FPL Gameweek 1 recap: Jesus blanks but Arsenal impress

We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Crystal Palace v Arsenal in our Scout Notes summary.

ENCOURAGING SIGNS FOR ARSENAL ATTACK

Jesus blanks but Arsenal get off to perfect start: FPL notes 1

Arsenal were left frustrated at missing out on Champions League football last season, but there was a lot to like about their performance at Selhurst Park on Friday, especially in an attacking sense.

In the early stages, they were electric up front, with Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) – owned by a whopping 77.1% of FPL managers at kick-off – showing glimpses that the hype built up in pre-season was justified.

The opener arrived from a set-piece routine after some sloppy marking, an ongoing issue for Palace that clearly hasn’t been fixed over the summer.

Gabriel Martinelli (£6.0m) headed home Oleksandr Zinchenko’s (£5.0m) nod back from a corner, a relief for the Brazilian after he had missed a huge chance earlier on after some good work from Jesus.

As a result, only Liverpool and Manchester City (15) have scored more Premier League goals from corners than Arsenal (14) since the start of last season, which is worth noting with Leicester City up next, another side who struggled to defend dead-ball situations in 2021/22.

Arsenal secured the three points against the run of play as Bukayo Saka’s (£8.0m) cross took a huge deflection and hit the net.

“The game he (Jesus) played right from the start is just a nightmare for defenders. He is electric, he never stops, he is always on your shoulder, he is ready to go with and without the ball and I am really pleased with his performance.” – Mikel Arteta on Gabriel Jesus

ZINCHENKO AND SALIBA IMPRESS

Oleksandr Zinchenko put in a solid shift for Arsenal at left-back, producing a 12-point haul via an assist, clean sheet and maximum bonus.

During the match, he registered one shot in the box and created two chances for his team-mates, whilst his movement often saw him invert as Arsenal settled into a 3-2-4-1 shape in possession.

And it worked very well for the most part, with Martinelli and Jesus linking up nicely in the final-third.

Above: Arsenal’s average position map v Crystal Palace in Gameweek 1, featuring no 35 Oleksandr Zinchenko

“Both of them (Jesus and Zinchenko), the way we started shows how hungry they are, the risks they take, the initiative they give in the game. They are really big additions for us. That is something he (Zinchenko) gives, that ability and versatility – and it is something we don’t have.” – Mikel Arteta

Elsewhere, French defender William Saliba (£4.5m) made his first start in an Arsenal shirt and was excellent, while Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) made two important saves to deny Odsonne Edouard (£5.5m) and Eberechi Eze (£5.5m), ensuring the Gunners clean sheet was kept intact.

“Wili (Saliba) was phenomenal – his relationship with Gabriel, his understanding with the back four, for him to play his first Premier League game away from home against Palace, really credit to the boy because he stood with a big presence and a lot of composure.” – Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta’s side now have an appealing set of games to come, which includes back-to-back matches against newly-promoted sides in Gameweeks 3 and 4.

PALACE START SLOWLY

Palace improved as the game wore on, with Edouard and Eze forcing Ramsdale into a couple of fine stops, but a slow start essentially cost them.

Patrick Vieira had said on Thursday that his team were behind tactically after being split up during pre-season, and it was evident as Arsenal launched wave after wave of attacks in the early stages.

Eze, meanwhile, didn’t see enough of the ball during that spell but improved significantly after the break and should have scored, while Joachim Andersen’s (£4.5m) long-range passes to the flanks caught the eye.

“It’s something we spoke about: we know Arsenal shuffle a lot and switch sides, so it worked well. I found Wilf and Jordan a few times.” – Joachim Andersen

However, the Eagles will be disappointed with their start in Gameweek 1, and it doesn’t get any easier with trips to Liverpool and Man City in their next three fixtures.

