Rests and rotation, Reece James in midfield and Maddison’s form: FPL notes

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Thursday’s final three Double Gameweek 37 fixtures in our Scout Notes summary.

GOALS, ASSISTS AND BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

Ronaldo's goals, Chelsea's wing-backs, wasteful Havertz: FPL notes

Kai Havertz (£7.9m) was among the returnees from injury on Thursday evening, coming off the bench for the last 12 minutes of Chelsea’s draw with Leicester.

Brendan Rodgers hopes to have Youri Tielemans (£6.4m) back available on the final day after the Belgian missed out at Stamford Bridge, while James Justin (£4.9m) was another absentee due to illness.

Matthew Lowton (£4.4m) will miss Burnley’s final match of the season after being sent off at Villa Park for serious foul play but Mike Jackson hopes to have “maybe a couple” of his currently sidelined players back for Gameweek 38, having recovered James Tarkowski (£4.9m) on Thursday.

FPL TALKING POINTS

RESTED FOR GAMEWEEK 38?
Who are the best FPL captain options for Double Gameweek 34?

There were a number of notable omissions from the teamsheets on Thursday evening which would, you’d think, increase the chances of Gameweek 38 starts for the players affected.

Mason Mount (£7.7m) was an unused substitute in Chelsea’s draw with Leicester, while Danny Ings (£7.7m) and Philippe Coutinho (£7.1m) were handed second-half cameos off the bench in Aston Villa’s clash with Burnley. Conor Gallagher (£6.0m) was also benched by Patrick Vieira at Goodison Park.

Five of the six teams in action on Thursday night have, wait for it, “nothing to play for” on the final day of the season, so you’re not quite sure what the respective managers may do in Gameweek 38; we have already seen the head coaches of the comfortably mid-table Villa and Palace hand run-outs to squad players in the run-in, for instance.

Turnarounds of less than 72 hours may also have to be considered, with the likes of James Maddison (£6.9m), Reece James (£6.4m), Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) and Richarlison (£7.6m) all handed 90-minute run-outs on Thursday and Jamie Vardy (£10.3m) and Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) both getting 78 minutes.

Fatigue may be less of a concern than normal given that a summer’s breather follows but there is still the nagging uncertainty over what Messrs Vieira, Gerrard, Tuchel, Rodgers and Lampard will do in Gameweek 38 as a result of their sides being out of any final-day scramble to avoid the drop or seal a European spot.

JAMES IMPRESSES

While the extended game-time might be a minor concern, Reece James (£6.4m) delivered a beautifully timed Gameweek 38 audition.

Registering four goal attempts and three chances created, he had the highest expected goal involvement (xGI) figure of any player on show at Stamford Bridge. The England international was even pushed into a more advanced central midfield role for the final half an hour.

Above: Reece James had more final-third touches (67) than the entire Leicester team on Thursday

It was his ‘pitching wedge’ assist for Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) that brought the scores level in west London and owners of the Chelsea defenders ought to feel miffed that they didn’t have clean sheets to go with their attacking returns, as the Foxes registered only two shots on goal all match – one of which, from James Maddison (£6.9m), found the back of the net – and Jamie Vardy (£10.3m) was restricted to three touches in the opposition half.

Elsewhere, those managers with Mount and Havertz in their squads will have been encouraged to see disappointing displays from Christian Pulisic (£7.9m) and Romelu Lukaku (£11.4m) in their steads.

Maddison meanwhile made it 20 attacking returns in his last 22 appearances, a run that dates back to Gameweek 13. His average points tally per start in that time (7.1, below) is one of the best in the division:

AND THEN THERE WERE TWO

Everton’s dramatic win over Crystal Palace has now made them mathematically safe and means that it’s a straight fight between Leeds United and Burnley for the final relegation spot.

The Toffees supplied two of the five biggest scorers of Gameweek 37 (the other three are on Leicester’s books), with the most-captained player in the top 10k, Richarlison (£7.7m), notching his ninth attacking return in 10 games.

Moving to the flanks to accommodate Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.5m) hasn’t really done his goal threat much harm, as nine goal attempts were registered across the two Double Gameweek fixtures.

Above: Richarlison’s touch heatmap in Gameweek 37 shows him plenty involved in central areas and inside the opposition box, despite the move to a wing role

Calvert-Lewin’s season meanwhile is neatly bookending: having scored in Gameweeks 1-3 and done precious little since in an injury-ravaged campaign, he’s now bagged back-to-back goals going into the final weekend and looked back to his old self against Palace. He’s a candidate for our summer Sleeper series ahead of next season and it’ll be interesting to see how he is priced in FPL for 2022/23.

