Is the last day of the Premier League season a goal-fest?

The 2021/22 Premier League season draws to a close on Sunday, with many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers anticipating a high-scoring round of fixtures.

But are there actually any facts to back this theory up?

We’ve analysed the final day of the last 10 Premier League seasons to find out.

SEASONAVERAGE GOALS PER GAME IN GAMEWEEK 38SEASON AVERAGE
2020/213.12.69
2019/203.32.72
2018/193.62.82
2017/183.12.68
2016/173.72.80
2015/163.52.70
2014/152.92.57
2013/142.82.77
2012/133.62.80
2011/123.22.81

For the sixth season running, the final day of the 2020/21 campaign produced a minimum of 30 goals, with 31 from the 10 matches played in Gameweek 38.

However, the most goals scored in a final Gameweek over the last 10 seasons is 37, with Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City all scoring five goals or more in 2016/17.

So, whatever the last games hold, recent history does suggest we’ll see a few more goals than usual.

Meanwhile, the highest-scoring game on the final day in the last 10 years was the epic 5-5 draw between West Bromwich Albion and Manchester United in Sir Alex Ferguson’s last game in charge.

Notably, Spurs have been involved in four of the six most recent goal-fests, with Leicester City featuring in two of the last three.

FINAL DAY GAMES WITH SIX OR MORE GOALS IN THE LAST 10 SEASONS:

  • West Bromwich Albion 5-5 Manchester United – 2012/13
  • West Ham United 4-2 Reading – 2012/13
  • Leicester City 5-1 Queens Park Rangers – 2014/15
  • Stoke City 6-1 Liverpool – 2014/15
  • Newcastle United 5-1 Tottenham Hotspur – 2015/16
  • Chelsea 5-1 Sunderland – 2016/17
  • Hull City 1-7 Tottenham Hotspur – 2016/17
  • Tottenham Hotspur 5-4 Leicester City – 2017/18
  • Crystal Palace 5-3 Bournemouth – 2018/19
  • Leicester City 2-4 Tottenham Hostpur – 2020/21

WHAT’S ON THE LINE IN GAMEWEEK 38?

Man City v Liverpool team news: Jota in for Diaz

The Premier League season is heading for an epic finale and there is still plenty to play for at both ends of the table as the campaign enters its final week.

The fight for fourth, the battle to avoid the drop, the tussle for the final UEFA Europa League qualifying spot and – if Liverpool don’t lose on Tuesday – the title race will all go down to the final day.

Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool, Man City, West Ham United, Man Utd, Leeds United and Burnley are the clubs who will have something tangible to contest, while Everton will be added to that group if they fail to beat Crystal Palace on Thursday.

Suspended for 6 weeks, but the season is only expected to start a week earlier and finish a week later than the current season. So it's going to be a very cramped schedule.

It will interesting to see what FPL does regarding chips, will we get an extra WC to use when the season resumes like we did after the Covid break ?

Instead of a free WC. How about a chip that allows you to transfer ONLY any players flagged following World Cup injuries etc.

That's what I'd liked to have seen over the last couple of seasons when we have been losing members of our squads to Covid through no fault of our own.

I guess the 2nd WC would at least be made available from resumption (26/12) rather than GW19..?

Possibly but that would mess up the strategy for those of us who save that WC to set up BB.

    5. Deulofail
      • 8 Years

Everyone will just use the WC to try and increase their value, the worst part of the FPL game. Adding another WC will be no different. I would like to see some other change to keep the game a bit purer in fantasy terms.

Maybe allow us to save 3-5 FTs this season, making it a bit less obvious to play WC at that point.

Or maybe WC should be 5FTs instead of unlimited, then give us a couple of them.

Or just remove the WC chip and see how we deal with it! Could have a larger bench with a separate bench budget? And maybe allow us to play players in any position and pick up points based on the position they play (+ adjust the point system a bit).

Ideally, the FPL game would suspend transfers during the World Cup so we don't have to resent the game making us signing in constantly to try and make value gains

There will be 50-60% less people playing the game if they complicate it so much.

        1. Deulofail
          • 8 Years
          1 year, 10 months ago

Changing from 2 bankable FTs to 3 doesn't add any complexity to the game mechanics. I'm not saying they should make all these changes.

That said, they aren't afraid to complicate things by adding the AOA or FH chips, nor by adding WC or FH chips midseason with a new rule that you can't do FHs back to back.

To get in Son I need to downgrade TAA - that gives me 4.6m to sepnd on a defender. I have Schar and Mina on the bench.

Tsimikas looks like a reasonable bet. Woudl go with Sessegnon, but I'll have Kulu and Kane alongside Son.

certain men's( Gordon Ramsey and Granit Xaka im looking at you ) obsession with testicles/cajones/ nuts/big bollocks as being some kind of totem of your ability to handle pressure and 'man up ' or grow a pair seems really redundant now. in fact it was probably redundant to begin with. As some one who has witnessed child birth 'having a pair' in probably the most stressfull situation on earth doesn't really help

“If someone isn’t ready for this game, stay at home. It doesn’t matter the age. If you’re not ready or you’re nervous, stay on the bench, stay at home, don’t come here. We need people to have the balls to come here and play. We knew this game was maybe the most important for us but, with a performance like this, it’s not acceptable.”

It's also a convenient way for a player to excuse themselves from losses and their own failures and shirking their own responsibilities. Fernandes has done it a few times this season. "We're so sorry, some people here aren't fit to wear the shirt, if you're not going to put in 100% then don't play", after himself disappearing and doing next to nothing for a number of games. Or even the classic breaking out of an organised line / press to run like a headless chicken at defenders, leaving gaps behind and exposing the rest of your team but then turning around and shouting at them as if you're great for making a little run and the rest are incompetent. Or just smashing a player for nothing and getting booked and being proud of it like you've helped your side.

Only have 1 space left in the starting 11 and looking to replace Digne and/or Ings. Can do a straight swap for an average player or take a hit to get a premium.

    A) Ings > Toney
    B) Digne > Dier/Jansson/Cucurella
    C) Ings + Digne > Tsimikas + Jesus (-4)
    D) Ings + Digne > James + Nketiah/Origi (-4)

    I like D with Origi

Already have Sess - backline is Matip, Cancelo, Sess

I liking the Origi punt - he can start for maybe Richarlison or be 1st bench so no pressure if he doesn't start. If he does, I could see a haul in his final Anfield match - or maybe I'm just a romantic

    Who should I out?
    A) Salah + Richarlison (play KDH, bench Dennis)
    B) Salah + Dennis (play Rich, bench KDH)

Which FW shoud I transfer in?
    1) Kane

Which MF should I transfer in?
    3) Maddison (outpriced if I sell Dennis instead of Rich!)

Likely yes. But with no VVD either, maybe Klopp wants to have at least one of their regular defenders playing. We'll know soon.

Logically yes, but if VVD is out
I think one of the full backs might start

    Dubravka
    TAA James Laporte Cancelo
    Son Kulu Coutinho Saka
    Richarlison Kane
    (Pickford - Digne Ramsey 4.5fwd)

    A) Coutinho to Mount
    B) Coutinho to Diaz/Jota

    C) A plus Ramsey to Wissa/Eriksen (-4)*
    D) A plus Digne to Alonso (-4)*
    E) A or B plus Richarlison to Toney (-4)*

*In these cases Richarlison benched or sold
