Chip Strategy

The pros and cons of a Gameweek 24 Wildcard in FPL

An international/winter break is often a popular time for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to pull the trigger on a Wildcard and this one is seemingly no exception.

Despite the current lack of a Double Gameweek announcement to address the 19 outstanding fixtures we have, a quick read through the site comments reveals that a number of us are contemplating activating the chip ahead of Gameweek 24.

In the early results of our on-site poll, just under 19% of responders said they were planning to play the Wildcard, while a similar number were undecided:

Lateriser had previously addressed chip strategy in a recent Pro Pundits piece but in this article, we’ll instead weigh up the pros and cons of playing a Wildcard in the upcoming Gameweek alone, saving further analysis for after we get a Double Gameweek fixture announcement.

As ever, whether Gameweek 24 is the ‘right’ moment to Wildcard will depend much on the current make-up of your FPL squad, but we’ll try and outline a few of the more general advantages and disadvantages here.

GAMEWEEK 24 WILDCARD: THE PROS

COVID SITUATION IMPROVING

Unless you’ve been blessed by good fortune over the last month, most Fantasy managers have had to make at least a couple of (or way more) spontaneous short-term transfers, be it just to get a full starting XI out after some postponements or to react to an unexpected Double Gameweek announcement.

With positive Covid cases falling and Premier League clubs set to tighten up postponement protocols, we might be able to finally move on from that Fantasy firefighting and start planning our transfers weeks in advance with a bit of confidence – starting with a Wildcard.

BLANK/DOUBLE GAMEWEEK PREPARATION

All being well, we should get some sort of Double Gameweek announcement between now and the Gameweek 24 deadline.

A Double Gameweek 25 is anticipated based on throwaway comments from Ralf Rangnick and Ralph Hasenhuttl in recent press conferences, while there could be some other small Double Gameweeks announced between now and Gameweek 29.

The March TV fixtures are due out imminently, so it may be that we also simultaneously get news of some ‘doubles’ as happened with the February television amendments.

Before we reach the Gameweek 24 deadline, we’ll also know how many teams will, or look likely to, blank, double or have a single fixture in Gameweek 27 because the FA Cup fifth-round ties will be known by that stage.

In turn, we’ll also likely have a bit better idea (albeit far from a complete picture) as to how many clubs could theoretically blank in Gameweek 30 and 33 when the quarter-finals and semi-finals are scheduled to take place:

CLEARING AWAY THE DOUBLE GAMEWEEK 21/22/23 DEAD WOOD

As well as stockpiling future ‘doublers’, many Fantasy managers will be desperate to get rid of Double Gameweek 21-23 punts who are littering their squads.

Watford triple-ups, Chelsea assets and Ivan Toney (£6.6m) will be on the chopping block due to form, fixtures or blanks, and they can be purged in one fell swoop with a Wildcard.

MAKE WAY FOR WILLIE MO

As of Gameweek 23, less than 10% of Fantasy managers in the top 10k had retained the services of Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) over the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

FPL’s leading points-scorer will presumably be back in Gameweek 24 (barring a run to the AFCON final for Egypt and/or a generous post-tournament holiday given to him by Jurgen Klopp), just in time for a run of matches against three of the worst defences in the division: Leicester, Burnley and Norwich.

Almost 90% of voters who were polled on our site plan to own him by Gameweek 25, so again, a Wildcard allows us to snap up the Egyptian while his price has bottomed out.

A Wildcard deployment also makes the Diogo Jota (£8.4m) to Andrew Robertson (£7.1m) swap much easier, an indirect trade that some are contemplating.

CITY ASSETS

With an upcoming double-header against Brentford and Norwich and relatively low-owned assets like Aymeric Laporte (£5.7m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£12.2m) in top form, there is short-term ground to be made by gobbling up Manchester City players on a Wildcard while they’re purring.

LiveFPL tells us that less than 1% of the top 10,000 Fantasy managers own the De Bruyne, Laporte and Joao Cancelo (£7.1m) triple-up, so that in itself smacks of a differential with a high upside.

GAMEWEEK 24 WILDCARD: THE CONS

MUCH BIGGER DOUBLE GAMEWEEKS TO COME… AND UNKNOWN BLANKS

While we’ll likely have some small-ish Double Gameweeks to come between now and the March international break, the real whoppers are probably going to follow later in the season.

