Salah ‘perma-captain’ in FPL – or opportunities to look elsewhere?

With Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) off representing Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), captaincy in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) these past couple of weeks has actually felt quite exciting again.

Okay, maybe not so much for those who handed Emmanuel Dennis (£6.2m) the armband in Double Gameweek 23, but generally, being able to at least consider the likes of Kevin De Bruyne (£12.2m) and Bruno Fernandes (£11.7m) has been welcome.

Now, as focus turns to Gameweek 24, Salah is back on the agenda again, with the Egyptian expected to be available for Liverpool’s home match against Leicester City.

For some, that will be a relief, but for others, they may be on the lookout for a carefully chosen opportunity to bet against FPL’s top-scoring player, which we’ll explore below.

Firstly, let’s have a look at Liverpool’s forthcoming fixtures, before then zoning in and assessing each Gameweek individually.

GAMEWEEK 24

FPL Gameweek 17 round-up: Tuesday review, injury news and the things we learned

Liverpool’s Anfield encounter against Leicester City in Gameweek 24 looks ideal to hand Salah the captaincy, despite his struggles in the reverse fixture, when he missed a penalty and ended the match on zero points.

The Foxes have struggled defensively all season, conceding 37 goals across their 20 Premier League matches, whilst their 36.4 expected goals conceded (xGC) tally is the worst in the division bar Newcastle United and Norwich City.

However, if Egypt are to reach the last four at AFCON, and Jurgen Klopp were to hint at an extended rest for his star man, we may be forced to look elsewhere. Admittedly, that looks unlikely right now – Ivory Coast are the bookies’ favourites to progress from Wednesday’s round-of-16 meeting – but at this stage, we can’t completely rule it out.

EGYPT AFCON/FPL TIMELINE:
  • Jan 26 – Ivory Coast v Egypt (round-of-16)
  • Jan 30 – AFCON quarter-finals
  • Feb 3 – AFCON semi-finals
  • Feb 6 – AFCON final/third-place play-off
  • Feb 10 – Liverpool v Leicester City (Gameweek 24)

Of the other options available, Manchester City’s home tie against Brentford looks particularly appealing, given that Thomas Frank’s side have conceded 19 goals across their last seven away fixtures, raising the appeal of Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden (£8.0m).

However, there are others, with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur taking on Burnley and Southampton respectively, whilst Salah’s team-mates Diogo Jota (£8.4m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m) would also surely be in the captaincy conversation.

GAMEWEEK 24 – KEY FIXTURES TO TARGET FOR CAPTAINCY:
  • Burnley v Manchester United
  • Liverpool v Leicester City
  • Manchester City v Brentford
  • Tottenham Hotspur v Southampton
  • West Ham United v Watford

DOUBLE GAMEWEEK 25/26?

Learning from ‘The Great and The Good’ FPL managers ahead of Gameweek 23

Gameweeks 25 and 26, at least for now, both look like prime examples of when not to bet against Salah for captaincy, with Liverpool facing appealing ties against Burnley (a) and Norwich City (h).

Whilst we hardly need any further encouragement, it’s worth noting that both sides, plus Leicester City, in fact, rank in the bottom three for chances conceded from their left flank across the 2021/22 campaign.

Above: Liverpool’s next three opponents all rank in the bottom three for chances conceded from their left-flank in 2021/22

However, in Ralf Rangnick’s Friday press conference, he hinted at a Double Gameweek 25 for Manchester United, which would see the Red Devils’ handed back-to-back home matches against Southampton and Brighton and Hove Albion.

“On top of my list is how can we win the game against West Ham, then after the international break, the upcoming games: in the cup against Middlesbrough, Burnley, playing Southampton at home, playing Brighton at home.” – Ralf Rangnick

Meanwhile, there is also speculation building about a possible Tottenham Hotspur double-header the following week, in Gameweek 26, which could boost the appeal of Son Heung-min (£10.6m) and Harry Kane (£12.3m), even if one of those matches is against Manchester City.

We should point out that Salah could even have a double himself, but if not, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he outscored those playing twice, as highlighted by his individual Gameweek scores throughout the season (see below).

However, the lure of a Double Gameweek player is always there, especially when there are premium options available rather than those from teams rooted to the foot of the table.

