Our latest Members article series, reviving an old Scout strand called Tales of the Expected, explores the expected goals (xG) data from the last six matches, assessing each side from an attacking and defensive perspective.

In addition, we’ll also check out the form players on show, asking if their recent output is sustainable.

Having last looked at these tables after Gameweek 21, it’s time to revisit them again, armed with the latest stats from our Members Area.

Only Premium Members are able to read these pieces, so sign up today to get full access not just to the editorial content but all of the other benefits, from hundreds of Opta stats to a transfer planner.

TEAMS

XG: LAST SIX MATCHES

Manchester City and Brighton and Hove Albion are the league’s two most potent attacks right now, leading the field for xG and actual goals scored. Both sides have created an abundance of chances in their last six matches, averaging over 2.00 xG per game, which is hugely impressive.

Brentford extended their unbeaten run to 10 matches at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. They have now racked up a whopping nine big chances across their two away matches at Arsenal and Man City this season. Ivan Toney (£7.6m) has found the net on both occasions, as The Bees remain in the hunt for a top-six finish.

Their home form has been particularly impressive, having won six and drawn four of their 11 matches, averaging 1.66 xG per game. It’s the foundation of their stellar season, with home games against Crystal Palace and Fulham to come before they ‘double’ in Gameweek 27.

Newcastle United (-6.17 xG delta), Liverpool (-5.98) and Chelsea (-5.24) are the three biggest xG underachievers in the sample and need to become more clinical. The Magpies have been in a real finishing slump since the restart, scoring just six times in seven league games from 11.07 xG.

Leicester City, meanwhile, have served up two of their best attacking displays of the season in Gameweeks 22/23, putting eight goals past Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur. That’s coincided with Tete’s (£5.5m) arrival, which has freed James Maddison (£8.0m) up to play through the middle behind the impressive Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.1m).

As for Leicester’s opponents last weekend, Spurs, their attacking process has been poor, with an improving West Ham United outfit up next on Sunday. The Hammers are now unbeaten in three league games, with their defence looking solid (see below). David Moyes has mostly used a more conservative shape (a wing-back system) in the last month, which perhaps bodes well for future clean sheets.

Finally, Crystal Palace are without a goal from open play in the above sample, averaging just 0.79 xG per game. They next face Brentford, Liverpool and Aston Villa.

Would you rather have Mitoma or Maddison for next 4 gwk’s?
Which defenders are you playing in gw25? Cucurella any good?
    Cheers!

Mitoma, but the blank makes it very close. Depends who you can play instead in gw25.
At the moment I have Gabriel and Ake plus the very faint hope of Patterson. Cucu feels like a minutes risk, but I'd probably play him and hope rather than take a -4; it's not a great fixture, but Che seem pretty solid.

Badiashile might be a safer pick than Cucu if you can't afford or don't trust James.

Fulham only conceding 3 goals for an xg9.13 is really good. Went Leno after the break over Kepa and he's done well since. I think he has 5.6 pts pgw to Kepa's 6.6 so he has been a good pick (though not the best one tbf).

Yer, he's been my most-successful selection since the restart. Been swapping him and Sa to good effect. Sure, not the best GK in terms of pure numbers, but excellent value, good points, and allows for more attacking options in other teams.

Without giving away privileged information, why March over Mitoma? (I went with March based on seeing many of his shots blocked)

Mitoma looks like a better finisher, but McAllister and March are getting more chances and have more routes to points. Mitoma feels like Almiron MK II, FPL points will surely dry up at some stage.

Pope, Trippier & Bruno > Pickford, Dawson & Salah for -4?

Would look like this for GW24:

    Pickford *
    Ake Dawson* Shaw#
    Salah* Rashford# Mahrez Saka* Odegaard*
    Haaland Nketiah*

    Leno / Gnonto / Estupinan# / Mings

    * = GW25 double (6 DGW players + 5 SGW players)
    # = GW25 blank (3 benched)

    1.3m itb.

These British bookmakers always biased against the British teams.

I think odds change depending on the betting , so if huge money is on spurs which will usually be the case from U.K. fans it sort of changes the odds as the bookies get worried about losing big money

      1. Black Knights
        • 13 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

Yep this is it. Odds are reflective of the liabilities bookies face. Obviously more investment in British teams with British bookies, so their risk becomes higher, so their odds become shorter.

It’s why in England , England are always favourites (ish) to win tournaments cos everyone has a cheeky tenner on them and it’s shortens the odds

I get so annoyed when the linesman takes so long to put the flag up when the player is quite clearly miles off. If it's obvious and clear cut just put the flag up straight away. Only if it's tight should the flag stay down whilst it plays out. If a goal is scored it will be reviewed anyway and disallowed if it was offside. It's really not difficult.

      1. Pariße
        • 10 Years

Try being a linesman. The margins are almost always so small, to me it always seems like guesswork.

Not sure what you are getting at here. No it's not always easy to judge offsides which is why I said on occasions when it's a tight call, it's fine for the flag to stay down whilst it plays out and let VAR decide if a goal results. The point I'm making is when it's an easy decision and they are clearly off which isn't difficult to judge, the flag should be going up straight away rather than pointlessly delaying it.

Parisse has a point. In real life, running the line, there'e one person or set of people going one direction, one set or individual maybe going the other way, and also a ball being passed. You only have so many eyes, and things happen quick.

Sounds just like someone parroting what they hear on Sky, to me.

            1. Bennerman
              • 7 Years

Point being, when you see an 'easy decision' on telly and the pundits all bleat about it on Sky, might not have actually been so straightforward in real life (even if it looks way off).

I do get the point, though – if ridiculously offside, like 10 metres. That is rare, mind.

But the flag does go up eventually so they knew it was offside. Why cant they put it up straight away if they are 100% sure its offside? Pointless delaying it. Im not sure why you are going on about sky. Its nothing to do with sky.

Think the point is that the allowance for it being in any way close has to be pretty big – therefore you allow most things to go on, just in case you make a big misjudgement and call something off that ought to have been played on and ended up in a goal.

Reason I say Sky is that all the things the people on Sky say and the drums they bang on at different times, you just hear echoed at places like this and the pub on the corner. Ipso facto.
