek 23

Following tonight’s defeat, Claudio Ranieri has now lost 10 out of his 13 Premier League games in charge, whilst Watford remain the only side in England’s top four divisions without a clean sheet.

“Maybe we played better 10 v 11. It is very important the lesson Norwich gave us, they played as a team, we played as individuals. That is no good. Now I have to choose the players that want to fight hard for Watford. You have to play 11 v 11.

I believe in my reaction and the players’ reaction. It is not possible to continue in this way because this way we go straight into the Championship. I want the players with heart and mentality who play for the team.

I speak every day with the board and we are all together. I believe in these players, the players who want to believe. Who doesn’t want to believe – go home.

The new players played very well had understand my philosophy. Some players don’t want to understand my philosophy – I want to play straight away, no dribble dribble, shoot straight away. We have to react immediately.” – Claudio Ranieri speaking after the game

FOSTER OUT WITH COVID

Ben Foster (£4.1m), who is owned by 18.5% of FPL managers, was a surprise absentee from Watford’s matchday squad tonight, as he missed out having contracted Covid.

Prior to kick-off, the Hornets’ had revealed he and Craig Cathcart (£4.3m) were out due to illness, with Foster later taking to social media to confirm his absence:

However, Watford’s second part of their double-header is still over two weeks away, which does at least hand Foster plenty of time to recover.

SARGENT BRACE FOR RESURGENT NORWICH

Norwich ended a six-game losing run after beating Everton last weekend, and followed that up tonight with a convincing win at Watford which has seen them move out of the relegation zone.

The Canaries’ had been a team to target over the festive period, as they conceded a whopping 14 Premier League goals in December.

However, Dean Smith has since turned to a 4-4-2 formation which seems be getting the best out of the players at his disposal, and as a result, will now be looking ahead with renewed optimism ahead of their Gameweek 24 clash against Crystal Palace.

Above: Norwich City’s average position map v Watford in Double Gameweek 23, featuring Josh Sargent (no. 24), Adam Idah (35), Teemu Pukki (22) and Milot Rashica (17)

Josh Sargent was the unlikely hero on the night, with his first and second goals of the campaign, whilst Teemu Pukki (£5.8m) collected the assist for his opener, his first attacking return since Gameweek 14.

After the match, Smith also revealed that Tim Krul (£4.5m) could be out for up to six weeks with his shoulder injury, with budget goalkeeper Angus Gunn (£4.0m) set to continue deputising in his absence.

“When you go 3-0 up in a game, I expected us to see it out. it was not a pretty affair from us, we knew it would not be but we started the game off really well. The game got away from us in the first-half but we spoke about it at half time, we were good without the ball today and not so good with. We are in a results business, we needed the result today and it certainly gives everyone a lift.” – Dean Smith

Watford XI: Bachmann, Femenia (Kucka 89), Kabasele, Samir, Kamara (Sema 84), Kayembe, Cleverley (Cucho 59), Sissoko, Dennis, Pedro, King

Norwich City XI: Gunn, Aarons, Hanley, Gibson, Williams, Sargent, Lees-Melou, Sorensen (McLean 21), Rashica (Placheta 90+6), Idah, Pukki (Byram 87)

I was on for my best season ever up until Christmas, since then my OR has plummeted largely due to taking hits for captains

    GW19 -4 captained Ronaldo. 1 point x 2
    GW20 -4 captained Salah 0 points x 2
    GW22 -4 captained Ronaldo 2 points x 2
    GW23 -4 captained Dennis -1 point x 2

    Net points -12 (2 points x2, less 4 hits)

GW21 was a good decision 21 x 2 - 2 hits for Bowen but even if that is taken into account I'm still averaging just 2.2 points per captain score since Christmas (23 points x 2 - 24 in hits divided by 10 (5x2) = 2.2 points

If it is a game of luck, then why do some players perform well consistently. It is a mixture of judgement, skill and luck, not luck on it's own

          I agree, it's a game of judgement.

Those in the hall of fame have a better basis for making good decisions.

I think patience is an important element too.

