Salah’s return, Leicester’s set-piece issues and Martinelli’s ban: FPL notes

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Thursday’s Gameweek 24 fixtures.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS AND BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

Jordan Henderson (£5.0m) was absent for Liverpool in Gameweek 24 with a back problem, though Jurgen Klopp did confirm prior to kick-off that it wasn’t serious.

“Jordan Henderson has some back problems, not massive, but not enough to be involved tonight.” – Jurgen Klopp

A calf injury kept Joao Moutinho (£4.9m) out of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ squad, while Hwang Hee-Chan (£5.4m) was an unused substitute, having suffered a back spasm upon arriving at the stadium.

“I really don’t know (how long he’ll be out) and for tonight he was unavailable. He felt something in training so lets see how he goes in the next couple of days.” – Bruno Lage on Joao Moutinho

“He was training well yesterday and I talked with the doctor. We took the decision for him to come and play 15 minutes and when he arrived at the stadium he felt his back. A spasm. He was on the bench but it wasn’t possible for him to play in the game. Maybe one or two days and he can return, but it was strange.” – Bruno Lage on Hwang Hee-Chan

Bernd Leno (£4.5m), meanwhile, missed Arsenal’s trip to Molineux after testing positive for Covid, whilst Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.7m) also failed to make the matchday squad due to an ongoing calf problem.

However, the big FPL news is that Gabriel Martinelli (£5.4m) will miss the first match of Arsenal’s Double Gameweek 26 against Brentford, after being sent off for two bookable offences in quick succession.

That’s because the Gunners’ won’t feature in Gameweek 25, due to their scheduled opponents Chelsea participating at the Club World Cup.

As a result, Martinelli now has just one match – funnily enough against Wolverhampton Wanderers again – in the next three Gameweeks.

“I think the level that he’s playing at, the way he’s been every game, the way he’s been evolving. It’s a real shame because he’s going to miss the game now because we need him and because we are really, really short.” – Mikel Arteta

GAMEWEEK 24 TALKING POINTS

SALAH RETURNS AS DIAZ MAKES FIRST START

Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) was back in the Liverpool squad in Gameweek 24, having missed the Reds’ last six games in all competitions due to his participation with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

However, the Egyptian had to settle for a place on the bench, though he certainly made an impact upon his arrival after 59 minutes, racking up four shots in the box, which carried a combined expected goals (xG) value of 0.78.

Above: Mohamed Salah’s xG shot map v Leicester City in Gameweek 24

“It was not his choice! It was my decision of course, but it was completely fine. It is understood. He is here to contribute and he will come on, definitely. But coming back from a major tournament… come on, at some point we have to think a little bit. We have to be cautious. Sadio Mane got back last night and is still in bed!” – Jurgen Klopp on Mohamed Salah being on the bench

Elsewhere, Diogo Jota (£8.5m) netted his 16th and 17th goals of the season, and took up an unfamiliar role on the right-wing during the first-half, as Luis Diaz (£8.0m) started on the opposite flank, with Roberto Firmino (£8.7m) deployed through the middle. That changed after the break, however, as he moved at first to the left-wing, and then into more of a central role upon Salah’s introduction.

SET-PIECE ISSUES REMAIN AT LEICESTER

Leicester City’s ongoing issues defending set-pieces continued at Anfield on Thursday, as Virgil van Dijk’s (£6.7m) thumping header from a corner, which was initially parried by Kasper Schmeichel (£4.8m), was then turned in by Jota from close-range.

As a result, the Foxes have now conceded 10 goals from corners in the Premier League this season, more than any other side, which could be good news for Burnley assets like Wout Weghorst (£6.5m) and James Tarkowski (£4.9m), in light of today’s Double Gameweek 27 announcement.

Despite being able to take some positives from defeat, especially after Sunday’s abject showing at Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup fourth round, it is worth noting that the Foxes have now gone eight away matches without a win in all competitions, conceding 23 goals.

“You have to be tight and organised and when you have the ball, have the courage to play and I thought the boys did that. I think our two centre-halves did great. Wilfred Ndidi got caught in the pack for the first goal and Virgil van Dijk had a free header. It’s been an ongoing problem for us. It’s definitely an area we have to improve on.” – Brendan Rodgers

ANOTHER CLEAN SHEET FOR ARSENAL

Arsenal had an awful January, failing to win in the league and getting knocked out of both domestic cups.

However, they picked up an important three points at Molineux on Thursday, thanks to Gabriel’s (£5.3m) first-half winner, his third league goal of the campaign so far.

Notably, the 1-0 win means that Mikel Arteta’s side have now kept 11 clean sheets this season, more than any other side bar Manchester City and Liverpool.

All of those have arrived with Aaron Ramsdale (5.1m) in goal, with today’s nine-point haul taking him up to second in the FPL goalkeeper standings. Since making his debut in Gameweek 4, he’s averaging 5.3 points per match, the best tally of any keeper to play more than once.

“We put ourselves in trouble with the red card and we had to dig in. Wolves threw seven players up front and it was difficult to maintain a clean sheet but we defended the box extremely well.” – Mikel Arteta

Elsewhere, Thomas Partey (£5.0m) and Granit Xhaka (£4.8m) were paired together in midfield, which meant Emile Smith Rowe (£5.8m) had to settle for a place on the bench again. However, due to Martinelli’s suspension, it’s likely he’ll come back into the starting XI against Brentford in Double Gameweek 26.

“Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey link the team together. They have the right qualities to play the roles we demand them to. They are vital in the way we play.” – Mikel Arteta

This week it's the Bruno/KDB Conundrum! It may make or break our seasons.

Or not, because they both haul, relatively speaking. I still want to cap Bruno, but otherwise not much involvement in DGW 25.

