Learning from ‘The Great and The Good’ FPL managers ahead of Gameweek 36

Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead continues with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this year are the Scouts Joe LepperNeale RiggGeoff Dance, and Tom Freeman, FPL Wire’s Zophar, from the Hall of Fame Fabio BorgesFPLMatthewYavuz Kabuk and Tom Stephenson, Blackbox’s Az and Mark Sutherns, FPL “celebrities” LTFPL AndyMagnus Carlsen and FPL General plus last year’s mini league winner Les Caldwell.

“Son-day, Bloody Son-day”

You too could’ve been the victim of blood-red arrow this week if you missed out on the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder’s haul this Son-day.

We also saw two heavy-hitting benchings with the undroppable Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) become, well, droppable, while the safety of Kevin De Bruyne‘s (£11.9m) starts are beginning to look decidedly unsafe.

The lead-up to the Gameweek had seen a huge amount of excitement about Philippe Coutinho (£7.1m) but he proved to be just another Villain. Richarlison (£7.5m) also showed a bit too much flair, while we ended the weekend with the Norwich/Fulham Premier League exchange trip.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Az stays top but the gap between him and the FPL Terminator, Fabio Borges, is down to just two points. He has been relentless in his pursuit despite a misplaced armband on Salah and Jordan Pickford (£4.8m) was his hero this week with his first double-digit return of the season.

I am pleased to report that FPL’s equivalent of the Last of the Summer Wine, Mark and Joe, were back to their best this week as they were Gameweek 35’s top scorers.

“Compo” Sutherns tripled up on Spurs with Harry Kane (£12.4m), Dejan Kulusevski (£6.3m) and of course a Son Heung-min (£11.0m) captaincy, while “Cleggy” Joe only doubled but had an inspired transfer for Ollie Watkins (£7.5m).

Zophar is one to watch, as well, after a late surge. He has saved his chips for the final weeks and has moved from outside the top 50,000 to 15,000. An eighth top 10,000 finish is within reach!

Magnus Carlsen continues to win the award for the most differential armband picks, with Matty Cash (£5.3m) his money shot this weekend. Geoff laid a successful bet on the Siu superstar but Neale and Tom Freeman lost their gamble with Pep Roulette.

TRANSFERS

This is a summary of the transfers for this week:

  • Az – Cash (Amartey)
  • LTFPL Andy – Foden, Robertson (Havertz, Digne)
  • Fabio Borges – No Transfers
  • Joe Lepper – Watkins, Son(Wood, Fernandes)
  • Geoff Dance – Mings (Regulion)
  • FPL General – No Transfers
  • Les Caldwell – Watkins, Gordon (Weghorst, Willock)
  • Magnus Carlsen – No Transfers
  • Mark Sutherns – Son (Fernandes)
  • FPL Matthew – No Transfers
  • Neale Rigg – No Transfers
  • Tom Freeman – No Transfers
  • Tom Stephenson – No Transfers
  • Yavuz Kabuk – No Transfers
  • Zophar – Coutinho (Havertz)

TEMPLATE

The template for The Great and The Good is as follows, with the numbers in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:

  • Foster (8), Schmeichel (6)
  • Alexander-Arnold (14), Cancelo (12), Robertson (10), James (9), Alonso (6)
  • Salah (12), Saka (12), Kulusevski (9), Mount (8), Son (5)
  • Pukki (8), Kane (6), Nketiah/Broja (5)

The forward line, outside Kane, still looks dire, but I would wager we will see Ollie “woodwork” Watkins and the on-form Richarlison soon come into contention dependent on whether the FA takes any action against the Everton striker.

CHIP PLAY

Gameweek 36 will see the next round of hot chip action, with most either Free Hitting or playing their Bench Boost, so I’ve had a quick look at where The Great and The Good are with their chips this season:

FPL Matthew, Yavuz Kabuk, Neale Rigg, Tom Freeman and Fabio Borges are the managers with a decision to make going into next weekend as they are the only ones with both the Free Hit and the Bench Boost at their disposal. This could be key for all of them: FPL Matthew and Yavuz will be hoping it spurs them onto another top 10,000 finish whilst it could be crucial for Fabio in his ongoing battle with Az.

There have been varying degrees of success with the chips this season. The Bench Boosters will have done well to topple FPL General’s very impressive 28 points back in Gameweek 28 and, as for the Free Hitters, Az showed how it was done in the same Gameweek with 133 points but then how not to do it in Gameweek 34 – I suspect the word “variance” will be overused by many a manager depending on the outcome.

CONCLUSION

An exciting week ahead with the age-old question of whether the Free Hit is mightier than the Bench Boost finally to be answered.

Those without a chip should probably visit their local garden centre as there will be a heady mix of big scores and big benchings to come.

Anyway, that’s all from me for now, and remember, don’t have nightmares.

    Afternoon all,

Which for the following would you prefer?

    A) Maddison & Gelhardt > Gordon & Jesus -4
    B) Kulusevski > Foden

Ok thanks. With no BB left means I'll be playing:

        Ramsdale
        TAA / Cancelo / Laporte
        Salah / Kulusevski / Gordon / Saka / Havertz
        Kane / Jesus

        Dubravka / White / Mateta / Schar

Probably been widely discussed already, but any news on when FA hearing regarding Richarlison potential ban is set to be?

Not an entirely similar incident but might be worth noting that It took the FA 4 months to ban Eric Dier for jumping into the crowd and confronting that fan.

Differential to the pack doesn't matter. Its differential to him as McGrubbs says. If your teams are too similar he'll wipe the floor with those two chips. If you get the differentials (to him) right, you can be laughing - or it could go the other way...

