Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will get a short break from the helter-skelter schedule of doubles but, ahead of Gameweek 30, the armband decision is far from a formality.

Following his return to Manchester City training on Wednesday, the expected minutes of a certain Erling Haaland (£12.0m) has been a robust hot topic.

Furthermore, the Norwegian faces stiff competition for the armband from Manchester United assets, with options from Aston Villa, Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur representing a spread selection.

As usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to highlight which assets have the best chance of hauling.

First, we will assess the fallout of the captain poll, before then analysing the best options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Saturday’s 11:00 BST deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

After failing to recover sufficiently from injury to face Liverpool last week, Haaland tops a highly competitive captain poll, backed by a mite over three-tenths of the total votes cast by users at the time of writing.

Man United’s Marcus Rashford (£7.3m) provides the main competition, backed by just over a quarter of users in second place.

Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) occupies third place with a not insignificant 18% of the vote, followed a long way further back by Harry Kane (£11.7m) and Bruno Fernandes (£9.6m).

THE CANDIDATES

ERLING HAALAND/KEVIN DE BRUYNE

The striking prowess of Haaland needs little introduction, with Man City’s marksman a revelation in his debut Premier League season.

His 34 attacking returns, 28 goals, six assists and 203 Fantasy points are simply phenomenal numbers for a young player in his first-ever English top-flight campaign.

The issue with Haaland is not a matter of quality, it’s about fitness, scheduling and trying to logically build a picture of his game-time prospects. His last outing was Gameweek 27’s trip to Crystal Palace, as Pep Guardiola’s side then blanked in Gameweek 28.

Haaland was called up by Norway for Euro 2024 qualifiers but had to be released due to a groin injury, subsequently missing the 4-1 hammering of Liverpool.

However, video footage released by the club showed him participating in full training sessions on both Wednesday and Thursday.

Legomane’s graphic below highlights City’s extremely congested schedule, with a Champions League quarter-final first-leg against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

Above: Man City’s immediate schedule, with no more than a three-day recovery period

My opinion is that the Norwegian will start at Southampton, playing roughly 60 to 70 minutes to gain the all-important match rhythm before facing Bayern. However, a substitute cameo is also possible, given the array of talent available to Guardiola. That risk and possibility must be calculated for captaincy.

Alternatively, Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) provides a differential route into their attack, having recorded a 13-point haul against Liverpool. The playmaker turned centre-forward to prod home their third goal, before turning provider for Jack Grealish‘s (£6.9m) icing of the cake.

De Bruyne is a predominantly creative force with his 17 key passes and five big chances supplied, ranking in the division’s top six over the last six matches.

He likes a shot – normally from outside the box – with his 11 sitting within Man City’s top five over this same period, scoring both the big chances he has received.

Although opponents Southampton have improved since the appointment of Ruben Selles, with initial wins against Leicester City and Chelsea, the new manager bounce has been short-lived as they’re now winless in their last four league matches.

The Saints have decent underlying defensive numbers during their last six outings, ranking joint-second best for shots on target conceded (17). Yet a seventh-worst non-penalty expected goals conceded (NPxGC) tally of 9.24 could be brutally exposed by Guardiola’s charges, as could their zonal weaknesses.

The Saints place in the bottom five for conceding crosses (66) and chances (24) from their right flank over the last six, also being the joint-second worst for allowing headed goal attempts (19).

I'm on Saka too. Perhaps risky given Liverpool's performances in the big games at Anfield, but if Arsenal can cope with that atmosphere then they're there for the taking. I think Haaland starts but I'm happy to just get him rather than captain this week

I think Liverpool have one style of play, or speed of play, more accurately. I just don’t see how they suddenly stop giving up big chances to Arsenal.

The fact that such a narrow template of players exists is a failure of official fpl.

If they awarded more points to different positions that recognised their skill then we could choose from a wider range of players.

The template would become more diverse with a lower EO, offer more routes to success and increase the skill level.

Instead official fpl fail to utilise dozens of players every season and this lazy approach is just accepted by a community of around 10m people.

100% same thoughts but I feel it's the content creators who spoon feeding everyone and that to me is the biggest reason of narrow template. But yes FPL should modify scoring system now. Plus should introduce vice captain as well

The failure is in thethseason's pricing IMO. Too many players like Rashford or Martinelli were priced far, far too cheaply, defenders prices were overall brought too low to the point where you could get a starring Arsenal or ManUtd defender for the same price as a Bournemouth or Forest defender, even Kane (who ended last season in superb form) dropped in price. There have been very few big decisions to make this season regarding premiums, and nobody has been pushed to the point where you have to really scour for a budget differential from a team in the lower reaches of the table because of affordability. Unfortunately I think this will continue to be the case going forward as the playerbase continues to increase, it makes it easier to engage more casual players if they can nearly always fit in who they want.

