FPL Daily: Salah avoids early AFCON exit ahead of Gameweek 24

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points of the day in FPL Daily, a weekday series that serves non-Premier League matchdays and days when we don’t bring you a team news/press conference round-up.

The big FPL news of Wednesday was the announcement that Manchester United and Brighton and Hove Albion will both have a Double Gameweek 25, something you can read about here.

WHEN WILL SALAH RETURN?

Egypt were second-favourites to win their Africa Cup of Nations round-of-16 tie against Ivory Coast but the Pharaohs progressed to the quarter-finals after a penalty shoot-out victory on Wednesday evening.

The scorer of the decisive spot-kick was one Mohamed Salah (£12.7m), whose stay in Cameroon now extends to another four days at the very least.

Should Egypt defeat Morocco in their quarter-final tie on Sunday, that will ensure a stay in Africa for Salah until Sunday 6 February, as there is a third-place play-off taking place on the same day as the tournament final (assuming Liverpool don’t attempt to wrestle him away from that ultimately meaningless bronze-medal clash).

Liverpool are in Gameweek 24 action four days after AFCON ends so, while Salah could easily be back in the UK in time for the clash with Leicester City, it remains to be seen whether Jurgen Klopp would entertain the idea of including FPL’s leading points-scorer in his starting XI after he previously featured in seven international matches in the space of four weeks.

A post-tournament breather for Salah like the one Pep Guardiola gave Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m) is another scenario, although the Algerian doesn’t quite have the same talismanic status as Liverpool’s number 11 and Klopp doesn’t exactly have the same top-class understudies on the right flank as the City boss does.

POSTPONEMENT RULE CHANGES

Postponements and Blank Gameweeks caused by player unavailability now look less likely to happen as a result of a rule change announced by the Premier League on Wednesday.

From now on, if a club applies to postpone a match on the grounds of insufficient players due to Covid-19, they must have a minimum of four positive cases.

The rules will be in place before the Double Gameweek 23 match between Burnley and Watford.

Previously, clubs could request a match to be postponed if they did not have 13 available senior players as well as a goalkeeper.

The statement added:

Club applications will continue to be assessed on a case-by-case basis. The Premier League Board examines a number of factors, including the ability of a club to field a team; the status, severity and potential impact of COVID-19; and the ability of the players to safely prepare for and play the match.

The detail within all applications is scrutinised by the League’s specialist staff before the Board makes its decision.

If Salah is back GW24, have these options

    a) Bruno to Salah
    c) Take a -8 to get both of them GW24

    A Salah
    B KDB
C 1 Bruno or C 2 Ronaldo (cannot be both)

It will hurt getting rid of the greatest player of all time.. but is this crazy?

GW24Ronaldo and Gray -> Broja and Salah
GW25 KDB (likely rest imo) and Dennis to Maupay and Bruno C?

    Thanks all!.

I'd be wary of focusing too much on doubles, we've seen enough in recent weeks how that can end up being futile and can cause you issues with your team later on

Isn't that two -4s and involves switching Ronaldo for Bruno
Why not just hold Ronaldo (people used to think he was a better FPL option than Bruno after all) and do KDB to Salah in 25 if you do think he gets rested?
Wait for news anyway, Salah not not play in GW24

This double opens some fun doors.

If Salah is back I'm inclined to just get him. Which would make my transfers:
Kane, Alonso, Gray > Edouard, Dalot, Salah -4

But if he's not back... I'm actually likely to keep Kane and give him the captaincy...

Then in the next week I'd do Kane + Gray > Fernandes + Broja with money ITB to do Fernandes > Salah in 26.

At this stage KDB given Salah will have lower ownership than normal and may be tired/brought off early given he's played several international games

We have a City FA cup game a few days before Brentford vs. a really in-form Fulham side so plans may change if KDB plays 90 there!

    Assuming Salah back for GW24:

    A. Ronaldo + Martinelli > Salah + Edouard -4 (and FH in GW25 to have both Ronaldo + Bruno)

    B. Keep Ronaldo for DGW and save FH, waiting until GW26 for Salah and no Bruno for DGW

Can captain KDB if don't bring in Salah for GW24

I am not convinced United will do well in that double. They are all inconsistent, the big players aren't scoring, Brighton are playing well and I am not convinced United will just show up and win this 10-0, Southampton on paper could be a good one for FPL United assets but even then, United have just played Burnley who have lost their main striker and with interest in one of their regular back four and they still finished the match 0-0. I will be avoiding I think.