Gameweek 36 is widely being touted as the biggest one of these due to the free midweek that follows it, so a Wildcard in or shortly before Gameweek 35 followed by a Bench Boost in Gameweek 36 will be a popular alternative strategy.

Then there are the unknown blanks in (and doubles caused by) Gameweeks 30 and 33 when the FA Cup quarter-finals and semi-finals clash with the Premier League. While the FA Cup fifth-round draw – which will be made ahead of Gameweek 24 – will give us a better idea of who might blank in those two Gameweeks, it’ll still be a guessing game based on match odds, favouritism etc.

Those managers with one or two Free Hits in hand might still fancy their chances of being able to negotiate their way through the springtime carnage even if playing the Wildcard now, but there are still a lot of ‘unknowns’ at this stage.

FUTURE FIXTURE SWINGS

While there are some new-ish favourable fixture swings to tap into in Gameweek 24 (Aston Villa’s, for example), many of the players who already feature in the so-called template squad have pretty good matches in the short-to-medium term.

Cancelo? Check. Salah, Jota and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m)? Check. David de Gea (£5.2m), Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£11.7m)? Check. Michail Antonio (£7.9m), Jarrod Bowen (£6.8m)… we could go on.

Heck, even those managers who gambled on Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m) and Demarai Gray (£5.5m) for the Double Gameweek 21 that never was at least have the consolation of some appealing-looking matches in Gameweeks 24-26, should they be forced to hold on to their unstuck Toffees.

Compare this with Gameweek 28, for example, another possible point at which a Wildcard could be deployed, as discussed by NABIL – FPL otai in their recent Hot Topic.

At that juncture, we have Manchester United, Brighton and Hove Albion (two teams who we may be gambling on for Double Gameweek 25) and even Liverpool slipping towards the bottom of our Season Ticker.

Chelsea, meanwhile, return from their string of blanks with a succession of excellent fixtures, while the likes of Raphinha (£6.6m) at Leeds, Rayan Ait-Nouri (£4.3m) at Wolves, Arsenal’s budget midfielders and Southampton (whose good run begins in Gameweek 26) also have favourable schedules.

By Gameweek 28, we’ll also know for definite who blanks in Gameweek 30.

‘SOMETHING TO PLAY FOR’/OTHER PRIORITIES

While pretty much every team in the division is competing for something in the league at this point of the season, be it survival, the title or a European place, that almost certainly won’t be the case by the time we get to the final few Gameweeks.

It’s not the difficult-to-quantify ‘on the beach’ mentality that we’re worried about here so much as focus switching towards cups at home and abroad by springtime.

For example, Manchester City effectively – if not mathematically – had the league title in the bag by April last season and their attention was very much centred on their Champions League tilt after that. Ruben Dias (£6.3m), an immovable presence at the heart of the City up until that point, started just four of City’s final seven league matches. Ilkay Gundogan (£7.2m), borderline ‘essential’ during the winter months, made the starting XI in just three of his side’s last nine Premier League games.

Above: Ilkay Gundogan’s Gameweek 28-38 involvement in 2020/21, via Transfermarkt

Playing a Wildcard later in the season would, in theory, give Fantasy managers a better chance of navigating the end-of-season chaos.

The counter-argument to this logic is that you’re narrowing the potential for Wildcard gains to a small number of Gameweeks, as opposed to the umpteen that Gameweek 24 chip activators will hope to make strides in.

THE UNKNOWN QUANTITY OF NEW TRANSFERS

While the transfer window closes before the next FPL deadline, Gameweek 24 Wildcarders won’t have seen any deadline-day signings in action for their new clubs – bar perhaps an FA Cup fourth-round appearance, when line-ups are rarely at full strength anyway.

This is perhaps the weakest argument of the ‘cons’ we’ve listed here as January transfer windows are rarely that earth-shattering, with only really Aston Villa, Everton and Newcastle United making significant purchases to date.

Still, could Arsenal swoop for a forward that they so desperately need and that we Fantasy managers can finally trust? Might Burnley land FPL royalty in the form of Aaron Ramsey in time for their endless Double Gameweeks? Can West Ham finally get competition for Antonio over the line? These are questions that all might be being posed up until next Monday and slightly muddying the Wildcard waters.

