We continue to assess the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Gameweek 25 in our Scout Notes series.

Here, we focus on Leeds United v Southampton and West Ham United v Nottingham Forest.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data from every single Premier League fixture.

These were two huge matches in the relegation battle, with the bottom two meeting at Elland Road. The much-maligned Junior Firpo (£4.5m) secured a win in Javi Gracia’s first game as Leeds boss, the Yorkshire side’s first win since early November.

Meanwhile, a Danny Ings (£6.4m) brace helped West Ham score four goals in the final 20 minutes, ensuring that both winning teams have pulled themselves out of the relegation zone for the time being.

Things look increasingly difficult for Southampton’s newly-appointed Ruben Selles, although Steve Cooper’s Nottingham Forest at least have a four-point gap above the drop.

GNONTO PLAYING WIDE FOR GRACIA

Our recent Scout Report on new manager Gracia suggested that he’d prefer a 4-4-2/4-2-2-2 system that could potentially put Wilfried Gnonto (£5.1m) up front.

Yet another known trait of the Spaniard is that he’s used to arriving mid-season and adapting to whatever he inherits. Therefore, whilst Leeds tended to play with more patient passing and width than when under Jesse Marsch, Gracia stuck with their 4-2-3-1 formation.

Above: Wilfried Gnonto’s touch heatmap v Southampton

Gnonto was a constant nuisance to Southampton yet, at the same time, played very wide and was restricted to two shots from outside the box.

He was the first player to depart, making way for Crysencio Summerville (£4.2m). The Dutchman came on to have a match-high nine touches and two shots inside the penalty area.

After coming close to scoring, he caused the goal by working the ball from a difficult spot towards Jack Harrison (£5.8m), who flicked it onto Firpo’s low finish.

Gnonto and Summerville are both incredibly cheap FPL options. Should one emerge as a Gracia favourite, he could be a great pick when anticipating future Bench Boost weeks.

INGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER

Nottingham Forest are the league’s worst away team, scoring three goals and conceding 29 from a dozen trips. 70 minutes into Saturday’s match with West Ham, they’d only let in 25 and were frustrating the Hammers.

Then Ings tapped in some brilliant Jarrod Bowen (£8.0m) trickery to break the deadlock. Two minutes later, another close-range finish from a Said Benrahma (£5.5m) assist, before the Algerian set up Declan Rice (£4.7m) soon after. Once Michail Antonio (£7.0m) heads home, it’s somehow a heavy 4-0 win for David Moyes.

Arriving in January with plenty of Premier League pedigree, that was Ings’ first start and he currently leads the way with Gameweek 25’s highest expected goals (xG) tally of 1.75.

With FPL managers frustrated by Aleksandar Mitrovic‘s (£6.8m) injury woes, Callum Wilson‘s (£6.9m) recent slump and the lack of security in Eddie Nketiah‘s (£6.8m) game time, perhaps Ings could emerge as a real option.

The stage is set for him to score past recent employers Aston Villa in Gameweek 27, before hosting Southampton in Gameweek 29. What might hold him back is in between those, as West Ham’s match at Manchester City is likely to become a blank.

FOREST’S FIXTURES

Speaking of which, the defeated Forest are currently one of only five teams to be guaranteed both a Gameweek 28 fixture and a Double Gameweek 29. Solid fixtures too – Newcastle United (H), Wolverhampton Wanderers (H) and Leeds (a).

This, combined with a defensive injury crisis, could put Neco Williams (£3.9m) back on the radar, provided Serge Aurier (£4.4m) is still out. Wolves are the season’s second-lowest scorers, Leeds have failed to net in four of their last six and the Magpies are really struggling for goals right now.

Of course, the very same defensive woes dampen Williams’ appeal, seeing this 4-0 defeat. But those wanting to Bench Boost in Gameweek 29 could see him as a way to get two decent fixtures on board without having to worry about leaving money on the bench afterwards.

Joe Worrall (£4.2m) costs slightly more but may be a more nailed-on route into their defence.

