We assess the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea in our next Gameweek 25 Scout Notes.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

CHELSEA’S WOES

Chelsea suffered yet another defeat as they were beaten 2-0 by Spurs on Sunday.

This was Graham Potter’s 18th Premier League match in charge since he was appointed five months ago. In that time, he has won just five.

Goalscoring is their biggest problem, with just 15 scored at an average of 0.83 per match under Potter. For context, only four Premier League sides have scored fewer from his appointment onwards: Crystal Palace (14), Everton, Nottingham Forest and Southampton (12).

It’s not even like they can claim to be unlucky, as they rank 14th for minutes per expected goal (xG), on 83.4.

Against Spurs, they managed just one shot in the box all afternoon, with their total of 10 efforts combining for a pitiful 0.41 xG. Joao Felix (£7.6m) looked lively and tried to make things happen but faded as the match wore on.

It’s a shame, too, as this is a period that should see FPL managers furiously scouting their assets, with fixtures against Leeds United, Leicester City, Everton and Aston Villa on the horizon.

“I think it’s a combination of a few things. It’s an easy question to ask – and not a bad question at all – it’s not the easiest one to answer either. Sometimes you go through moments when you create chances and don’t score them, which we had against Dortmund and Southampton.

Today I don’t think was a game of that. There were minimal chances for both teams in a tight game. The first goal was always going to be important and we didn’t get it. There was an element of players coming back from injury, getting them up to speed, and integrating a couple of new ones.

So as a team, we’ve not quite there in how we want it to look and function in a good way. And scoring goals is the difficult part of the game.” – Graham Potter on his side’s goalscoring issues

POTTER ON ROTATION

Graham Potter made six changes to his first XI from the 1-0 loss to Southampton, with Benoit Badiashile (£5.0m) and Mason Mount (£7.2m) the highest profile omissions, certainly from a Fantasy perspective.

So many alterations indicate Potter doesn’t yet know his best XI, although injuries/fitness are clearly the driving factors.

“The fact there was a third game in a week [after Dortmund] made it difficult to keep picking the same XI. We played in Dortmund on a Wednesday, returned at 4am, then played a Premier League game on a Saturday. There was one change to the Dortmund game today, which was Raheem [Sterling] in for Misha [Mykhailo Mudryk].

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, for example, Thiago Silva and Reece James were unable to play against Southampton. That is just where we’re at. I’ve tried to explain many times about long-term injuries, players are just not able to play three games in a week [after them]. I have a duty of care to them, and to their welfare, to make sure they’re not on the pitch and risking injury.

If Reece James, god forbid, injures himself because of an overload issue because he hasn’t had time to recover or play three games in a week, that is on me. Obviously, I take the consequences which are we change the team. But from West Ham to Dortmund to this game, I don’t think there are too many changes.” – Graham Potter

Against Spurs, Thiago Silva (£5.5m) was forced off when he appeared to hurt his knee. However, Wesley Fofana (£4.3m) came on, not Badiashile.

Mateo Kovacic (£4.9m), meanwhile, missed out through illness.

“I’m not sure. Hopefully it’s not too serious but I haven’t spoken to the doctor enough to have a diagnosis for you.” – Graham Potter on Thiago Silva

SPURS’ IMPROVING DEFENCE

Second-half goals from Oliver Skipp (£4.3m) and Harry Kane (£11.7m) handed Spurs a big win on Sunday.

The hosts, who were unchanged from last weekend’s 2-0 victory over West Ham United, were defensively sound, as they sat deep and played on the counter.

The Leicester City game aside, it feels like their defence is solid again. Indeed, they have now kept clean sheets in four of their last five Premier League matches.