Don’t want The Statue for a single GW, much less a double. Look at what he he “has done” this season- that counts for more to me that what he “might do.” Sample size is large enough to be a pretty decent predictor

Assuming Salah is back and Man Utd get DGW 25, would you take a hit for the following?

    Bernardo/Alonso/Jota > Salah/Digne/Ramsey (-4)?

Would allow me to keep Bruno for the double & open up a Pool space for Robbo.

Maddison Martinelli to Salah Ramsey -4?

The only reasonable way to get Salah without losing Antonio, Ronaldo, Jota or taking -8. I know Maddison out is not ideal.

Great article, Neale. I think with my current setup I could delay playing the wildcard for a few more weeks at least, though it is tempting to use it now, or could be once these extra fixture dates are announced. Probably going to be taking lots of hits if I don't use it though.

Thanks, Nimby! Yeah, I'll reassess my own situation (and maybe tweak the article) if/when we get any DGW news. My current feeling is to hold it for now but then I've always been reticent to go early over the years and have probably missed optimum windows in trying to keep it for post-GW30.

Thank you very much! Aye, it'll be interesting to see how many new fixtures get announced. I'm operating under the assumption that it'll just be a handful for now. I wonder, once the FA Cup fourth-round ties are played, whether we'll get more in the following days as the Gameweek 27 blanks will be set.

Zaha just takes away Edouard's chance of filling in at LW. Zaha LW, Ayew RW leaves room for a number 9, and Edouard is preferred to Benteke and Mateta there.

Edouard has been starting since GW 12/13 I think
Maupay is a bit meh I agree, but i don't really like any forward options
I can get digne, big 5 at the back? Downgrade one of the forwards? I'm absolutely frustrated out of owning forwards, so looking at strong def+mid

I'm currently on big 5 at the back for what it's worth.

By big 5 you mean 5 starting defs? I don't think it's such an issue, I saw lineups of palace matches, earlier benteke was preferred, but now Edouard is first choice number 9,so gonna roll with it, he'll start till he's performing

Think at any point of time, one can only own 2 of these at most? I'm on salah & kdb, once son is back, can sell kdb (by then city's rotation might increase) bruno doesn't interest me much, very inconsistent, think for United, defence is probably a better place to invest

@Camzy, please consider this in many ways a reply to your HT - I just put in a lot of work so wanted to give this a shot of generating its own discussion points XD

Regarding the conversation around investment at the back compared to other areas of the pitch, I wondered if it was worth doing a little 'value over replacement player' exercise to see if I could shed some light on this. Then the exercise didn't turn out so little. But here it is anyway.

At this stage in the season, the absolute best VALUE team you can have in terms of points per million only *at current prices* is as follows (in the best valid formation):

Sa £5.2 (18.5 points per million) 96 points

    (£4.0 fodder)

    Cancelo £7.1 (18.9) 134
    Coady £4.7 (18.7) 88
    Laporte £5.7 (17.7) 101
    Kilman £4.5 (17.6) 79
    White £4.5 (16.9) 76

    (TAA is also 16.9)

    Bowen £6.6 (18.2) 124
    Gallagher £6.1 (16.6) 101
    Smith-Rowe £5.9 (15.4) 91
    Benrahma £5.9 (15.1) 89
    (£4.5 fodder)

    Dennis 6.2 (15.0) 93
    (4.5 fodder; 4.5 fodder)

    = £79.9m

This gives us £20.1m to spend to upgrade across the entire team. So... where is the best place to spend that money? For this next stage, we are looking to improve upon the lowest scores.

For better or worse I have upgraded the worst-scoring option in each position with his best-scoring equivalent: so Benrahma rather than Gallagher to Salah; White rather than Coady to TAA etc.

    GK
We cannot upgrade Sa - he is the joint-highest-scoring keeper at any price

    Defence:

    TAA = £8.5m, so upgrading White's 76 points to TAA's 144 points = +68 costs +£4.0
=> Points per Million (PPM) investment = +17 PPM
    Kilman to Rudiger = +23 points at +£1.7m = +13 PPM
    Coady to VvD = +12 points at £2m = +6PPM

No other players are worth upgrading in defence.

