Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers take a moment to catch their breath as normal single-fixture service returns following successive Double Gameweeks.

Erling Haaland (£12.2m) leads an assorted array of alternative candidates from Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, and even Brentford providing options for those managers tempted by a punt for the Gameweek 21 captaincy.

As usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to highlight which assets have the best chance of hauling.

First, we will assess the fallout of the captain poll, before then analysing the best options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Saturday’s 11:00 BST deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

Erling Haaland dominates the captain poll for the second successive Gameweek, backed by over 60% of the total votes cast by users at the time of writing.

The Norwegian has over ten times as many votes as anyone else at this stage, with City team-mate Kevin De Bruyne (£12.5m) currently in second place, backed by just over 6% of our users.

Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) occupies third place with 5.89% of the vote, followed by Kieran Trippier (£6.0m), Harry Kane (£11.7m) and Ivan Toney (£7.5m) a mite further back.

THE MAIN CANDIDATES

ERLING HAALAND/KEVIN DE BRUYNE

Erling Haaland headed home his 22nd goal of the Premier League campaign but his solitary Double Gameweek 20 return underwhelmed, especially for those who selected the Norwegian as their Triple Captain.

Despite registering two blanks since Premier League action resumed, Haaland’s underlying numbers, while dampened, still highlight his importance to Guardiola’s attack – and his captaincy credentials.

The Norwegian places in the division’s top four over the last six matches for shots inside the box (17) and big chances received (nine), a downturn from his early-season dominance.

However, Haaland continues to dominate the expected metrics, leading the division for expected goals (xG) and expected goal involvement (xGI), with 4.74 and 5.29 respectively.

Above: Erling Haaland places top over the last six matches for expected goals (xG) and expected goal involvement (xGI)

Kevin De Bruyne was a surprise omission from Manchester City’s starting line-up for Thursday’s 4-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, with the Belgian an unused substitute.

The playmaker’s absence from training photographs earlier in the week had been noted by eagle-eyed managers and De Bruyne had to settle for a watching brief as Manchester City came back from two goals down to demolish Spurs.

Prospects of a return to the starting line-up bode well for the Belgian given both his rest and the quick turnaround for Manchester City.

De Bruyne’s 20 chances created, and seven big chances provided place him in the top three over the last six matches, highlighting the midfield maestro’s creative influence.

Furthermore, over that same period, De Bruyne leads the division for expected assists (xA, 3.80), and ranks third for expected goal involvement (xGI, 4.73), highlighting his underperformance since Premier League action resumed after the World Cup.

Julen Lopetegui has galvanised Wolverhampton Wanderers since taking the Molineux hot seat, recording crucial victories to lift his new troops from the foot of the Premier League table.

While the Spaniard has inspired marked improvement in performance levels, Wolves rank fifth worst over the last four matches for non-penalty expected goals conceded (NPxGC, 6.58).

Furthermore, over that same period, Wolves faced two sides placed bottom six in the division for non-penalty expected goals (NPxG), West Ham United and Everton, with 3.26 and 3.71 respectively.

You said one GW only 🙂

Should be fine for this GW and a few more as he's been key to how they play with inside forwards, but Welbeck is a long-term threat

Gnonto is starting due to a similar situation: playing too well to be dropped for the returning Harrison or newly arriving Rutter, imo

To be clear, I do feel Gnonto is the less likely one to be benched this GW, as I can't be certain of De Zerbi's plans for Welbeck

My reason for leaning towards Ferguson is that Leicester's defence looks far worse than Brentford's atm, so Ferguson might be worth the one-week punt

    I don't want Foden
    I don't want Martial
Can't play one of Andreas/Bueno for the next couple of weeks due to bad fix.

    So I'm thinking of

Martial Foden Andreas Da Silva -> Odegaard Saka Martinelli and a 4.2 forward.

    This is for -12.

Stuck with Cancelo and Foden and 1FT.

Any chance either/both of them play this GW, given they didn't play a minute against Spurs?

Would prefer to roll a FT pending news on blanks/doubles, but equally can't afford for both of them to be benched again!

    1. JBG

Logically they should start. But Pep and logic don't go hand in hand.

If you have a decent bench start both or just sell Cancelo if you can't trust him. Think it's a bigger chance for Foden to start.

I'm sitting it out with Cancelo as like a fool I brought Martial in last week and he's dropping tonight. Having brought Shaw in too I think I will go Shaw Saliba Trippier from now on. So Cancelo to Worrall will be my move but not this week, sitting alongside Bueno on the bench. Might as well cross fingers and have 2 FT's in the pocket.