Above: Salah’s FPL points 2021/22

GAMEWEEK 27

Due to Liverpool’s involvement in the EFL Cup final, they are currently due to blank in Gameweek 27, along with Arsenal, Chelsea and Leicester City.

Because of that, we are left with just eight matches, at least for now, which are detailed below, and ranked according to ease of fixture.

Already, this looks like quite an exciting week, with Manchester United up against Watford at Old Trafford and Tottenham Hotspur away at Leeds United, whilst Man City’s Goodison Park trip is also appealing.

GAMEWEEK 27 – KEY FIXTURES TO TARGET FOR CAPTAINCY:
  • Everton v Manchester City
  • Leeds United v Tottenham Hotspur
  • Manchester United v Watford

FINAL THOUGHTS

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 10?

Finding a route back to Salah will of course be a priority for most FPL managers during the winter break, and rightly so, providing he is fit and available for Gameweek 24.

Once installed, he will probably be the standout captaincy option most weeks, but that shouldn’t necessarily stop us from exploring other options, and there will be appealing alternatives presented to us when further Double Gameweeks are announced.

For example, if Double Gameweeks 25/26 come to fruition for Man Utd and Spurs, then we could realistically be looking at a captaincy run that looks something like this, which is worth bearing in mind when looking at your own squad structure and future transfers.

  • Gameweek 24: Salah (LEI)
  • Gameweek 25: Ronaldo/Fernandes (DGW)
  • Gameweek 26: Son/Kane (DGW)
  • Gameweek 27: Ronaldo/Fernandes (WAT) or Son/Kane (lee)

All we can hope for now is that the picture will become clearer prior to the next deadline, and then we can really start planning.

Probably CR7-> Broja (or similar, possibly Daka if you fancy a punt) and then Jota -> Salah. I'd then upgrade a D to Robbo. I'm not sure Jota will start as often once Salah and Mane are back, but you could make a case to lose Foden instead.

    Which path would you choose?

    1) GW24: KDB (c) in -4, GW25: Salah in -4, both Salah and KDB but no United

    2) GW24: Salah in -4, ignore KDB, keep Ronaldo for GW25

Kane has looked a lot better recently. More motivated and making more of an effort than he seemed to be under Nuno. Bruno will likely double in gw25 and he is also having more influence on games. Bruno shades it for me.

Yes, you possibly are. 5 returns in his last 6, which have included games with Liverpool and Chelsea, plus 3 games in hand. So few strikers that you can opt to make him your one up top, or pair him with Broja perhaps.

Strikers far too weak, think you need to lose a mid premium. Watford, Norwich do not score many goals and Broja could be risk of rotation depending on his returns. KDB to Foden and upgrade strikers

He is a great player but KDB will get rests once other Cup competitions resume. How about another city attacker like Foden or Sterling?Spending less in midfield will allow you to beef up the strikers. I like Broja but the other two strikers are a bit weak.

Nice try at a 3 premium mid team, but Pukki has been really poor this season. Also I think if you look into Son injury & Spurs fixtures, theres a good case for just having KDB as Son placeholder for a few more weeks which frees up the funds to fix the rough edges of this tran

Is there anyone here considering the potential benefits of not going like a lemming off a cliff to get Mo back in?

If he come back flat....or scores 5's-8's.....and you back the right horses against him (KDB, Kane, Bruno TAA, Robbo, others with juicy doubles etc).....then the rank rises will be significant.

Salah hit a flat spot last year and people couldn't escape him (simialr to Ronaldo of late). It was beneficial for those who did.

Has there been any stats done on players coming back from Africa in previous years? My impression is they go a bit flat (with the one notable exception being Mo himself after the last one who I recall was pretty soild). But I've got no data.

Seem like everyone is getting Mo. If he does well then he doesn't help you much, you just keep pace. The upside is massive in betting agaisnt him. Even for a few weeks...if Mo comes in weapons hot then take the medicine and get back on...if not ride it and watch folks refuse to follow.

It's an option to the template perma captain.

What he has done this season already makes me not want to go against him as captain, the few times people thought he might struggle (United away, City at home) he punished big time.