    Midfield:

    Benrahma to Salah = +88 at +£6.8m = +12.9PPM
ESR to Mount (Can't get Jota because we have three Liverpool already) = +13 at +£1.7m = +7.6PPM

    Forward:

    Dennis to Antonio = +7 at +£1.7m = +4PPM

This leaves us with £2.4m left over so the best way to get points out of this is to upgrade Gallagher to Bernardo at £1.4m to get an extra 7 points or +5PPM

This leaves £0.8M in the bank. I can't find a way of making this improve our starting XI. Let's assume we spend it to turn some £4.0s and £4.5s into viable bench options.

So our best starting XI for points within the 100m budget is, as I see it, as follows: In brackets is the amount of points per million we managed to get from the replacement versus the best value player in that position.

    Sa
Cancelo; Laporte; TAA (+17PPM); Rudiger (+13PPM); VVD (+6PPM)
    Salah (+12.9PPM); Mount (7.6PPM); Bowen; Bernardo (+5PPM);
    Antonio (+4PPM)

I think what this shows us is that not only is best value indeed at the back, but even when value *does* exist in the form of Coady etc., the best way to maximise on the cash saved by having a good value team is *still* to improve the backline. Then it's the midfield, and then the forward line.

Coady is a really interesting case here: he is the second-best value player in the game, which could be seen as an argument for keeping or even picking him first, but his position is still the one which benefits the most from investment.

Now, this is all based on what has come before and not what is likely to happen. The likes of Robertson and KdB are returning to form in a serious way, DGW players are very likely to feature prominently, things like bench boosts have to be factored in, captaincy candidates are not considered, which might change things a lot, especially in a DGW (this very much assumes a Salah permacap in reality). And, as Camzy notes, five at the back provides much less flexibility than three or four and I am personally in favour of this flexibility.

However in terms of points per million of extra investment, I still think it's worth looking at maximising your investment at the back, even if you only play four big hitters and one fodder. Remember that some of the highest-scoring defenders are also the best value (we did not sub out Cancelo or Laporte).

What do you think? Do you think this analysis is along the right lines and does it help inform the debate?.

This is really good work. I think the problem with the value equation is that the best value team is never going to be the highest scoring team. I do, however, like the way that you have then gone about the upgrades, as you say, the problem with this analysis it's based on past results, picking the right selection going forwards is the hard part, as is picking the right 'big at the back' to start. Had you gone big at the back in gw1 with VVD, Dias, Azpi and Maguire you would be far less happy.

Very true and I will hope to revisit it later. I think the takeaway seems to me to be that, given the state of the game at this point (this season, maybe the past 2-3 seasons with the trend towards attacking wing-backs) it might be better turning the best value defenders into the best premiums in general (once they have been identified) rather than spending vast chunks of budget on the likes of Kane and Ronaldo.

I think it's an interesting read to be honest.

I think (and I don't know how this would be factored in) form also plays a part, for example VVD has scored well over the season but Robertson is the form player right now, I guess where you use Value as your baseline you can then layer it with other factors in your decision making in upgrading.

Whilst I get your and Camzy's take on being unflexible the interesting aspect of this is that it ended up with 2 x City defenders and 2 x Liverpool defenders, part of the upside is that Cancelo/TAA are pointless in the sense, everyone has them so you have no upside for team performances. So let's assume you've gone for 4 defenders, the fifth slot is really then dependent on value again.

Assuming the above, if you were to go Digne, does Digne score more points than a midfielder if you were to downgrade him to a 4.3-4.5 and using that extra 0.5 elsewhere? It's difficult to say.

The other aspect of this in terms of value is that it's not an indicator of total points, if the price of a player is lets say 5, compared to an 8 and the value score is 1 or 2 lower, the 8 is actually worth it in total points.

I love the effort and brings a different thought process, you layered the upgraded players quite nicely so I think there is merit to this.

Yeah I think one important point of it was I started looking for quick wins in each position rather than a complex algorithmic model for working out the best expenditure, since I wouldn't know where to start.

