Alexander Isak (£7.0m) hit the ground running in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) with a goal in Newcastle United’s last-gasp defeat to Liverpool in Gameweek 5.

Having been linked with several big-money deals throughout the summer, the Magpies waited until the final week of the transfer window to make their statement signing by securing the Swede’s signature from Real Sociedad.

The initial £58m fee is a club record and sees Isak follow recent purchases of Sven Botman (£4.4m), Nick Pope (£5.1m) and Matt Targett (£4.9m).

He’s already made a quick impression to FPL managers but what might the future hold and where does the 22-year-old forward fit in at Eddie Howe’s side?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions below.

THE HISTORY

Isak was born and raised in Solna, a part of central Stockholm, by Eritrean parents. As a kid, he started playing at youth level for hometown club AIK and eventually made his first team debut aged 16 years and 199 days – against a Graham Potter-led Östersunds.

Within months, Isak was touted as being one of Europe’s hottest wonderkids. At such a young age, he netted ten times in the 2016 Allsvenskan campaign and soon decided that Borussia Dortmund was the best place for his development, rather than Real Madrid.

The €9m transfer fee remains the record sale from a Swedish club to this day. Yet strangely, despite being surrounded by other highly-regarded youngsters like Jadon Sancho (£7.3m), Christian Pulisic (£5.7m) and Ousmane Dembele, things didn’t really work out for Isak.

2017/18Borussia DortmundBundesliga1 (4)00
2016AIKAllsvenskan19 (5)101

He played few minutes under Thomas Tuchel and made no first-team appearances in his second season, splitting time between Dortmund reserves and a loan with Dutch side Willem II.

A fantastic 13 goals and seven assists came in just 16 Eredivisie outings but Dortmund were still not convinced by the then-19-year-old and agreed to sell him at a small loss to Real Sociedad.

Season one was spent largely as a backup to Willian Jose but he soon excelled around teammates like Martin Odegaard (£6.5m), Mikel Oyarzabal and David Silva. The 2019/20 side won a Copa del Rey.

Then, during 2020/21, Isak became the first player aged 21 or under to reach 17 goals in a La Liga campaign since Sergio Aguero did it in 2008/09.

However, last season was a poor one. Six goals arrived in 30 appearances, which meant some eyebrows were raised when Newcastle decided to splash the cash.

On the other hand, most players have experienced an underwhelming campaign at some point in their careers and perhaps the change of scenery, in a new league, will stop any stagnation.

At international level, he has already collected 37 Sweden caps and nine goals – also being their youngest ever scorer at 17 years and 113 days.

PLAYING STYLE

According to WhoScored, Isak is a strong dribbler but is weak when it comes to defensive work and aerial duels.

The latter is odd, considering his height of 6 ft 4 in. Having a lanky body doesn’t lend itself to the power needed for headers and this is certainly one area that needs developing.

If Eddie Howe and his staff can aid this, there will be a forward that has everything. He has height, yet is quick, mobile, intelligent and fairly technical.

Journalist Carl Anka described Isak as a potential ‘footballing unicorn’ in The Athletic.

‘The strikers of the next decade are likely to be physically imposing athletes capable of moments of explosive speed and strength to break through high-line defences. They will need to be able to play with their back to goal, but also to press from the front and to hassle defenders in the wide areas.’

WHERE ISAK FITS IN AT NEWCASTLE

Due to Callum Wilson‘s (£7.2m) injury, Isak was thrown straight into an away debut at Anfield. He not only scored but had a well-taken second ruled out for a narrow offside.

Slipped in by Sean Longstaff (£4.4m), a calm Isak fired a right-footed shot into the far corner to put Newcastle 1-0 up and the disallowed strike saw him released down the left flank, before dribbling into the penalty area, cutting inside, dummying past the centre-back and slotting home. An impressive way to launch his career on Tyneside.

In two Gameweeks that Isak has featured, he is joint-third amongst forwards for expected goals (1.26) and has totalled three shots on target.

Using a bigger sample size, during the last two seasons, he ranked third and then fifth in La Liga for shots on target per 90 minutes (having played at least 1,800 minutes).

Here is where he’d fit amongst the Premier League names.

Kevin De Bruyne1.26312,221
Diogo Jota1.23322,346

The big question regards how both he and Wilson will line up together once the latter recovers from a hamstring injury.

One option is to use Isak and Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.4m) as wider forwards and Wilson as the number nine, whilst another could be to have Kieran Trippier (£5.2m) as a very attacking full-back who provides right-sided width, allowing two up top.

