Is the last day of the Premier League season a goal-fest?

The 2021/22 Premier League season draws to a close on Sunday, with many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers anticipating a high-scoring round of fixtures.

But are there actually any facts to back this theory up?

We’ve analysed the final day of the last 10 Premier League seasons to find out.

SEASONAVERAGE GOALS PER GAME IN GAMEWEEK 38SEASON AVERAGE
2020/213.12.69
2019/203.32.72
2018/193.62.82
2017/183.12.68
2016/173.72.80
2015/163.52.70
2014/152.92.57
2013/142.82.77
2012/133.62.80
2011/123.22.81

For the sixth season running, the final day of the 2020/21 campaign produced a minimum of 30 goals, with 31 from the 10 matches played in Gameweek 38.

However, the most goals scored in a final Gameweek over the last 10 seasons is 37, with Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City all scoring five goals or more in 2016/17.

So, whatever the last games hold, recent history does suggest we’ll see a few more goals than usual.

Meanwhile, the highest-scoring game on the final day in the last 10 years was the epic 5-5 draw between West Bromwich Albion and Manchester United in Sir Alex Ferguson’s last game in charge.

Notably, Spurs have been involved in four of the six most recent goal-fests, with Leicester City featuring in two of the last three.

FINAL DAY GAMES WITH SIX OR MORE GOALS IN THE LAST 10 SEASONS:

  • West Bromwich Albion 5-5 Manchester United – 2012/13
  • West Ham United 4-2 Reading – 2012/13
  • Leicester City 5-1 Queens Park Rangers – 2014/15
  • Stoke City 6-1 Liverpool – 2014/15
  • Newcastle United 5-1 Tottenham Hotspur – 2015/16
  • Chelsea 5-1 Sunderland – 2016/17
  • Hull City 1-7 Tottenham Hotspur – 2016/17
  • Tottenham Hotspur 5-4 Leicester City – 2017/18
  • Crystal Palace 5-3 Bournemouth – 2018/19
  • Leicester City 2-4 Tottenham Hostpur – 2020/21

WHAT’S ON THE LINE IN GAMEWEEK 38?

Man City v Liverpool team news: Jota in for Diaz

The Premier League season is heading for an epic finale and there is still plenty to play for at both ends of the table as the campaign enters its final week.

The fight for fourth, the battle to avoid the drop, the tussle for the final UEFA Europa League qualifying spot and – if Liverpool don’t lose on Tuesday – the title race will all go down to the final day.

Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool, Man City, West Ham United, Man Utd, Leeds United and Burnley are the clubs who will have something tangible to contest, while Everton will be added to that group if they fail to beat Crystal Palace on Thursday.

Solid team - will need to see if Diaz plays today. I like Toney or Erikson - not sure on the double up though

Nicely balanced team there, but for me the standout picks are in midfield which is why I am going for 352

Set out the following FH team with the focus on attack. Exact funds to do this, but a few variables still to sort out (i.e. Vardy chances of starting).

    Raya
    Alonso Matip Sess
    Son KDB Diaz Mount Maddison
    Kane Vardy

    Thoughts?

If you're on the fence with Vardy, maybe downgrade Diaz to get Kane or Lukaku in

      1. JELLYFISH

Kane's already there mate. Diaz > Bowen might be an option for Lukaku, but that leaves me with no Liverpool mids which is a concern

          *rubs eyes* ahhhhhh

If you have a solid bench option or two then Diaz Vardy is fine. With Vardy in court today he seems more likely to be rested Thurs than the weekend

Yes Vardy is a wait and see, and there's no clear sign of being priced out of any of these moves anytime soon.

Bench is a bit light though tbf - Tsimikas, Johnson and Richardson

I'd probably drop Raya, Leeds are poor but they're likely going to be desperate to get something from that game so they will attack it, unless Burnley lose on Thursday and they want to risk relying on them losing again on Sunday. Apart from that looks good.

        • 11 Years

Thanks mate, agree re Raya but thats the compromise unfortunately. The alternative is to set out similar to the scout picks, but I just feel the best picks this gw are in midfield.

Which combo do you like better - 2nd player would be first bench:

    A) Tony + Digne
    B) Dier/Jansson/Cucurella + Ings (have Sessegnon)
    C) Alonso + Toney (-4) bench headache here
    D) James + Origi/Nketiah (-4)
    E) Jesus + Sanchez (-4)

Think a strong bench option might be necessary given all the likely rotation (Vardy, Maddie, Richarlison, Matip are my main rotation worries)

I think that's the most sensible option. Only qualm is my ML leader also has Alonso. Looking at his squad, his most obvious transfer is Cash > James so might just have to do it anyways and hope for points elsewhere

Just look at the pre season predictions from pundits, fan channels and most general people in any sort of media, all had Liverpool 4th or missing out on top 4 and that this was the end of the cycle and needed a rebuild of sorts.

No one as such was giving Liverpool a chance at even challenging City or Chelsea for the league and most had United above Liverpool as well.

