FPL top 10k: How many managers used the Free Hit in Gameweek 37?

For the final time this season, we look at the squad make-ups and chip usage of the world’s leading Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

We’re again turning to the brilliant LiveFPL for this feature, a site that contains heaps of useful information beyond overall and top 10,000 figures.

The top 10k in the current overall rankings are the primary focus of this piece, although the 1,000 names in LiveFPL’s ‘Legendary Managers’ list – the historic cream of the crop, much like our own Hall of Fame – are also examined.

Between the two groups, these are the managers who can offer us a better gauge of FPL ownership and chip strategy, as opposed to the overall figures that are skewed by the vast numbers of untouched ‘ghost teams’.

TOP 10K AND ‘ELITE’ MANAGERS: GAMEWEEK 37 CAPTAINCY

Above: Gameweek 37 captaincy stats for the all-time greats (right) and the top 10k (left)

There were the usual contrasting fortunes for the main captaincy candidates at the weekend, with over 40% of the top 10k enjoying a double digit-haul and just north of 50% seeing their nominated skipper blank.

More matches await for most of the leading contenders on Thursday, of course, but the 20% who backed Son Heung-min (£11.1m) will have to make do with a rare three points from the South Korean.

Richarlison (£7.6m) was the only player who had an effective ownership (EO) in excess of 100% in both the top 10k and the elite list above, although Son’s EO also entered triple figures in the former.

READ MOREWhat is ‘effective ownership’ (EO) and why is it so widely talked about in FPL?

TOP 10K: CHIP USAGE

There were a smattering of Wildcards, Triple Captains and Bench Boosts activated but Gameweek 37 chip activity mostly centred around the Free Hit.

Not far off 40% of the leading Fantasy bosses activated this chip ahead of Sunday’s deadline.

Free Hitters are already well up on the competition, having scored an average of 25 more points than non-chip users in Gameweek 37 so far.

However, those managers who didn’t activate a chip are more likely to own assets from Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, who we have yet to see in action.

The vast majority of managers have now maxed out their chip allowance but 5.5% have one left to play on the final day, around 60% of whom have a Free Hit still to burn.

TOP 10K AND ‘ELITE’ MANAGERS: TEMPLATE SQUAD FOR GAMEWEEK 37

There was a huge swing in the template squad from Gameweek 36 but ownership figures would have been greatly affected by the volume of Free Hits, more of which below.

Only six players – Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m), Joao Cancelo (£7.2m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.4m), Son, Bukayo Saka (£6.7m) and Richarlison – kept their places as managers went all in on ‘doublers’, Harry Kane (£12.4m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m).

OWNERSHIP STATS FOR THE 1,000 ‘LEGENDARY MANAGERS’ IN GAMEWEEK 36

TOP 10K: TEMPLATE ‘FREE HIT’ SQUAD FOR GAMEWEEK 37

Free Hitters generally favoured a 3-4-3 in Gameweek 37, with this being one of the few match rounds where fielding three forwards actually looked appealing.

There were triple-ups on Villa and Everton, with Son, Kane and De Bruyne the only ‘single Gameweekers’ to feature outside of bench fodder.

Relative differentials Jamie Vardy (£10.3m) and Ollie Watkins (£7.5m), who were in fewer than 20% of the top 10k squads, were the main success stories outside of this template on Sunday.

20 points off ML leader, I know still games to be played this GW but he mainly has me covered apart from Zaha.

20 points going into final game of the season. Can it be caught? Tough.

Haha. That point of the season. I could've pulled ahead of mine yesterday (if I hadn't capped Son...) - but he brought in Maddison to block any gain.

When teams are so similar the right (C) makes all the difference.

Think i caught 20 points last season by bringing in Mane C instead of going with Mo. Think Liverpool won 2-0 and Mane scored both.

