Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what Aston Villa players had to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Arsenal.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

Arsenal were Champions League material for much of 2021/22 when it came to goal threat but there is a sense that there is still more to come: they had the worst xG delta (-8.16) and second-worst goal conversion (10.4%) of any side who finished in the top half last season.

Perhaps the acquisition of Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) can help remedy that wastefulness. He’s had a flying start to life at Arsenal in pre-season, although it should be noted that he too has a bit of a profligate track record.

Wobbly defensive periods bookended last season, with no clean sheets arriving in the opening three Gameweeks or from Gameweeks 31-38.

In between, Arsenal racked up an impressive 13 shut-outs in 25 matches.

Keeping together a settled back four was one contributing factor: Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m), Ben White (£4.5m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.0m) started every fixture together from Gameweeks 4-18, with eight clean sheets arriving in this period alone. It was no coincidence that Arsenal’s defensive numbers worsened when Tomiyasu’s fitness issues began earlier this year.

But Aaron Ramsdale‘s (£5.0m) displays were also worthy of note. Earning rave reviews after his initial debut, he had fallen out of form somewhat by the time we reached the end of 2021/22.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 5

Arsenal are actually top of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty in the first eight Gameweeks, meeting only one of last season’s top seven in that time – and even that is a Manchester United side who struggled for clean sheets in 2021/22. Even with the strides made in pre-season under Erik ten Hag, question marks remain about their defence.

Two newly-promoted outfits – Bournemouth and Fulham – come in Gameweek 3 and 4, while two of the leakier defences of last season, Leicester and Everton, visit the Emirates.

Arteta’s side will be in UEFA Europa League action this season, however, which means they will have to get used to a demanding Thursday-Sunday turnaround between matches. That competition starts after Gameweek 6.

The September international break may be a time to reassess investment in the Gunners, as all of last season’s top four have to be met in Gameweeks 9-15.

    These are the dilemmas I am seeing in FPL, when considering relative prices:

    KDB vs Haaland
    Salah vs Darwin vs Diaz
    Son vs Kane
    Sancho vs Martial vs Rashford
    Martinelli vs Neto vs Bailey

          I was going to say that perhaps I should be looking at getting a load of your players if that was the case, because at present there’s only two in there who are in mine. Not that it’s a bad team, quite the reverse. Jonny has been starting in preseason because I’ve been tempted too.

    Draft #442

    Sanchez (gazzaniga)
    James TAA cancelo (Williams) vestergaard
    Mahrez Salah(c) son BrunoG (Andreas)
    Jesus martial (greenwood)

    Largely based off preseason form admittedly.

    Kdb/Salah/son throughout the season

    Weakness I see is lack of premium but kane/haaland Vs premium mids..I'm basing on last year to pick up from strong Mid and Def to be honest.

    Sanchez >meslier is a gk possibility.
    Downgrade cancelo>Dias or Salah to Kdb gives me the 1m wiggle room but admittedly it is a -4 unless I epic fail badly first few fixtures.

    Thoughts folks? Was thinking do I offset Mahrez with someone cheaper to keep some itb?

    PPG last year:

    Kane - 5.2
    Son - 7.4

    Not saying Kane is a bad pick, but that’s quite a big ppg gap between the two!

          Ridiculous comment that they will sack Arteta off a bad start.

          They are backing him to the full & he will get the whole season minimum.

          I am seeing a team on the up, yes I am biased but also call it when we are shiiite.

      Tried building a templated but differential team and have this;

      Mendy
      Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, Chilwell, Perisic
      Diaz, Son, Grealish, Martinelli
      Haaland

      Gazzaniga, Taylor, Greenwood, Andreas

      Pros;
      Entire XI play for last years top 5 and can play basically any fixture and score points
      Cover Liverpool, City and Spurs attack
      Cover Liverpool, City, Chelsea and Spurs defence
      Bench has two(?) cheap starters.

      Cons;
      Chelsea form
      Haaland minutes
      Entire bench is 4.5 or less
      No Salah

      Notes;
      Not fussed about "potential" Grealish/Martinelli rotation. Think they both start but even if they don't five sub rule will work in their favour against tired defences.

      Questions;
      Do I swap Son & Haaland to KDB & Kane?
      Do I downgrade Chilwell to upgrade my bench (given Chelsea's form)?

      1. Y26 Royal
        • 9 Years

        I swapped Son & Haaland to KDB & Kane. Think it's the safest option to start with.
        I've also dropped Chelsea defenders for now so i would swap Chilwell to a 4.5m and maybe Grealish to Bowen or upgrade a bench player as you say.

        bonkers. Any attacking mid that gets reclassified as a forward is a waste of time. Havertz fits into that like a hand and glove. Never a no. 9 but a decent, floring auxiliary forward that'll get you excellent points if he gets chance to float towards the no. 9 position.

        But as an FPL forward? Yuk

            Watching it now. I refuse to take it seriously. His last draft was perfectly fine; he's just faffing around for the clicks here.

      Off memory KDB's PPG was sensational towards the end of last season too

        Yeah he was looking Ballon d'Ory.

        Looks that level in pre-season too...

        Looked on it last night. And he's feeding Haaland now. And City have a great block of fixtures. KDB only reason I'm considering no Salah at the moment.

        A league leading 8.1 in 2nd half of the season, tied with Son

        How are you fitting him in?

          Forwards are poorly priced and done dirty with the scoring system

          One up top, either Jesus and Brennan and then stack the mids and defence

        Yeah, struggling trying to decide if I should double with Kane and Son to begin with gw1 and transfer one of them to Haaland/Kdb gw2 or start with both Kdb and Haaland gw1

      My first draft, feedback appreciated:

      Ederson, Carson
      James, TAA, Dier, Cash, N Williams
      Salah, Odegaard, Guimaraes, Kulu, Neto
      Kane, Jesus, Greenwood

        Different! I'm tempted by Ode too just to spread funds and try and fit KDB in alongside Salah.

      Which one seems better?

      A) VVD + Mendy
      B) Rashford + Alisson

      Own TAA and James