Anthony Gordon (£4.7m) owners had scant reward, however, with the young winger barely making it to 60 minutes before being hooked. After another display lacking in end product, and with substitute Demarai Gray (£5.4m) having an impact, a Gameweek 38 start would have to be called into question.

BARNES STORMING

If you’re looking for a cheap-o forward for the final day of the season, perhaps as an emergency bench option on a Free Hit, then Ashley Barnes (£5.2m) – don’t laugh – might be worth a look.

On penalties and again given the nod ahead of Wout Weghorst (£6.3m) up top, the long-serving striker converted from the spot to hand Burnley an early advantage at Villa Park. Yes, that was his first goal in 15 months – but he’s barely been on the field in that time due to injury. He had also been centrimetres from scoring against Spurs on Sunday, seeing an effort from range thwack the upright.

The Clarets may need to beat Newcastle in Gameweek 38 to survive; currently, all they have to do is match Leeds’ result.

Thanks yeah was thinking son in won’t really help as he has him (though I do expect spurs to score plenty). Bowen/Luiz/Mane or someone like that could be nice differentials

Any thoughts on the next season already?

Thinking Sessegnon could be a great asset for the whole season unless they buy someone for left wing back. Very curious about the price for Toney too. Will probably have him at the start unless they awful fixtures. Seems like he turned out to be the player we thought he will be at the start of the current season after all. Mitro will be popular too probably. Eriksen looks like interesting option as well, if he's below 7m next season he could be an option. Diaz looks like one of the best player in the league already, but if FPL price him above 10m then he would look less appealing. Bowen will now more expensive, but could still be worth it.

Thoughts? Who are you thinking will do well next season apart from the most popular players like Salah, TAA, Son etc.?

Agree on Sess in particular. Not too sure on Brentford if Eriksen leaves, their upturn in form has coincided with him coming into the starring XI. If he goes to Spurs they could be a lethal side and have a proper setpiece taker instead of Son. Unsure on Mitrovic, coming into the PL more settled with more time to build and work but they've lost Carvalho and won't have too much possession in the PL. I think they may struggle a bit at first but it's very hard to tell. I'd love Diaz but unless Salah or Mane leave I probably won't go there. But that being said, he looks like he'll make that LW spot his own sooner rather than later.

Grealish is one for me. I know a lot have written him off already but they quickly forget how vital the likes of Cancelo, Rodri, Laporte or Mahrez can be now but that all had very slow starts at City. He's showing more signs in recent games of things he needs to be doing (being more greedy around the box, taking on players more, moving up the field with the ball rather than always picking a safe sidewards pass, etc.) He'll also be playing with a recognised CF next season which will only benefit him, we saw how well he worked off a forward at Villa, I believe he'll have a good season and I don't see his price point rising by much.

Olise too, had a solid season. He was good for us last season but deserved to be in a far better team, he looks the part and seems to be taking setpieces. If Palace upgrade their central midfield they could do well next season.

I think Bruno Guimaraes is a set for me too. He's already shone and Newcastle will add to their squad next season. Had him for his DGW and he's looked superb. I only worry a little if he'll be a bit more defensive if they add an attacking midfielder or Willock comes back into decent form.

Oh and I forgot Gallagher. Think a lot are forgetting he'll be back at Chelsea, Tuchel was admiring him in preseason before they decided it'd be best if he got more PL experience elsewhere this season. Chelsea look like they're losing a few players and a bit of a rebuild to an extent is needed but he could play a big part going forward for Chelsea. I worry a little about his general lack of involvement on the ball in games (in terms of touches) but I'm sure he'll improve that over time, and if he's able to keep popping back up in and around the box at the right times then he'll still be a big threat.

Agree about Grealish - second year they tend to kick on under Pep.

I thought about Bruno, but think they'll buy some attacking midfielders that will keep him deep. If he's 5.5 I'd do it.

      3. Sgt Frank Drebin

Good point re Eriksen and Brentford's form. Really hope they will keep him as he's still a great player. And if he goes to Spurs that would probably make Son a little worse option since he will no longer be on set pieces.

Agree with the opinion on Grealish too, I think there is still a lot of room for improvement for him and the price shouldn't go up (although FPL recently is very good at pricing players so who knows). I had him for some time at the beginning of the season, but he looked like he hadn't adapted to Pep's football very well back then. On the other hand, his xGI has been quite average (around 0.5 both at City and AV) and given he plays for a team that rotates a lot it may be not a great value. But the one to monitor for sure. Thinking he could play a lot of minutes next season.