Its a game of trying to with fiftheeb players to gain as much coincidences on the actual fields to fall in your favor, do you need to have skill to judge what you see and read (if you go into stats), and since its 38 gws it will also test the ability to plan, and change accordingly to what evolves.
Then there is the element of luck in some aspect, As each game carries its own coincidences that you can not control. But in the aspect of luck its always IMO the isolated factual happening, like that gw you chose between King and a Dennis, where King hits post and then Dennis scores on the following corner, thats an element of luck, in the Sense that the coincidence on the field gets a very big gap in outcome from a very coincidental event.

It is largely a game of understanding probabilities. Some people confuse that with pure luck.

It's skill and engagement up to a point, but when there are genuine 50/50 calls and the wrong side of it costs you 20, 30, 40 points each time, that's luck.

It probably wasn't a genuine 50-50 and you consistently called it wrong in that case.

It's about gut feel and the information you have. Sometimes you run good, sometimes you run bad. That's life. You can make the best percentage decisions all you like, but good decisions don't always mean good outcomes, and some "wrong" decisions end up being more brutal than others.

But gut feel probably isn't a 50-50 call.

It's internal bias or whatever they call it. Confirmation bias?

Of course some calls can genuinely be 50/50 (or near enough). Its FPL where we try to predict a sport with big swings on small margins, not a quiz with right and wrong answers. And we all know that right decisions can sometimes result in bad outcomes.

I'm not saying there isn't skill and engagement required to do well in FPL, there is a lot of it, just that it can only get you so far.

Should I take a -4 hit to get Salah back in GW24 or just go with KDB (c) and get Salah in GW25? Likely transfers would be Maddison & Jorginho > Salah & 4.9

    TAA - (C)ancelo - Coady
    Jorghino - Jota - Bowen - Maddison
    CR7 - Antonio - King

    Bachman - Lamptey - Son - Dier

Big fan of Daka but not sure who will start up top when Iheanacho is back & cant really spare the FTs to be hopping between them atm.

As for mid premiums, I think the most profitable move seems like Salah & KDB til around GW26 then KDB -> Son

No doubt us Dennis captainers are feeling slightly peeved about our choice but we'll give the armband to other double game week players this season. It was still an obvious choice - on paper at least. Nobody could have predicted the red card so that's the way it goes. No damage done whatsoever in my mini league at the moment. Let's see how the single game captains fare. The reason many opted for Dennis was because it was proving tough choosing between Trent, Cancelo, Jota, Ronaldo, KDB et al. The double swayed us a bit. We have learnt a lesson, or have we?..

      Yeh was just looking now
Dennis 45% captaincy inside top10k and same around my rank.
King 39% so that’s great for non captainers.
      I’m on Kdb

Wouldn’t say it was obvious for Dennis. Definitely attractive with the two fixtures but was a lot more confident when Bowen had 2.

yes, I wasn't fully confident because it is Watford after all, but the fixtures looked great. Never mind. Hope the De Bruyne captaincy reaps rewards for you.

I think the sgw players will punish today. Dennis cappers were simply unlucky just like I was when I tc’ed Mané vs Wolves & West ham.

Just gotta hope other players in the team can make up for it but one would expect Kdb, Sterling, Trent, Bruno, Bowen, Raphinha etc to do well this game week.
They could easily get sent off too or get injured, basically anything can happen in this f game

Fortunately, I own all the players my mini league rivals have captained so I get half the points. Always softens the blow. I'm the only one with Bruno and Ronaldo (time will tell as to whether that is a good thing) so I may be ok if a miracle occurs at Old Trafford and United play well.

1st wildcard draft before I get out of bed and try to forget about this wretched game!

    Lloris, Sanchez
TAA, Cancelo, Laporte, Digne, Ait Nouri
    Salah, Jota, Bowen, Coutinho, Raph,
    Watkins, DCL, Broja

Leaves 0.5itb. Clearly all subject to tweaks and intl break injuries etc, but thoughts?

Thank you, I haven't seen any templates yet so seems a reasonable start.

Jose Sa - the fixtures are turning and I think RAN is enough cover, but I doubt I'll end up with Lloris.