              It's about DGW 26...

    1. Gunneryank
      • 2 Years

Attacking cover isn't a thing. You have to judge based on just the individual, while considering who around him could help make him a good fpl choice. Ramsey of course is an economic advantage, and we've seen he can do the business. Coutinho is a more talented footballer, probably, and i think an argument could be made for both, all things considered.

cheers, i was about to make the move and likely priced out now, so at least it gives me more info tomorrow and forces me to do ramsey in that case, which long term is probably right to give me the cash to make other changes in a few weeks

yeah, my squad looks pretty awesome at the moment (at least on paper lol!) but i know there's some fixture swings in 2/3 weeks and there's bound to be someone i need that couple of million for..

good luck with the WC, i'd deffo have Ramsey on a WC!

Thanks, much luck to you as well! I don't hate my team either, but i think opportunities have to be taken advantage of, and we get nothing for extra chips we didn't use at the end of the season. I have a day to decide lol...

if in doubt i normally go for it, probably not the most composed thinking but it's also about having fun and it's nice the hope we have when we play our wildcards, it lights up our lives....at least until kick-off anyway 🙂

i played my WC about 3 weeks ago, got rid of all the chelsea and couple of others that i needed to and i'd say i'm about as well positioned team-wise as anyone who's played their WC more recently, a few of the 'on-paper' good/logical picks haven't worked out, but it's all about putting yourself in the best position , as you say if you see an opportunity you can take advantage of....check the team news and see how you feel, all the best!

I just did Steele to Foster who has a DGW abs only 0.1 (plus he plays so surely better long term).

Bruno and Madison to Salah and Saka for GW26. TC Salah.

Pretty much the same as me apart from I have Foden instead of Mads.

Very rough, again. Wrong captain in Foden (Jota VC arggh). Rather than burn a FT bought in Ait Nouri for future (DGW30, BGW30, good end of season run) plus cash reserves. He got benched.

Now have 11 red arrows in 13 GWs. I had 11 red arrows all last season.

Going back to being casual, probably.

I guess on the smooth side, the rugby league season in Australia starts soon so I can shift my efforts to Fantasy that instead. Which will make the FPL less painful.

GW was great, a stream of green for many weeks.

Rough was that i very nearly wildcarded into Ramsey and Coutinho, and held off. I have CR7 and Antonio still, which makes me feel like and idiot. But...

The smooth is Kevin, oh captain my captain, and while i know i should have Tierney instead, Ben White created a sizable green arrow for the 2nd GW running....all by himself.

      Pretty good going for me.
      Up to 2.3K OR. With a 91 (-4)
Did a -4 this week and bought Coutino and Digne in. Took out Cucurella and Greenwood.

Crazy as it sounds I’ll take a -16 over the next two weeks. To be set up and leading to FH in 30.

Will do over next 2 weeks
          Pickford to De Gea

          King to Broja
Gray to Bruno (and cap) and then to Salah for 26

Before Thursday’s games, I had a 1 point advantage over my cup opponent. I had Jota & TAA left. So did he + Martinelli. Cup exit..until that red card. Never made it to Round 10 before. Feels good but it won’t influence my OR plans.

Awful. Down from 14k to 35k with only Jota bringing me to 55 for the week. Took a 8 pt hit.

      - Kane Captain after switching the band between Cancelo & Jota all week
      - attackers like Bruno, Dennis, Foden, Kane, Antonio all blanking again

Lot of rough with bit of smooth
My WC until the last half hour was ait nouri benched with Ramsey starting, sold ait nouri for digne & started him & benched Ramsey
Started DDG over Ramsdale, so, my bench was- Ramsdale, Weghorst, broja & digne & Edouard starting, went robbo over jota, but i think (hope) that'll get evened out over the next few weeks

      Smooth

Small green arrow so overall a smooth with my transfer being Moura to Ramsey.

It has been my first properly bad GW of the season really. 54pts. Salah(c) and Martinelli last night. Jota, TAA, Bowen and Cancelo were all over 100%EO. Out of LMS and the cup and down OR.

My smooth was Laporte, who has been my player of the season so far. And the fact that at least I have 2fts and Salah in place already going into GW25

Rough: Grotty 43 points. Capped Bruno, very nearly switched to Jota whilst in the bathroom after getting in from work but decided to leave it be in the end. The writing was on the wall with that early goal disallowed! After two greens a massive drop from 250k to 380k.

Smooth: Dias and Jota my only returns. Nine 1 and 2 pointers. At least I'm well set for DGW25/26.

Just to rub it in its my birthday Sunday and I've just tested positive! 🙁

Rough: Took a hit to sell Telles (-) and Gray (0) for Salah (1) and Digne (1), allowing me to bench Moura (5). Cost me 7 points

A more tenuous but impactful classic FPL situation that others may relate to: I planned to buy Ramsey and Coutinho in the previous DGW (they scored 30 points this GW), but was persuaded by the DGW to buy King and Pedro to triple-up on Watford forwards and TC Dennis's red card. Quite a swing. (And a miss). 😆

Pretty much all smooth this week. I scored 115 pts and achieved a GW Rank of 420 (my 2nd highest ever).

Broja, Pukki, Coutinho and Gabriel were my big differentials, and I captained De Bruyne (Jota vice).

Dennis was my only player to blank.

Reservoir Dogs is kind of ubiquitous. It's amazing and i saw it at an impressionable age. But Pulp Fiction and Inglorious Basterds are great shouts. Those are top 3.

True Romance gets an honorable mention, though, and has a special place in my heart.

The more i think about it, Inglorious Basterds might just be runner up to Reservoir Dogs. A masterclass in tension building, with not just one but 2 outstanding and excruciating scenes, and an all time great antagonist.