Not a big fan of Guimaraes to be honest, but on the other hand haven't seen him playing too much. At Lyon he had very low xG/90 and this season he accumulated as much as 0.4 per game, however much of it came in the game vs Leicester when he had over 2 xG. Apart from that, he had many games when he had almost 0.0xG. Looks like a player that could go quiet for a considerable part of the season.

Sess will rotate initially with Reguilon or whoever we buy. He's played reasonably well since he's come back into the team, but he hasn't made the position his own. I prefer Doherty to Sess, depending on whether we sign a RWB.

      Agree about Toney.

I won't touch Mitro until Fulham prove themselves.

Eriksen depends where he ends up.

Chilwell if Alonso goes. I think Saka will kick on. Cash looks like he's got 5-6 goals a year in him.

      1. Sgt Frank Drebin
        • 7 Years
        1 year, 10 months ago

Don't really think Conte likes Reguillon. In my opinion Sessegnon will be the main man at the left wing-back and from what I remember from Chelsea Conte didn't like too much rotation. But that's just my opinion, can't really say what Conte is thinking.

Regarding Mitro - the guy scored 43 goals this season in the Championship. Quite crazy. But it all depends on his price. If he is 6.5m or lower then he looks like a must for me to be honest.

Been thinking about Welbeck too. He is so consistent. If he is 5.5 or something then that would be a good value really. The big question however is if he can stay fit...

What is my obvious move here, don't mind taking a -4/8 this week? Got 1FT and 0.6m in the bank, is Salah > KDB the most sensible option?

2nd in my ML, 17 points behind 1st.

Used a FT to buy Kulu. Is anything in my team worth a hit? My team isn’t ideal, but I feel as though he will take 1/2 hits which would mean I’m only 9-13 points behind.

    His team (0.1 ITB) ;

    Schmeichel

    James, Cancelo, Robertson, Matip (dalot)

    Salah, Son, Maddison, Mount (Gordon)

    Watkins, Jesus (Nketiah)

    My Team (0.7 ITB) ;

    Pope

    Alonso, Cancelo, TAA (Schar, Digne)

    KDB, Son, Kulusevski, Saka, Zaha

    Nketiah, Richarlison (Ings)

    Stick? Or any hit suggestions?

Just a 17 point lead in money ML......

    His likely starting team:

    James / Alonso / TAA / Robbo / Laporte
    Son / Kulu / Maddi / Foden
    Richa

    Dubra / Saka / Broja / Weghorst

    My current team:
    Schmeichel
    Robbo / Cancelo / Matip / Bavies
    Saka / Mount / KDB / Salah / Son(c)
    Watkins

    Steele / Veltman / Scarlett / Dobbin

The question is, do I have enough to stay ahead or do I need to swap Salah and Scarlett for Kane and Gordon and play 442? Or bring in James and Maddi, for example, and try to cancel out his players?

Chasing a 25 point gap in my ML so got to roll the dice for GW28!

    Current team:
    Schmeichel (Foster)
    Cancelo, Alonso, TAA, Davies (Cedric)
Dewsbury Hall, KDB, Son, Salah (Gordon)
    Richarlinson, Pukki (Greenwood)

Salah and Richalinson will go to accommodate Kane (c).

Mount or Diaz for the midfield spot??

      Mount or Diaz?
Very tricky, probably Mount as more likely to start (I have Diaz)

Its a coin toss isnt it. Mount is great against poor teams but nothing to play for. And Diaz has it all to play. I think Diaz has the greater chance of the greater minutes though.

Currently lead my mini league by only 6 points.
Was always set on getting Kane in, but being pondering over..

    A Cash & Holgate > James & Cancelo -4
    B Cash & Weghorst > Kane & 4.1 Def -4
    C Cash & Weghorst > Kane & Matip -8
    D Cash, Holgate, Saka > James, Cancelo & Bowen/Maddison -8

    Cash, Robbo, Holgate, White, Dalot
    Son, KDB, Saka, Diaz
    Rich, Weghorst

Leading ML by 14 points going into GW38. Few issues as only have 1FT and 0.3 ITB, anything obvious? Thinking maybe just Salah to KDB or Salah/Ings to Mount/Kane -4? Rival has Kane/Mount/Saka/James.

    Ramsdale (Sanchez)
    Cancelo TAA Gabriel Rudiger (Dalot)
    Son Salah Rodri Kulusevski Martinelli
    Ings (Broja Dennis)

    Cheers

I'm 32 points behind ML leader, so will have to sell Pukki (whom he has) to someone.

Nketiah still the best option with nothing in the bank? Not in love with that

Probably. Are there any other mutual players you have that are worth more?
