The FPL Eye Test: Who are the best Man City players for Gameweek 36?

Stevie of EyeTestFPL casts the spotlight on more Fantasy Premier League (FPL) options that have caught his attention, using ‘eye test’ screenshots and information from our Premium Members Area.

Manchester City, who are among 12 teams to ‘double’ in Gameweek 36, are the focus of his latest piece.

It is extremely difficult to predict Pep Guardiola’s line-up on a match-to-match basis as the Catalan coach often picks a team not only tailored to the opposition but with an eye on minutes in between domestic and UEFA Champions League games.

Due to the amount of rotation expected across Wednesday’s tie in Madrid and then in Double Gameweek 36, I am going to focus on the more ‘nailed-on’ assets and exclude the likes of Gabriel Jesus (£8.6m) and Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m), who despite being in great form, might be rotated interchangeably on the right flank.

Talismanic Kevin De Bruyne

In spite of his weekend benching (or even because of it, as his occasional ‘rest’ is now out of the way), Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) is, in my opinion, Manchester City’s best asset to own given the amount of influence he exerts on the whole team.

As evident in Gameweek 33 when playing against a rather expansive Brighton team, the Belgian was at his devastating best when released on fast breakaways.

When given the space, he always looked to make runs towards the half-space area, exposing the full-back’s blindside.

However, given how Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers are expected to shut up shop defensively against City in Gameweek 36, the amount of space in behind for De Bruyne to exploit is likely to be reduced.

Despite this, as evident from his inch-perfect delivery to assist Gabriel Jesus, the Belgian playmaker is more than capable of unlocking any low-block defence.

Having created a league-high tally of 11 chances over the last four Gameweeks, almost every passage of play has come through De Bruyne and he is very likely to be involved in City’s goals one way or another.

After a dip in form in the opening half of the campaign, his Fantasy goal involvement stands at 46% in 2022 – meaning that, when he’s been on the pitch, he has scored or assisted almost half of the reigning champions’ goals this calendar year.

Above: The FPL goal involvement of premium midfielders in 2022. De Bruyne is nearly level with Riyad Mahrez and Son Heung-min, with Diogo Jota the only player featured who has an FPL goal involvement of over 50%.

It's incredible that Southampton could get relegated!

True but technically so could Villa and Brentford if they pick up no more points and Everton win 3 or 4 of their last 5. I guess Southampton really have only had one fairly brief period of good form this season (followed by a period of awful form which they're arguably still on). Apart from that they've been very mixed.

True but Villa has 5 fixtures and they need 1 point.Southampton has 3 fixtures and the only fixture i think they can get that point is now vs Brentford.

And didn't 40pts represent an unofficial "safety" from relegation? Crazy.

Across 36 and 37 - who would you prefer?

    A. James and Richarlison
    B. Cancelo and Weghorst

    1. Paqueta Rice

Cancelo is the best pick of those and Weghosrt by far the worst. I think A

    0.8m ITB - 2FT - BB36

    Ramsdale
    TAA Robbo Cancelo Laporte
    Salah Saka Kulu Raph
    Kane Pukki

    Foster - Ramsey Doherty* Cucho*

Doherty + Cucho > Nketiah + 4.9m defender for the BB? Any thoughts on who that defender might be (looking at Mina/Myko/Coleman, Ake, Justin, Davies) not an awful lot to pick from.

I was looking at sub 5m defenders & couldn't really find anyone I liked who doubles this week. Leicester are just a nightmare to pick from, I have no idea who's nailed to start 2. If you dont have FH remaining, maybe a Palace defender could work?

None of those 3 are outperforming Salah. Salah has more points than all of them the last 5 GWs and could still get the highest scoring FPL season ever. He's more nailed and easily the best captain choice.

      • 3 Years

Depends on what you do with the cash. Matip is a great option but TAA just had a rest so should be nailed from here onwards. You never know with Matip, I doubt Klopp will change a formula that has worked but there's always a chance that he prefers Matip to Konate for the FAC final and rests him in the league against Villa

      1. TanN
        • 3 Years
        1 year, 11 months ago

If I did do TAA to Matip it would give me £3.2m itb

I could use this to do:
        Dewsbury-Hall to Maddison/Zaha

        Or
        Broja to Jesus

          • 3 Years

Hmmm it's decent but not sure it's necessary, you could do it next week for Palace's double, you already have KDH for the double and him and Maddison may only play once anyway. I do like Broja to Jesus though, although as you know that will come with a risk

3 Chelsea and worried about FA cup rotation for 36. Also no City cover.

    White/Mount/Werner ➡ Cancelo/Foden/Nketiah for - 8. What do you think about it?

I kinda like this moves if White won't be fit, because I also expect single appearance from Chelsea guys. They are toothless at the moment and I'm not sure if Tuchel will turn it around in a week. Yes, I understand City players could be rotated too but I'd still rather try my luck with them, as they need to win all remaining games to win the title. Meanwhile Nketiah is playing good and doing all the right things, except converting his chances. I honestly think he's a great value pick and owners were unlucky he didn't get attacking returns so far.

With the gw37 doubles not that enticing, is there a stronger case for free hitting into gw38 to gain a competitive edge with variations in squads to play into and to load up on the premiums with something to play for?

There certainly could be but I think GW38 is a bit too messy generally. There are a lot of freak results and a lot of rotation with some players that might have seen next to no minutes all season getting games. All depends on what's at stake too. It looks like the title race will go down to the wire but 4th place may be sewn up if Spurs have a bad week and needless to say Everton's next 2 GWs are huge for them

I think I'm leaning to 37 still. Find it hard to see the title race being decided before 38 at thia point, and even if Arsenal beat Spurs, I think Son/Saka are fine to keep for 38 even with nothing to play for

Would Chelsea assets rotate as much as we think for DGW 36? Top four race is still on!
    Cheers

I have Mount in my team. If I had unlimited transfers I would sell him. Since I dont have unlimited transfers Im keeping.

        Current thoughts are
        Raphina
        Maddison
        Gordon

All would help fund Laporte and Richarlson upgrades
