Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what Aston Villa players had to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Arsenal.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

Arsenal were Champions League material for much of 2021/22 when it came to goal threat but there is a sense that there is still more to come: they had the worst xG delta (-8.16) and second-worst goal conversion (10.4%) of any side who finished in the top half last season.

Perhaps the acquisition of Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) can help remedy that wastefulness. He’s had a flying start to life at Arsenal in pre-season, although it should be noted that he too has a bit of a profligate track record.

Wobbly defensive periods bookended last season, with no clean sheets arriving in the opening three Gameweeks or from Gameweeks 31-38.

In between, Arsenal racked up an impressive 13 shut-outs in 25 matches.

Keeping together a settled back four was one contributing factor: Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m), Ben White (£4.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.0m) started every fixture together from Gameweeks 4-18, with eight clean sheets arriving in this period alone. It was no coincidence that Arsenal’s defensive numbers worsened when Tomiyasu’s fitness issues began earlier this year.

But Aaron Ramsdale‘s (£5.0m) displays were also worthy of note. Earning rave reviews after his initial debut, he had fallen out of form somewhat by the time we reached the end of 2021/22.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 5

Arsenal are actually top of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty in the first eight Gameweeks, meeting only one of last season’s top seven in that time – and even that is a Manchester United side who struggled for clean sheets in 2021/22. Even with the strides made in pre-season under Erik ten Hag, question marks remain about their defence.

Two newly-promoted outfits – Bournemouth and Fulham – come in Gameweek 3 and 4, while two of the leakier defences of last season, Leicester and Everton, visit the Emirates.

Arteta’s side will be in UEFA Europa League action this season, however, which means they will have to get used to a demanding Thursday-Sunday turnaround between matches. That competition starts after Gameweek 6.

The September international break may be a time to reassess investment in the Gunners, as all of last season’s top four have to be met in Gameweeks 9-15.

It seems the setup I've been on for a little over a week is now becoming the template, or very close to it ☹️

Can a few other players bang in a few goals in preseason and make everyone go back to something like last week plz?

      How you shaping up Nate?

        4.5 (4m)
        TAA Cancelo Chilwell Trippier (Fofana)
        Salah Martinelli/Odegaard 5.5 Dasilva (Pereira)
        Kane Haaland (4.5)

Still trying to keep differentials in there like Odegaard/Fofana but seems this type of build is today's fun. (I'm not legitimately moaning of course, if anything I should take it as a good sign that what I've been on is coming close to template after yesterday, I just like going my own way most of the time but it'll feel like I'm just doing what the rest are now)

I have both Dasilva and Pereira in my team too, hoping to drop the one that looks the dud if at all.

Both of them big boys up top looks strong mate. Good luck.

I'm actually happy to play Dasilva most weeks, Brentford fans were talking him up before preseason as being part of the solution to Eriksen's departure (in terms of creativity and attacking input), and I've seen The Athletic say similar. He did score in one of their games too. Pereira I imagine will be fine for the bench and coming in for the odd 2pts when needed, I'm sure he will pick up returns here and there so maybe it'll be on a lucky week for some. Should certainly manage until first WC at least

It’s what I’ve done. Extra WC so hopefully the premium attack with cheap enablers can outperform the premium defenders early doors by a decent amount to justify it.

Exactly the same here. Few 1’s and 2’s from Trent/Robbo/Cancelo etc to begin with would be very nice also and we will by them .1 cheaper 😉

      Yes. Currently:

      Sanchez

      TAA, James, Zinchenko, Walker (Neco)

      Salah, Lingard, Bailey (Andreas, Dasilva)

      Haaland, Jesus, Kane

      Issue is Walker-Lingard or Rashford-4.5

It would be if I commit but I need to see Liverpool play their last two. It's a combo of does Diaz deliver even let's say half of Salahs points whilst does Nunez take away from Mo.

Haaland on playing with Grealish:  "He's good. he has to get better, I have to get better, but [it's a] good link, I like the vibe around him, so it's going to be fun."

Pep on Haaland: "He scored a goal, which is important. These type of goals in front of keeper - always he's there. The first minutes, he needs more rhythm and time but already he had 45 minutes which is good for him."

"We'll see how he reacts to the niggles that he had in the previous weeks. After we come back we have long weeks to prepare every weekend game. In those two or three weeks we will get the best form."

I actually think he means the opposite. They have a full week break between every game from now until after GW4 (so including the Community Shield), no midweek games or anything inbetween so I don't think he'll need to be rested. I think he just means he's hoping he'll get fully up to fitness and City will be fully up to scratch in those first few weeks of the PL. It was what I was hoping so hearing him say it is good, now the only real remaining worry is how long he's going to leave Haaland on the pitch during those games.