City mid - this is definitely something I want. Probably Foden somehow as I won't have enough budget to get to KdB, Sterling

      Just some thoughts:
Ramsdale goes with Sanchez and will leave DGW's in the bank.
Raph on 4 yellows I think.
      Early for Coutinho
See my Grav and I would not go near DCL. Too many times I see him miss out for long periods
ManU could but not necessarily hurt you.
Maybe Salah or Jota to keep only 2 Pool for the blank.

I don't think so. Going for Sane and Mane when the alternatives (Aguero and Salah) went bananas once was way worse (esp as Aguero got a hattrick against Chelsea next game as well).

The alternatives to Dennis only have one game or are called Josh King who has done, and will continue to do, sweet fa.

Dennis is my new cursed player.
Brought him in twice now - once in GW17, and he didn't even end up having a game for several GW's, so I sold him.
Then brought him back last week and one of his game gets called off. This week he's my captain!

Some FPL players will have a lasting fondness for Dennis if they had him for the 'good times'. I will only have a bitter aftertaste

    1. AARON-1

I've owned him twice, too, and got nothing out of him. Same scenario with Reece James - I missed the purple patch. I did swerve Mount and Silva, though. So I dodged a bullet there.

    Alonso. No fixtures.
Saka. Only plays twice in next 4.
Trossard. Blank next week. Also is Trossard.
Maddison. Good form, but awful short term fixtures.
    Dennis. No words needed.

    Ronaldo. No words needed.

Guys, team hacking is sadly becoming very frequent and FPL seem unwilling to do anything to improve the security of their website.

I would advise everyone to check their teams close to the deadline. If you have been hacked and numerous transfers made, you at least have the opportunity to cancel the hits by using a FH or WC chip.

You will have little time to put a team together and obviously will not want to have to burn a chip but at least it saves you from complete season ending devastation.

      • 4 Years

More importantly, if you ge hacked and use the email address and/or passwords for other websites , online banking for example.

Make sure you change your passwords or consider a new email address.

this is just a game, and a free to play game at that.

Completely agree. I don’t know the details of the hacks, but protecting account by using really long password generated by a password manager, with special characters etc, would be step one (and don’t use that password anywhere else). To be super safe, don’t allow any browser plug-ins to access your FPL account / website.

Obviously, there remains risk if FPL Towers haven’t got correct security in place, but making one’s own account tough to get into might make a difference.

Take a -4 to get the player, take a -4 to get the player out, you need the player to score more than 8 to start winning point. With a Watford player... Not sure Burnley is an easy game for Watford.

Sorry to hear that. Happened to me last week. Was ranked 3,8k. I sent FPL a e-mail on Friday an got this answer 5! days later.

"We're sorry to hear you've lost access to your account.
Unfortunately, it is not going to be possible to return any transfer points that may have been spent, but we can look to reconnect your old team to your email address so that you do not lose your history from previous seasons.

If you have not done so already, please create a new Premier League account and go to fantasy.premierleague.com. It is important that you do NOT pick a new squad or name a team. You just need to open the FPL home page whilst logged in with the new account. If you can then reply to this mail with the email address of the new account. Can confirm the date of birth on the account so we can verify that you are the account holder please? We also need the Entry ID of the old team so that we can find the account. Just to confirm, the entry ID is 131617?
If you have already created a new team then we will not be able to map your old team to your new Premier League account. You would then need to change the email address on that new team to something else and then create a new Premier League account as above.
Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions if you need further help.
We look forward to hearing from you.
      Regards"

I gave up this sh** and will restart next season with a fresh account although it was disappointing to loose my 11-year season-history.

That sucks, your rank was awesome, I was sitting around 200k when it happend. Thanks for the info though, much appreciated. It feels like they should have sone way to resolve this and roll the task back....it must happen fairly often and it's obvious I'm not trying to "cheat", 990 transfers had been made!

Think I'll take the same approach as you, delete my account and start fresh next season. At least we can enjoy watching the matches again though and not watch it through fantasy football lenses. Good luck next season!
