FPL Gameweek 1 recap: Jesus blanks but Arsenal impress

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Crystal Palace v Arsenal in our Scout Notes summary.

ENCOURAGING SIGNS FOR ARSENAL ATTACK

Jesus blanks but Arsenal get off to perfect start: FPL notes 1

Arsenal were left frustrated at missing out on Champions League football last season, but there was a lot to like about their performance at Selhurst Park on Friday, especially in an attacking sense.

In the early stages, they were electric up front, with Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) – owned by a whopping 77.1% of FPL managers at kick-off – showing glimpses that the hype built up in pre-season was justified.

The opener arrived from a set-piece routine after some sloppy marking, an ongoing issue for Palace that clearly hasn’t been fixed over the summer.

Gabriel Martinelli (£6.0m) headed home Oleksandr Zinchenko’s (£5.0m) nod back from a corner, a relief for the Brazilian after he had missed a huge chance earlier on after some good work from Jesus.

As a result, only Liverpool and Manchester City (15) have scored more Premier League goals from corners than Arsenal (14) since the start of last season, which is worth noting with Leicester City up next, another side who struggled to defend dead-ball situations in 2021/22.

Arsenal secured the three points against the run of play as Bukayo Saka’s (£8.0m) cross took a huge deflection and hit the net.

“The game he (Jesus) played right from the start is just a nightmare for defenders. He is electric, he never stops, he is always on your shoulder, he is ready to go with and without the ball and I am really pleased with his performance.” – Mikel Arteta on Gabriel Jesus

ZINCHENKO AND SALIBA IMPRESS

Oleksandr Zinchenko put in a solid shift for Arsenal at left-back, producing a 12-point haul via an assist, clean sheet and maximum bonus.

During the match, he registered one shot in the box and created two chances for his team-mates, whilst his movement often saw him invert as Arsenal settled into a 3-2-4-1 shape in possession.

And it worked very well for the most part, with Martinelli and Jesus linking up nicely in the final-third.

Above: Arsenal’s average position map v Crystal Palace in Gameweek 1, featuring no 35 Oleksandr Zinchenko

“Both of them (Jesus and Zinchenko), the way we started shows how hungry they are, the risks they take, the initiative they give in the game. They are really big additions for us. That is something he (Zinchenko) gives, that ability and versatility – and it is something we don’t have.” – Mikel Arteta

Elsewhere, French defender William Saliba (£4.5m) made his first start in an Arsenal shirt and was excellent, while Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) made two important saves to deny Odsonne Edouard (£5.5m) and Eberechi Eze (£5.5m), ensuring the Gunners clean sheet was kept intact.

“Wili (Saliba) was phenomenal – his relationship with Gabriel, his understanding with the back four, for him to play his first Premier League game away from home against Palace, really credit to the boy because he stood with a big presence and a lot of composure.” – Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta’s side now have an appealing set of games to come, which includes back-to-back matches against newly-promoted sides in Gameweeks 3 and 4.

PALACE START SLOWLY

Palace improved as the game wore on, with Edouard and Eze forcing Ramsdale into a couple of fine stops, but a slow start essentially cost them.

Patrick Vieira had said on Thursday that his team were behind tactically after being split up during pre-season, and it was evident as Arsenal launched wave after wave of attacks in the early stages.

Eze, meanwhile, didn’t see enough of the ball during that spell but improved significantly after the break and should have scored, while Joachim Andersen’s (£4.5m) long-range passes to the flanks caught the eye.

“It’s something we spoke about: we know Arsenal shuffle a lot and switch sides, so it worked well. I found Wilf and Jordan a few times.” – Joachim Andersen

However, the Eagles will be disappointed with their start in Gameweek 1, and it doesn’t get any easier with trips to Liverpool and Man City in their next three fixtures.

“Football is about trying to score goals and we played against a good side. It’s really difficult to control the game against teams that have really good players. We had the ball, we had situations but we didn’t create very much. In the key moments, we didn’t score to lift the crowd and build momentum. That is something we have to work on.” – Patrick Vieira

Crystal Palace XI: Guaita, Clyne, Andersen, Guehi, Mitchell, Doucoure (Milivojevic 75), Schlupp (Hughes 86), Eze (Ebiowei 86), Ayew, Zaha, Edouard (Mateta 58)

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale, White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko (Tierney 83), Partey, Xhaka, Saka, Odegaard (Lokonga 90+3), Martinelli, Jesus (Nketiah 83)

Anyone know if there is a way to link a users FPL score to directly update in an excel spreadsheet? Thought I may have seen this done before in an old FFS league I was in..

I'm managing a mini league and would make it much easier to track weekly scores.

    Thanks

Gw history and rank gives you it on the main site.

Don't know how you link for a separate record or why Excel is better, other than to look back next season.