So, taking your 5 vs 8 point as an example, what if I had not bothered upgrading Dennis for a paltry extra 4PPM and instead put it towards more of an upgrade in midfield? There is a lot of nuance there for sure and I don't expect for a moment that this covered all possible outcomes 🙂

Brilliant stuff, also like that it fits in with my back 4 WC side
You make a good point that maybe 5 starting defenders are too inflexible & 3 at the back might not mean optimum utilization
4 at the back it is

Really interesting stuff and definitely helps to put some priorities into perspective.

What I think can be taken away from this is where the value lies we've maybe been ignoring (such as Wolves defence) and team structure (having 4th & 5th defenders as good bench options is ideal).

A lot of similarities in that team compared to the template anyway so decision making does factor a lot of this in, but people are more forward looking in terms of fixtures and other future expectations.

All in all I'd probably lean towards a Broja 2nd striker, maximising opportunities in midfield and having a cheap Wolves defender or 2 to fill in 4th/5th defender spot

I posted on Camzy's post that rotating pairs could match Robertson over the rest of the season.

      Robertson and fodder – LEI – bur – NOR – BLANK – WHU – bha – MUN – WAT – mci – avl – EVE – new – TOT – sou – WOL (TBC – LEE – ars)

      White/Davies – SOU – WOL – BRE – lee – EVE/wat – LEI – WHU – NEW – BRI – BRI – bre – LEI – LEE – BUR – EVE/nor (TBC – bur – bha – ARS – LIV – WOL – tot – che) + 2.5M in bank and no Europe to worry about rotation/additional injury risk.

You could argue the fodder player covers the blank, but even against city away I would still play Robertson over a fodder, so I think the fodder is a money sink.

      Quality work here.

I really like it on FFS when it's slow and there's time for more in-depth analysis of the game itself and to figure out optimal strategies.

The refutation here is that you don't set and forget your FPL team. Attackers are naturally more flighty than defenders because of minutes played and because returns have a greater spread. Hence why using transfers on attackers is preferred. They get bigger scores when they score (thanks bonus points) but are worse value when they blank for 2 points.

Using your example, if you had gone Benrahma for the first 5 games and then switched to Bowen, you would have gotten a 150 point player. Even if you didn't go Bowen, and went Raphinha instead, the cumulative points value is higher.

Transfers make it so that you can swap attackers in and out for their run of good games for higher raw points output.

I understand the value argument for defenders, but that also relies on you identifying the right defenders. How many people would have picked Laporte this season back in GW13? Precious few considering the form of Chelsea wingbacks. Having flexible price points allow you to move your attackers better which means you have more opportunities to capitalize on form/fixture swings.

This season has been amazing for premium defenders but last season was the complete opposite. TAA was one of the worst picks in the game for a while and the best defense was like Zouma, Saiss etc after 15 weeks iirc. And we've mostly adapted to that. 4 at the back has become common and everyone now owns TAA and Cancelo. There is a balance to be found though and when planning we have to look ahead not behind. DGWs now for these budget defenders will likely make them even better value especially since the premium defenders come from select teams (Liverpool and City really) so the circumstances are different than in the first 20 weeks of the season or so.

Yep, agree, nothing is set in stone and moving on and off assets is more important in forward positions. I actually started the season with Bowen and he did nothing for four games and so I moved to Benrahma. Sub-optimal! But cheap midfielders and forwards can outperform their price for short spells and this is very hard to factor in with a monolithic retrospective like this.

A slight counter to your counter re defenders ( 🙂 ) is that yes it can be hard to pick them but this season at least there have been potentially loads to choose from. The inclusion of VvD (albeit I may have made a slight mistake here, see below) who has never been template helps make my case. Add to the mix the number of weeks James and Chilwell and Robertson to an extent have missed and they would have been candidates too. Any number of them could have been worthy of investment.

But I don't disagree with anything you say, it makes for very interesting debate.