Leeds United XI: Meslier; Ayling, Koch, Wober, Firpo; McKennie, Adams; Harrison, Aaronson (Rutter 75′), Gnonto (Summerville 61′), Bamford (Roca 86′)

Southampton XI: Bazunu; Maitland-Niles, Bednarek, Bella-Kotchap, Perraud (Walker-Peters 71′); S Armstrong (Walcott 63′), Ward-Prowse, Lavia, Elyounoussi (A Armstrong 82′); Sulemana (Mara 63′), Onuachu (Diallo 63′)

West Ham United XI: Fabianski (Areola 69′); Coufal (Cresswell 46′), Ogbonna, Aguerd, Ben Johnson; Soucek, Rice; Bowen, Paqueta (Lanzini 83′), Benrahma (Fornals 83′), Ings (Antonio 84′)

Nottingham Forest XI: Navas; Williams, Worrall, Felipe, Renan Lodi (Toffolo 77′); Shelvey (Ayew 67′), Freuler, Colback; Gibbs-White; Brennan Johnson (Surridge 86′), Wood (Lingard 77′)

A and B are close - I'd probably go A if I had Liverpool attackers and no Forest attackers (not that anyone has any Forest attackers)

I traded out Rashford for GW25 to afford Gakpo. Should I trade Gakpo or Mahrez for Rashford, or should I stick?

You shouldn't stick. Rashford is the hottest player in the game so you shouldn't have sold him in the first place.

Not sure who the better option of the two is to sell. More will become clear after FA Cup results and will depend on your chip strategy.

For what it’s worth I would be nervous of benching Trip. Tarkowski at Forest looks ok but if you watch Black Box I’m sure that Mark guy will insist “Forest always score at home”. I think i would go Trip and Shaw for potential upside, then White then Tark

Depending on cup games but may do whether Fulham or Leeds win (as not sure bothered about Liverpool players) been looking at planning and think WC 26, BB 29 and FH 32 looking like good plan ( based on teams predicted to most likely blank/double as at today)- gives me 5 doublers in 27, 9 starting in 28, BB with 15 doublers in 29, FH 32, and have 11 players in both 34 and 37

    Thoughts on this WC squad?

    WC 26 would be

    Raya
    James Gabriel Estupinan
    Saka Ødegaard Rashford Mitoma
    Haaland Kane Toney

    Kepa MacAllister Trippier Schar

    1. The Mentaculus
      • 4 Years

Lovely. Estupinan injury one to keep an eye on. But BB with 15 doublers means selling triple Arsenal & Haaland? I would keep Saka & Haaland at least, plus maybe one of Øde/Gabriel. Think you could get some Man Utd defence in 29 though. I've kept Trippier & Schär too for 28, but am starting to wonder if Trippier + double Man Utd defence might be a better option to BB (if FTs allow)

Thanks. Yes means Haaland out for blank in 28 and Liverpool in 29( then back ) and Saka to Maddison for 29. I could easily skip both and save 2 hits. Ødegaard to Bruno F and Gabriel to Shaw would be other moves for 29

        1. The Mentaculus

Who would your forwards be in 29 then? Still deciding?

I guess 15 doublers is cool, if you can get e.g. 3 games for Watkins in the time that Haaland plays once. Just seems like maybe a lot of moves to bring him & Arsenal players back in again in 30.

Didn't fantasy hub link the login details of fpl accounts with their website? The hacker found the linked logins sat on the hub website then the rest is history.

No, it's the email and password combination

If you use the same email and password combination on multiple sites/apps, a breach on one can give a hacker access to all

Using unique passwords for each site and then writing them down somewhere or using a password manager will keep any data breaches local to the breached site. Say, if Hub logins are breached, a hacker will only be able to log into your Hub account

The trap there would be if Hub asks you to put in the same email and password as what you have on FPL (gives them access to your current team so their AI can make suggestions, vs only having last GW's team if they use your ID like what the Members Area here does), which means your FPL account will also be at risk, which is what happened with FPL accounts hacked into via leaked Hub login details, and why most of these sites will only ask for your FPL ID now

Ze has explained it far better than I could.

It also says on the website

          Login with social accounts
We don't store any personal information and only use your social login to associate subscriptions, drafts and settings to you.

Anyway, thanks for highlighting what you thought was an issue. Even though it isn't, it is better to be safe than sorry.

Fantasy Hub were also under the illusion that their website didn't store your logins but it was. The hacker found them.

If you obtain the Google login then you get access to the password manager that people use to store logins to multiple accounts.

Ze please explain how a hacker obtaining your Google login via fpl planner website is not a problem?