“It is more about unit work and helping each other. More than defensive situations, it’s about this. It is about transition and how quick you are to recover position. Sometimes like today from the start it is about to cover the space quickly, slide and break the line together. Working together, it’s more about this. We have been having an inconsistent season to say the least, but maybe now is the time to capitalise on other teams under-performing and finish the campaign on a high.” – Cristian Stellini

As for Skipp, he is benefitting from Rodrigo Bentancur’s (£5.4m) season-ending injury. He has now started each of Spurs’ last two games and costs just £4.3m.

Tottenham’s next game is at Sheffield United in the FA Cup on Wednesday, before they face Wolverhampton Wanderers (a) and Nottingham Forest (h) in the Premier League.

I'm sure he's asking becuase he had an injury scare after scoring.

I know he stayed on but maybe OP didn't.

      I don't think so

I also don't think Arteta has things settled right now, because there have been multiple factors at play

Trossard has something similar to Jota's effect on Mané - Firmino - Salah in the two previous seasons

I don't think it's easy to predict what the settled attack will be. I'm not even sure it'll be settled in the first place. Jesus will soon make things even more complicated

At least Saka and Ødegaard seem locked in, so we have that in FPL. Martinelli's form (especially vs Ødegaard) might tempt people soon, including me

Who is the best Brighton midfielder for their upcoming run? Mac Allister, Mitoma, March in that order?

Thanks TanN. I’d heard Mac Allister was playing in a more advanced role now hence my initial order. I do like Mitoma though

I'm really starting to get annoyed by some of the modding here. Hateful, homophobic comments allowed to stand until I call him an idiot & then my message gets deleted? Harmless jokes by the Knight & Mirror Man deleted for what? Because someone might be outraged by the word "nudist"?

So if it was the OP that deserved deleting, why did it stay up for 6-7hrs when my response didn't even stay up for 1 minute? I actually thought I made quite a carefully considered point about queer representation that I hoped the OP would read. And yeah I called him an idiot too but that was thoroughly deserved (and free of swearing / offensive language)

My chip strategy this season was to play them at differential times asinine when not many people would be playing them to try and get a big gain out of them. My BB has been the most horrendous, a 9 point return.

And know I see GW27 where the big teams have easy fixtures (nfo, cry, lee) and Brighton and Brentford both double with nice fixtures. Should've saved it till then.

I think with the chips best to keep it simple and decide when will be the time when you get the most points from them and use them then.

      For bench boost, that's always

Cont. During double game weeks. I get though the importance also though of not ruining team for coming weeks just to get a good bench boost out, and all comes down to planning.

Yeah I played my BB in the last dgw and had White who doubled along with Ward almiron and botman I think.

Arsenal and Newcastle failed to keep a CS which was what I was hoping for

As always with fpl, there is luck involved as to the actual outcomes, and the key is being able to justify that chips were used at a good time (and similarly, that transfers most of the time would have worked out well). Sounds like a good week was chosen for your bench boost, but just unlucky.

          Ah, I see

It's possible to navigate the rest of chip season by just nailing the best 3 captaincy options and best 5/6 of the rest (so 8+ players in a BGW) each week, so a WC now could set you up for that

If I don't use the FT on getting Espu this week, I would have to start two from Shaw, TAA, and Trippier.

So it would be either Toney or Espu this week.

Leeds aren't as easy as they were some weeks/months ago, and no defence is "easy" for Chelsea atm anyway

Fulham will be without Palhinha, so that's a plus for Toney. If he does get suspended, it could be your route to Felix (if you fancy Chelsea by then) or maybe Father Kane

Yet, the only "good time" to sell Havertz might be the faraway GW31. So it's a question of patience vs stubbornness: keeping him might turn out to be either, but only with hindsight

If you're sure you want to dump him, I think now's as good a time as any

      1. Eleven Hag
        • 8 Years

        Thanks for the comment mate

Yeah the only reason holding onto Havertz was Chelsea not blanking as I want to navigate to until gw30 without using FH or WC. But its looking like 2 points every week from Havertz at most so now thinking even a hit for Toney or Nacho could pay off.