Still looking to bring in Salah, but it's a question of who I'm replacing. At the moment it kind of makes sense to sell Alonso and Foden (I know) and buy Brandon Williams and Salah, as I just about have the cash to do it. If not, I might sacrifice Ronaldo and go for Edouarde and upgrade Gilmour to Salah. Still ages until the next gameweek and it's occupying my mind a lot more than I should let it!

Brighton and United - is it a case of don't buy, don't sell for gw25?

Own just DDG right now and next to no interest in Ronaldo, so would be Bruno for me but prefer to get Salah back first priority even if not in 24.

Maybe Keane for Dunk since I have White who blanks in 25

I'm considering a utd or Brighton defender and maybe sterling to Bruno but sterling has Norwich so probably won't bother if it looks like he'll start. I also only have DDG and I've rather foolishly held Salah throughout AFCON so no need to bring him in but limited cash in the squad

I looked at the fixtures and looked at my team decided that I was not happy with it. I was going to take a -4 -8. Then realised there was a lot of deadwood - and decided to Wildcard. 6 changes

    IN Broja OUT King
    IN Foden OUT Lucas Moura
    IN Fernandes OUT Jota
    IN Ramsey OUT Maddison
    IN Dalot OUT Diop
    IN Digne OUT Rüdiger

    De Gea (Sanchez)

TAA - Cancelo -Dalot - Digne (Tierney)
    --
Fernandes - KDB - Foden - Bowen (Ramsey)

    --
    Antonio - Watkins (Broja)

    ----
Plan for gw25 is Antonio OUT Richardson IN - Foden out Salah in if looks like he is back and starts.
If not I either save transfer and play Foden v Norwich or sell Antonio

    --
Bit of a bench headache gw24 - but I went with Tierney just - away game. Plus Wolves are playing well.

I have 1.4m itb leaves options open. As for TV in general I try and play the price rises if I can early in the season. Hopefully it stands me in good stead now. I am aware I will need Chelsea and Spurs down the line. But the beauty of WC now is that Chelsea have all those blanks. Spurs are missing Son for a while yet. Plus it covers me for the Man United double. Also fixed my bench long term.

Personally not a fan of Ronaldo but its not like we have too many options upfront.

I think you have the luxury to start with Ronaldo and Bruno, take advantage of double and then move Bruno to Salah.

Again, if he's back on Sunday, will he start against Leicester? He should, but let's see
I'm really unconvinced by United attackers myself

Salah wants to play every game for Liverpool, that is evident as he didnt even get rested in dead rubber against AC Milan at San Siro, its all about records etc for him. If hes back on Sunday then he def starts v Leicester.

I have the cash to do Bruno to Salah if needs be makes sense. As gw25 Man City have Norwich plenty of captain options. No rush on Salah. Gw 26 can get him v Norwich.

Yeah, that's my current strategy, though I'm not 100% confident about it, watching a pool game without owning Salah is scary

Not for me, then again it depends if Ronaldo plays those games, if so, Bruno will do nothing.

Have just enough money itb to do Mount & Maddison to Bruno & Ramsey for free. Worried that I could be priced out. But then the likes of Wood and Antonio are still going to play during the break, so might get injured.

Should I pull the trigger to avoid price rises? Is there going to be any other DGW25 announcement (like maybe Southampton vs Newcastle) before deadline?

you have WC and both FH left? If yes, then go for those moves. Less risky.

Doubt SOU vs NEW double would change anything.

Got WC but only one FH left.

If Southampton double I can do Mount & Antonio to Bruno and Broja instead. But losing Antonio with the 3 fixtures is uninspiring as well.

So everyone jumping on the DGW Bandwagon again, no lessons learnt from previous ones? How many goals do we actually expect United to score against 2 decent well organised sides, Southampton and Brighton? I expect 2 goals max, United are not going to start scoring 5 or 6 anytime soon by looks of it.

I dont consider Southampton as a well organised side but yeah, Man Utd arent any better.

The all conquering City created very little against them and relied on a set piece to score. I think they are better than we think.

Captained Bruno in the double with a free hit team.

Gained 50+ points on my rival at the top.

I learned lessons to take more risks.

Just out of curiosity, who is your captain on this current GW? Did you take the 'risk' and go Dennis? I stupidly bought into DGW and went King, thats my lesson learnt.

    Options are:
    A - Sterling > Salah (-4) in GW24
    B - Sterling + Emerson > Bruno + Laporte (-4) in GW25
