634x258 Suspensions

A busy weekend on the suspension tightrope has seen the eight residents of the previous Gameweek joined by seven new additions. With the loss of two unfortunate souls to suspension, we’re left with a Hallowe’en worthy band of 13 trick or treaters to tread carefully through Gameweek 10.

If you’ve been following the various Scout outlets, such as the handy sidebar widget, the detailed data of the members area or even stumbled across my twitter feed (hashtag: #suspensiontightrope), then you’ll know much of this already, but read on for the disciplinary highlights that the weekend had to offer…

Despite the upturn in goalscoring accuracy for Luis Suárez this season and his steady stream of Fantasy points, the disciplinary cloud is never far from the Uruguayan. A fourth yellow card of the campaign, picked up in the Merseyside derby (for the controversial foul on Sylvain Distin) adds him to our rogues gallery this week, just one more booking from a single match ban. Theoretically, a card received in the midweek cup tie against Swansea would therefore see Suárez suspended for the next league game (home to Newcastle).

Highlighted in the article last week, with his fourth caution collected in Gameweek 8, many thought a tactical booking for Michu was a likely occurrence last weekend but, perhaps with a higher moral regard for these things, the Spaniard completed the game untarnished and, as with Suárez, will still be available for the cup game at Anfield.

Fellow tightrope mainstay Marouane Fellaini is also present and correct on the graphic this week as he negotiated that fiery derby date unscathed and continues his Damoclean adventure into Gameweek 10. No cup game to complicate matters for the flocculent Belgian means he’ll definitely be playing ‘under the sword’ as Everton visit Craven Cottage next weekend.

Finally, West Ham defender and Fantasy favourite Winston Reid is the last name picked out from the tainted hordes. His quarter of a million ownership now also face an anxious wait to see when his fifth booking will arrive, bringing with it the customary ban – again no cup exploits for The Hammers to interfere.

On to the suspensions and we’ve seen a flurry of those this week, too. Angel Rangel and James McArthur (originally missed by Opta, but since corrected) have both falled from the high wire this week with their fifth yellow cards, jointly winning the tightrope race conveniently in time to serve out their single match suspension in the midweek Capital One Cup ties.

Also sitting out the handy cup fixtures are Branislav Ivanovic (one match ban for his dismissal in denying a goalscoring opportunity), Fernando Torres and Aston Villa’s Joe Bennett (both dismissed for two cautions resulting in a one match ban),

The longer term absentees, Stéphane M’Bia (first match of three), Cheick Tioté (second match of three) and John Terry (last of a four match ban) will all remain suspended for the upcoming return to league action.

As always, these bans can be found in our Injuries and Bans table. We’ll be updating the tightrope widget every week from this point on, and bringing you our regular article summing up the new arrivals and the suspensions being served.

So what's the thinking with RVP leading the (C) votes?

Arsenal isn't exactly an easy fixture and it's against his former club so could even mean a start on the bench (maybe an agreement with Wenger?)

Bale at home to Wigan looks more appealing.

Form. 4 assists and 2 goals in last 4 and more around him. Bale has to do something himself. Oh and i don't have him!

RvPs delivered in every start so far. Bale hasnt scored points at home but for an assist this season. That being said, theyre both in decent form and great (C) options.

I think I'll feel a little safer captaining a striker in a team full of goals right now.

If I'd be a little tempted. But to be honest I'd still captain RVP. He's so involved this year, and I can't see him not playing. I doubt Fergie would agree to that kind of agreement with Wenger 😛

United are the best attacking team in the league, RVP is their main man and they're playing at home. Also: I think the 8-2 last year lingers a little bit in the mind, even though they're obviously not the same teams now.

Bale is very in form so hardly a bad choice. All his goals so far have been away from home but I doubt that's anything more than an anomaly.

On the other hand, players do seem to have a tendency to score against former clubs. Maybe it's because they know the defenders so well they know how to deal with them. I don't have any data to back this up though - is it a real phenomenon or one of those illusions?

i can imagine it's quite true.

RvP will know the ARS defence from training including their strengths and weaknesses. he'll have beaten them all ends up on a daily basis.

Like Mark & Granville said on the Pod the other week, if you captain him and he lets you down at least you went with a decent pick. Bale sometimes lets you down. (although not last week, thanks for the 20 points)

Wigan are horribly unpredictable, they can beat anyone.

I went for Bale last week for the simple reason that players like to score against their former clubs. I can see RVP wanting to prove a point to Arsenal, which after all he left because of the team's lack of ambition. And as has been sent he knows the likes of Mertesacker and Verm inside out. They will know him too, but I'll wager RVP got the better of them in training far more than they did of him.

I'm holding off getting Bale in place of Torres in my starting XI for exactly that reason. Wigan could be up for it, then Spurs travel to City. Think I'm doubling on blues with Haz, can always downgrade to bale or switch Santi.

Personally I might hang onto Gervinho if he's only gonna miss the United game. If United stuff Arsenal I think Wenger will use Gerv back up front where he was scoring. Although it's too early to decide for me. I might just end up doing Gervinho --> Adam or Lallana next week.

There is no way Bale will be at left back in the near future. He is by far their most explosive attacking player. WIth the versatile Vertonghen also now in their squad i reckon it's close to 0% chance of that happening

Feel like I should justify myself here. Stoke don't score many goals, Southampton do, Norwich have capitulated a couple of times but have also managed to look actually solid in some games. WBA have kept more CS than their stats suggest they should of done.

Maybe not Ruddy by a distance though.

Pog is my 3rd striker, so 4-5-1 is possible if Clark is fit, otherwise I am hoping that either of two hit or miss strikers can give me at least 60 good minutes in the road.

Not a fans but I have had a small look into this to see if Williamson might be an option. It looks that there is no clear second or third choice, so both could be prone to rotation based on form.

I am a fan. Coloccini and Taylor are Pardews best/preferred centre back pairing. Williamson only gets in when Taylor or Coloccini is injured.

Pardew policy however, is to keep Williamson in when he's played well, so when Taylor gets back in is open to question. Once Taylor is back in and fit, he and Coloccini will play every week.

He isn't 2nd choice by any means. Pardew definitely prefers Coloccini and Taylor as his best defensive pairing... but because of the way Williamson and Coloccini played against Sunderland he kept them together.

Long term Taylor will undoubtedly play more but it may be a case of waiting for either Williamson to have a bad game or pick up an injury.

Personally I would make the change and then revert back if you wish, once Taylor is confirmed as playing week in week out again.

        I'd ditch Rangel first.

I thought he'd come straight back in and was surprised he didn't start vs West Brom. Williamson was steady if not spectacular. I'd just be guessing one way or another but I'd say I'd be ditching Rangel anyway so S Taylor can wait another week or 2.

Has there been any word on BAE? The injuries page has an article from October 15th. Mulling Caulker for Wilson, can't afford Gallas. The obvious move is Cameron/Wilkinson, but I'm considering getting Huth next week after I throw some money around and I don't want to triple up on Stoke...