I manage a league which requires me to track scores a bit differently. Having points auto update on an excel sheet would save me a ton of time

Leagues on livefpl allow you to export scores to excel so that could be a way to do it. http://www.livefpl.net/leagues

Google Sheets has an API — if you’re so inclined it’s fairly straightforward with bit of scripting, iterate through your manager IDs, grab the JSON, populate, etc

Definitely inclined, love learning new things to make things like this easier.

I'm not super familiar with excel, but slowly learning new things.

What your saying sounds about the same as what I was reading on a Reddit post last night, I'll figure it out!

I swerved him just to try and be slightly different. The opening half hour was tense though, he was electric. He’ll do well this season for sure.
I thought Martinelli would be enough cover. Arsenal looked menacing so I may need to revisit that one soon.

Dumb comment. If you actually watched the game, you'd have see how fluent and impressive the Arsenal attack was. I'm more than happy owning Jesus going forward and regret not picking Zinchenko as my 5th defender.
I can see Arsenal winning their first 4 games and might treble up on them.

The Trippier or Zinchenko dilemma certainly looks to have gone wrong for me. It did look more like a 3-4-3 at periods. Which nullified Saka slightly too.

Just looking at the positional stats and Saka still very prominent in the Palace box, I withdraw that comment! He certainly had to track back and help White with Zaha though.

                      Sell kane?

                      Sell haaland?

Keep the money in the bank?

                      What if he blanks again?

                      Are they still brilliant managers?

Or do you downgrade somewhere and upgrade another striker for a hit foregoing your minor advantage from this week because your non Jesus player definitely didn't blank?

It depends on the specific team. So many factors to consider, you’re right but there are also so many possibilities too, what if they have cash in the bank for the move? Or What if they picked someone like Watkins/Wilson/Vardy who could smash it this gw & maybe they still stick to the plan of getting Jesus.

If that’s successful, they are already ahead of the curve in that regard

Let's say they have a 7.5 or 7 and money in the bank to upgrade to Jesus.

The only way they gain is if there gw1 player hauls. This creates a conundrum. How many players make a transfer in gw 1 to get rid of a guy who did well to get a guy who didn't?
                        And you call them clever?

Also the lesson learnt, Referring to gw 1 only based on ownership,Shaw last season with that ownership, Jesus this season. Saying one could avoid picking the most owned player at the start & it could work out well. That’s my point.

                      Indeed.

Much more attacking than the Seville game, which convinced me that Gabriel was a better option. It's possible he get's Xhaka's role when Tierney comes back. No hurry to bring him back though and Arteta is still hopeful of bringing in someone, like Tielemans, who could take the spot ahead of him

Arsenal's weakest points (not inc dodgy goalkeeping) was at full back. White and Zink were both done for pace. I think when Tierney's fit he'll start and Zink would be best used in Xhaka's place. He'll be more dangerous, more likely to get more assists, and bag free clean sheet points. That's probably when I'll look to get him into my team.

It's not though, if xhaka was the only one to haul, you would have plenty of crap players who go to the top because lots of people make multiple teams to triple captain anyone in the first week. The zinc crap players got it right. Won't be there at the end though

Eze looks a wonderful player, I must say. Slightly deeper so maybe not FPL wise but he certainly glides around the pitch. Technically he was superb.
Was very impressed with J Anderson too. A rolls Royce of a centre back that one. Palace should be fine this season. Like many teams, need a better finisher though.

So did Martinelli before he scored. Don't judge a forward by the chances he misses, especially in a rusty first game, but by how often he gets in a position to take a chance.

I always felt some Palace assets would be good to target after their run of nasty fixtures. Eze will be an upgrade on Neto, Andersen as a 5th defender. I was even considering Edouard as a future 3rd forward, upgrading a 4.5 to a playing 5.5. But he was taken off before the 60 minute mark.

Was tempted with Édouard. Looks like he might share a lot of pitch time with Mateta though. Will keep an eye on that one till fixtures ease. Zaha still the real Palace option for me at a later stage. He wasn’t at this best last night but still a handful. He’ll score 10+ I reckon, especially with pens.

Ayew should be an option at £5.5m too. He was a threat. Never seems to deliver though.

Also eyeing Palace assets around GW5. I want Eze to work out but expect the pull of Zaha to be too strong for me (and I loathe him as a player).

Most are idiots and bots, but there is a certain logic at times. For instance, people have 'booked in' transferring Kane to Haaland and have no cash to catch a price rise, so they do the exchange when they are sure it is still possible.
Mendy - I guess they have Ramsdale and saw him being a bit shonky. I'm clutching at straws there.

I expect something to happen to brake the template. But yes, all teams are pretty similar now and I expect this to be very difficult season. The point difference between top 10k and top 100k will probably be smaller than ever. And I'd expect point difference between top 100k and top 200k became almost marginal. The number of followers of decent content creators is huge.

Is Tierney ever going to be fit for a long period?

I think that the scout picks method is flawed tbh. It's no surprise that it comes up with weird results.
