FPL Daily: Hodgson named as new Watford manager

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points of the day in FPL Daily, a weekday series that serves non-Premier League matchdays and days when we don’t bring you a team news/press conference round-up.

HODGSON IN THE HORNETS HOTSEAT

Around 24 hours after Claudio Ranieri was dismissed, relegation-threatened Watford appointed Roy Hodgson as head coach.

The 74-year-old former England, Fulham and Liverpool manager returns to the Premier League after ending a four-year stint in charge of Crystal Palace last season.

Hodgson’s first game will be away to bottom-of-the-table Burnley on February 5, which is the second instalment of Watford’s Gameweek 23 double-header.

Ben Foster (£4.1m) and Tom Cleverley (£4.8m) will be reuniting with the manager they worked under at West Bromwich Albion and England respectively, so it’ll be interesting to see if their first-team prospects are given a boost from their ‘previous’ with the nomadic veteran.

Tactically, Hodgson flitted between a 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 with the Eagles, systems that Watford played with during Ranieri’s tenure (mostly the latter).

The man noted for uttering “When we are attacking, that’s when we start to defend” will attempt to succeed where five successive predecessors have failed and steer the Hornets to a Premier League clean sheet, so perhaps we can expect a bit more of a defence-first mentality from the struggling Hertfordshire side going forward. That’ll maybe be something to consider when weighing up the captaincy credentials of our West Ham assets in Gameweek 24 and the ongoing appeal of Emmanuel Dennis (£6.2m) but at least we’ll get a look at the new-look Watford side at Turf Moor before assessing whether Hodgson has had any impact at all on the division’s least convincing backline.

Palace were in the top half of the table for fewest goals conceded in each of Hodgson’s first three seasons in charge (the wheels coming off in this farewell campaign), hitting double figures for clean sheets in both 2018/19 and 2019/20.

They were, however, towards the wrong end of the table for goals scored in his last three years at Selhurst Park.

We’ll have a proper Scout Report on Hodgson in the coming days.

MANE CONCUSSED BUT PROGRESSES IN AFCON

The main draw at the Africa Cup of Nations from an FPL perspective will be Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) on Wednesday evening, with defeat for his Egypt side meaning a return to the UK two weeks before Liverpool are in Gameweek 24 action.

Teammate Sadio Mane (£11.7m) and Senegal progressed deeper into the competition on Tuesday, however, after seeing off Cape Verde 2-0.

Mane scored but was immediately taken off with a concussion, being whisked off to hospital for precautionary tests.

“He felt faint, his head was spinning and he had to go [to hospital]” – Aliou Cisse, Senegal head coach

Mane later posted a picture from his hospital bed on social media, stating that all was OK.

Senegal will next play Mali or Equatorial Guinea in the quarter-finals on Sunday, with Mane presumably missing out on that game if there is a concussion protocol.

It’s worth monitoring Senegal and Egypt’s progress throughout the tournament, as any appearance in the third-place play-off or final for either player on Sunday 6 February would, concussion allowing, be their seventh in four weeks – something Jurgen Klopp might factor into his thinking for team selection in Gameweek 24.

Been making some weird and wonderful wildcard teams (mostly similar), but which is your favourite? (*Note: I'm not on WC currently)

    My team right now:
    DDG, Steele
    Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, Keane, Johnson
    KDB, Jota, Bernardo, Bowen, Gray
    Antonio, Dennis, Gelhardt

Team 2 (-12 to get this):
    DDG, Steele
    Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, Laporte, Digne
    Salah, KDB, Bowen, Gallagher, Gray
    Antonio, Dennis, Gelhardt

Team 3 (0.7M ITB - Coutinho to Mount in GW28):
    Sa, Foster
    Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, Laporte, Digne
    Salah, KDB, Coutinho, Bowen, Gallagher
    ASM, Idah, Gelhardt

    Team 4 (1.2M ITB - Upgrade a forward if there's a stand out one?):
    Ederson, Foster
Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, Digne, Ait Nouri
    Salah, KDB, Coutinho, Bowen, Gallagher
    Edouard, Broja, Gelhardt

He's actually been playing OK, and in terms of fodder, he's not a bad shout. Had returns against CHE, ARS and BUR before he had a knock prior to the WHU game and with Bamford still out I think he continues to get minutes. I like the look of him.

No. Once everytime you have Gelhardt, I will ask you to re-do.

But from your reaction to others' comments, you seems not listening. So move on.

I honestly don't like Idah, Glehardt, Coutinho, double up CPL and a iffy on ASM.

Team 2 is so close to your current team, it isn't worth it.

I like Gallagher, JWP, Raph in that order for now. JWP emerges as a great option in a couple of GWs. Gallagher immediately. Edouard and Broja are the budget picks for now and I like both.

Defence and Salah - KDB - Bowen are both solid.

