Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 38?

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are looking to Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Liverpool for the Gameweek 38 captaincy, and for the final time this season, the Captain Sensible article is here to highlight which assets have the best chance of hauling.

First, we will assess the fallout of the captain poll, before then analysing the best options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Sunday’s 14:30 BST deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

Son Heung-min (£11.2m) is the clear winner of the captain poll, pulling in the support of 41.97% in the final vote of the season.

No other player has garnered more than 20.0% of votes at this stage, with team-mate Harry Kane (£12.5m) currently in second place, backed by 18.34% of our users.

Kevin De Bruyne (£12.1m) occupies third place with 8.86% of votes, with Mohamed Salah (£13.1m, 4.49%) and Jamie Vardy (£10.3m, 3.51%) just behind the Man City midfielder.

SON HEUNG-MIN/HARRY KANE

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 32? 1

Son Heung-min is just one goal short of Mohamed Salah’s tally of 22 and will attempt to overhaul the Egyptian on Sunday as he chases down the Golden Boot.

However, the pair are in contrasting spells of form: Salah has scored three times in his last 10 Premier League games, while Son has netted 10 in the same period.

Summing up, Son’s 2022 form is unrivalled, having recorded at least 13 more points than any other player in FPL:

Harry Kane, meanwhile, is expected to be fit and sits second in the above table on a very decent 131 points, having produced 21 attacking returns in 20 starts since the turn of the year.

The England captain tends to finish strongly, too, having plundered 48 FPL points in his last four Gameweek 38 appearances:

SON V KANE – LAST SIX MATCHES

Assists20
FPL points4832
FPL points per start85.3
Double-digit hauls21
Non-pen xG2.452.61
xA0.650.50

Last six matches: BUR/ARS/liv/LEI/bre/BHA

Spurs travel to Norwich City on Sunday with Champions League football in their grasp. Arsenal are the only team that can overtake them, but anything but a loss will effectively secure a place for Antonio Conte’s side in next season’s competition.

And Son/Kane could not have picked a more obliging opponent to face on the final day: the Canaries have shipped a whopping 79 goals in 37 matches this term and rank bottom for expected goals conceded (xGC).

They have also suffered against tougher opposition at Carrow Road, with some miserable results against the top seven:

  • Norwich 0-3 Liverpool – Gameweek 1
  • Norwich 0-1 Man Utd – Gameweek 16
  • Norwich 0-5 Arsenal – Gameweek 19
  • Norwich 0-4 Man City – Gameweek 25
  • Norwich 1-3 Chelsea – Gameweek 28
  • Norwich 0-4 West Ham – Gameweek 36

If you're trailing behind by 5 pts and you have Son,Kane,James,Maddison while your opponent have Son,Vardy,Alonso

    Is it best to :
    A. Kane(C) and transfer in Alonso
    B. Son(C) and transfer in Alonso
    C. Son(C) and transfer in Robbo

    Thanks

Hits in the final week - I don't get this aversion to hits in the final week - it's been shown to have a higher average number of goals so this is a week where it is more likely to pay off.

    Digne to Sessegnon
    Coutinho to Mount
    Richarlison to Toney

This is worth a - 12 in my eyes, any thoughts? In a normal week you can always delay a transfer by one week so its not always a long term judgement.

There is no magic formula go with gut or you will regret it. I had a 30 point gain from a -12 albeit on BB

Yeah exactly. I just don't understand the narrative to avoid hits in the final week, taking into account the increased number of goals. The above transfers were just an example.

Problem is having to make up at least 12 points from the transfers to just break even. And then you’re hoping for more on top. They all look good for returns but realistically you’ll get 1 or 2 returns out of the 3 players.

If it’s to really roll the dice though and introduce variance, you’d need to go for players that everyone doesn’t have, but those will all be popular transfers this week or many people already have to them.

Respectfully disagree with your example there. A pukki goal, a coutinho assist and a Toney blank are all gonna leave you down on the transfers and could all easily happen. I'm firmly in the camp of avoid the hits in 38 unless a massive hail mary is required!

Fair enough, no issues at all! I think the fact that all the best teams have fixtures that are so good as well. It could be other transfers it was just a general point that I disagree with the avoid hits in this week specifically.

Well, even if they all return - lets say Sess CS, Mount assist + CS, Toney goal - you're just breaking even (if no BAPS), so you're really looking for at least 1 monster haul for it to be worthwhile from just 1 game

That's my point though, in the final week historically there are more monster hauls and this week particularly very favourable fixtures

I can see it with Mount; I'm taking a -4 for him too. And to some degree (perhaps a bit less) with Sess, maybe a CS + assist. Not convinced you'll get more than break even with Toney though

Not sure it's worth -12, but I already have Mount and Sessegnon and starting both, and doing Watkins > Toney.

It's whether each individual move is worth - 4 though not the overall - 12

OK. It wasn't clear if one move was dependent on another to raise funds.

          Coutinho > Mount. Definitely

Rich > Toney. Probably not for -4, although I would prefer Toney of the 2.

Digne > Sess. You don't want Digne anywhere near your starting XI, but it depends on what the rest of your starting XI is and what your bench is. I have Digne, and he is 3rd sub. Happy with my starting XI so don't see the need for a -4.

The community’s aversion to hits in general is misguided I think because everybody looks at it as a 50/50 - whether you “cover” your -12 or not which is too binary a decision.

Let’s say the worst case yet realistic scenario is you don’t cover, you would still get close and suffer a slight loss, say -6. But the best case realistic scenario in this example is probably about a 30 point gain.

Basically this -12 is buying a ticket where the odds are stacked in your favour because the best case success is a massive increase in points compared to the worst case failure.

    Robbo Matip Cancelo Laporte
    Salah Son Saka Maddison
    Toney Nketiah

    My transfer dilemma
    1) Salah to Mane for free and play one of Nketiah or Odergaard

But out of those two - B. Don't think you will get too much out of Nketiah, Watkins, Pukki.

I have the first two and am doing Watkins > Toney and quite possibly benching Nketiah

Here I think I'd do the hit.
If Nketiah could be trusted a bit more, I'd avoid,

    A. Worth doing Odegaard > Maddison for -4?

Front 7 are Mount, Jota, Odegaard, KDB; Nketiah, Toney, Kane.
    Bench: Matip, KDH, Digne.

    B. Play Matip, bench Ode, double LIV defence with Robbo?

I know. But Burnley have to go for it.
I suppose you must have to decide who has the most upside? That's probably Rich, but quite likely to get only 1 or 2pts.
          Go Dub/Rich in that case,

Not necessarily 'rested' - just not in Pep's best XI.
But quite likely he will start tomorrow and worth a punt anyway.

Definitely worth a punt. Nice captain punt too if you've got the balls and are into the flair moves

Worth a -4 to get Toney in and start him ahead of Pukki or Elanga?

Need suggestions. ML leader has Alonso and will captain Son. He has a 27 points lead. Which option:

    A) Cout + White to Mount + Alosno for -4. Captain Kane
    B) Cout + White to Diaz + Zinchenko for -4. Captain Kane
    C) Cout + Gordon to Mount + Eriksen for -4. Bench White. Captain Kane.
    D) Cout + Weghorst to Mount + Toney for -4. Captain Kane.
    E) Just Cout to Mount/ Diaz. Play White. Captain Kane.
