Every once in a while, I reach out to the community for their questions. Before another big Double Gameweek, I thought I would answer some more of these in this article.

Q) With what you know now, what was the best chip strategy this season? (From @Beerfuelledman)
The best Arsenal players for FPL Double Gameweek 29 and beyond

Hi Sergeant, thanks for the question. I picked this one out to give a quick answer.

There was no ‘one size fits all’ approach this season. It is always about the current position of your Fantasy Premier League team and how you consolidate that. For example, if you are heavy on Arsenal and Liverpool assets in Gameweek 26, you don’t probably need to Wildcard then. If you’re not, you probably do. I strongly feel that there is no “best” chip strategy and would like to quote Antonio Conte from his Chelsea days at this point.

“The coach must understand and find the right suit. We are like a tailor.”

Change ‘coach’ to ‘FPL manager’ and this is what my opinion is.

Q) Is the million saving worth it for Gabriel Martinelli over Bukayo Saka? (From @MitchKeing)

Thanks for the question, Mitch. I have always been a big Gabriel Martinelli (£5.3m) fan but for me, Bukayo Saka (£6.5m) has gone above him in the pecking order from an FPL point of view.

Firstly, I think Saka is as nailed as they come when it comes to the Arsenal team. I have a feeling that Martinelli is facing some competition from Emile Smith Rowe (£5.8m) and Nicolas Pepe (£6.9m). Even in the last game against Watford, Saka shifted to the left in Martinelli’s position when Pepe came on. So if you’re looking for a stable mid-term pick that you can comfortably hold for a while, Saka is that guy for me. I’m actually looking at maybe doubling up this week because I love the match-up for Martinelli due to the high line that he’s going to face against Liverpool.

What I like about Saka the most as a pick is the selflessness of his teammates. Both Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m) and Martin Odegaard (£5.5m) are always looking to play one-twos with Saka, which leads to the midfielder sprinting and getting through on many occasions. He is one of the best value assets in the game that you can set and forget for a while at that price point – a proper ‘Glue Guy’. As Tom points out in his article, since Gameweek 16, Saka is third for shots, eighth for chances created and 13th for expected goal involvement (xGI) among midfielders. That said, I am not against the double-up with Martinelli, who’s a much more short-term pick in my eye.

Q) If you have one Free Hit left, do you use it in Gameweek 30 or save for a later opportunity? How many guys can you get away with playing in Gameweek 30 if saving the Free Hit? (From @ChetoChip)
Spurs assets impress ahead of FPL Double Gameweek 29 4

Thanks for the question, Cheto. I was earlier looking at using the Free Hit in Gameweek 30 but on my Wildcard in Gameweek 28, I thought better of it and I think it’s better to save it. I think there might be better opportunities with bigger upsides in Gameweek 33, 36 or 37. If you target Arsenal or Spurs players right now, they have a Double Gameweek in 29, a confirmed match in Blank Gameweek 30 and have good fixtures until the end of the season. So if you have already used your Wildcard, I wouldn’t shy away from taking hits for assets from these teams, both of whom have good FPL picks in their teams. In terms of a ‘number’ in Gameweek 30, it’s about getting quality rather than quantity and I’d feel confident with six to seven picks from Arsenal, Spurs and Leicester City combined.

Q) Thoughts on doubling up on Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson until the end of the season? It was an idea that was catchy a few weeks ago but seems to be less popular now, I assume for budgetary reasons. (From @FPL_Banger)
In-form Robertson an appealing FPL differential for Gameweek 23 and beyond

Hi Siva, thanks for the question. I like the idea of Andrew Robertson (£7.2m) as the third Liverpool asset (it is obvious who the first two are) a lot if you’re looking at mid-term. I got a lot of questions with regards to the third Liverpool option so I will answer both questions with this answer.

At the moment, I think there are three attackers competing for that third spot in the Liverpool frontline and if I was in the market for a one-week punt, I’d go Luis Diaz (£8.0m) or Diogo Jota (£8.3m) – but it would strictly be a one-week punt, for me. My inkling is because of the importance of the games in the league, Luis Diaz would get more minutes in Double Gameweek 29, especially after Jota got a lengthy run-out in the Champions League in midweek and didn’t particularly impress.

Whichever Liverpool attacker of the two you pick for a short-term punt, I would expect not more than 120 minutes – which still might be enough. These quotes from Jurgen Klopp have put me off from a second Liverpool attacker if I’m looking at someone mid-term but you can always go from a Reds asset to a Leicester City midfielder next week.

“The boys have now really proper quality in-depth, but we cannot play all competitions and go far in the competitions if we don’t have this depth, there is no chance. You can do it for a year when you are lucky with injuries, but I think we had years where Bobby, Sadio and Mo played pretty much all the games, if I am right. Sometimes they came from the bench, but the next game they started again. In a week, especially like this – Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday and Tuesday, when we play again against Inter, there is no chance that you try to get through with the same line-up.” – Jurgen Klopp on rotation

If you’re looking for a mid-term pick, Robertson is just back into his groove, isn’t he? He’s top for chances created and attacking returns amongst all defenders in the last six matches and also has a very handy home fixture against Watford in Gameweek 31. He’s sharing corner-taking duties now, too, and generally just has a lot of avenues to points. A lot of us have sold Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) of late and what I like about Robertson is it is an easy switch to the Manchester City man if you fancy that at some point in the season.