Yep, KdB could easily keep pace with him over a small batch of fixtures, plus he has a blank. Throw a potential DGW option of Fernandes into the mix and he simply isn't essential immediately. He might be nice to have, he may well end up the top scorer in those three games, but there is no particular need to have him right away.

I think on top of what you said, throw Fernandes DGW, potential Kane/Son DGW as well as a Liverpool blank, over those four fixtures it might be worth going without.

        1. Make Arrows Green Again
          • 7 Years

It will burn some transfer capital but it does indeed seem as if at least three of the four fixtures can be attacked for the captaincy and will serve you better if you captain A.N. Other.

It's a slightly higher risk, higher reward scenario for me (and yes, Salah could easily outscore any of his rivals in any and all of those games, except the blank (and even then.. looking at you, Dennis!)).

The only other argument for Salah is that if you have him, even if you don't captain him, you're hedging your bets against those who are captaining him. I think that's nice to have but not essential, and it may not be practical because it involves holding at least two premium players across all four games.

Say you could house three premiums in your team.

I'd much rather have Son than Kane, and Bruno only interests me for possible doubles, so it's hard to tell! I would rank KDB above Kane and Bruno in a vacuum though.

He's played 3 games since 2nd Jan... that hardly screams burnout to me. I might consider going without for next GW if Egpyt somehow make the semis, but at the moment I think its pretty thin grounds for expecting him to "go flat"

Not necessarily expecting him to....but think it could be more likely that a lot think. Not many expected him to stay flat last season. Most were expecting Ron and Dennis to go well in recent weeks....Couthino had the most transfers in this week....but it don't always work out like that.

There is so often great value in in FPL getting off template. Yeah, it's risky, don't get me wrong, but you only have to be right about it once or twice to hit pay dirt.

He is the best player in the league no question. But he's coming back from a tournament. And, even when he was here, TAA outscored him most weeks over an extended period prior to Africa. If Mo were here now Robertson would probably be outscoring him over the last patch of games.

I'm definitely not saying there isn't significant risk involved in not having him him, but the upside isn equiste There are options outside of Mo

I considered it but I don't think there's enough benefit.

Fernandes is not a stable captaincy pick even after his GW22 heroics. He's too inconsistent and United are still very unreliable.

KdB and City have not been great either. Having been to the Ars-City game back in GW21 I don't think they are particularly fluent and KdB often plays quite deep as well.

Point is, Salah with LEI bur NOR is essential imo. I'm getting him back right away.

All very good points but I have made it a new year's resolution not to consider any player essential for any single fixture.

Remember how Salah was going to single-handedly destroy Leicester? Havertz Norwich, etc?

No matter how good the fixture, one game is is not enough, imo, to give yourself a good enough shot of getting on the right side of the variance involved in player performances, especially when those player performances have to translate into those specific actions (goals and assists) which generate FPL points.

Edit (kinda) I know that's not your whole point - you argued for Salah vs the competition for the entire stretch, I just wanted to comment on the final statement : )

Fair. But yeah for this 3 game stretch while other managers might be slow to react? It's a perfect opportunity to get him back early imo and I will be getting him back (if he's actually back ofc).

I will certainly be keeping an eye on what the competition is doing in terms of transfers in, and that will definitely help shape my Salah strategy.

If no DGW's get announced for GW24 then i can get him in with my FT, as i have been planning for it.

There won't be doubles in 24, it isn't possible due to the schedule.

25 looks likely given Rangnick/Hasenhuttl's comments.

Considering not getting him for Lei and instead play KDB as captain. However, it's not a score that i concern, but the price rising. I am afraid that you wait with getting Salah back right for the GW24, you will not easily afford him

I reckon those that want to get him in will do in a very short space of time, resulting in a huge influx of owners without much of price increase.

I just think those who will be getting him in will be engaged managers and not recent points chasers or those playing the team value competition. This means they will probably wait until late, resulting in most of the transfers in the space of a couple of days. We'll see!

I'm still recovering rank-wise from not captaining him at United (Havertz vs Norwich) and Everton (Kane vs Norwich) on the basis of them being tough derby matches against rivals.

      Salah (c) vs Leicester.

Love the discussion and varying views here..... thanks all for the responses. The right answer will only be known in a month or so and good luck whichever way you go.