      2. Twisted Saltergater
        • 16 Years
        2 years, 8 months ago

We get this nearly every season though. It’s almost impossible to predict who will be the Brighton of the season and price their players appropriately. Look at the price of Leicester players the season they won the league.

Conversely, it can be just as difficult to predict the teams that did well the season before then struggle. The result is an overpriced Son and Bowen and an underpriced Rashford, Martinelli, Mitoma, March and co.

        1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 5 Years
          2 years, 8 months ago

The Brightons or Leicesters aren't an issue, as you say that can happen every season. But there's no excuse for pricing multiple starting defenders from teams targeting UCL places at the same price points as defenders from promoted teams or teams that we would have all been confident were going to be fighting relegation. Having the likes of Kane, Son or Ronaldo drop by a significant amount as well as introducing Haaland at 11.5m eases everything for everyone. I began this season with a team that included Haaland, Kane, Salah, Cancelo, TAA, Jesus, Trippier and Saliba. It was madness

They need to give points for tackles, won headers etc. and definitely decrease points for missed chances. One midfielder or forward can miss tons of chances and then score one easy goal, get 10 points.

How will you rate the other skills in points in an objective way?

Goals, assists, clean sheets are easy to calculate and there will be no debate.
Bonus points also exist for a reason, though it's a bit harder/more debatable to calculate.
      >> But for a DMF position for example, it will be harder to calculate, and frankly way less fun to watch the game and focus on how many tackles Nottingham's DMF have done (I don't even know his name).

This point has been raised quite a few times over the seasons, and I do agree with it to an extent, but probably it's better to keep it the way it is.

They want to make the game simple for casual players, and adding a layer of additional points that are only visible by drilling down into stats (e.g. defensive midfielder contributions) will likely put them off.

      - Both in good form
      - Both have matches that are tough to predict (though I see Arsenal winning 2 or 3 over liverpool)
      - On the other hand, Saka provides a kind of coverage for Arsenal (though martinelli can be the one to score at the end)

Not a gambling man, but Liverpool will need to dig deep to get anything out of this game.

Play shaw or Zouma this week?! The malacia midweek performance worries me about a shaw rest/cameo if his injury is not serious

Gtg? Not sure about who to play between Estup, Felix, March, Gabriel. Could also do Gabriel/Henry to Stones.

    Ddg
    Chilwell, Trippier, Estup
    Saka, Rashford, Mitoma, Maddison
    Kane, Toney, Felix

    Iverson, March, Gabriel, Henry

1FT What to do. 5.5 mil want to bring in Haaland
    Steele
    Trippier Shaw Chilwell
    Salah Martinelli Saka Rashford
    Watkins Toney Havertz
    (Raya-Mitoma-MIngs-Henry)

    A. Haaland for Havertz or Toney?
    B. Do I do anything else for a hit?

Are you worried about the short turn around and early kick off?

Currently on Watkins for this (amongst other) reasons. Watkins bang in form and Everton aren’t conceding loads under Dyche. I can see this being a fairly tight affair. Also hate going balls in on the early kick-off but that’s just me. United have hardly been on it. I expect Rash to return but I’d back Watkins to outscore him v Forest

It's a fair shout but Watkins has a one goal ceiling, I do think Rashford also does at the moment but Haaland v Southampton certainly doesn't!

Not necessarily. I quite fancy him for a brace this week. He’s scoring against teams of all levels and confidence is clearly sky high. Agree re Haaland but we’re not sure he’ll play and, if he does, for how long. I suspect 60 mins from the start or the last 30 mins. Enough time to damage Southampton I know but I’m pretty vanilla / safe in my Captain choices

To be fair, I consider Haaland's 30/60 minutes to be "safe" choice this week given that City will probably live in Southamptons box the whole game

Funny season. You just never know. Should play out like that but City have had a couple of stutters against poor sides (Everton for example). Go with your gut

    Afternoon everyone,

Unfortunately I have no easy route directly to Haaland with only 0.1m ITB and 1FT.

Which do you think would be the best move to facilitate him? I am FH32.

    a. Salah, Isak > Grealish, Haaland -4
    b. Salah, Toney > Grealish, Haaland -4
    c. Maddison, Kane > Grealish, Haaland -4
    d. Something else involving hiding behind the sofa

Don’t really want shut of Kane or Salah so in a bit of a pickle. Am annoyingly 0.1 off Watkins and Haaland for Toney and Kane too. Any advice appreciated!