That’s it from me. I’ve received a lot of Spurs questions as well this week and the fact that I went Harry Kane (£12.3m), Dejan Kulusevski (£6.1m) and Matt Doherty (£4.7m) on my Gameweek 28 Wildcard should tell you a lot about my opinion there. I think all three of them along with Son are good picks but going Son and Kane in one team might not enable a lot of other things. Both Kulusevski and Doherty offer a lot of value in their price brackets. And plus, it gets you singing some ABBA which always helps. This two-minute short clip should give you my opinion with regards to them:

GAMEWEEK 29 TEAM PLANS

I was pleased with how my Double Gameweek 29 Wildcard went, which led to a huge green arrow and an entry into the top 10k – which is honestly a relief after the debacle of a season last year. I’m hoping the guys at Fantasy Football Scout will now keep me writing for them next year!

This is what my Wildcard looked like. I am likely going to use the Bench Boost chip in Gameweek 29 and have a couple of transfers in mind, which I’ll only decide after Thursday’s games.

Looking at bringing in either Cancelo or Robbo for GW31.

    Which one?

    A. Cancelo
    B. Robbo

    Current defence

    TAA / James / Tierney / Digne / Kilman

    Thanks

Those playing through 30, what approach are you taking to getting a third Liverpool slot in 29?

In my own team it means removing existing gw30 players (Coutinho, Saiss, Gabriel) or doing a hokey cokey with a Chelsea defender to keep the numbers up to 9-10.

Not so much in the WH game, but Robbo's numbers frighten me. But as you say, sacrifices would be needed.

    Bottomed.

Did my WCGW28, below is line up for GW29 with BB. Was planning on rolling transfers to GW30 and could -4 then for 11 players.

    GW29BB

    Ramsdale
    James Rudiger TAA* Dier*
    Saka* Salah* Raphina Willock*
    Kane* Lacazette*

    Dubravka*, Broja, Ramsey, Kilman

Planning to swap out Rudiger, Willock & Salah > Son, Soyuncu & Barnes GW30 to get 11 players?
Other option is swap Raphina > Kulu now but not gaining anything apart from an extra game as both playing GW30?

    Any suggestions?

You don't HAVE to get 11 players for 30. Rudiger might rise in price before 31, so could be worth holding on to for 30. Unless you really, really want Son specifically, e.g. for C purposes on 29/30.

Willock to Kulusevski/Barnes/Maddison for 30 is definitely an option to get an extra player for the BGW.

Ramsey to Gordon (or Kilman to Holgate) are possible DGW29 punts for the BB. Good part is, they give extra funds towards the XI with future uncheduled matches in back pocket. Problem is, they blank on 30 so the extra matches only come in the 31-38 run of fixtures and you need to hold until then and play them during their DGW to actually get the value.

Thanks - I wouldn't necessarily captain Son in GW30 as also got Kane so would be one or other.

I don't think i'd touch Everton at the moment, disastrous form.

Not for me. Losing Son could backfire horribly and seems a backward move if I'm honest.

I'd just consider getting Kulu and Robbo if that's doable. The vast majority will captain Salah so I don't see Kane as a necessity, especially if you have Son and Kulu.

Go with your gut. Moving to Kane could be a good move give the number of budget midfielders available. The same cannot be said for budget strikers.

Also, Kane is an easier move to Vardy in the future for Leicester doubles.

    A. Bowen, Foden and King to 4.4m mid, Kulu and Kane (-8)

    Only WC and BB left

can we ban "downed tools' or any derivations of players not trying in punditry please? its not analysis. on motd when they move a player on the screen to where they think he should have been just seems redundant. Yes there are times when its clear that well if the player had just made more effort here-like Fred- then they might have stopped an attack that led to a goal but to say they arent trying or have given up is cheap. Fred is Fred. Harry maguire is harry maguire. they are trying but they just arent as good as the players they are unable to get the ball off.I remember 'lazy' was often something levelled at Ozil and then people looked at his running stats. And then it became clear that it was just something said about him because its just how he physically looks playing football. its just tiresome to hear it rehashed all the time, especially about man united at the moment.

pundits are there for match analysis in fairness. if they just go on to throw out "entertaining" sound bites then they shouldnt be there. Ian wright is a great example of someone who got a lot better the more he did it. (Ex toffee tim cahill was great whenever he was on motd)

I have no issues with your viewpoint but as a rule, I do not need to listen to mostly, what I already know; especially when the start of the chat ends up in meaningless garbage. There are a few I will take some time on, cahill being a good example, but not many in all fairness.

i just think to imply a player isnt playing for the badge or the shirt or doesnt care abut the club etc etc is just becasue a lot of pundits played for clubs that arent at the level they were at as players and so when they see a poor peformance they think back to what they were used to seeing.