                • 7 Years
                2 years, 9 months ago

They do not have access to your Google login. Just the email and password you put on the site itself. If that also happens to be your password manager login, then that's very risky and not just on FPL sites

What got breached with Hub was the email and password for Hub, and the hacker used that to access people's FPL sites because many of them used the same email and password, for reasons I explained earlier. I didn't see any report of a password manager being breached with those passwords. Also, note that the email + password breach from Hub happened months before the FPL hack, so they are probably different individuals involved: the FPL hacker probably acquired a file containing leaked Hub emails and passwords, then developed a script to check the top 10k and FPL influencers to see if they used the same login details, then executed the team changes and deletions, probably all within seconds to minutes

It's also now standard practice to store a hashed version of the password instead of the actual password, so what happened with Hub had a strong hint of negligence to it. New/updated/standard sites are unlikely to have your password stored as the raw text in their database. So even if that gets breached, it's unusable. It's hard to know if they've implemented this without privileged access though

Also, please activate 2-factor authentication (2FA) anywhere and everywhere possible, as soon as you can

Authenticator apps ensure someone has to have your phone while hacking you... And that is usually a situation in which you could be coerced into just giving your password anyway

Beyond password managers and complex passwords, 2FA means you have your phone hacked/held as well for someone to gain access: so maybe you're some top government/corporate official or the like, for someone to go through all that effort. A tiny inconvenience that goes a long way, and FPL now has 2FA as well

I don't see where the website uses a separate email and password to login?

Planner uses the login details of your social accounts instead.

I appreciate the explanation of how hub got hacked but that's surely not the only way to hack a website.

Oh wait. You're referring to "Sign in with Twitter" and co?

Nah, that's not a route to being hacked. They don't get your details. It's like using an authenticator app. They just ask your device to check if you're already logged into that account you picked, then create a new account for you on the site using it

It's one of the safest ways to log in. I use GitHub often as my authenticator when creating accounts on programming sites, while I use Google for most other sites. The only account I'd suggest avoiding for this purpose is Facebook

If you are securely logged into Twitter, Google or Apple, a hacker will have to log into your Twitter, Google or Apple account to be able to get into Planner. And since these three usually ask you to activate 2FA, it's as safe as the free internet gets right now

As Art Vandelay said above, the login page really explains how safe it is: https://fpl.team/login

They have no access to your details. This is as safe as it gets when creating an account for a hobby

                        Appreciate the long explanations.

There's no guarantees that an amateur website will stay up to date with Internet security protocols. Things become outdated and vulnerable to attack.

I'd personally only use the social login details of the account that has least significance to your online security.

That's the thing: none of your login details will be saved on the amateur site. It's the safest way to do this

The only risk you'll face is if you type out your login details for Twitter, Google or Apple somewhere else

On this site, they've completely eliminated that risk because there's nothing to type or submit

      But weghorst won’t be a legend 🙁

Sad that when he hangs up his boots no silverware, he should’ve moved away years ago.

Weghorst is already a legend, Kane will be remembered as a man who never won anything and be forgotten afterwards.

LOL excellent. Kane obviously way more class and will get records of his own but still gave me a chuckle, never thought about that.

      Decent

Sanchez/Ward to Kepa/Raya for blanks and doubles (CS plus saves/bonus and they rotate well)

Mee to Schar/Gabriel or 3rd regular starter of your choice post 29

Salah to Bruno since you’re FH in 28 and ManU blank not a problem and Ode to Saka

Really wishing I didn't bring in Tarkowski for a hit this GW when I had Lewis on my bench who could've done the job, my gut told me that he could start but FOMO took over. Should've resisted then moved for a Brighton or Brentford defender this GW (Estupinan or Mee).

Lewis was a tough one. Walker had played a lot of consecutive games and was due a rest withe in the Bournemouth or Bristol City game. I thought Pep may stretched it to the cup game. Also Bernardo playing well in the hybrid CM/LB role.

Nailed doubler in Tark for Lewis seems the right decision imo.

I sold Lewis too having waited through this benchings and despite being quite confident that he would start, however it's how city is looking at the back and Lewis possible one pointers when he isn't starting are the reasons why I sold him, also it allowed ne to held on to both shaw and Trippier.

I actually sold Thomas and benched Lewis, still seemed logical after weighing up the options but the risk was always there that Lewis would play and Tarkowski wouldn't get returns. It could've been worse if Lewis got a clean sheet, but for me it was probably a bit of a kneejerk for a doubler who I'm not sure if I want to keep especially if I end up free-hitting in GW28.

Especially as the Brighton doubles look more appealing than the Everton one, but I guess it's all hindsight.

So easy with hindsight. Like always. I knew the risk, but FOMO was high. And Lewis just had to go, he can't be trusted to get minutes or points when he is needed.

True, Tarkowski is at least guaranteed minutes and will play in the blank. Means that I will be unlikely to FH in GW28 and won't go big on Brighton and Brentford for their DGW27, maybe Toney plus one or two others.
