Have Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers got a bargain on their hands with Djed Spence (£4.5m)?

Tottenham Hotspur’s sixth summer signing has joined permanently from Middlesbrough for an initial £12.5m, following a fantastic year on loan at Nottingham Forest that ended with promotion.

We assess the 21-year-old right-sided defender in our latest Scout Report.

THE HISTORY

Having previously spent time at Fulham’s academy, Spence arrived at Middlesbrough in 2018 aged 17.

SeasonTeamDivisionStarts (Sub on)GoalsAssists
2021/22Nottingham ForestChampionship41 (1)24
2021/22MiddlesbroughChampionship2 (1)00
2020/21MiddlesbroughChampionship22 (16)10
2019/20MiddlesbroughChampionship18 (4)10

It wasn’t until Jonathan Woodgate became manager that Spence was integrated into first-term action, making his league debut halfway through the 2019/20 season and immediately landed the EFL Young Player of the Month award.

Once Neil Warnock arrived to help Boro avoid relegation and stayed on for the 2020/21 campaign Spence’s game time began to suffer.

Warnock’s initial 3-5-2 wing-back system started to become a four-man defence. That, combined with the January arrival of Darnell Fisher, restricted Spence’s appearances. Between February and May 2021, he started only seven of their 19 matches, being unused a further seven times.

Therefore, when Isaiah Jones burst onto the scene at the start of last season, Warnock suddenly had two excellent young talents fighting over the same position. Having previously doubted Spence’s attitude by saying he’ll either end up at the very top or at non-league, Warnock loaned Spence to Nottingham Forest.

“For me, I’d say I try to bring excitement, skill and speed when I play… I just want to excite the fans and to play well. I think that’s the most important thing – when you excite your team and your fans and play well, it breeds confidence, and confidence is one of the biggest things in football.” – Djed Spence

Things greatly improved under Steve Cooper, the head coach that had previously won the Under-17s World Cup with England. He knows how to develop young talent and clearly saw potential in Spence.

At the City Ground, Spence started every game barring the two against parent club Middlesbrough and one on the final day of the season. Although a stand-out player during Forest’s surge up the Championship, it was the three FA Cup games versus Premier League opposition that introduced Spence to a wider audience – highlighted by a wonderful goal against Leicester City.

His attacking stats were actually quite underwhelming last season, scoring just twice in the league and assisting on four occasions.

With an expected goals (xG) tally of 1.7, the right wing-back ended on 24 shots (one every 153 minutes) and 43 chances created (CC, one every 85.6 minutes). They’re hardly compelling figures, when we look at what Spurs’ existing wing-back options were serving up in 2021/22:

Alongside this is three caps for England’s Under-21s.

PLAYING STYLE

Averaging 0.5 crosses per game didn’t rank Spence highly among Championship defenders but his dribbling did. By contributing 1.8 successful dribbles per game, he placed at joint seventh, where only Ethan Laird had a better rate from defence.

Data provided by WhoScored

And that’s part of the main package that Spence offers Spurs. He combines some very good dribbling and ball carrying with brilliant acceleration.

However, he is far from the complete package and needs to improve his first touch, decision-making and defensive positioning. If that became clear in the second tier, how quickly he can adapt to the top-flight is now the big question.

WHERE SPENCE FITS IN AT TOTTENHAM

This feeling of Spence being more of a developmental signing is backed up by Conte’s comments on the deal. Although perhaps taken out of context by the press, trying to twist it as a dig at his higher-ups, the Italian is essentially just saying that Spence is a player of potential.

“Spence is an investment of the club. The club wanted to do it. I said okay, this player is young but he showed he can become a good, important player for us. The club decided to buy him.” – Antonio Conte

Therefore don’t expect him to be a viable FPL asset for a while. As of now, Spurs have a staggering six wing-backs, with Spence, Emerson Royal (£5.0m) and Matt Doherty (£5.0m) on the right alongside Ivan Perisic (£5.5m), Sergio Reguilon (£4.5m) and Ryan Sessegnon (£4.5m) on the left.

With Reguilon and Emerson Royal expected to be sold, FPL managers may be tempted to begin the season with Doherty. The Irishman bagged 55 points from the six games that preceded his season-ending knee injury and could return to action while Spence has a bedding-in period.

IS SPENCE WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

A further complication came from recent Conte comments on midfielder Lucas Moura (£6.0m).

“I spoke with Lucas and I think that this will be a good option for me and in the past I converted Perisic in that position. [Victor] Moses was the same. [Antonio] Candreva was the same. Before a winger and then to become a wing-back. For sure he has great quality Lucas and I think this could be a good option. He can play behind the striker, on the right, on the left, as a wing-back.” – Antonio Conte on potentially using Lucas Moura at wing-back

So that’s potentially seven wing-back options for Spurs. If they struggle to offload a couple by Gameweek 1 and Perisic continues to have a light pre-season, FPL managers may reluctantly avoid their defensive assets for Southampton (H) – particularly with Conte’s track record for substituting on and off his wing-backs.

