Salah ‘perma-captain’ in FPL – or opportunities to look elsewhere?

With Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) off representing Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), captaincy in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) these past couple of weeks has actually felt quite exciting again.

Okay, maybe not so much for those who handed Emmanuel Dennis (£6.2m) the armband in Double Gameweek 23, but generally, being able to at least consider the likes of Kevin De Bruyne (£12.2m) and Bruno Fernandes (£11.7m) has been welcome.

Now, as focus turns to Gameweek 24, Salah is back on the agenda again, with the Egyptian expected to be available for Liverpool’s home match against Leicester City.

For some, that will be a relief, but for others, they may be on the lookout for a carefully chosen opportunity to bet against FPL’s top-scoring player, which we’ll explore below.

Firstly, let’s have a look at Liverpool’s forthcoming fixtures, before then zoning in and assessing each Gameweek individually.

GAMEWEEK 24

FPL Gameweek 17 round-up: Tuesday review, injury news and the things we learned

Liverpool’s Anfield encounter against Leicester City in Gameweek 24 looks ideal to hand Salah the captaincy, despite his struggles in the reverse fixture, when he missed a penalty and ended the match on zero points.

The Foxes have struggled defensively all season, conceding 37 goals across their 20 Premier League matches, whilst their 36.4 expected goals conceded (xGC) tally is the worst in the division bar Newcastle United and Norwich City.

However, if Egypt are to reach the last four at AFCON, and Jurgen Klopp were to hint at an extended rest for his star man, we may be forced to look elsewhere. Admittedly, that looks unlikely right now – Ivory Coast are the bookies’ favourites to progress from Wednesday’s round-of-16 meeting – but at this stage, we can’t completely rule it out.

EGYPT AFCON/FPL TIMELINE:
  • Jan 26 – Ivory Coast v Egypt (round-of-16)
  • Jan 30 – AFCON quarter-finals
  • Feb 3 – AFCON semi-finals
  • Feb 6 – AFCON final/third-place play-off
  • Feb 10 – Liverpool v Leicester City (Gameweek 24)

Of the other options available, Manchester City’s home tie against Brentford looks particularly appealing, given that Thomas Frank’s side have conceded 19 goals across their last seven away fixtures, raising the appeal of Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden (£8.0m).

However, there are others, with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur taking on Burnley and Southampton respectively, whilst Salah’s team-mates Diogo Jota (£8.4m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m) would also surely be in the captaincy conversation.

GAMEWEEK 24 – KEY FIXTURES TO TARGET FOR CAPTAINCY:
  • Burnley v Manchester United
  • Liverpool v Leicester City
  • Manchester City v Brentford
  • Tottenham Hotspur v Southampton
  • West Ham United v Watford

DOUBLE GAMEWEEK 25/26?

Learning from ‘The Great and The Good’ FPL managers ahead of Gameweek 23

Gameweeks 25 and 26, at least for now, both look like prime examples of when not to bet against Salah for captaincy, with Liverpool facing appealing ties against Burnley (a) and Norwich City (h).

Whilst we hardly need any further encouragement, it’s worth noting that both sides, plus Leicester City, in fact, rank in the bottom three for chances conceded from their left flank across the 2021/22 campaign.

Above: Liverpool’s next three opponents all rank in the bottom three for chances conceded from their left-flank in 2021/22

However, in Ralf Rangnick’s Friday press conference, he hinted at a Double Gameweek 25 for Manchester United, which would see the Red Devils’ handed back-to-back home matches against Southampton and Brighton and Hove Albion.

“On top of my list is how can we win the game against West Ham, then after the international break, the upcoming games: in the cup against Middlesbrough, Burnley, playing Southampton at home, playing Brighton at home.” – Ralf Rangnick

Meanwhile, there is also speculation building about a possible Tottenham Hotspur double-header the following week, in Gameweek 26, which could boost the appeal of Son Heung-min (£10.6m) and Harry Kane (£12.3m), even if one of those matches is against Manchester City.