Slightly less likely is that Howe uses a 3-4-1-2 system where neither Botman, Fabian Schar (£4.7m) nor Dan Burn (£4.5m) gets benched.

IS ISAK WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

The Swede also has a decent penalty record, where he scored four from five at Willem II and both attempts at Real Sociedad last season.

Add this to a promising start and a fantastic run of games that doesn’t include European football, FPL managers may be tempted into selling highly-owned Gabriel Jesus (£8.1m) to accommodate some of the strong options within the £6.5m – £7.5m price bracket.

Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.9m) and Ivan Toney (£7.2m) have form and fixtures to their name and, with Wildcard season underway, Isak is definitely a name to be considered alongside them – if a slightly riskier purchase than the Fulham and Brentford forwards we already know so much about.

If the London games are off, I'll play my WC as I'll only have 6 players available.

In which case how does this look:
    Pope (Ward)
    Trippier Cancelo Neco (James, Emerson)
    KDB Rashford Bowen Andreas (Maddison)
    Haaland Mitrovic Isak

Enough ITB to do Rashford -> Zaha for GW9. Maddison and Bowen purely for short term fixtures, will move to Liverpool/Arsenal post GW12.

Not sure about Bowen tbh. I'd also rather have Patterson than Emerson. And probably Iversen over Ward

If the Liverpool team have reset during this period of rest, all those jettisoning them in gw8 wildcards and the like will certainly shake up the template and drive some differing results.

That Mitrovic rise was annoying. Wish I had done Jesus to Mitro, it would be ok in all scenarios:

    - Obviously good if BRE-ARS gets called off
    - Good if the whole of GW8 gets called off (you gained 0.1)
    - Ok if all matches go ahead GW8, with Mitrovic playing Forest.
    - Good if only Sunday matches are called off (BRE-ARS on Sunday; NFO-FUL on Friday)

Honestly, I don't think any of those reasons are enough to warrant an early transfer. The flexibility of still having a transfer is far more important than saving 0.1 IMO

Yeah, I ended up doing TAA to Trippier for the same reasons before GW7, but wish I were disciplined there and not here. Trippier hasn't even risen yet. And if the whole of GW8 gets shipped, I'd want TAA back

40% of Peter Crouch’s goals were headers. Peter Crouch invented the word ‘lanky’. Isak is 192cm, Crouchy 201cm.

If they are going to make a statement like that, they need to research career headed goal attempts and headed goal stats. Isak is actually decent in the air.

Depends what you want in a striker.
I rate Toney over Mitro because his allround play is muxh better. Mitro is more reliant on teams playing at his one strenght, physicality and goalscoring ability. Toney also has that, to a lesser degree but is quicker and more adaptable to different kind of playing style.
Kane is probably better than most

Just my opinion, It doesn't make sense. People got their free hit back, if they didn't then it would be a different story. It would be too messy, people currently on wildcards rolled over from GW8 wouldn't be able to use the FH.

For me it doesn't matter too much as I'd probably wildcard but for the people who have already wildcarded in an earlier GW they might have no option but to FH depending on their team. Just seems unfair on them.

there's not a massive difference between WCing in 8 or 9. The original advatange to delaying it till 9, was down to the international break inbetween these gameweeks

It's not ideal but could potentially work. You can bench James, Maddison etc and sell Arsenal/Liverpool players, given their fixtures GW9 onwards.

Yeah, I'm happy losing Salah for De Bruyne, I think, but it's hard to drop Martinelli given he's now £6.5m, and I'll want him back sooner rather than later.

I have both Salah and KDB, so no issues for me there. And also feel like Martinelli will do well even against the big teams as he could be Arsenal's main outlet on the break. He's a good hold even when the fixtures turn.

Yeah, that's the issue with a WC this GW if London is cancelled. You'd have to limit yourself to less than 3 from these teams, and surely I'd want more than 3 from Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham combined. Throw in a couple Leicester and Toney even. Will be tough to work out this imo.

I'll have 6 players for GW8 in that case but I'm not WCing. It'll inevitably mean I avoid players I'll want longterm just because they're missing one GW and to me that feels like a poor use of something that's meant to set you up for at least a few weeks, or provide the basis for a lot longer. I'll take a hit if needed to field 8. As for GW9 WC plan, I'll likely not do it now, really unsure as to when I will use it though

WC team assuming London games are off

    Pope
    Cancelo Trippier Dalot
    KDB Rashford Andreas Bailey
    Haaland Isak Mitrovic

    Iversen Williams Martinelli James
4.6m in the bank for Isak to Kane

looks pretty standard? Not sure my team changes that much even if London games go ahead.

