Who are the best Aston Villa players to own in FPL for Gameweek 24 and beyond?

Aston Villa have made a promising start under Steven Gerrard, despite a tough opening set of fixtures which has seen them take on all of the current top four: Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United.

During his 10 Premier League matches in charge, Villa have scored 14 and conceded just nine non-penalty goals, and given that they now sit top of our Season Ticker for ease of fixture from Gameweeks 24 to 28, it’s easy to see why many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are now considering their assets.

With Villa Park encounters against Leeds United, Watford and Southampton, plus away trips to Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion, they certainly have one of the kinder schedules on offer, but who are the best players to own in FPL for this run?

In this, our latest Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members article, we’ll take a closer look.

THE OUTLOOK

Can Coutinho transform Aston Villa attack and offer FPL points potential? 6

Across Aston Villa’s 10 Premier League matches under Steven Gerrard, they have a record of five wins, a draw and four defeats, taking 16 points, which is a solid enough return given the opposition faced.

Defensively, they have kept clean sheets against Brighton, Norwich City and Everton, conceding 12 goals, though it is worth noting three of them were penalties.

According to Opta, Villa’s expected goals conceded (xGC) tally is 12.37, whilst their 77.3 minutes per xGC is only bettered by Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton and Arsenal.

Given that they have had one of the tougher schedules, whilst also getting to grips with a new tactical system, those numbers feel extremely encouraging.

METRICTOTAL
Games played10
Goals conceded12
Clean sheets3
xGC12.37
Non-pen xGC10.01

Going forward, it is a little more underwhelming, having scored 14 goals from just 9.99 xG, though with easier fixtures and new recruits, you’d expect that to improve in the coming weeks.

Foden is still being rotated and has 2 goals and 2 assist in 10 games, some with limited minutes. Sterling and De Bruyne form is impacting him.

Edouard dwarfs Broja in the stats department over the last 6 games. His next two fixtures are better but agreed with other posts-seems to be subbed at 70 minutes.

Still think Edouard is better immediately, with Salah priority.

    Should I WC from this:

    DDG-4.0
    TAA-Cancelo-Dawson-Livra-Duffy
    Bruno-Bowen-Jota-Trossard-D.Luiz
    CR-Antonio-Dennis

    3.0itb

    To this:

    DDG-Gunn
    Laporte-Cancelo-TAA-White-KWP
    Foden-Salah*-Bruno-Bowen-Ramsey
    Edouard-Maupay-Broja

    2.6 itb.

Maupay is there if Brighton gets a DGW and Salah if only he's back(can become Rashford or Kdb).

Bad keepers. You could get 2 with plenty of DGWs for the same price. I'm on Sanchez and DDG with a view to switching DDG to Pope/Ramsey when United get their game in hand out the way.

Antonio kinda dying, could Bowen be enough? Again, no DGWs for Antonio now.

good advice, I want to tap into the double city def but agree on double keepers, Bob sanchez and pope might be the answer long term. Martinez perhaps and then Digne to Walker/Laporte

Would Watkins be over kill at Villa, who you seeing up top as a good pick?

I'm not sold on Watkins either tbh; he'll depend on how the DGWs fall for me. I'm thinking of going Broja to keep, then Edouard and maybe ASM to start with, with a view to those two striker positions being quite fluid and rotating as DGWs are announced, to Watkins, Leicester, Laca, Maupay etc.

Fixtures aren't everything. Maddison is the 2nd highest point scorer since GW13 behind only Bowen. He's on set pieces and looks dangerous too.

Unless your midfield is extremely stacked I would find a way to keep him.

I'll happily play Maddison in all 3 of those games and think he'll get a return or two. Unless you're WC'ing in which case I'd ditch him, could do worse than holding.

For me, I have Bernardo and Gray who are worse than him and they will make way first.

For people (myself included), who are triggering WC now, there's a lot of talk about people dead-ending their teams for GW28.

My question to those who may do it at GW28, what teams/players would you be looking to pivot towards?

    Looking at that stage and at a game window;

    - Chelsea (2), Leeds (2), Wolves (2), Leicester (4), Arsenal (4) would be the priority teams (numbers in brackets are current games in hand)
    - There are a number of games in hands which will have likely been played by that point, I'm not sure if the expected games affects the above?
    - West Ham, Liverpool, Man United, Villa drop to the bottom of the ticker
    - You could argue Liverpool are fixture-ticker immune
    - To me that reads; Reece James, Raphinha, Sa, Ait-Nouri, Maddison, Tierney, Saka would be the main considerations come GW28?

    1. Black Knights
      • 12 Years
      2 years, 2 months ago

Sounds about right. I'm WCing now and am getting Tierney now as my defence can survive the blanks. Jota can become Maddison once Liv's DGW is done. GKs i think we'll always have plenty of doubles to consider so won't get Sa, but Ait-Nouri is a cheap pick up.

They probably need a good quality centre back that can organise the backline, maybe a midfielder who can manage the tempo of the game and provide some defensive cover too but think they have enough going forward to score goals.

I was quite surprised to see they’re likely to miss out on Lingard as they don’t want to pay the loan fee. They’ve literally got infinite amounts of money and the loan fee surely won’t be much, just sign it off and get it done

        I don't think that's correct.