      1. Zenith UK

Gelhardt - he's had three attacking returns in his last 5 appearances and with Bamford still out I like his chances of continuing to get minutes (he's also fodder price - been in my team for a while so still 4.5 for me)
Coutinho - I think he has the fixtures to do some damage for sure. LEE, NEW, WAT, BHA easy to switch to Mount in GW28
ASM - I'm also iff, but realistically up top who else is there? Antonio is someone to come out, Dennis is meh now, Watkins may as well stay as Antonio at that price point. Maupay, Toney no thank you. Pukki definitely not. Kane maybe but I'd rather Salah and KDB
I get what you mean with the double CPL but you just said you like Gallagher (favourite out of the three you listed) and then said you like Eduoard, again their fixtures for the next five weeks are pretty decent.

Also to afford that backline with Salah and KDB, that front line is what is unfortunately required.

RE: Team 2. I'm tempted to take a -12 to get that team, or even a -4 this week and a -4 next week, that should set me up nicely to run smoothly for a while with minor changes (I still have all 5 chips left too).

    RMWC

    DDG
    TAA Cancelo Laporte

    Thoughts ?

Foden is a poor FPL option. Watkins bang average atm and I'm trying to understand the DCL interest? Otherwise a solid team.

Difficult at that price point for strikers though. I sold Ronaldo and wanted a mid priced striker. I already had Edouard and Dennis. I went for Watkins because of their fixtures and they are playing better under Gerrard despite Watkins' own below average form. DCL was another I considered but both he and Everton have been playing shite. Antonio has lost his form. There isn't anybody else worth considering.

Maybe - Foden was a poor option when you owned him? I think I'd continue to own Foden over paying for KDB, especially with Salah coming back. I've been on 2x City Defense for weeks, so Foden is a nice priced mid playing up front. I can use that 4.0 somewhere else.

Other than that, I'd appreciate your thoughts on why he is a poor option?

Foden is potentially a great option but cannot be relied upon. I have owned him for 10 weeks this year for less than 20 points so not worked for me but i think it has for others

    DDG
    TAA Cancelo Dawson
    Jota Foden Bilva Bowen Maddison
    Ronaldo King

    Foster Dennis Livramento Alonso

    1FT, 3.0itb

    Best option for (-4):

    1. Bilva Ronaldo >> Salah Watkins
    2. Jota Bilva >> Salah Ramsey
    3. Bilva Maddison >> Salah Ramsey

I don't think both are traps, Ramsey has been bombing forward a lot and pretty nailed, while JWP is the talisman with so many routes to point. Fwiw I think Cout is a trap.

I already got Tierney and yeah I can actually do the proposed move with 0.8 left! Thanks man will definitely consider it.

This is more a question of how you structure your team. Ramsey is 4.5 and Coutinho is 7.
Ramsey ad 5fth mid looks ok if you want say 4-4-2, 3-4-3, Coutinho is more a third or fourth mid or part of a Five man midfield.

Good effort mate. It is a shame we do not know the actual truth.
My view is if I am not using a chip, i will pick what I consider to be the best potential points scorers going forward and my concerns are more about rotation than DGW's. It is clear City are promising points earners but they will rotate when Europe starts up again. I will probably have defenders only because of this; not so much because they don't double.
The likes of ManU who have one DGW ATM can be a trap to treble up IMO.

Good question. with the Mane concussion, I am not sure if it impacts play time as it is a long way away. I was thinking to swap Jota to Salah but maybe I can wait a week and take the price rises on the chin.

The amount of red cards at the tournament anything could happen.
The ivory coast team looks seriously good though. It will be interesting to see them at the world cup.

Egypt is a pretty solid team defensively and will cause Ivory Coast problems, latter is by far the better team on paper but do also gave obe or two hotheads, like Aurier. If Ivory Coast can score first i think Egypt will struggle, but if Egypt makes IT more of a fight and make ut tight they have Salah Who can do harm to anyone.

My three double game-seekers are Dennis(-2), Foster(dropped), and Lowton (dropped). The latter two get replaced by De Gea (6 pts) and White (8 pts) if they don't play in Burnley Watford game! I know...hindsight is a wonderful thing. Any inside gen if will stay dropped? Lowton best chance of not playing I think.

I’m in exactly the same position with Lowton and I’m not hopeful. Think I saw a Burnley fan saying his understudy was just getting a run out. We can hope though. I have Pope blocking my Ramsdale points so less concerned by that

Maybe if you buy now, 1.3 diff, but if you bought Jota at 7.5 he has 109 points vs Robertson 92. Liverpool plays too sloppy in defence for ny liking, and having double defence Even if it is Robbo, that seems not wise.
Jota is not nailed, but with CL coming i would not think Robertson plays every league game with Kostas being a veey good replacement.

my thinking is that I might as well play around with forwards (and maybe go with those that have a DGW coming up) on a WC since there is no stand out option. Can always do a quick switch to similarly priced strikers later on.

the core of the team is long term, bench/strikers with a view on DGW since I feel I can afford to take some punts there