Cheers, He’s already indicated that he’s BBing 36. I was planning on taking a -8 this week but what I'm also concerned about is that he just blocks me in FH37 because he knows my team. Would you spread out the transfers in this scenario?

        Agreed.

I'm in the same situation accept I'm behind by 20 with FH and BB and the leader used all chips.

I'm feeling quite confident I will surpass him, possibly in 37. Then I will FH 38

    Ram Sa
    TAA Robbo Cancelo Cash Amartey
    Salah Son Saka Kuku Coutinho
    Nketiah Weggy Broja

Bench Amartey, Weggy and Broja and its a solid team. I guess Kulu to Foden might be a good move if you downgrade Broja to a Gelhart (or similar) or even Sa. Not the easiest double for Spurs after all.

Robbo bit of a risk on gametime perhaps, but I probably wouldn't take a hit to lose him given his form.

Difficult to say as I think there should be a third player in each of those.

B for 36 alone and especially if you have a FH left.

      1. VTown
        • 3 Years
        1 year, 10 months ago

For context it would be Barnes to KDB, Kane to Pukki with 2fts.
        FH 37
Would probably go KDB to Son for the Norwich fixture in 38.

Hmmm, Kane loves a goal in the NLD although Barnes out is probably a key move. What about Foden over KDB and keep Kane?

          1. VTown
            • 3 Years
            1 year, 10 months ago

Would be tricky to get foden while keeping Kane.
Would need to be something like Barnes to Foden
            Mount to 6.5 mid
            Or Rudiger > matip
            Barnes > foden
            Shchar > 4.1 def
            For a -4
My original plan was just Barnes > Gordon
            Broja > Rich

Barnes and Mount to Foden and Kulu not a bad move. Original plan looks okay too if you are sufficiently convinced by Everton.

                Already got kulu haha
                I'm actually warming to
                Rudiger > matip
                Barnes > foden
                Schar > amartey

If Robertson starts tonight, the collective thinking is that he is a shoe-in to be rested in one game in 36. Alonso could also be rested as the Leeds game is only a few days before the FA Cup Final but possibly less certain with no midweek Chelsea game this week.

Dropped Havertz for Coutinho last week. Eyeing up James to Matip (or even cheaper) to fund improvements elsewhere.

Not only does it feel like the Leeds game will see rotation, but they seem off the pace - although that could mean Tuchel wants to get a bit of rhythm before the cup final, rather than rotate.

Selling James. Can't seem to keep clean sheets very much, going to be a rotation minefield against Leeds. Just don't see the point in holding.

Really not sure if I should go Son > KDB

I can keep Son and also get Foden.

    What do you think?

    A. KDB
    B. Keep Son and get Foden

    Thanks

B, losing Son on this form seems suicidal. These fixtures suite Son pretty well especially with Liverpool and Arsenal’s high lines.

I thought about doing that, but decided there were better ways to fund KDB.

            Dubravka

            Laporte / Cancelo / Robertson / TAA

            Mount / Havertz / Son / Salah / Saka

            Pukki

            Jakupovic / Cash / Broja / Gelhardt

Worried about losing Robbo, but its possible he gets benched for next game.

                A. Robbo > Matip
                B. Robbo > Alonso
                C. Someone Else!

                Thanks mate.

Depending on how much Robbo plays today, I'm thinking of downgrading Robbo to Matip, and Werner to Richarlson/Watkins to allow me to upgrade Havertz to KDB (-4),

I would have to downgrade Robbo to 4.3 defender.

            Havertz > De Bruyne and
            Pukki > Nketiah

            To many transfers I think.

    Schmeichel
    TAA, Laporte, Matip
    Salah, KDB, Foden, Saka
    Vardy, Rich, Nketiah
    Sub Delph and cheapest possible

Not picking Chelsea or Spurs due to rotation/fixtures respectively. Can't afford Son swap. Hoping Arsenal and Vardy go mad against Norwich.

I'm fighting for pride and well behind at the moment, need some maverick moves. Would do you the following to BB this gameweek then FH next gameweek?

Kane, Broja, Zaha, Barnes, Ait-Nouri -> Richarlison, Dennis, Luis Diaz, Mount, Alonso (-12)

    Would give me:

    Ramsdale Foster
    TAA Cancelo Rudiger Alonso White
KDB (c) Diaz Mount Saka Kulu
    Richarlison Watkins Dennis

Or have I gone completely crazy? Annoyed I missed the deadline last week, cost me -4...!

Barnes Zaha and Kane are each capable of outscoring any of the 5 you intend to bring in… so I don’t like it. Barnes and Zaha are the type of punts I would be taking if chasing.

    Ramsdale
    TAA Robbo Cancelo James
    Salah Saka Kulu Coutinho
    Kane Weghorst
(Dubravka Ramsey Schar + 4.5 fwd)
    0itb 0 ITB

Bit of an odd spot with no chips left. These are the options I can see, but happy to take alternatives. Bit messy. I could add A to either of C or D for a second hit.
    A. James to Laporte.
    B. Weghorst+Schar to Laporte+Gelhardt (-4)
    C. Kane+Coutinho/Kulusevski to Son/KDB+Richarlison (-4)
    D. Kulu+Weg to Gordon+Richarlison (-4) or Foden+Gelhardt (-4)

If you could go for any mid for GW36+38 (FH37) up to 6m who would it be? I have Son, KDB, Martinelli and Saka in the other spots.

Tempted to punt on Lookman but any Leicester seem a big risk and if they get to the ECL final I expect huge rotation in GW38 with the final 3 days later. Wondering about maybe punting on Harrison despite the tough fixtures, could even have a random punt on Thiago or Keita with a Liverpool spot spare. Considering just getting Gordon. Slim pickings.
