We’re always happy to promote Ragabolly‘s LiveFPL site here at Fantasy Football Scout, with its excellent array of tools and visual summaries of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) chip usage and player ownership.

A regular look at the FPL managers out in front in the top 10,000 and those with strong track records has found a home on this site in recent years.

With the international break upon us and eight (or should that be seven) Gameweeks-worth of data and ranks under our belt, it’s time to once again assess how the front-runners, the historic high achievers and managers overall are set up.

CHIP USAGE

It seemed like every man and his dog was playing their Wildcard last week but in reality, less than 10% of the top 10k – and fewer than 7% of managers overall – hit ‘activate’ for Gameweek 8.

A lot of those currently in the top 10,000 won’t finish in such high positions, of course: while many FPL managers are yet to even burn a single chip, some of the front-runners have already cashed in their Wildcard, Triple Captain, Bench Boost and/or the Free Hit.

In fact, only 41.1% of the current top 10k have kept their powder completely dry.

Over 20% of the top 10,000 have already used two or more of their chips.

TEMPLATE WILDCARD SQUAD

 1

There was most definitely a ‘template’ Wildcard that existed in Gameweek 8, with managers in the top 10k and the overall FPL user base sharing 13 of the most-selected players.

‘Big at the back’ hasn’t completely gone but Liverpool representation has evaporated in the above squads, while there’s a return to the good old days of a three-man forward line.

Reece James (£6.0m), James Maddison (£7.9m) and Wilfried Zaha (£7.2m) were clearly investments for the medium-term and the favourable fixtures from Gameweeks 9-16 but there is still heavy reliance on Arsenal and Manchester City assets, despite their upcoming Gameweek 12 blank.

THE ‘LEGENDARY 1,000’

As for the managers with the best track records, there was considerable more Wildcard movement: a whopping 44% of these 1,000 historic greats activated it, scoring around seven more points in Gameweek 8 than the chip-less 55.6%.

A template ‘Wildcard’ squad isn’t available for these all-time high achievers but we can see who they’re favouring in general from the ownership list above.

15.7% have still hung on to Mohamed Salah (£12.9m), who is not listed above as his ‘effective ownership’ didn’t top 10% in Gameweek 8.

Just 5.2% had a tidy differential in Son Heung-min (£11.4m), meanwhile.

EFFECTIVE OWNERSHIP AT DIFFERENT RANK TIERS

 1

The above table shows how ownership of the key players differs (not too drastically) depending on your current rank tier.

You can get more relevant ownership/chip usage stats to your own current overall rank via the ‘local’ tab on LiveFPL.

These are the cheapest combination of players I'm considering for my WC draft. Looking to add 2-3 of Trent, Salah, Sterling and Isak for £9.4m.

    Ward // Guaita
Cancelo James Trippier Cucurella // Williams
Maddison Zaha Martinelli Almirón // Andreas
    Haaland Mitrović // Archer

What combination of upgrades would you go with?
A: Williams, Martinelli, Archer → Trent, Sterling, Isak
B: Williams, Martinelli, Almirón → Trent, Salah, Bailey
C: Zaha, Martinelli → Salah, Sterling
D: Martinelli, Archer → Salah, Isak
E: Almirón, Archer → Sterling, Isak
F: Almirón, Archer → Salah, Solanke

Looks like there's a rush from WCers. I think there are other options as well, Zaha, Diaz especially if no Salah, and then the heavy top leaves little room.

How should consider the Bowen's performance at Goodison from eye test viewpoint?

My take was that he has had quite a few chances, looked very involved in most of the westhams attacks, taking plenty of shots, had some assist potential as well. And this was against a Everton team who defend alright and park the bus, make it hard for the opposition to score.

Surely a potential haul around the corner from him?

    1. banskt
      • 12 Years

He is a good player and will definitely haul. Question is when? If you can predict the correct game, you win (like Son).

His next two games are at home against wolves and fulham. Both opponents have shown so far in the season that they like to get on the ball and play attacking football which should give him some chances on the counter.

Take a punt and if it doesn't work can easily downgrade to Maddison/Zaha.

He had. A couple of half chances but he’s not worth the risk when you can have Maddison or Diaz for effectively the same price. I can’t see the upside in Bowen.

The problem with Ward is that he has been awful and he might be benched in favor of Iverson. I see quite a few folks bringing him in as second goal keeper...but who knows what will happen.

        1. Philosopher's Stones
          • 5 Years

Yeah, but I'm bringing in and probably starting one of Ward/Iversen on the WC if we get clear news on who starts and bench Guaita, who has great fixtures post Chelsea. As bad as Leicester have been, they're still up against Forest this GW and this is probably their best chance of a CS yet.

Does anyone like doubling up on Leicester? (I know it is a risky punt)
Groß and Jesus to Maddison and Daka

Would do Diaz to Zaha next week and likely KDB to Salah in 12 (or 11 if I am feeling particularly confident as a Pool fan)

From the article 6.5 points extra for a WC in a blank game week over and above those that did not use a chip is not fantastic.

Also I think there will be some reshuffling of the WC teams with another blank on its way soon.

I think those that kept their powder dry may be quite happy with how events unfolded 🙂

I wasn't happy with my score for the week - was more like 15 rather than 6 off the elite WC average - but I think it was the right call for my situation.

My assessment was it was probably only worth an additional 6 points in GW8 to pull the trigger, and maybe less per weel in the next few GWs after that.