I think thas what Keane is trying to say. It should matter how good you are. It's not the quality. They players knew the game was up after the 3rd and didn't give it all they had. Keane wouldn't have let it happen and he's saying It's need more leaders who won't let it happen.

My side for GW29 and already moved Bowen to Kulu. I have 1 mil ITB. Anything worth changing?
    RAMSDALE Sa
    Livra Rudiger TAA (Sais Digne)
    KULU SALAH SAKA RAPH Foden
    KANE Watkins Broja

9 players for GW30 so reluctant to move away from those atm. I am concerned with Wolves TBH

I'm pretty set on doing Son -> Kulu and Jimi -> Kane with 2 FT's. Held off on obvious Robbo to James last week, which I regret, so determined to play a bit more aggressive this week (and for the rest of the season). It gives me the following team with 9 doublers. Good moves or am I being rash getting rid of Son?:

    Ramsdale*
    Trent* - Robbo *- White*
Salah* (TC) - Saka*- Raphinha - Coutinho - Kulu*
    Wood* - Kane*

    Bench: Dubravka; Broja, Digne, Kilman

Bowen, Weghorst, Laporte to Kulu, Doc and Lacca -8?

I dont have FH to use in 30 so brings in three players that double and then dont blank.

    Thoughts?

Seems good to me. +6 matches x2 points for showing up = +12 which is more than -8.

will give me this team for GW29

      Sanchez
      Trent Doc Tierney Cancelo
      James Son Kulu Mo Saka
      Lacca

Pope Cucu Broja Jim (9 doublers, 2 single)

Then for GW 30, i'd look at Pope and Cucu out to two playing guys

      GK
      Tierney NewDef
      Son Saka James Kulu
      Jim Laca

      Thats 9 out in GW30

Can just about do it for -4 with 0.1 to spare.

    Coutinho > Kulu

    1FT 2.9ITB
    Sa (Foster)
    Trent TSilva Tierney (Digne Saiss)

    Best route this week?

    A) Cancelo, Bowen, DDG > Doherty, Son, Foster -8
    B) Tierney, Bowen, King > Doherty, Kulusevski, Lacazette -8

I need to do the Tierney > Doherty move for funds and to open an Arsenal spot for Laca in B.

I like A if Cancelo is out GW29. And despite Kulu's popularity, I still think Son is the better pick.

Think I prefer B but if Cancelo is out the I guess you have to go with A.

I’m considering Cancelo, Son & King to Doherty, Kulu & Kane for a -8 hit.

In isolation Son is obviously a better pick than Kulusevski, that's clear. But there's also a structural aspect unless you still have the wildcard. It is probable that having three Spurs will be beneficial until the end of the season now. They have 12 games remaining, more than most. Fixtures are good - only 1 game against the top-3.

If you combine Kane, Son, defender as your three then you'll be under constant budget pressure to downgrade one. But Kane OR Son + Kulusevski is much more sustainable. And let's face it, FPL got their pricing wrong with Kulusevski, he should have come in a 7m at least (as I said at the time) and the only question was how soon he'd become first choice - which he now has.

So, do you have Kane? If you do, then (B). If not, then (A). 🙂

        I do have Kane.

But budget issues I don't foresee as a problem tbh. My team value is over 107m. And structurally, I like where I am especially once DDG becomes Foster and don't see myself needing cover.

Being able to afford Son over Kulu is one of the benefits of my TV and I feel like it can be leveraged for an advantage.

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 10 Years

And when you want a City midfielder? Or a Chelsea midfielder? Or a 3rd Liverpool player? What then?

Don't kid yourself, your TV can't pay for Son over Kulusevski. Most of your competitors will be within 1m of you in terms of actual spending power because a lot of your 107m is locked up in players you won't be selling any time soon. It maybe buys you Saka over Martinelli is all.

If it’s looking likely that Cancelo is okay, would you think about bench boosting De Gea, Cancelo, Weghorst and Dennis this week? Kind of getting fed up with having a full playable fifteen and I’d like to start moving more money into a first eleven.

I feel the train has left the platform when it comes to DGW's after GW31.
Especially for teams in Europe. I would stick with the old faithfuls of Spurs Arsenal and Chelski but don't jump around IMO. A twinkling of Leicester maybe but rotation and injuries are going to start hurting.
With the foxes, toffees and Burnley have a whole load, what are you actually chasing?
How many of the above 3 are you intending to get in by GW31.
For me an enabler in Gordon, who I might get this week, 1 Burnley, maybe the keeper and Madi/Barnes then see the season out i think.
28 hits are enough for me this year. I will try to hold onto a 20k rank.

Indeed, Eve/Bur doubles are perfect for whipping out the old caveats. Gordon is fine enabler if you have him but agree there's not much value there otherwise. Wont have any of these assets myself.

For Leicester, would love to pick up Maddison in 30 - could potentially pair him with Barnes in 33 if no doubles for Ars/Tot/Che. Saka, Kane, James and probably Tierney are long-term holds, can hop on/off Martinelli/Kulusevski/Son/Havertz

You are on the same page as me. Madi is a key fitness component. Vardy is a wait and see I think. Struggling to afford Kane and son but I could get away with Vardy and son. Vardy will have minutes limited though.