“Football is about trying to score goals and we played against a good side. It’s really difficult to control the game against teams that have really good players. We had the ball, we had situations but we didn’t create very much. In the key moments, we didn’t score to lift the crowd and build momentum. That is something we have to work on.” – Patrick Vieira

Crystal Palace XI: Guaita, Clyne, Andersen, Guehi, Mitchell, Doucoure (Milivojevic 75), Schlupp (Hughes 86), Eze (Ebiowei 86), Ayew, Zaha, Edouard (Mateta 58)

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale, White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko (Tierney 83), Partey, Xhaka, Saka, Odegaard (Lokonga 90+3), Martinelli, Jesus (Nketiah 83)

Based on the first match, should we consider Zinchenko as an OOP mid?

My hunch is he'll do alright overall, but his returns will be too spread out to warrant having him in your starting line up.

I'm rather distressed to see I have no Spuds. In the last few hours before deadline I went Haaland over Kane and chickened out of Peresic. Kinda need Kane to blank and Salah to outscore both (and Peresic to blank!)

should be careful setting yourself up barriers like this. Only takes pool to hit a wobbly period defensively and suddenly they're draining you. It's happened before and doesn't always have an obvious cause like an injury

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years
          1 year, 7 months ago

Anyone can hit a wobbly patch, but there's no logical reason to doubt Liverpool and City have a high chance of 50%+ clean sheets, not to mention the offensive returns.

I’ve definitely doubled and even trebled on a defence in the past. Trent, Robertson and Salah is a winning combination.

The toughest decision I was left with making for my final draft was Robertson and Dalot vs James and Perisic

I had to choose between Perisic and James. Went James in the end but had to lose Ramsdale to afford. Not ideal. Went with Raya

          You're probably right.

He scored 58 in 159 appearances for Man City.

38.5%. Not sure how many games were from the bench tho.

He could average a goal every 2.5 with more minutes for Arsenal.

Kinda fed up with FPL as it is literally everywhere.
All my TT, FB, random folks talking about it in TV studios. I’m not bothered myself with listening to FPL podcasts or watching YT videos.
Anyone else feels the same? This site is enough for me, all the rest is already too much imho.

It will only be the talk of the town for 2 or 3 weeks max. Once people fall behind the top 10% they will give up and stop talking about it. Same occurred last year.

No, nobody's forcing you to watch YouTubes. I watch quite a few daily, but I've filtered out the ones that are high on pizazz presentation stuff but shallow on content. I'm down to 4 that I look out for, which seems sufficient for one week. They are Blackbox, The Wire, Inspected Goals and Haul the Goal. There are a couple of key ones that talk tactics without necessarily focussing on FPL too.

Right, and also TT, FB? Why do this to yourself? I don't follow any FPL on any social media other than Twitter, and I unfollowed all but one which retweets the worthy threads from others anyway. Take a bit of control over your life, for goodness sake!

Gotta say jesus blank was sweet in two ways. One because I didn't pick him. Two because he's the ultimate darling of pre season form that despite being proven useless year after year the masses lap it up and base their teams on it.

People thought he was severely undervalued before he played pre-season minutes at all. Pre-season just told us that he had fitted into the team already, and was considered a 9 rather than taking minutes from Saka on the right. I like your "P.S."... very safe post in the end, despite the bullish start. 😀

I was already thinking that Saka and Martinelli are the best two to own, but what of the third? Zinchenko could be moved to midfield? Tierney if he stays fit? Saliba a bonus magnet at 4.5? Jesus ticking along nicely at 8.0? All look pretty good

Jesus gave me Firmino vibes yesterday, dropping mega deep at times and generally all over the place (in a good way), can't help thinking Saliba is too much of a bargain to ignore

Jesus, Martinelli and Zinchenko. Saka looked like he was covering for Ben White a lot yesterday. Ramsdale didn’t look solid, kicking was poor in places. Saliba looked great, but Zinchenko has more upside.

Why is Zinchenko being considered such an attractive option?

I feel that his playing as an oop midfielder might diminish his offensive returns, as he would end up becoming an 'assister of assists' and I can't really imagine his offensive returns to be better than a lot of other fullbacks...
And Arsenal defense really doesn't seem that reliable even now. It was surprising they managed to hold onto the clean sheet yesterday... And yesterday's assist wasn't indicative of his offensive potential anyway

Am I missing some statistics/insights which indicate otherwise?

    1. Zimo
      • 5 Years

Because he got the first assist in fpl. Casuals don't look into the details.