Similar scenario but 29 points of 3rd place in my mini league as 3rd place is the cutoff point for prize. Have salah, richarlison and tielemans who i would like to ship out for vardy, mahrez and luis diaz. Do you think this is worth a minus 8?

From liverpool and man city gweek 38, which midfielders do you think will get a start and score more from their respective teams? Mahrez, sterling, kdb for city mids? Mane, salah, diaz, jota for liverpool?

It depends on who gets some rest against Southamtpon and if Salah returns. De Bruyne is the safest City pick obviously and I wouldn't even bother with others at this point.

This makes sense. A safe way to play gw38 if you want to say swap Salah to Mane.

Probably can't afford Son in that scenario and one premium of Kane or Vardy too.

Thanks guys. Have a dilemma to contend with. Would've loved Son since spurs are chasing top 4 and him being a golden boot contender. Might be given penalty duties. Any chance of leicester repeating their monster score against soton deadline day? Vardy might be a punt after all

      KDB.

Mahrez and Sterling could be a risk if Jesus, Foden and Grealish are picked as the creative players alongside Cancelo and guys like Rodri and Silva all likely to start.

I just saw that Guardiola didn't use a single sub yesterday. Sterling, Foden and Gundogan could probably do something in 27 minutes after they equalized to 2:2, don't you think? I don't understand this guy at all from time to time.

Don't. I posted on last thread I chose not to do Jesus > Vardy (-4 after Salah to Son) and I benched Bowen instead of Cancelo (I'm a West Ham fan). I figured if we got thumped (City going for title) at least my FPL would do well. If we won (which at half time I was bouncing - went to the game too) I'd be happy with the result and stuff FPL lol!

All spectacular stuff as a West Ham fan.

I thought that Bowen would do well and i also thought that it could be 2-2. I commented to that effect about 6 days or so ago.

A great outcome for real football.

Oh 100% and mate at half time I knew in the back of my mind Cancelo had 0 points and I don't care. Was living the dream! Now our UEL hang on us winning and Man U not.

I'm a fool for not starting Bowen. I've benched him once all season and that was against L'Pool when he played < 60 mins.

It was a hard decision to make. We were camped in our own box for the majority of the game (not helped by the shambolic officiating) and to me I wasn't sure how the game would go so I played it logically.

if ifs and buts where candy and nuts it would be green arrows every week. there is way too much entitlement on here when it comes to chance moments not going your way. lots yesterday lamenting son captain choice. Son had by his standards a terrible game against burnley but got two chances against a top goalie. one was hit straight at him. thats not unlucky, son probably should have done better on one of them and was kept quiet for most of the game anyway. ditto mahrez. he could have scored but it was a useless pen and an easy save.

It can. But the transfer allowance (10) for the playoffs is actually quite generous - you can usually get 7-8 players per match. So I prefer to use it just before end of group stage (played it last night). Good luck for the run-in!

You'd need to take at least two chances that come off.
One with the captain, one differential that delivers.
Also the two main captains fail would be grand for you.

Skimming through FPL Twitter and it’s quite clear that there are some people who are not well/stable with very unrealistic expectations and an ability to understand that it’s just a game with a strong luck component.

I love FPL but at the end of the day it’s just an extra bit of fun on top of the main hobby which is watching football. If you’re having a public meltdown/depressive thoughts because you picked player x instead of player y in a bloody online game its time to find a new hobby.

Then stop putting in so much effort and time where the rewards are not guaranteed. It's like gambling in this sense, but with time. Even if you win all your ML, the feeling is empty and pointless after. You're left feeling 'is that it?'

Thats what I'll be doing 🙂

Ever since I have started playing, I have always wondered why and how anyone can play this kind of game for over a decade. Wanted to feel the same thrill but never got a chance to feel that. I guess I was doing something wrong...

      It's a fair perspective.

Maybe it'll teach people that you shouldn't stress about events you have no actual influence over, once you have made a choice.