It would be a shame because the great run of early fixtures also offers strong clean sheet potential against Wolverhampton Wanderers (H), Nottingham Forest (a) and Fulham (H).

With Spence evidently being a signing for the future, it’s a ‘don’t buy just yet’ situation. Should he eventually establish himself as the starting right wing-back in a side that is very capable of recording shut-outs, however, he will make a mockery of his initial £4.5m price tag.

gotta say a lot of factors are telling me to go Kane over Haaland but that Haaland ownership is terrifying. I know it shouldn't be a consideration but it could realistically cripple your season if you go for Kane over Haaland and are on the bad end of the variance

I am not picking Kane as I will not captain him in first 2 GWs.

      Salah (C) GW1
      Haaland (C) GW2
      Reassess GW3

      Keep it simple

Assuming most captain Salah, is Haaland really gonna get that many points? Zouma will crunch him within 10 minutes

Ownership should always be a consideration!
But I'm starting to lean towards Kane over Haaland also.

It really shouldn't. A players ownership doesn't effect how many points they score. Should only ever consider ownership at the back end of the season if you're looking to either consilidate a rank or rise quickly

It doesn't though, the ownership doesn't affect anything. All it does is magnify the impact of variance. You should pick the player who you think will score more points based of their form and underlying stats because ownership doesnt affect performance, ownership would only ever come into play for me if i was 50/50 split on a decision considering all other factors first

I agree with this except the last part, again. For what reason is there to consider ownership when it's 50/50 based on all other factors. What makes it better than tossing a coin?

I agree with this, but only at the end if you are actually desperate because you're more likely to fail than succeed. I lost 35-40 points in GW38 once from take a -16 for ML glory. (Just an example; not evidence)

I don’t really see a big deal in high ownership…I probably rather avoid those players, if anything, as I see there prices more likely to drop if they start slow.
The argument of if he starts well your season is ruined is only valid if my replacement starts slow. There’s 2 big ifs there, especially if my replacement is KDB

Will cripple a lot more people's seasons if Kane does well and they don't own him.

Unless, of course, both do well, which is distinctly possible.

Looks like you just shouldn't worry so much about it 🙂

I think Son/KDB is the better play

        Haaland will be managed

Between Kane and Son I prefer Son

for .5 more you can tap into KDB/Son who I think have a far higher ceiling as mids

I'm starting with Salah, KDB and Martial. I can easily 2FT KDB and Martial to Haaland and an 8m mid (got money itb). Might lose out on Bournemouth but that's it.

Wondering if i should start with any City defender. Those Dias/Laporte injuries somehow putting me off.
It looks like Cancelo-Stones-Ake-Walker starting defense in GW1 and that's not something to cheer for....
Even if they sign Cucu, he will have to adopt Pep's system and that could last for a long time.

I think as King mentioned, actually viewing Cancelo as a mid isn't a bad shout. He's worth 7mil and scored 138 points in his worst season, last season that'll rank him around Harvey Barnes, who didn't have a season to shout about and was a bit meh.

Remember though, that's his worst season. If he matches his score, he'd be the 4th highest scoring mid. So not bad at all.

Picking Spurs full backs is almost a game within the game. Maybe the winners are those who don’t take part?

Currently on Perisic but I don’t like it. Mainly because I can move straight down from a 5.5 to an Arsenal 5.0/other bandwagon as early as gw3.

I think process of elimination, being selective, not succumbing to FOMO and ignoring certain options in FPL are major keys in FPL

Let's be honest, those Spurs FBs are a transfer waiting to happen with 5 subs. Doherty is worth monitoring at 5, but Perisic 2 years older in an arguably more physical league screams a transfer waiting to happen. Perhaps early doors he's worth a gamble pre-Europe

          Garbiel/Martinelli vs White/Rashford

I don't have any other Arsenal defence, and can't stretch to Saka (in this draft iteration)
I think I prefer Gabriel/Martinelli - even with his risk of shared mins.

All hinged on CR7 though isn't it!

It really is. I like Gabriel and Zinchenko and I am considering doubling up myself. I think Martinelli is a great choice but be prepared for rotation and early subs. Rashford the same but if Ronaldo leaves looks set to play.

Jesus is 100% in for me.
Then it's one of Saka/Martinelli (budget dependent)
And then if I can't afford 5 big DEFs I'll add an Arsenal defender too.
Agree, their opening is worth rolling the dice on.

Kdb over Haaland to start and possibly move Kane to Haaland gw2 (have Son)

      Meslier
      Zinchenko, Dalot, Mings, Jansson
      Salah, Kdb, Son, Rashford, Bailey
      Kane

      Klaesson, Williams, Greenwood, Plange

      Martinelli and Digne/Cash/Trippier

Thèse premiums only are worth if you captain them, you could take at least off and get yourself TAA at the back

          • 5 Years

Yes but you can also attack the premium with the best fixture for captain this way. If Salah scores v United gw3 and Kane scores a hat trick v Wolves, I’d rather have the choice of popping the armband on Kane right? It’s if the cheap enablers elsewhere can do well enough to justify missing the likes of Trent or the 8m mids over the short term is the million dollar question.