Newcastle happy to take Lingard on loan, and the player himself only wants to go there on loan in case Newcastle gets relegated. Man United only wants to sell the player as he's out of contract in the summer, and hence they are not willing to let him go on loan.

        So there's an impasse.

I think they'll stay up now after that away win.

Everton might be in trouble if they bring in this Portuguese manager and it doesn't work.

    How about this after some tweaking;

    DDG - Steer
TAA - Cancelo - Robertson - Digne - Ait Nouri
    Salah - Son - KDB - Bowen - Saka
    Edouard - Broja - Richardson

with all this postponement chaos, strategizing based on fixtures and form has gone out the window. whats the point of looking at villa assets when our near term transfers will be focused on avoiding blanks and getting DGW players.

as fascinated and interested as i am in villas fixtures and form - i cant see myself wasting transfers on them if they dont double in 25 and 26 and unfortunately all focus will be on getting those DGW players (many of which i wouldnt even consider if it wasnt a double).

of course there is always the strategy of ignoring the doubles and getting the best players even if they are singles but given that it is a game of luck/chance - it just mostly makes sense to punt on the extra 90 mins, regardless of the player

i used to enjoy planning transfers based on form and fixture - lately its become pretty pointless

Villa have the double-win of having good short term fixtures and 2 games in hand to arrange. You can't have 11 doublers every week so the next best alternative is good singlers (like Liverpool and Man City also). With Villa you'll get a couple of DGWs thrown in too.

They're not really breaking the bank either.

yeah but if they are not announced for 25 or 26 then your next 3 weeks will likely not include those transfers.

its just an ad hoc system now - you get the players that have the DGWs coming up.

im sure people didnt really want ronaldo, king/dennis, trossard etc in their teams but unfortunately we now have them and are likely to keep them

id love to ditch ronaldo for watkins and get salah for mbeumo (solid moves on paper) but how can a logical manager do that now if he has a double in 25.

Yeah fair enough with FTs. I'm on WC so i'm factoring 1/2 in but like you say, our FTs will be used on Saints, Newcastle, United, Brighton if they're the only doublers in 25.

exactly, and my point is that form and fixtures are unfortunately not enough these days to warrant priority transfers.
we get 1 transfer a week and potentially 10 teams could double in the next 3 weeks and if villa arent one of them, does it make sense to spend those 3 precious transfers on villa players when 10 teams are doubling?

    A) Robertson & Cornet/Gallagher
    Or
    B) Digne & Jota
    Already have Salah & TAA

    DDG / Steele
    TAA / Cancelo / Laporte / Reguilon / Cucurella
    Jota / Raphinha / Foden / Bowen / Gray
    Dennis / King / Ronaldo

All these WC drafts has me tempted. But, WCing this team is unnecessary right?

Reg, Gray, forwards not ideal but you can bench 3 of them and FT another 1 or 2 so you're probably right to hold off.

Can't believe Arsenal sold Willock to Newcastle for £25m.

That is the power of a loan deal.

How are folk approaching their chips and what is your plan.

I have WC, FH x2 and BB left. Guess it makes a lot of sense to WC now right and use the FH for any future doubles?

There are going to be many double weeks, both imminently and at the tail of the season. If you don't need to WC right now, don't feel like you need to waste it... somewhere around 28 could be good too. Just depends how you're currently set up.

What are people Wildcarding this Gameweek doing about Man Utd assets? They may double in GW25 and have nice fixtures right now. Also, if you were to buy a player outside of DDG, would it be Bruno or Ronaldo.

    Cheers.

Don't think we should be gung ho on United assets, we're far too inconsistent for fpl, it's hard to know which United will turn up & who'll score, specially in attack, I'll have ddg on my wc, that should suffice

Echo the comments from The Red Devil tbh.

We look like we take 2 steps forwards, 1 step backwards at times. I wouldn't say we look incredible infront of goal.

      - Brentford, we scored 3 after being siege
      - Burnley were coming back from Covid
      - Villa we were also under siege and scored from a handful of chances

Other than that it's pretty much 1 goal a game.

So yeah DDG is one for me and if you must, Bruno. (Although, our goals scored and conceded and points are the same away and home, we've got a worse home record)

So if Man U have a double in 25, would you still captain Salah away to Burnley ?

Possibly 2 home fixtures for United.

    Thoughts on this wc?

    Salah/Kdb/Bowen/Raphinha/Ramsey
    Edouard/maupay/broja

It's team dependent, obviously. I know some people's teams are in a bit of a mess. However, I'm definitely holding off using the wildcard. I am keeping Ronaldo and Bruno for United's probable double in gw25 - both home matches. I'll get Salah slightly later than most who are clamouring for his immediate return after AFCON. Who knows whether or not he will instantly play for Liverpool when he returns. I think most people wildcarding will avoid United players apart from De Gea. That could backfire even though United are stuttering a little. Don't forget Bruno's 23pts out of nowhere in the last double. We usually like to have the double game week players with decent fixtures. For many, there seems to be a choice between getting United players for double or wildcarding with no United attackers.