I've got 6 different from the template, but really only feel like I'm missing Pope and one of the Madds/Zaha/MID (who I can get for GroB immediately, if I want)

I think so, there will be perhaps 3 or 4 different spots in a GW9 WC compared to the GW8 WC.

A puppy isn't just for Christmas and a WC shouldn't just be for one game week 😉

(Note: I know the GW8 WC did look forward to future gameweeks but it will differ from a GW9 WC.)

Not so many, GW9 / Gw10 doing have a blank where a bunch of players were difficult to pick

Where will it be different: may be the goalkeeper, one defender and one mid? This is the template for GW8 to GW12:

          xxx - Ward
          Cancelo - Trippier - James - xxx - Neco
          xxx - Sterling - Maddison - Zaha - Andreas
          Haaland - Toney - Mitrovic

This is so strong that there's little upside going against this combination.

Iam looking it at this way. My team without WC would have been
      Ward
      Neco Cancelo Trippier
      Kdb Andreas Martinelli
      Halaand(C) Jesus Mitro
45 pts after hit. My Wc team got 63 pts so 18 points gained and already in a good shape for upcoming weeks

For sure, I just think it was a really tricky WC, especially picking players that didn't actually have a game in GW8 and then the risk of the IB and players coming back injured maybe before the next PL game.

The first time I have felt "what is the point" about the game we play in all the years I have played. A lot to do with the creator content maybe and the disjointed season. I have seen early WC picks from the boys in the know and apart from Salah or KDB, Maddison possibilities vs Bowen and the like, the template builds so quickly.
No electricity in SA allows me to amuse myself with YouTube and podcasts but it has become so boring.
A conscious effort required to stop watching and just go for it. My fears though is little will change with my picks.
    Anyone feeling the same?

h2h have mostly turned into 3 or 4 a side matches ,most have 7 or 8 of the same players ,no thrills to be had off of cancelo, haaland, jesus martinelli, etc, etc.maximum one player pick per team would sort it all over the game..

Have to invest in solar imo. Loadshedding is here to stay, and solar/inverter prices will skyrocket soon. Well, it has alreasy almost doubled. Where do you live?

An irony the sun goes in when we need solar. Inverters and batteries are easy to get conned on. Also the Alternating/direct current wiring homes have.

True, many fly-by-nights around now. But with regards to solar, the quality panels available now doesn't need much sun to properly generate power. You HAVE to get a lithium battery too, not gel

If there was such a massive problem at the power stations and things were at breaking point with all of the power utilities on the verge of blowing up as per the criminals running our country, then why did the not cut the power as scheduled yesterday?

There is only one thing on their non educated thoughts, to see livelihoods and small business destroyed as well as the middleclass which are the bread and butter for this country.

These clown puppets running our country are nothing but deliberate intentional criminals.

          All governments are.

Hey fellow Saffer. Yes, after 15 yrs of playing I feel the same. I'm embarrassed that as a 52 yr old that I was so obsessed with something that many think is a complete waste of time. I laugh when I watch grown up men spending more than an hour on a podcast explaining that they would have scored 15 pts more had they wildcarded and bought Son. 🙄

Anyway, cant blame the youngsters on here as I was the same 10 yrs ago. My suggestion is get another hobby. I recently discovered one of my old loves again...fishing. It's great to get out into nature and spend 4 hours with yourself or close friends. I have even gotten involved with the ORI tagging campaign and hope to tag my first fish in October.

I have also gotten involved with Nirvana, another forum where many of the FFS old timers spend time in conversation , swearing and laughing. Lots of non fpl talk. When I do feel the need for FPL I go there. There no one is embarrassed about their 1.9m OR.

      Cheers

Thoughts on this slightly left field WC draft:

    Guiata Ward
    Williams Patterson Trippier Peresic Cancelo
    Sterling Diaz Zaha Martinelli Andreas
    Kane Isak Haaland

Go low at the back and a regular 343

I still prefer Mitro in there over Isak, especially when Wilson is back. Maddison as well. I think Perisic is not worth the rotation. Billing might be a nice enabler @ 5.3m with his fixtures.

I must say I was not impressed with Isak. He waited for the ball to arrive rather than move towards it. Got out of jail with the pen. I want to change asap

Thanks both for the comments. I know the risk with Perisic, but think the threat warrants it. Andreas is the reason I’ve not gone Mitro as I don’t want the double and there’s no value picks in mid I like as much.

I had another draft with Bailey, KDB, Son and Mitro in for Martinelli, Sterling, Diaz and Kane. But feel like the above has better balance. What do you think?

    4. Mozumbus

Not having Salah is a risk which is covered partially by Diaz, and makes Kane affordable
      Martinelli to Maddison maybe
      Like it otherwise

Salah's ownership has been halved and will continue to drop.

As long as one has an easy route to get back Mo once he becomes 65 to 70% owned again, then I reckon it is okish to go without for now.

Little early to say. He's not even nailed. And Kane might be the first choice from spurs attack. Still, Son is someone to watch closely, especially for minutes.

Probably because he’s a class player. But I think the value has gone now the blank is out of the way. Far better options with better form/fixtures. You’d be chasing points.

  23. FOO FIGHTER

Henderson stinking up my team but his fixtures are ok from 9 to 12. Not going to remove him for a hit so will just stick it out and be rid before GW13 jumping onto the form GK at that point.

Pope, Raya, Guiata or Lloris will be the players I will choose from.

    Most likely will be Pope.