Generally I've found that the VORP argument shows up in the pre-season when we can use the entirety of the previous season's data. It often ends up taking a back seat during the season, for many reasons including the ones you've mentioned, but also because of things like captaincy, and the fact that this season like no other players have all played different numbers of games. Like you said, VORP as a methodology is naturally about looking back rather than forwards and logically, if a player has played fewer games, they would have fewer points and so VORP reflects badly on them but they by definition also have more games left to play, which means more opportunity for points and so actually makes them better options. What the mid-season research allows though is an opportunity to identify the so called right options for each position. Like you said it's hard to identify the right defenders, but it's not so far fetched to assume that TAA, Cancelo, Robertson, Laporte etc. are all going to be up there in the points standings at the end of the season based on their VORP so far. Cheap DGW defenders are far more volatile however, there is no guarantee your Whites and Websters are capable of being relied upon even in a DGW, and let's say Webster doubles in 25 and 26, then he has no more doubles and you'd still need a transfer to move him on down the line. Of course in the short term you can bench him, but the same applies to all the cheap DGW defenders and you can't bench all of them.

Just a few musings btw, not disagreeing with your wider point.

This and Camzy's have both been excellent pieces. Kudos to you both.

Being at work I haven't had time to do any detailed analysis, but wanted to ask whether you've considered any circular logic in your reasoning. You come to the conclusion that the best way to maximise value is to upgrade defenders, but your methodology to reach that conclusion involved upgrading defenders first, before upgrading midfielders or forwards. For example, you specifically mentioned no Jota because of already reaching 3 Liverpool, but that's because you chose to upgrade Coady to VVD before looking at the midfield options. Like I said earlier I haven't done the maths but by your calculations, Coady to VVD is +6ppm and ESR to Mount is +7.6ppm, yet Jota has more points than Mount so surely the optimal move is to include Jota instead of Mount and remove VVD. Depending on who then comes in to replace Coady, if anyone, that could have implications for your conclusion.

      1. Make Arrows Green Again
        • 7 Years

Completely fair point re Jota. Actually, annoyingly (for me) I didn't actually start with defenders, I started looking at all positions and filled them in i order of potential gains. I only presented it in position order for the sake of clarity.

My mistake was that I also made an early call not to enforce the three-per-club rule, I was going to have four Liverpool players, but decided that this would be deemed unrealistic so reverted. I must have misread and hooked the wrong one. Apologies!

What may just spare my blushes is that, on current form, Robertson could and should easily replace VvD with room to spare and still keep Jota out. But yes, very good point. Hope it doesn't undermine the analysis as a whole.

It certainly fits the general consensus if Robertson is in there ahead of VVD, or even Jota. Thanks for clarifying.

Nice work on VORP although it's based on this season alone of course.

A broader way to look at the VORP question is to divide your budget into 67.5m compulsory spend and 32.5m discretionary spend (based on the starting budget - the discretionary spend should have increased to around 36m by now).

When you analyse that you will see that the points per £1m you need from the discretionary spend are much higher than you can expect from your compulsory spend. With the compulsory portion you will be lucky to achieve better than 33 points per GW (0.5 points per 1m per GW at best). So if you are aiming for an average 66 points per GW then that leaves 33 points to find.

OK, let's say 7 of those points can come from captaincy. That leaves your 32.5m discretionary spend needing to produce 26 points per GW (0.8 ppm pGW).

That rough calculation (it's just a ballpark) allows you to set points targets for all players in your squad that you don't intend to use as captains. Robertson needs to produce 4.35 ppGW to hit par, more or less. Jota would be 5.37 ppGW. Son would be an almost impossible 7.13 ppGW (not impossible over a short period but to produce that over 38 games would be way ahead of even his best previous season).

That's where this leads to the captaincy calculation because captains have to be evaluated differently - you are doubling their points one week in two or one week in three (or even every week if you are the perma-captain type). So someone like Son can be valid if you intend to captain them on occasion (or for short periods where everything is in their favour - fixtures, form, team momentum and the rest) but is probably too expensive otherwise under normal circumstances (yes, there are caveats but if I write them all this will take forever). 😆

Anyways, long story short... If you want reliable value assessed in terms of VORP points per £1m then you prioritise the defence with your discretionary spend (after you have your captain/s sorted out). You are right to say this and structurally it has always been the case. But it's also a matter of hitting sweet spots and using players that are capable of exceeding their targets in the best combination you can - and that's not always the same combination. 🙂

Thanks! And your way of looking at compulsory vs discretional spend sounds like a great way of looking at things, as does selecting players for blocks of expected points against a baseline.