I'm likely to risk it for a few weeks at least.

TAA outscored Mo most weeks for a decent stretch prior to Africa, and Robbo would likely have done the same of late. It can be done!

Buying the best player in the game is like "a lemming off a cliff"....I'd argue this is the best opportunity to get Salah. He's currently under 10% ownership in the top 10k and whilst that will rise massively, I think there will be a lot of managers that either don't have an easy route to him or will stick with KDB or Bruno or Kane. The fixtures really couldn't be kinder for Liverpool either. Add to that the lack of a consistent captaincy option and it's a no brainer for me to bring Salah back in. I don't trust City enough to captain anyone there and we know the form Man Utd are in. Kane I would argue is the next best captain next gw but with the 2 fixtures after 24 then I'm happy to wait and see on spurs. Son might end up being better value again.

If he stays under 100% I'd agree with you and would get him myself. But that is what I mean about Lemmings....they will come for him in floods. Not implying at all he's not the best player in the comp, but he's priced according. And as you say, those without and easy route back will in many cases use hits and chips to get there. Those factors combined add up to exponential upside if you take a position away from him and it doesn't play out as the crowd expects.

Salah's under priced - should be 14-15m. I could see the appeal if we had some sort of consistent alternative for the captaincy but we don't

He'd need to score a lot of points to justify that price tag. The 3 mil you'd need to clip out of the rest of your team to fund that would hurt.

Mo, even as good as he's been Isn't the top point scorer every week, other players also haul.

Unless Liverpool get a DGW in 25 or 26, I am thinking of going without until GW28. It's not just an international break with 2 or 3 fixtures, it's a full-fledged tournament with 4-7 games and waves of emotions. We saw from the Euros that players who went deep didn't exactly fire upon their return, and that could be applicable to Salah/Mane as well. Obviously depends on what stage they progress to and how soon they return to the UK. Add the away game vs Inter Milan and the cup final, and I can see some rotation in the Burnley or Norwich games, which isn't ideal. Happy to bet against with other doublers.

An important point is that he's been moved to yellow flag, so he won't be price-locked for a week whenever he returns. I was hoping that a price lock would absorb most of the lemmings flocking back to him.

The reasons to go against him are always full of if's. I give you one certainty, Salah is the highest scoring player in in FPL and the EPL. For me no other option that offers what Salah offers. There will always be players who outscore Salah on any given gameweek. Guessing who they are and captaining them is very difficult and over a long run Salah will score higher.
DGW players are always an attraction, but for every Fernades haul there are Ronaldo/Dennis ect failures.

Yeah I get that. As I said there will be views, albeit trusted from different sources. As Conte said he will wait until after the international break. There is no assurance Son will be match fit so this is probably the reason for estimated mid to end of Feb.
All this stuff is so contentious and easy to mislead. Al I can do is offer what i hear if there is a semblance of legitimacy.
I think the conclusion is don't jump Son into GW24 without more info.

None. I think the only time I'll own Utd players again this season will be for FH in GW27 - maybe Bruno/Greenwood, Dalot

DDG for sure, I had Ederson but I needed to take some budget out of my GK. Bruno subject to DGW confirmation.

So is this annoyong winter break permanent and why did it not get staggered like last year?

Made sense to do it this way this year as it coincides with the international break which usually doesn't happen in January.

If I were to ask you to name the 5th highest scoring forward in FPL this season, who would you say?

I bet you wouldn't say NEAL MAUPAY.

    Strange times.

I'd say just about anybody and he is just about anybody. Before the season started I said this year's selection of forwards is awful, and it turned out to be true.

The highest-priced Kane didn't want to play for his team with Aubameyang similarly unmotivated. Then the premium saviors, Lukaku and Ronaldo, both disappointed. You can't expect Vardy to keep it up at this age. Followed by the likes of Firmino, Lacazette, and other medium-priced players that are never really an option. Calvert-Lewin has been injured for the most part, Watkins and Ings are taking each other's land, Antonio, the early season wonder has had favorable stats for seasons but is in fact not a very good finisher, and the rest were cheap for a reason.

More than half a season in, you have 4 defenders outscoring the best striker, with the 5th level on points. Are there that many clean sheets too?