Assuming that because they've missed one game they're "due" to play the next..? This line of thinking doesn't really work with Pep. Both are somewhat out of favour, not just rested.

Exactly this. I think it's unlikely they will start this GW especially Cancelo when I read Pep's quotes on Ake and Lewis

You should know by now it doesn't always work that way with Pep. They may start and they may not even play 60 minutes. I don't need this additional stress in my life.

    Ward, Kepa
    Cancelo*, Trippier, Shaw, Bueno, Patterson*
    KDB, Martinelli, Odegaard, Rashford, Andreas
    Mitro, Kane, Haaland

Need to move Cancelo (—> Burn/Gabriel) out to spread funds - do it this week or hold?

if Burn, may asell do this week, Palace looking fairly toothless

For Arsenal Def may aswell wait a week

Conceded a couple again, Pep might revert back to last years defence with Dias/Stones also fit again? No idea on that one.. Wlves a great fixture if Cancelo has chance of starting

      I understand how you feel.

It can be frustrating to see your rank drop after a good start.

However, don't give up just yet! There are still plenty of gameweeks left in the season and anything can happen.

Keep making smart transfer decisions, just like you did in the first half of the season, and adjust your strategy as necessary.

Best of luck to you in the second half of the fantasy football season!

I think last night has reinforced my plans for this GW. Very poor service to Haaland, bailed out by defensive errors, and now a tight turnaround to Wolves where I think a benching is not out of the question. Casemiro's suspension has me bringing my KDB - Ødegaard plan forward. So I'm genuinely considering no City in my starting lineup for the first time ever.

    Raya
    Trippier Schär Gabriel
    Ødegaard Martinelli Rashford Almiron Mitoma
    Kane Mitrovic (C)
    (Ward, Haaland, Shaw, Bueno)

I was planning to do that even before last night. Not been in good touch & I'm not too invested in the DGW since City are going to struggle at Arsenal the way they're playing at the moment.

Be careful capping him though mate - I'm very suspicious that there might be some other issue (fitness or 'personal') that Pep isn't being up front about.

Yeah... I'm nowhere near this bold

Especially because I think Haaland will still get at least two good chances, and I feel he's clinical enough to make 'em work

Still on Toney(C) Trippier(VC) especially if Wober is confirmed out, but I don't trust Almiron anywhere near as much as I trust Haaland atm

      1. The Mentaculus
        • 4 Years

I like your captaincy picks. Trippier is my VC too, and if I had Toney & Mitro I think it'd be very close between them.

I'm not so sure that Haaland will get big chances. Did City play any balls in behind for him to run onto? Maybe one? The system just doesn't look like its oriented around him anymore & I think the attacking returns, if any, are more likely to be spread out now. His confidence looks way down too. 0-0 wouldn't surprise me.

I do have some concern about the effect of Bruno G's absence on Almiron but I'm not as down on him as most & don't see Palace defending that flank as well as Fulham did with Zaha matching up to Trippier

          Thanks! About that Spurs game...

Haaland had 8 pen touches and 3 big chances, which were his 3 shots (all in the box), with 2 on target and 2 of them being headers, from what I can see here:

I didn't get to see the whole game, so I don't know how exactly they got the ball to him for those chances, like if they were from enforced Lloris-et-al errors or expertly timed through balls

Hmm if they're counting the blocked shot as a big chance (when he had 3-4 defenders between him & the goal) that's very generous. The issue is that virtually all of City's chances came from defensive errors; can't think of even one expertly timed through ball. And even on the rare occasions when the ball did scramble its way to him in the box, he didn't seem quite as assured as I'd expect. Could have been so much worse without the Spurs collapse & I don't really see Wolves doing the same. I do still think the primary issue is Pep's tactics though (particularly not wanting to turn over possesion by risking passes in behind). Its well worth watching the full replay if you get the chance.

I'm also aware that's its very rare to get such a good opportunity to climb ranks by betting against City & Haaland's EO so I want to try cash in on that right now

To be fair to them, I think it kind of worked

City players have been immune to booing for years now. That was a proper wakeup call

Of course, the halftime Pep talk did most of the work, but my guess is that he used the fans' reaction as one of his talking points

Cancelo home to Wolves is a great game if he plays. But I am getting a bit sick of him.

Had been keen to roll my FT this week, now considering the Newcastle def double up. But maybe rolling is best.