        1. Andy_Social
          • 13 Years

That's how I read it. Haaland should be good to go for GW1, and GWs1-4 are vert scorable matches for him.

    Thoughts?

    Ederson
    TAA - Robertson - Cancelo - Jansson/Neco
    Salah - Bowen - Maddison - Saka - Bruno

I spotted the Jansson/Neco rotation also and have had them for awhile. Both with some bit of attacking threat too. You will struggle to get in a premium attack with that set up and it’s risky going with no city or spurs attack but I like it.

A bit light up top as you say but you have to sacrifice somewhere. History tells you that forwards are the least value so I've gone this way.

I rather like this but it might be problematic if you learn that Jesus has an injury niggle late on Friday. You could be playing with only 10 men or facing an additional transfer, but presumably you have factored that slight concern into your thinking.

Pretty good for a 433. I think you could get away with not having haaland for the first game and move the money around in midfield. Think you need a city def to cover the first game if you do go without haaland

I see Chelsea have WH, Leicester and Spurs in their first six games. I'd be surprised to see a CS in those games, especially while their new look defence is bedding in.

I think the likes of Zinch, Trippier, Cash, Gabriel, etc look better options (to start with at least).

Mendy was never an option and Chilwell still has the shadow of his ACL loitering

That only leaves James and whilst he's still a decent pick. A back 4 and a lethargic pre-season leaves myself somehwhat significantly cooler on him, at least for now

          Yes, imho

Chilwell, James, Sterling, Mount and eventually Gallagher all offer way more potential for their slots

Chelsea defence is an unknown after the losses of Rudiger/Christensen

Mendy is not renowned for saves/bonus

Yeah don't see any clean sheets but James/Chilwell should still score well with goals/assists. You could always just go Mendy in goal to 'cover' any clean sheets.

Getting or not getting Kounde will be huge. Settling for Kempembe is a big downgrade. Also, you're a creative midfielder light. If those 2 spots were filled, you'd be grand.

Yeah I'm honestly more comfortable with Chilwell than James. He's still coming back from a bad injury but has been back since the end of last season. He's had an extended preseason and having a full week between the first 4 GWs means that rests shouldn't be needed. James on the other hand had so many smaller injuries and fitness issues last season that I think he's more likely to end up missing games in between playing some at RWB and some of RCB. Chilwell is just a bit rusty more than anything

Zinc will probably be arsenals starting left back and may be pushed into midfield. Feel like I’m missing something as I’ve seen suggestions to others to get him out of their team. What’s the reasoning?

    1. LoneWolf1989

I think he starts, if Tierneys fit then he may get pushed forward which is only a good thing.

    2. Conners
      • 6 Years

I think there's no question he starts, but not sure where.

His natural position is left attacking midfield, he was playing LB at City out of necessity.

It's unlikely he'd have moved to another club to sit on the bench when he could've done that at City.

I keep coming back to threemium.

It is almost certain that the optimal long-term strategy is to have two premiums, keeping in mind factors such as value and captaincy.

However, at the start of the game, with each of Liverpool, City and Spurs having such good fixtures, and with the world cup making an early wildcard even more viable, attacking the opening gameweeks by getting each of Salah, Haaland and Kane feels so strong. Kane being a differential with Spurs' fixtures is such an opportunity.

The only real sacrifice from the template is Cancelo (and Jesus I guess for Kane), but I still have Trent, Ederson, James, Diaz as other important template options, and with a good selection of 4.5 defs (e.g. Leicester, Tomi, Dalot, Jonny etc.), the weaker back line is still not bad.

And after a few weeks the wildcard can be used effectively to bring back the stronger structure of two premiums and a stronger defence.

    1. DantheManinaPan
      • 11 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

      FWIW my team:

      Ederson, 4.0
      Trent, James, Dalot, Tomi, N.Williams
      Salah, Diaz, Martinelli, Bailey, Andreas
      Kane, Haaland, 4.5

      1. Andy_Social

That draft's a bit last week. The cool kids have added Jesus by now.
Also Tomi's been left out of recent ones as we're not sure he'll be fit to start.
Otherwise, it's last week's template, which was just fine (last week).

Just hold tight until closer to the season, many signings injuries etc to come yet.

Side note I love a good tinker as much as the next man but reacting to every single friendly is driving people nuts

Partially explains all the kneejerkers who start making transfers before the GW is even over

Mendy will be fine if Chelsea get the defenders they're heavily linked with and stick with 5 at the back