Don't be too nervous and just go with the flow. Take hits for players you expect to do well, even if they're already part of the template. People often expect too much from TC and especially BB. Consistency throughout the year gets you a good rank and "saves" your season, not chips.

Thanks mate. I haven't taken a hit all season and my rank is really good but I think I will have to take a few soon. Staying template actually helps as this is the highest rank I've ever had so far lol

The downfall of chip spaffing! Hopefully you gained enough from them when you used them for it to all even itself out at least.

I think my chip use has been just above average.. My BB got me 18 points, WC got me players like Mitoma, Bruno, Saka, Odegaard, Gabriel + Mings who's been benched until this GW & then delivered a 7 pointer. Triple captain is currently active on Salah lol

As a Salah captainer, hopefully that works out for you! 🙂

Sounds like decent gains overall - if you can get away with grey-ish arrows on the forthcoming high-chip weeks when you are chipless, you've done very well indeed looking at the big picture.

How would you prioritise the following moves in prep of DGW27?

    A) Robbo -> Mee
    B) Bueno -> Estupinan
    C) Andreas -> Mitoma

    Current squad:
    Kepa Ward
    Saliba TAA Robbo Trippier Bueno
    Saka Martinelli Mahrez Rashford Andreas
    Toney Haaland Kane

    1. Botman and Robben

I'd actually easily WC this, but if not... I like Robbo to Estupiñán, unless you have a plan for losing double Brentford by GW28 (I don't fancy their double in 29)

I have WC, FH, TC and BB remaining, but was planning to use those to navigate the later blanks and doubles...

May need to reassess after the cup games!

We already have the biggest double incoming in GW29, so I'll suggest this:

            WC 26
            Roll FT 27
            2 FTs to get 9+ in 28
1 FT and BB29, with Haaland Saka Ødegaard as the SGWers with great fixtures
            FH32

I think a good BB29 squad should handle the rest of the season easily with FTs, including DGWs 34 and 37. BGW32 is the most difficult for the template, so it's a good time to take punts on a Free Hit

            TC Haaland/Rashford in 34 or Toney/Mitoma in 27. I prefer 34, but used mine in 22

Depends on the Leeds-Fulham FA cup result.

B or C depending on who blanks in 28.

Would go for a defender first, considering your options to start GW26. The 7 attackers minus Andreas all look great but if you don't sell a defender you'd be forced to play at least one v Man Utd. B first I think

Mahrez feels like a priority exit
to me, with so few fixtures ahead and then rotation when he does have a game

Lots of potential, but it seems we're back to the roulette with Álvarez, Bernardo and even Foden (oh boy) ready to take that spot

I think Mahrez is a fine hold this week if he doesn't start v Bristol C. But yeah, maybe after that it might be time to move on

    B) Andreas (bre)
    C) Gnonto (che)

Gnonto, which I'm not very confident with because the other two have set pieces

Players on set pieces can get random returns in any game, so the fixture ticker doesn't apply so much to them for attacking returns

    Slightly off subject but:
When are the authorities going to do something about playacting?
Pulling shirts, holding heads when they have been kicked on a leg.
    Diving etc etc
So easy to get a lot sorted out.
Straight red for shirt pulling, diving and cheating in general.
It will take 2 gameweeks to get rid of 90% of it.

    Haaland, Kane, Toney

Yeah, that’s pretty good for 7 red arrows. I think the higher the rank, the less you fall. I’m similar, red arrows but from 96k to 106k.

    White - Trent - Tarko
    Rashford - Saka - Martinelli - Gakpo
    Haaland - Kane - Toney

    Ward - Trippier - Andreas - Akanji

The way things are going, it's quite clear that Potter doesn't know his first choice 11, let alone the fans.

Fair enough. Was just asking. If they’d kept a clean sheet I’d expect him to retain the same defence but I thought Badiashile had done well since signing plus he’s not registered for the CL which is why his omission surprised me