We should point out that Salah could even have a double himself, but if not, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he outscored those playing twice, as highlighted by his individual Gameweek scores throughout the season (see below).

However, the lure of a Double Gameweek player is always there, especially when there are premium options available rather than those from teams rooted to the foot of the table.

Above: Salah’s FPL points 2021/22

GAMEWEEK 27

Due to Liverpool’s involvement in the EFL Cup final, they are currently due to blank in Gameweek 27, along with Arsenal, Chelsea and Leicester City.

Because of that, we are left with just eight matches, at least for now, which are detailed below, and ranked according to ease of fixture.

Already, this looks like quite an exciting week, with Manchester United up against Watford at Old Trafford and Tottenham Hotspur away at Leeds United, whilst Man City’s Goodison Park trip is also appealing.

GAMEWEEK 27 – KEY FIXTURES TO TARGET FOR CAPTAINCY:
  • Everton v Manchester City
  • Leeds United v Tottenham Hotspur
  • Manchester United v Watford

FINAL THOUGHTS

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 10?

Finding a route back to Salah will of course be a priority for most FPL managers during the winter break, and rightly so, providing he is fit and available for Gameweek 24.

Once installed, he will probably be the standout captaincy option most weeks, but that shouldn’t necessarily stop us from exploring other options, and there will be appealing alternatives presented to us when further Double Gameweeks are announced.

For example, if Double Gameweeks 25/26 come to fruition for Man Utd and Spurs, then we could realistically be looking at a captaincy run that looks something like this, which is worth bearing in mind when looking at your own squad structure and future transfers.

  • Gameweek 24: Salah (LEI)
  • Gameweek 25: Ronaldo/Fernandes (DGW)
  • Gameweek 26: Son/Kane (DGW)
  • Gameweek 27: Ronaldo/Fernandes (WAT) or Son/Kane (lee)

All we can hope for now is that the picture will become clearer prior to the next deadline, and then we can really start planning.

DGW players may become a higher priority in 25. It's a risk going without him in 24, but as you say a lot of other teams have very good fixtures. I'm probably saving FT.

Will Ronaldo ever be "in form" as we're hoping based on his past achievements, or do we just have to accept that he's turning 37 years old next Saturday and that we can't even expect him to deliver as when he was 25-30?

      I disagree with the majority of comments for the following reasons;

      - Whilst you do have good fixtures with the players you've got are they the right players to attack it with?
      - Ronaldo - I mean we saw what the last DGW he had brought
      - Kane, good pick for Southampton but after that fixtures get tricky. Potential DGW with City, is still a game with City
      - King, I mean we all got duped into picking Watford players so that's one on all of us
      - Gray - Don't know what Everton are really like, he's failed to impress lately like his team mates
      - BSilva, that ship has sailed imo
      - Bowen/Jota/Cancelo/TAA /DDG- standard great picks
      - Coufal - potentially is good
      - The bench, would probably swap them all out given a choice

So it all boils down to, the amendments you could make, are you waiting too long to do it with FTs?

That's just this side of the argument to try and give some context.

Will price rises happen as normal between now and next gameweek?

And if so if I were to wildcard, would I get those price rises if I jumped on them, and then get the team I want post deadline?

Not sure I've made sense there?

Yes. You'll get the price rises if they rise twice.

Thanks, not sure I want to WC yet, but good to know if I did, thinking free hit X 2 for dgw's and then wilcard after the chaos, sound sensible to you?

Yes and yes. But it's highly unlikely there will be any double risers, and even if there were, they would be players you would probably want to keep.

No matter what DGW's are conjured up, a SGW Salah and KDB always appeal more than a DGW Ronaldo or Kane..

    Just my 2 cents worth..

assuming fernandes goes for salah, I really really want Gallagher in. would it be wise to get rid of maddison?