Yeah people were high on Chelsea after the Lukaku signing, I actually forgot about that...seems like a long time ago now but pundits like Shearer were Predicting Chelsea to win the season, which was just madness

This site is full of anti liverpool people who said klopp didn't know what we were doing and our injuries were no excuse. We were mocked relentlessly on here. They have been silent for a while.

Well, I wonder what they will say now?!
I'll admit Diaz has been a huge game changer, as has Thaigo's up turn in form, but even before that, just VVD back in the team brought Liverpool up to title contenders imo

            100% correct.

It took virg a couple months to get his firm back as well. Look at us this year. Miles better than city. They need haaland to have a chance or someone shoots virg. Otherwise it's chasing quad again next season

            1. Lovren an elevator

Agreed. Pool should be aiming for the quad next season, got the squad for it now too. Imagine if Firmino is fit all season too!
City have looked 2nd best for most of 2022 have they, but if they get over the line, which I'm sure they will, history will remember Pep and his team, potentially being the best in history of the Prem, i mean it will be 4 out of the last 5 years, right? And what with Klopp's Liverpool, this is one of the most competitive times in the league's history. Easily up there with the Fergie vs Wenger era

Klopp is a very, very good manager but whinges all the time.

No-one smart said you were done, we all knew when you have your full strength team, you can challenge for the league etc. As for the ‘anti-Liverpool people’, it’s not so much that, just that your fans act like everything your club does is a miracle. I remember Arsenal getting ravaged by injuries 10/11/12 years ago, with financial restrictions and getting top 4 every year. But Liverpool do it with Phillips and Williams in defence for half a season, it’s some astonishing achievement and miracle? Why?

          1. MYNAMEISBigtopmark.sman
            • 6 Years

Look I will be the first to admit that I am not super familiar with arsenals history and if arsenal had injuries similar to what we had last season I would be genuinely intrigued to go back and see how they fared.

All I can say is that in my 32 years of supporting liverpool I never saw anything close to the crisis we walked through from Oct. Nothing close. Not saying it hasn't happened before but nothing I can compare it too in 32 years of liverpool teams. I think last season was klopps most impressive because of what we went through. It was insane

Oh yeah, remember at the start of the season telling someone on here Leeds would be happy if they survived in the premier league and played good football.

Got told I haven’t a clue about how ambitious their owners are and that top 6 is a realistic goal for them.

I feel like, despite their short numbers with injuries, City are going to offload a decent few players this summer. Haaland is coming in so apart from when they want to play with a false 9 that spot should be sewn up (with Alvarez as backup), but then you have Sterling, Grealish, Mahrez and Jesus competing for the spots on the wings (as well as having Foden and Bernardo who can play there), and then in midfield you have Rodri, Bernardo, KDB and Foden (and this will be after Fernandinho and Gundogan have left). With versatility in defence (Ake + Laporte playing LB, Stones RB) I feel like Zinchenko may want to move too.

Yeah he's been superb for them, he really can play in every role across the midfield which is rare (although Bernardo is certainly giving it a good go). Would he really let Bernardo go? He's been incredible this season, I know there were lots of rumours of him leaving last summer but he seems to have a new lease of life in midfield and doing more defensive work.

Crazy to Let Bernardo go, especially if Gundo goes, there has been a lot of talk about it though...maybe if Barca lose De Jong?

      2. Lovren an elevator

I think you're right. Can't see Jesus staying though, maybe not even Sterling. Mahrez is getting on, he'll probably have one more season. Alvarez looks like a future nailed on star, he will find his way in the team with Haaland, but not next season. I can see in the coming seasons, Pep builds an attack around Haaland, Alvarez, Jack and Phil. Gundo probably leaves. Bilva possibly leaves, as do Zinchenko and Walker.
Gossip is that Guardiola is prioritising a LB, if he signs a good one, Cancelo will surely be nailed on on the RB spot. Also rumours of Matheus Nunes from Sporting, he'll likely be the Fernandinho and even Gundo replacement.

    Son Kulu DeBruyne Maddison Saka
    Kane Richarlison

    4.4 Tsimikas Amartey 5.6

a -8 gets me this. That's a lot of spurs attack and Chelsea defence. Thoughts?

Just realised I could downgrade the bench instead of Trent.

So my question is who scores more, James or Trent?

Tough to say, both played 120 mins on Saturday. If one of them starts their midweek game then go for the other

Prone to change with info of course, but as stands:

    A) Salah -> KDB
    B) Salah, Richarlison -> Diaz, Kane -4

Do you have Son. B could be worth it if you don't mind -4

OR 120k and hoping to break 100 with a FH on GW38

Any time this season i picked a leftfield Captain to go against premiums tanking, it hasnt worked out. This week Salah and KDB didn't return (assuming Salah doesnt play) but I picked Ings when the more obvious/reliable pick was Maddison/Richarlison. Have repeated that error several times this year.