I've lost so many points moving the capt of Mo this year its not even funny. Any time I took a punt, it back fired spectacularly.

Tallied it up - 55 points worse off when I've gambled the armband away from him. Would have me comfortably in the top 10k, instead of just about in the top 50k.

Yeah, I'm not complaining about where I am, happy to be here for 1st time this season.

King Cap could push me on a bit further before the gw is up as well!

How will Edouard be effected after AFCON? Will players returning make him a better or worse option?

    1. Eze Really?
      • 9 Years
      2 years, 2 months ago

Maybe some but Mateta more I think. Only Zaha in the way. and Eduard can play across the front line.

Doesn't Zaha play on the left whilst Edouard through the middle?

        1. Eze Really?
          • 9 Years
          2 years, 2 months ago

Yes but Eduard can and has played on the flank. As I said, I do not expect Eduard to lose many minutes. Mateta, Benteke and Eduard can play up top and Olise/Eze/Ayew could also get more game time I think. All food for thought.

Zaha wide left and Ayew wide right both missing at the moment, who have been first choice.

Means Edouard isn't needed wide left any more, and puts him in competition with Mateta and Benteke for the central spot (which he'll win the majority of the time).

Interesting to read that Ranieri said "with new players" the next manager can be a success. Wonder who he fell out with? With the way the team was playing that disconnect was clearly there

    Which combination to cover the next 4 gameweeks ought to be prioritised;

    1) Kane + Salah + Gallagher (Current)
    2) Kane + Fernandes + Gallagher
    3) Edouard + Salah + Fernandes

    On the back of TubThumper's great discussion post above, it's just got me thinking about options. I'll give my views too;

    - Edouard seems to be racking up the points vs Gallagher, both obviously have the same fixtures, however could be a rotation risk?
    - Salah is Salah, if he's back from Leicester, I'd like him back primarily so I can halve points from anyone captaining him
    - GW24 - I'll pick out of Salah/KDB captain if I have Salah, if not then KDB
    - GW25 - I've got the option of Bruno cap
    - GW26 - I'd have liked to captain Kane, if they DGW but really, isn't that just a single GW as it's City involved?

Think Ed is a rotation risk, I would rather keep Gallagher, hes one of those players you just keep in the team and he returns often enough given the price.

Salah over bruno no doubt, stick with 1

        Just realised I could do;

        DDG
Cancelo - TAA - Digne - Ait Nouri
Salah - Fernandes - De Bruyne - Son
        Eduoard - Broja

        Usable Subs: Coufal - Ramsey

        Think I'll sit on 1) and wait for news on;

        - Salah/Egypt
        - United DGW
        - Research Eduoard
        - Son injury update

Not sure how much it will help with your decisions, but I'm most likely going without Salah until GW26.

KDB will be my GW24 Capt. If United get a double, I'll capt Bruno in GW25, otherwise it will be KDB again.

Kev will leave my team in GW26 for Salah, and Son comes in for Bruno in GW27.

Or at least that's the plan...

I wouldn't go without Salah personally, so 1 or 3, I'd lean towards 1 due to Ronaldo effect on Bruno.

Are people looking to FH GW25 if MU/Southampton and few others get a double (and own Che/ars players)?

Potentially but has there been a leak? Like how Uniteds Ralph let it slip... if not i guess its a wait and see if anyone else doubles

I'm just going to bench Tierney & Martinelli (no Chelsea), play Sanchez & Broja (doubling vs MUN), & take the risk of ignoring Utd assets. Expect 2 fairly tight games & I dont want to mess up my defence for 1 week punt

How would you get Salah in here?

    Ramsdale Foster
    TAA Cancelo Cash Davies Lamptey
    Jota Foden Maddison Bowen DLuiz
    Ronaldo Watkins Dennis

    2 FT, 6.6 ITB

I'd probably get rid of Ronaldo to say Broja and upgrade Dluiz to Salah if that works price wise.

Cheers! Luckily I have 6.6 ITB, så Ronaldo DLuiz -> Broja Salah leaves me with 5.5 left ITB 🙂 I guess you are suggestion to go for a 3-5-2 instead of a 4-3-3 then?