I don’t intend on setting up like this for long. We essentially have an extra WC this season. My view is to ‘hopefully’ choose some of the correct enablers early doors to increase value and that the premium attackers do their thing. I’ll have Trent et Al by gw5/6. History shows that cs are less frequent at the start of the season right? I know this is frowned upon in here but I can downgrade a premium to any player with one fr (or 2ft for defence)

I can but that mid is hard to look at. I think 2x 4.5s is max you should do in mid. Also, I think Dasilva is one of the favoured 4.5 mids. I don’t even think Murphy will play much.

Tricky to see a third £4.5m MID.
I think the only viable options for mins are:
Andreas, Dasilva and maybe Colback (in that order)

But wouldn't expect much from the latter two

Takes balls to stick to it... couldn't do it myself... but it's something different to the same old template everyone on here posts. Fair play, best of luck.

      Currently have

      Raya - Meslier
      Gabriel - James - TAA - Cancelo - Neco
      Martinelli - Salah - Mahrez - B Guimaraes - Andreas
      Jesus - Kane - Greenwood

      Toying with the idea of
Salah to Diaz and Greenwood to Darwin

Would Diaz & Darwin accumulate more points than Salah & Greenwood?

      1. FlamingMoe
        • 4 Years

its not really a legitimate straight comparison, as surely you wouldn't be playing Greenwood. If you made the change, it would either play as a 4-3-3 with bruno/martinelli on the bench, or 3-4-3 with Gabriel on the bench? The question should be between Salah plus bruno/martinelli/Gabriel (whoever would lose their spotto Darwin), and Diaz plus Darwin. Personally I would stick with Salah (5 seasons >200!!)

He is but it’s his spot to lose you’d imagine based off the tail end of last season (keeping ESR out) and pre season so far. Issue is if Arteta decides to play with 2 strikers Jesus/Nkietah, does he use wingers? Seemingly Nkietah has played some minutes LW pre season too.

Yes and no, but mostly yes.

ESR still seems to be in and out of availability, which makes Nketiah his main competition for GW1. You'd think Martinelli starts (most games), but there's competition for mins that could see him hauled off at 45 or 59, you never know.

Zinchenko at LW? More likely Nketiah, Jesus, Saka (with Jesus on the right) or Vieira than Zinchenko I think.

Jambot's talking about rotation, so I presume he's thinking beyond GW1, which could see Vieira and ESR already in the squad and taking minutes from Martinelli.

I disagree with this, he had a season that was heavily impacted by injuries and fitness issues last time out but he's been looking better and sharper in preseason. Say what you want about Salah, Mane, Jota, Origi or Nunez and what they offer, but there are very few players around like Firmino or that are as intelligent at doing what he does.

Just keep in mind that that he was probably given the penalty duties to help boost his confidence and get his first goal. And his fourth goal was a howler by the keeper.
That said, he's in my draft. 9.0 is a good price. Though I am a Liverpool fan who once picked Aquilani straight away.

Not a member but does the area have stats on influence e.g. % goal involvement?

Just looked and Neto and in the season he was fit he contributed to over a 3rd of wolves goals in only 30 starts with 5 goals, 8 assists

Who else would be at that level, Bowen did even better and Saka must close but they started pretty much every game.

Just trying to think of ways to compare players outside top 4 while even if their team isn't the biggest goal threat when they score it's usually one player involved compared to top 4 where you need to accept that they'll rotate the hauls.

        Maddison 48%
        Salah 47%

Alisson scored 176 last year, 30 points more than the best £5m GK and 41 more than the likes of Ramsdale.

30 to 40 points more for an extra £0.5m seems like a bargain, would we expect a similar point gap this year?

At the moment I have him TAA and Salah. Are any of the other Pool players likely to outscore similarly priced players by 30 to 40 points though??

Ramsdale played less minutes i think so should close the gap this season

His value e.g. points per game adjusted for price he's the best value GK that plays consistently.

That said Raya is pretty much identical in this sense and as other has mentioned means you are limited to 2 of Salah, Trent, Diaz, Robertson, Darwin so with Raya you get 1.0m back, maintain value and a Liverpool slot

I'm not prepared to jump to Darwin on the back of one friendly result against a German team in pre-season.

Robbo will score well but will he get 30 to 40 more than Cancelo, I don't think so. Same with Diaz, I expect a decent return but 30 to 40 more than Salah/Mount/Madison etc?? Probably the most likely in my opinion.....

Just playing around with KDB over Haaland and this is the compromise needed

Brentford could do alright this year

Same for me, I stretched and went to Mitro but if I go with a £6m it'll be Mbuemo

      Latest Draft:

      Mendy
      TAA VVD Cancelo James Dias
      Salah Rashford Neto
      Kane Jesus

      Any good?

      Meslier
      Trippier/Digne Trent Cancelo Justin (Neco)
      Salah Diaz Rashford Neto (Andreas)
      Kane Jesus (Mitrovic)

Currently sticking with Trippier, but very tempted by Digne due to is really low ownership..

Think I’m almost good to go? Any thoughts?