You know who I'm kind of interested in...Mahrez.

I think he would make my WC team if I was gonna do it. He was very much part of the City first team before AFCON and his returns have been outstanding. We have such deep squads that it would absolutely be able to handle the Mahrez benchings and the upside is really high (his last 4 starts have yielded 13, 12, 10, 9 points)

          Erm, it's kinda spead about.

My current team is: (I've used my BB and am on a WC)

          DDG
          TAA - Robertson - Cancelo - Laporte - Digne
Salah - De Bruyne - Bowen
          Kane - Broja

          Usable subs; Ramsey - Gallagher

I hate the 5atb ngl. I hate it because it blocks cheap DGW defenders who you can get ready on a WC since they will sit on the bench until needed. Players like Webster, Ait-Nouri, Davies even Amartey who are perfect for giving you that little boost in DGWs.

That team is also very inflexible. There are mid-priced mids like Jota, Maddison, Coutinho, Raphinha who all can be very appealing depending on the DGWs that come down. Easy to say you'll sell KdB or Bowen but what if they're hot?

It's a recipe for needing lots of hits.

Your team is good for 3 weeks but beyond that once the doubles start coming it's gonna rely on City defense with SGWss and UCL rotation and double Liverpool full backs who conceded 1.82 xG vs palace.

Camzy, what do you reckon for this alternatively?

              DDG
              TAA - Cancelo - Digne - Coufal*
Salah - De Bruyne - Fernandes - Son
              Edouard - Broja

Usable subs: Ait Nouri - Ramsey

              * Could find an alternative if needs be.

                I like this much more.

Would go Davies in for Coufal or maybe Webster if Brighton have DGWs in 25 and 26.

Goalie wise it's Ramsdale - Sanchez all day for me considering the games in hand they have and the rotation.

Interesting... Steve the Spud put Mahrez in his WC draft yesterday & I think I scared him off by questioning mins. Although Mahrez was on a nice run pre-AFCON & might have edged Jesus down the pecking order, I still feel like that spot on the right is one of the most oversubscribed in the City team with Mahrez/Sterling/Jesus all in competition. Also Mahrez has typically been Pep's go-to guy for UCL. Do you think his very erratic mins are about to change?

I got to be honest I am hoping Salah is not back gw24.
Much more fun when you do not have to play it safe and go for Salah. In saying that I did get a few captains do well where I went James, Tierney instead of Salah. However, it was only in the case of Tierney that he got a better fpl score than the Egyptian.

      I'm inclined to agree.

It's so much harder to make gains when your captain pick essentially counts for nothing.

I'm going to risk going without Salah for a week or two. KDB looks a good option in GW24 and a possibly DGW player the week after (if we get one).

Salah will be well over 50% owned by GW25. I don't think you can call him a differential.

Yep, agree. Antonio's productivity has fallen off a cliff so Bowen is enough for WHU with no DGWs for them.

I agree also. Forget team structure. It costs only -4 or two ft:sto change it if needed. I am planning to downgrade Dennis and DCL needs to go soon also. Joao Pedro can stay, Broja in if he has early dgw. Idah perhaps also.

Although Antonio got a decent return in his recent DGW, I think its fair to say he's still been looking below-par recently & in need of a rest. Unfortunately, he's prob going to end up playing 3 times for Jamaica (27 & 29 Jan, 2 Feb) in the break. P

I brought KdB and Laporte in last week for -8. Lucky, yes. But to keep your team "fresh", you cannot ignore good players with good fixtures. It usually ends up to a situation where there has been points lost, target players have become more expensive and team is not intact. In my opinion it is better to bite the bullet rather sooner than later.

Does anyone know the rule regarding price locks for players returning from AFCON? According to fpl statistics Partey and Mahrez are locked, but Benrahma and Ayew are not. Obviously the player we really care about is Salah, and a lock could be helpful for anyone wanting to wait on DGW announcements.