I doubt it tho and I'd be lying if i said team selections and starting formations and points didn't distort watching football too. As well as enhance certain depths in teams you might ignore.

The stress for high rank among content creators is actually damaging their mental health and seems to have really escalated this year imo. It seems like certain people are unhappy if they are doing poorly, and unhappy if they are doing well because it’s stressful - a no-win situation and just a very sad state of affairs that requires a step back.

I keep playing because the fun exists whether I do well or not - I like to keep in mind that nobody else cares about my rank, and when the dust settles and I look back at the season in a few months, neither will I.

Some people have let fantasy take over their lives. Its been my best season this year in the top 14,000 but didn't enjoy it has much has I have in previous seasons. I've decided I won't be playing next year.

I’ve noticed over the past two seasons, I’ve drifted from having fun with this silly game into putting an unhealthy amount of time into FPL. I’ve been putting too much value in my results each weekend.

It’s great when my team does well, being obsessive means my highs are really highs. But my captain blanking, or a hit not paying off, or my ML rival getting some bullsh** penalty really shouldn’t warrant me being in a bad mood, even for only a few minutes.

I’m going to step back next season. Transfer decisions on deadline day. Put the time spent reading articles and listening to podcasts into something more productive.

I’m also going to try and take a step back in terms of the amount of time i spend thinking about fpl at least. Make it a fun sort of exercise where I only allow myself 20/30 mins each week before deadline to process all information and make a transfer.

I only watch football for FPL, but that’s really because I like football but I don’t support anyone. FPL let’s me care about the matches and that makes it exciting.

I enjoy the World Cup because I get to support England (as depressing as that is) and the CL because I generally go for the English teams.

There’s craziness throughout football, people get attacked over which bunch of men they support and it makes it more ridiculous that the players themselves don’t hold the same rivalries as the fans.

I don’t see any difference in getting upset that your team lost, or you got a red arrow, or your team didn’t win the league or you finished outside the top 100k. At least with your FPL team you have some control as you’re actually part of it.

120 mins then a quick turnaround is a big deal, especially when you have a UCL final coming up.

Salah went off injured. VVD & Robertson protected too. They're clearly being saved as not to risk them.

Lots of rotation. GD not a factor anymore; could have been stronger otherwise.

Expect a much rotated team. Its fairly obvious.

Is taking a hit on the last week a bad idea? I'm 7 points behind in my ML. Thoughts on the best option from below?

    A) Salah > Mane/Diaz
    B) Salah > Maddison
    C) Salah & Jesus > Diaz and Kane (-4)
    D) Salah & Jesus > Diaz and Vardy (-4)

    Ramsdale
    TAA - Matip - James - Laporte - Cancelo
    Salah - Son - Kuluveaki - Saka
    Jesus

    Dubravka - Gordon - Weghorst - Kamara

Lukaku could actually be a very good captain call this weekend as long as he remembers to stand perfectly motionless 6 yards out and let some of the 100 shots Chelsea are going to have deflect off his head/knee/@rse into the Watford net and not do anything stupid like try to kick the ball otherwise he might dislodge the corner flag.

Allison has a knock, but is important, so will start
    Gomez - Konate - Matip - Tsimikas
    Henderson, Milner, Keita
    Diaz - Firmino - Jota

Hendo to get only 65 min.
    Diaz also to get subbed.

      No Mane or Robbo?

      Or Trent?

Is the title race over or have Liverpool decided they don't want to win it after 36 games?

I thought it was just Fabinho, Salah and VVD out with various injuries.

A 59 point ML lead got obliterated to 13 points yesterday...

2nd place FH and went heavy on DGWers - Digne, Maddison, Vardy, Richarlison all posting big scores.

Could have been worse if he had captained one of them rather than matching me on Cash!

Serious error made bringing in Zaha (due to Man Utd final game) rather than Richarlison. Not even sure if hindsight-y or just a bad FPL move given the widespread backing of Richarlison...