The more I think of it, what is going to happen with Chelsea assets with Potter?

I doubt he will start with Auba. Cucurella may be his favourite. Will Potter play James at RCB with one of the wingers at RWB? The biggest issue for Potter is the CM options at Chelsea.

The other thing is Broja up top wil provide the movement Potter requires and is why Auba might not see the light of day.

Will be very interesting to see what Potter's 1st lineup will look like. Pity it will only be GW9.

The beauty is we get to see it in the Champions League first.

      Lucky for this luxury.

As a Sterling owner I’m very intrigued. I think Potter is perfect for his style of play.

Potter likes his strikers to be involved in the build-up play‌, and that's not who Auba is. Can see him being a bench player most of the times under Potter.

I do think it's bad for Auba. I expect Broja to get a lot more time but Havertz may continue to be used up top. Can see him playing a similar role to that of Welbeck, good with link-up play and opening up space for those around him, but even during Broja's long lean spell last season he was working quite hard on and off the ball so I wouldn't be surprised to see him ahead of him at some point

The London games theory is majorly flawed, there is a huge mutual aid request for all Police forces to send officers to London for the next 10 days which will leave county forces (including those in the North) majorly short of officers for general duties never mind events.
If games are categorised as a low risk of disorder by the Policing bodies then they will have a decent chance of proceeding. Wednesdays Championship games will be a good indicator, Millwall V Cardiff for example will very likely be postponed and then that sets precedent.

Maybe they shouldn't allow away fans to the grounds, just for this weekend

Then do the same in the reverse fixture later in the season

It's all speculation, as is your post, why don't people just wait and see? There will have to be an announcement made fairly quickly, and I think you overestimate the number of Police that will be shipped in from other forces, especially from the North. You'd probably be surprised at what a small percentage of Force's numbers are deployed at a normal match.

It is speculation and I agree that people should wait, that’s the point of my post… those making moves on the assumption that London games will be off are naïve in my opinion.

This week will be the largest policing operation in British history, there’s no underestimation there and the numbers on mutual aid are huge, I’ve seen them. I’m not referring to ‘normal games’, most of those can be pretty much police free however take a quick glance at the fixtures and look which will be Cat-C (High risk of disorder games) and that will point you in the right direction of the potential strain on resourcing. As you say, we’ll see…

It seemed to me that the main point of your post was to imply that games outside London will likely be off too. They may well be, who knows? But frankly, your comment 'which will leave county forces (including those in the North) majorly short of officers for general duties never mind events' is just plain daft.

Not looking as ‘daft’ now is it, exactly as I predicted. High profile games at risk countrywide not just London.

If this is for efl m week games, then surely prem games at the weekend are at a bigger risk?

for anyone who already planned to wc GW8, there is no risk in activating now is there? Scenarios are:

    - Gameweek goes ahead in full (9 games)
    - London games get postponed (I'm happy with the team I'd make based on this, bench James and Martinelli)
    - entire GW gets postponed, wc rolls in to GW9

Just checking before I activate later...

      There is risk.

There is precedent for FPL awarding an extra FH. If the London games get postponed, they might give us that extra FH and it would be ideal to use a FH for this week so you can WC in 9 instead.

      Wait.

I don't think there is precedent for awarding an extra free hit at such short notice for a specific one off game week. The extra covid FH was to deal with the general carnage.

I guess the safe thing to do, if impatient and trying to catch price rises, is to make the transfers and let them show as hits, then if we get a free hit it will undo them, and if we don't then activate the WC.

will just keep an eye on price rises for now, I'd imagine we should get clarity soon now the funeral date is known.

Although I can see them maybe awarding the FH due to it being such a momentous occasion.

It's still possible though and if we get a FH I know I would rather FH than WC.

If I was gonna WC regardless of whether I get a FH I'd activate now.

I don't agree. If I get another FH now I'd use it in GW8 if the London games are off.

I'd be looking at a 'team' of Trippier, Haaland, Gundogan, Andreas, Mitrovic for GW8 otherwise... That is definitely worth a FH considering there are good games to attack like United vs Leeds and some others.

I plan to WC in gw8 if the games are on.

I'm not sure if I would WC in gw9 if gw8 gets postponed. Think it's better to wait for confirmation on the gw8 games before making any moves.

WC - has to be used in the next few weeks anyway, so may as well deploy it now if your GW8 team is going to be decimated and save FH for later - wait for announcements about this week first though obviously!

I'm going to give the unhelpful answer that there's too much uncertainty to look at specifics at the moment - I wouldn't spend too much time looking at anything in detail until we get firm announcement about what is happening this weekend.