So often I see a player scoring and think, right, I need to get him, ignoring the cost and not often figuring that a good run of fixtures, which other managers saw in advance, is coming to an end.

Yes, this is the way to do it basically. But we have also much more tv and/or sv to use and then we have to remember to add possible transfers to consideration. We are not planning to play a dead team. If we knew expected points for the rest of the season and every fixture, it would be possible to create algorithm to choose best players and plan best transfer strategy. However, there are minor issues with this approach 😉

But this is basically what I believe we are trying to do. We also add different kind of scenarios that we believe to be likely and try to be flexible if something happens. Robbo vs Jota is an interesting one for example. Some believe that Liverpool is going to keep conceding and Robbo's attacking form is unsustainable. Others fear that Firmino is game time risk with Jota. Robbo could easily better the better pick, but if he isn't, getting him in and out costs two transfers. On WC one less. Jota has decent price point and if we believe that we need Son one day, upgrading Jota to him may be easier than selling Robbo and another mid to get funds. So here comes the tricky part. We need consider also some sort of flexibility value and it is team dependable.

Yes, those are among the caveats. What I was writing about are the underlying fundamentals. But tactical considerations (managing DGWs, for example) are also important and this season a manager's reactive capability is at least as important as their strategic grasp.

For example, I usually try to avoid hits as far as possible. This season I accept that hits will be part of the necessary toolkit so the emphasis moves from trying to avoid them to making sure that they are used as effectively as possible.

Excellent analysis. You could extend it further to points per game per million to allow for the fact that some players have missed games. A judgement call would have to be made to how injury prone a player is though.

What a phenomenal discussion. This is the kind of quality I crave on FFS.

My tuppence 'orth: For me, MAGA's VORP formula is an excellent baseline to create a draft squad. I've just played my WC this week and ended up with a very similar squad to what MAGA advocates, expecting to play a 4-5-1 and even 5-4-1 most weeks. But then you'd tweak it. On past form, he goes with Coady. I felt I'd criminally neglected the Wolves defence, but looking at their upcoming fixtures sense I've missed the boat there. So looking forward, I see Digne as an alternative in that price bracket for my 5th defender. If the change in management impacts on the popular Watford forwards, Broja steps up. I'd tweak the draft to avoid having 2 non-playing forwards on the bench and make sure I have 14 if not 15 active players in my squad (I've still taken Foster as 2nd keeper). I'm maintaining the old 2 Premium rules in having Salah and KDB - something VORP can't include.

tl:dr - MAGA's got a terrific formula to draw up a foundation of a squad, but then you need to be flexible in turning it into a decent WC squad.

For example you have De Bruyne, but don't fancy him for a particular gameweek so then flip to say, Son. The next week you change back.
Of course, price changes and built up value make this tricky to do for a whole season, but with a bit in the bank, is it worth a thought?

Oh hang on. There's only one rearrangement there. Got way too carried away with that.

So Man United and Brighton's DGW confirmed, but Saints and Newcastle not, nor any others.

This is only relevant if its televised. Guessing others might be scheduled but not televised

OK yes, this is true. I opened this expecting to find half a dozen rearrangements, and then was very quickly disappointed. You're right, hopefully it's just a pre-cursor to 'plus these non-televised rearrangements have also been sorted'.

Happy Sanchez and Cucurella owner. Surely they can improve and get more than 4 and 5 points this time.

DGW blindness. Salah vs Burnley and de Bruyne vs Norwich are still better captaincy options in my opinion.

Which option looks better for the Dgw?
    A)Bruno + maupay
    B)Ronaldo + Trossard
Leaning towards A since Bruno can act as a direct route for salah in gameweek 26..would have to take a hit if I get Ronnie in.

    In light of the news and now potentially considering to crow-bar Fernandes in;

    DDG - Steer
TAA - Cancelo - Digne - Alt Nouri - Dalot
Salah - Fernandes - De Bruyne - Son - Ramsey
    Edouard - Broja - Richardson

    ITB: 0.2

    - Sacrifices my Laporte/Robertson double up
    - Loses Bowen
    - Had to opt for Son over Kane so injury news dependent

That midfield is insanely good. Concern over the front two though? No idea who Richardson is!

Is my research letting me down or has Salah never scored a PL goal at Turf Moor.