Seemed to be getting a good few crosses in yesterday. Saliba was a rock. Almost VVD-esque. Palace threatened but arsenal coped well with the pressure.

      • 9 Years

He got four assists last year playing a third of the minutes he'll likely play this year. Even if we're conservative because it's arsenal and it's upredictable where he'll play,
, he's likely to double that and score a goal or two (if we are lucky)

8 assists is a pretty good return when there's a fair chance half of those will pair with clean sheets and bring in bonus

I'm not sure why you think his assist isn't representative of attacking potential. He's in the box, where you want him. Assisting a goal

I can't. You want your player in attacking positions and he took up an attacking position. Another day it's not a routine but a rebound or deflection that comes to him

Does having a backline with the most owned defenders not deafeat the object?

That is why I went Robbo over Cancelo and Gabriel over the likes of James.

Trent is the defender everyone should have.

I am actually starting to like the look of Dias at only 11.9 percent ownership and will provide some attacking returns.

My strategy this season is to have a set forget defence and forward line. Trying to figure out who is going to score more points between Haaland and Kane each week is going to be a nightmare. Having a solid midfield week in and out for me will make the difference.

I mean, I can’t really help or do anything about the ownership levels of those players so yes they could eventually become non-points so to speak when they become template but just means you have focus transfer on midfield points chasing for runs of fixtures and form, especially amongst the 8.0 mids

    5. Pacer.
      • 9 Years

It'll be really interesting this year the way many teams are set to see what strikers do emerge as heavy scoring. Even the crocks like Ings and Wilson could derail a lot of plans with short to mid term periods of heavy sustained scoring. I can see why the move to heavier and heavier at the back but ultimately it usually works out a lot more complex than loading up on the best ppm players from the previous season

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years
        1 year, 7 months ago

Forwards like Wilson and Ings tend to have streaky patches. Jumping on them when they're hot could be to miss the boat. The premium defenders are expected to be consistent. I'd rather have a bunch of reliable season-keepers at the back and concentrate my transfers more in midfield.

        1. Pacer.
          • 9 Years

I kind of feel the opposite. My mid contains Son, Salah, Bowen so I have my fingers crossed that aside from the occasional big (C) hokey cokey I'll be using the transfers to make the best of what's available up front

          1. Andy_Social
            • 11 Years
            1 year, 7 months ago

Up front, I don't expect to shift Jesus, who is too good for his price and likely to score regularly if not prolifically. The other is a 11.5 - I might hokey-cokey with those 2 depending on what happens, or I might jettison in favour of beefing up the midfield. That's too early to call as neither have layed yet.

I took out Ramsdale in the final hour and got Ederson. I missed out on a clean sheet last night, but I don't regret the decision - he looked well shonky and I can see Arsenal losing a couple of clean sheets because of him.
I got the extra 0.5 to upgrade the keeper by caving in over Peresic for a 5m defender. Again, shame it wasn't Zinchenko, but in the long term my concern over future clean sheets reduces my disappointment.

Sadio Sane is definitely a bot

Most ironic poster I've seen for a while. Crying, boasting, attention seeking.

Is this mature: "you teach me karate and I'll teach you muay thai then we'll invite deulofail over"

Please don't come back until you've worked through your insecurities.

I spent the entire pre-season feeling uneasy about having Perisic in my team. Now I want him back 🙁

Let's see him (not) play first!

    Any fellow Bamford owners here?

As long as Arronson assists him.

I own him in draft. He's kind of the forgotten man in particular because he's acquired the reputation of a crock. Think he's a really good shout as an option this year

Exactly. A toss up between him and Wilson. I have both

Not an owner, but hope he has a good season. His one good season I. goalscoring terms was without fans. Not sure if he's someone who pees like a racehorse, but then struggles to start when someone is at the urinal next to him.

They kind of were already, no? Great start to a game, then panicked and capitulated. It wasn't a much better performance than GW1 last season; just this time they got the breaks and the luck. (I'm copying my opinion from Gunnerblog)

hmm didn't think of it like that, but kinda true - how Edouard didn't score I don't know, probably be 2-1 if that goes in
