The majority of players base their transfers on:

1. FPL flags
2. Total points scored to date (the right hand section on the transfer screen)
3. Goals scored in the last gameweek

As late as possible, but circumstances could force my hand. Like this week.

I take the early approach - as late as possible without losing out to a single a price rise or fall. I followed that last year and saved around £1.0m - £1.5m. I got bitten twice by subsequent injuries that forced point hits.

But perhaps I got very lucky with the injuries.

The later the better... exception to the rule last week when I took Fellaini and Ba on the Tuesday as I wouldn't have been able to later in the week.

I know some people will have insane value on here but I'm happy with making late transfers and a team value of £105m (Selling £102.6m)

My approach changes through the season:

Early on I will do early transfers as the price changes are crazy with casuals still in the market, in order to build team value - taking a risk on injuries

After the first few weeks (i.e. around now) use a balanced approach, depending what games there are midweek, etc - some early some late

In the New Year, just do them on Friday nights and forget about value

I tend to wait until Friday. Unless I'm priced out of what looks like a prime transfer to make. Not worked well this season though.

Silva isn't an explosive player like Mata. He's a clockwork assister and very unlikely to repay the hit this week. Wait and get him free. It's not like his price is rising.
